WTF Friday: Icarus

5

When I was in high school an older student drove a yellow Pontiac Sunbird with Ractive underglow, white letter Tiger Paw tires, a cherry bomb muffler, cut springs, and a Pyramid nothing but bass audio system. He thought it was pretty slick, but ever since I laid eyes on that car the Sunbird has been one of those vehicles that I would do anything to avoid owning.

Evidently that only applies to 99.9% of Sunbirds because I actually wouldn’t mind going for a rip in this heavily modified one.

sunbird_2

From the firewall forward this Sunbird is equipped with a S10 clip, and from about mid rocker back 2×3 steel tubing has been grafted in so that a competition engineering adjustable ladder bar coil over suspension could be mounted out back.

Why you ask?

Well because the stock motor has been binned in favour of a built (50 .030 over Hypereutectic pistons 9.5:1, Speed demon 750 cfm carb) Chevrolet 350 that is further fortified by a 100 shot of naaaws nitrous.

That’s right ‘over 25000 dollars’ has transformed this previously front wheel drive Sunbird from disposable GM economy car to unexpected 1/4 mile demon.

Should you be interested in this oddball project the car is for sale on Kijiji for $6000 which actually seems like a half way reasonable price for something this unique.

Wonder if there’s a build thread?

Theme Tuesdays: Daily Moleskines With Chris Piscitelli

2

I feel fairly confident that everyone reading this has, at some point, penned the odd doodle or sketch of a something automotive related.

My first illustrations are a vivid memory, and though I can’t/don’t draw today, illustrating at a young age gave me both an appreciation for the finer details of vehicles, as well as an appreciation for art in general. Recently I’ve found a renewed interest in automotive art and as such I’ve been perusing the work of others.

One artist –who I’ve been following via his blog Design 165— is Chris Piscitelli who’s incredibly cool 2014 ‘Daily Moleskine’ project leapt out as something I simply had to share here.

Before launching into the collection thus far I am going to share an excerpt of the inspiration behind this series because I feel it too is something all of us can relate to. I myself have a BMX magazine collection that’s a little out of control.

At some point in the 70’s my mother made my old man toss a bunch of his old car mags. I’m not sure where he managed to hide the hundreds that I still ended up with, but regardless, when he “purged” the first time, he ripped pages out with things that were important to him at the time. So I have an overflowing folder with piles of disintegrating magazine pages from the early 60’s. I’ve decided to use them as the subject of my daily Moleskine pocket sketch book til I fill it, or run out of old pages to reference…(I’m sure the former will happen first). – Chris Piscitelli

Huge thanks to Chris for giving me permission to repost his work here, and be sure to check out both his blog Design 165 and follow him on instagram @design165.

While you’re there be sure to convince him to let me feature his Omni GLH project one day too.

I’ve been subscribed to Brett Sloan’s Tumblr via rss (I don’t have a tumblr account) for quite sometime now but I think this cab over is the first of his photos I have posted here and not on the fanpage.

Being such a cool truck I figured a single photo Facebook drop wouldn’t really do it justice.

WTF Friday: A Mechanic’s Dream

1

Spotted this ‘awesome’ project for sale in one of my favourite threads ever to exist on the internet.

Though the buyer calls it a mechanic’s dream I think most of you will agree that it’s more akin to a nightmare.

The air ride system (particularly in the front) leaks to the point where the vehicle is rendered helpless and the ‘management’ is made up of re-purposed shop equipment powered by extra batteries and an inverter.

nightmare_4

Who knows what kind of horrors lay beneath that paint and since there’s no mention of poppers I am going to assume getting in and out might be a little challenging.

On the bright side the car is priced fairly cheap at $1500 and if you happen to have a set of 28s or 30s keeping the corner of your house up he’d trade for those.

…the craigslist app should come with photography instructions….

Nukung Real Low

6

Yesterday morning, awake with my son sometime between the hours of five and six, I saw a photo of a really unique Corolla on instagram and attempted to make a mental note to post it a few hours later.

About twelve hours later I realized that 5 am mental notes should really be physical notes because I had a heck of a time trying to remember what vehicle it was I wanted to post and where the heck I saw it.

Eventually my brain connected the dots and I remembered it was a Corolla that is a huge (and welcome) departure from the beige banged up image that normally comes to mind when this chassis is mentioned.

This Corolla, which belongs to Nukang, has undergone quite a few revisions with the green on green being the most recent.

I’ve included most of the versions below, and personally the green on charcoal with copious dish is my favourite. But they are all good.

Stance: The Six Letter Dirty Word?

