Super Sedan Honda Prelude

0

Saturday night, around eleven or so, my friend –and very occasional guest poster— Josh sent me a photo of a heavily modified Honda Prelude.

The car was clearly above and beyond what it was when it left the factory, but I had no idea how much so until I was linked to a few threads via some members of the Stance Is Everything Facebook Fan Page.

The car is part of Australia’s ‘Super Sedan’ racing series appears to have been in competition since at least 2002.

The version(s) below seem to be the most recent prior it its latest rebuild.

There isn’t a whole lot of Prelude left (the rear tail lights, roof skin, a, b pillars, and doors skins) but it’s still really cool to see someone run around in a vehicle that at least resembles the mostly neglected third generation Prelude.

Under the skin the car has a tube chassis, and at one point an F20 backed by a Nissan transmission made up the drive train.

notquiteaprelude_9

notquiteaprelude_8

notquiteaprelude_7

As of the pictures above it seems like a Chevy V8 has found it’s way into the mix, and the body panels have changed a bit.

Information about the car seems a bit scattered but there’s some here on the driver Brett Dickie’s Facebook page, Affordable Honda Transmissions (seriously), and on Prelude Power.

Note: If the internet has lead me astray and these are actually two different Aussie, Super Sedan, third generation Preludes please don’t hesitate to provide more info.

SEMA Showstopper: Quit Your Bitchin’, sincerely Welderup

0

What better way to end the SEMA 2014 coverage than with a closer look at the builds produced by Las Vegas based Welderup?

Welderup is a name I’m sure all of you are familiar with, even if you don’t know it.

welderup-burnout

Recognize this picture? I’m sure you do, because in addition to being an awesome photo, it’s gone around the web and back again multiple times, most notably in the ‘F-Your Prius’ meme.

Well that car, known as the ‘Diesel Rod’, is a Welderup project and one of several they brought to SEMA 2014.

sema-2014-welderup-legs-2

Most would call these builds rat rods, but I’ve shied away from using that term in recent years as it has become synonymous with crappy flat black paint jobs and shoddy construction.

The Welderup builds are far from that. Sure they are built with a no fucks given approach, and are often a little rough around the edges, but a lot of that is intentional and masking a lot of serious attention to detail.

sema-2014-welderup-hoosiers

sema-2014-welderup-legs-3

Take the diesel rod for example, all around the front of the 28 Dodge body is trimmed with a chain saw blade that really adds to the cars agricultural feel.

Bike chain is used as a side mirror mount, and a saw blade adorns the leading edge of the windshield visor and makes up the body molding around the car.

sema-2014-welderup-legs-8

It’s also got an interesting hand crank ignition system, sure it probably just simulates a push button start at the end of the day but it sure looks cool and is a throwback to the days when you actually did have to crank these cars to get them to run.

sema-2014-welderup-legs-4

The Diesel Rod also had a pretty cheeky set of front legs beneath the grill, had I seen those outside of Vegas I might have raised an eyebrow but being in the city of sin they fit quite well.

sema-2014-welderup-legs-6

The Gasser, which despite the name actually sits more similar to a street freak, sat not too far from the Diesel Rod and had a 498 Big Block Chevy with a 671 blower literally bursting out of the hood.

sema-2014-welderup-street-freak-2

The ladder bar 4 link setup that propelled this car up into the sky also provided a look at the Winners quick change rear end.

sema-2014-welderup-street-freak

Quick change rears seem to be a reoccurring theme among the Welderup vehicles as the most recent creation in their line up also sported one, in addition to a four-cylinder turbo diesel motor.

sema-2014-welderup-legs-5

The Weldereup Pièce de résistance had to be the “Quit Your Bitchin” Ford Model A.

sema-2014-welderup-quit-yourbitchin-3

The sentiment behind the side graphics was perfect. Don’t like it? Quit Your Bitchin’ it’s here, it’s done, and it has a blown hemi that –if it runs half as powerful as it looks– would have no problem taking down most challengers in a straight line.

sema-2014-welderup-quit-yourbitchin-1

sema-2014-welderup-quit-yourbitchin-2rewm

sema-2014-welderup-rear

The stance was on the nose too, high enough to be imposing, but just enough reverse rake to throw back once again to the iconic gasser squat.

