Stance: The Six Letter Dirty Word?

3

Defined, stance is “the manner and position in which a person or animal stands”, loosely translated to automobiles stance used to be explicitly refer to how a vehicles body was positioned relative to it’s wheels and the ground.

It was a word used, without much thought, across the entire automotive landscape; be it classic carhot rod, muscle car, 4×4 or what have you.

That all encompassing use –of the previously harmless word– is the mainstay of this website, and contributes to the content depth beyond the definition touted by most of the here today, buy my stuff so I can cash out tomorrow, ‘stance’ Instagram accounts, blogs and fanpages.

That definition is of course that aggressive fitment (aka the ‘perfect’ combination of camber, tire stretch and low offset wheels) IS stance. Point blank, period.

While I’m not going to argue that the word “stance” doesn’t aptly describe the aggressive fitment sub set of automotive tuning, I will say that as aggressive fitment grew in popularity things began to take a turn for the worst when it came to the reputation of the monosyllabliac six letter word in question.

The word stance  is now so disliked in some circles that the mere mention of it, in any context, sends people into an incredible frenzy of hatred.

In fact I can guarantee you that as you read this there is, at the very least, one individual currently berating someone they don’t know, about their choice of wheels, tire size, and suspension configuration. They are probably doing so with such hatred laden words that one might think their own car got modified over night by some sort of fitment ninja from the dojo of ‘stance’.

Having run a site with stance in the name for some time now I’ve noted the evolution (or perhaps devolution) of the word, and met the hatred and assumptions now tied to it first hand. Many have seemingly forgotten what the word meant prior to 2009, and mentally write me off as a foolish hipster only obsessed with corded tires, mangled fenders, and road gratered-undercarraiges, before the word ‘everything’ has left my lips.

But even if the be all, end all, characterization of ‘stance’ was aggressive fitment, the thing I struggle with most is the root cause of all the hatred.

Sure in most cases function often takes a back seat to form in the aggressive fitment community, but it is far from the only form first style of auto mobile modification to ever exist. Kustoms and Lowriders are two very significant segments of the enthusiast world that don’t seem to get nearly the same amount of disrespect. In fact among nearly all circles they are respected to some degree.

Is ‘stance’ hated because it’s popular? If so that is a bit of a silly reason, and the unfounded hatred will no doubt draw more people toward it creating a bit of a vicious cycle.

Perhaps it is because people have begun to push the boundaries in directions that are arguably visually unappealing? No that can’t be it either because people have been doing things like that for centuries, and no matter the scenario what looks good to one person simply won’t look good to everyone else.

Perhaps it’s the community? Sure some members may come off as abrasive, egotistical, and a bit know- it-all but historically when has a community comprised predominately of males aged 18-24 not been portrayed as such?

I’m sure hot rodders of the day were classified as ‘misguided youth’ who fancied destroying perfectly good automotibles, and there’s no doubt in my mind that people who took part in the street machine look of the 70’s were told that they were tossing away their cars handling characteristics in order to achieve a desired aesthetic goal.

So then what exactly is the problem contributing to the ever growing passionate hatred?

I’ve tried to approach this issue from every angle and no matter what I can’t seem to find a rational, valid, reason for the growing contempt.

Perhaps I simply think too much, or perhaps I just need to grow comfortable with the fact that ‘stance’ has now become the six letter dirty word of the automotive world.

What do you think?

WTF Friday: Rollin’ Coal With Class

2

While doing a quick skim of my RSS reader the snail poking out from under the hood of this Bentley snagged my attention and quickly sent me down the Google rabbit hole looking for more information.

After coming up with the same photo several times over I was eventually able to find a thread on retrorides that discussed the car in slightly more detail.

The fair sized turbo actually hangs off the side of a Cummins motor which has been wedged under the hood by the owner.

roll_coal_1
Upon realization that it’s a Cummins motor under the hood the chrome stack makes a whole lot more sense!

There’s essentially nothing online that documents it’s creation, but one user states that the owner (rumoured to be a Mr. Hoyes) built it because he had the Bentley in one corner of his shed, and the Cummins in another. Sound enough reasoning for me.

I’d love to see it with a different set of wheels and without the spoiler out back but that is just me being picky.

Any readers out in England (Harrogate area) game for a little scavenger hunt? It’s rumoured to sound pretty mental cruising about.

Turbo Ghia

0

While pulling together this week’s Theme Tuesday I found myself browsing Kris B’s facebook page and as I was clicking through I noticed a certain wild looking Ghia kept appearing.

Known as the Green Thunderbolt, this particular Ghia is easily identifiable by it’s green paint, low stance, and absolutely wild protruding turbo set up.

I have, thus far, been unable to locate a build thread or feature on this particular ‘dub but should I find one I will update this entry post haste.

Sil-Truck

After seeing a few photos of this pick up truck converted 240 pop up on instagram I immediately took to hunting down more photos. A lot of 240s look pretty similar these days but this one is quite a departure from the ‘norm’.

I don’t think this is the first 240 truck I have ever seen but I am pretty sure that it is the best executed and personally I really love the paint colour, and wheel choice.

It also looks like Eleven’s Paint and Fiber had a hand in it’s creation which explains why I like it so much. I don’t think they have ever been behind a wack looking car.

WTF Friday: The LSX Prius is An Actual Thing

2

I’m sure some of you remember a craigslist ad that appeared on Jalopnik advertising the sale of an LS powered Toyota Prius.