3

Defined, stance is “the manner and position in which a person or animal stands”, loosely translated to automobiles stance used to be explicitly refer to how a vehicles body was positioned relative to it’s wheels and the ground.

It was a word used, without much thought, across the entire automotive landscape; be it classic carhot rod, muscle car, 4×4 or what have you.

That all encompassing use –of the previously harmless word– is the mainstay of this website, and contributes to the content depth beyond the definition touted by most of the here today, buy my stuff so I can cash out tomorrow, ‘stance’ Instagram accounts, blogs and fanpages.

That definition is of course that aggressive fitment (aka the ‘perfect’ combination of camber, tire stretch and low offset wheels) IS stance. Point blank, period.

While I’m not going to argue that the word “stance” doesn’t aptly describe the aggressive fitment sub set of automotive tuning, I will say that as aggressive fitment grew in popularity things began to take a turn for the worst when it came to the reputation of the monosyllabliac six letter word in question.

The word stance  is now so disliked in some circles that the mere mention of it, in any context, sends people into an incredible frenzy of hatred.

In fact I can guarantee you that as you read this there is, at the very least, one individual currently berating someone they don’t know, about their choice of wheels, tire size, and suspension configuration. They are probably doing so with such hatred laden words that one might think their own car got modified over night by some sort of fitment ninja from the dojo of ‘stance’.

Having run a site with stance in the name for some time now I’ve noted the evolution (or perhaps devolution) of the word, and met the hatred and assumptions now tied to it first hand. Many have seemingly forgotten what the word meant prior to 2009, and mentally write me off as a foolish hipster only obsessed with corded tires, mangled fenders, and road gratered-undercarraiges, before the word ‘everything’ has left my lips.

But even if the be all, end all, characterization of ‘stance’ was aggressive fitment, the thing I struggle with most is the root cause of all the hatred.

Sure in most cases function often takes a back seat to form in the aggressive fitment community, but it is far from the only form first style of auto mobile modification to ever exist. Kustoms and Lowriders are two very significant segments of the enthusiast world that don’t seem to get nearly the same amount of disrespect. In fact among nearly all circles they are respected to some degree.

Is ‘stance’ hated because it’s popular? If so that is a bit of a silly reason, and the unfounded hatred will no doubt draw more people toward it creating a bit of a vicious cycle.

Perhaps it is because people have begun to push the boundaries in directions that are arguably visually unappealing? No that can’t be it either because people have been doing things like that for centuries, and no matter the scenario what looks good to one person simply won’t look good to everyone else.

Perhaps it’s the community? Sure some members may come off as abrasive, egotistical, and a bit know- it-all but historically when has a community comprised predominately of males aged 18-24 not been portrayed as such?

I’m sure hot rodders of the day were classified as ‘misguided youth’ who fancied destroying perfectly good automotibles, and there’s no doubt in my mind that people who took part in the street machine look of the 70’s were told that they were tossing away their cars handling characteristics in order to achieve a desired aesthetic goal.

So then what exactly is the problem contributing to the ever growing passionate hatred?

I’ve tried to approach this issue from every angle and no matter what I can’t seem to find a rational, valid, reason for the growing contempt.

Perhaps I simply think too much, or perhaps I just need to grow comfortable with the fact that ‘stance’ has now become the six letter dirty word of the automotive world.

What do you think?

WTF Friday: Rollin’ Coal With Class

2

While doing a quick skim of my RSS reader the snail poking out from under the hood of this Bentley snagged my attention and quickly sent me down the Google rabbit hole looking for more information.

After coming up with the same photo several times over I was eventually able to find a thread on retrorides that discussed the car in slightly more detail.

The fair sized turbo actually hangs off the side of a Cummins motor which has been wedged under the hood by the owner.

roll_coal_1
Upon realization that it’s a Cummins motor under the hood the chrome stack makes a whole lot more sense!

There’s essentially nothing online that documents it’s creation, but one user states that the owner (rumoured to be a Mr. Hoyes) built it because he had the Bentley in one corner of his shed, and the Cummins in another. Sound enough reasoning for me.

I’d love to see it with a different set of wheels and without the spoiler out back but that is just me being picky.

Turbo Ghia

0

While pulling together this week’s Theme Tuesday I found myself browsing Kris B’s facebook page and as I was clicking through I noticed a certain wild looking Ghia kept appearing.

Known as the Green Thunderbolt, this particular Ghia is easily identifiable by it’s green paint, low stance, and absolutely wild protruding turbo set up.

I have, thus far, been unable to locate a build thread or feature on this particular ‘dub but should I find one I will update this entry post haste.