While that turned out to be nothing more than a creatively worded pile of cow manure the project itself is actually real and steadily progressing.

lsx_prius_motor_in
Surprisingly the motor fits in the engine bay pretty well… all things considered

The builder, Rick White (who appears to be an ls1tech regular), plans to have the car sorted this summer with a stock ’02 LS1, and then tear it apart the following winter to slap a turbo on it.

lsx_prius_tranny_tunnel
The necessary drive shaft and transmission tunnel has been fabricated…
lsx_prius_tub
…along with the necessary wheel tubs

lsx_prius_rear_end

The goal is to keep the car fairly stock looking and keep the motor as quiet as possible so that it’s a proper deadly sleeper.

In an effort to not give anything away, he also got the stock wheels widened so that he can make somewhat decent traction.

The projected 1/4 mile time is 9 seconds all said and done.

lsx_prius_wheels

lsx_prius_wheels_2
Judging by the photos and progress on the LSXPrius Facebook fan page things are moving along swimmingly and this once econobox should be a tire shredder in no time.

Any votes for what the almighty LS should make it’s way into next?

Randy Traps

If I were to guess –which I am going to– I would say the number of Neons posted on the site over the years ranges somewhere from 3 – 5.

From what I’ve observed Neon owners (SRT4s included) either don’t do much to them visually, or do absolutely terrible things to them visually. This means clean ones are extremely few and far between but, they do exist as proven by this bagged 05 I found on the Wrong Fitment Crew Forums.

The bagged on CCWs recipe is tried and true but works really well here.

Theme Tuesdays: Burnouts – Part 2.

0

The weather here in Toronto seems to be taking a turn for the better and as the temperature crawls up from 0 the sounds of summer grow in volume. Those sounds are of course the tire squeals, and matching revs, that accompany people spiritedly taking off from the stop light visible from my balcony.

While watching people rush fool hardy into the speed trap down the road I thought that I should do a second Theme Tuesday on Burnouts so, here we are.

Enjoy.

Beast Mode: Trevor’s 2007 Mazdaspeed 3

10

Recently a number of builds have emerged from the rapidly growing Mazda 3 aggressive fitment community that are pushing the chassis ride height and wheel fitment boundaries to new levels.

As these cars get lower, and lower, and wheels wider, and wider, several individuals have begun to explore the possibilities that exist beyond the limitations of the stock 3 body.

Already running a fairly aggressive set up the , Trevor used an ailing motor as an excuse to give his Mazdaspeed 3 a top to bottom rebuild for the 2014 season.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_3_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_2_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_1_dt

After some careful planning Kieron ‘KJohn’ Ramjohn of KJohn Car Innovations got to work removing any factory metal that would prevent the 18×10 Koning SSM wheels from properly fitting underneath Trevor’s Mazda.

While bolt on flares are the current ‘go to’ option for going wide, Trevor and KJohn bucked the trend and went the more challenging route of molding the new flares to the body.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_4_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_5_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_6_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_7_dt

Though historically this option runs the risk of cracking filler and paint at the slightest breeze, these flares have been properly, and permanently, affixed to the car. Even when yanked on forcefully to prove a point these flares don’t so much as budge.

The end result of the extensive body work –combined with a healthy drop provided by Standard Suspension coilovers– is a rear end silhouette that would make the likes of Coco jealous.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_8_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_9_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_10_dn

With the rear of the car set significantly wider than stock something had to be done up front, so prior to spraying that unique custom grey paint on the exterior KJohn widened the front fenders in a subtle blister style.

This detail, that many may overlook while studying the rear quarters, gives the car a nasty snarl when combined with the Garage Vary front lip and matching eyelids.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_11_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_12_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_14_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_13_dt

While the car was under going it’s exterior transformation at the hands of KJohn, Trevor was busy rebuilding the bum motor that kick started this entire rebuild.

The turbo 2.3 DISI MZR I4 mill now boasts a lengthy list of modifications including; a ported and polished intake manifold, SURE Motorsports TIG™ thermal intake and throttle body spacers, SURE Injector seals, SURE balance shaft delete, SURE 3″ Inlet and Intake, ARP studs, and a CXRacing front mount inter cooler.

Suited, booted, and tuned by Advance Power House, Trevor’s car is now running better than it ever has before.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_14_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_15_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_16_dn

On the inside Trevor continued the red/black/grey color scheme blueprinted by both the new exterior color and stock Mazdaspeed 3 seats, by having his center console sprayed the same candy apple found on his wheels.

Further tying the seats, console, and wheels together are custom wrapped factory door cards.

widebody_mazda_speed_3_28_dt

widebody_mazdaspeed3_19_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_20_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_21_dt

Should Trevor not want to listen to his Turbosmart blow off valve, or Victory Build custom Exhaust, a quick turn of the volume knob on his Sony deck sends sounds pumping through the complete Skar Audio in car entertainment system consisting of Skar Audio 6.5″ components, VVXV2 Subwoofers, and duo of SK800.1 and 80.4 amplifiers.

widebody_mazdaspeed3_17_dn

widebody_mazdaspeed3_18_dn

There’s a saying that goes “when life gives you lemons paint that shit gold” and while Trevor didn’t paint his car gold after his motor gave up the ghost he certainly did make the best of a bad situation by turning his car into an absolutely unique show stopper.

WTF Friday: Mayhem With A Seat

0

If you follow the site/myself on instagram (which you should) you will have noticed that on occasion I toss up a photo or two of the odd motorized kid sized trike.

I posted this one not too long ago, and recently I came across another picture of it, so I figured it would be the perfect thing to post on this Good Friday.

mayem_with_a_seat_1

mayem_with_a_seat_2

Information about the trike seems pretty well non existent but people with more motorcycle knowledge than myself ID the motor as a Honda CB750.

Whether it ran, and whether the owner wound up in the hospital shortly after the maiden voyage, is anyone’s best guess but damn if it doesn’t look like something that would make a lot of “hold my beer and watch this” memories.

Shout out to Curtis at Dead Machine for coining the term Mayhem with a seat.