My favorite part though? The reinterpretation of ‘Mr. Horsepower’, the famous red and yellow Clay Smith cams mascot. If you look close you can see the cigar hanging out of the right side of his mouth!

Event Coverage: SEMA 2014 – Groundhogs and Alley Cats

0

The SEMA train is slowly coming to a halt, with today being the last SEMA post that is not centred around one vehicle. Traffic and feedback around the coverage has been phenomenal so far (thanks) so letting it come to an end, and transitioning into the winter content struggle is a little sad, but alas I am mostly at the end of my once bottomless pit of photos.

Of course no Stance Is Everything SEMA coverage is complete without a look at some of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI) cars so that is where things will get started today before going back to the general show coverage.

Street Car Alley

This year the OUSCI cars at SEMA were housed in a completely new area of the show that I would have missed had I not stumbled upon it Tuesday night while crossing the parking lot trying to catch the bus.

Fighting the urge to reschedule dinner plans around my shooting the cars right then and there, I came back the next day to take a better look at the impressive functional builds, I didn’t get them all but I got a good selection.

Since the event has now come and gone I am able to attach results with each car so you can see how they did as well as how they look.

Sadly I don’t have pictures of 26th through to 1, but I do know that Brian Hobaugh won, who I’m sure you all know drives this:

Around the show in 80 steps

As I knew my last day at the show was coming to a close I really tried to hustle my way around to see as much as I could, of course the second I got on the bus I realized how many things I had missed. It sucks but that is SEMA after all, where seeing it all is impossible.

SEMA Showstpper: Double Down Double Up

0

Fuller Hot Rods has achieved a Stance Is Everything first; SEMA Showstopper honours two years in a row. What’s it take to achieve such an award? Well start building an awesome AWD bare metal ’32 Ford one year, and finish it the next.

In the time since the car was last showcased the Fuller team has buttoned the project up into one incredibly bad ass machine, which they showcased in a fairly unique bare-it-all fashion at this year’s show.

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-detail-4

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-detail-5

Last year I didn’t know much about the drive-line, but this year I’ve confirmed that it has a 6-speeed Tremec transmission that transfers power to two Halibrand quick change centre sections. Between the rails sits a naturally aspirated, nitrous free, Kurt Urban built Kaase Boss 429 Ford engine that makes 820hp on pump gas.

Most of the raw metal has been retained in this near final iteration, with just the right amount of paint and detail coming in to give it that genuine race car feel.

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-side

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-front-wheel

Last year peering into the car would reward you with a view of the transmission, followed by the floor, but this year an incredibly detailed interior intercepts the ground.

Like everything else this interior is a beautiful blend of function and form, set off by a retro gauge panel, trick steering column assembly, and classic pin striping.

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-detail-2

sema-2014-fuller-hot-rods-double-down-detail-3

Pretty well completed in time for the show, the car hasn’t seen much motion other than on and off a trailer but it sounds like that is fit to change really soon. Hopefully when it does a camera or two are on hand to take in the carnage.

Theme Tuesdays: Chevy Trucks of SEMA 2014

4

There’s always a great selection of trucks at the SEMA show, but this year there seemed to be a bumper crop of incredibly well-built Chevrolets, most of which were c10s.

Instead of further dispersing these trucks throughout the final remaining SEMA posts, I’ve decided to round-up the ones that have already been posted, along with the rest that haven’t, into this week’s Theme Tuesday.

An absolute stunner from the SEMA 2014 kick off post

SEMA Showstopper: Ring Brothers Do It Again

3

When it comes to builders that leave no bolt un-turned, The Ring Brothers are one of the best. I’m not exactly sure what is in the water (or cheese) in Wisconsin, but whatever substance it is has given the Brothers Ring a virtually unparalleled eye for detail.

I’ve been a fan of their automotive creations since I first laid eyes on the Producer in 2010, and I’ve only been further impressed by the builds that have followed it like the ADRNLN Pantera, and today’s subject The Recoil.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-badge

The Recoil may have started as a Chevelle but now it only bares custom badging because Chevy had little to do with this vehicles current condition.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-rear-end

Working from the rear forward the first thing that stands out is the carbon fiber bumper that fits almost impossibly well.

In front of that bumper the exhaust exits just behind the newly released 20×13 HRE Ring Brothers Series wheel.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-trunk

The inside of the trunk hints at the level of interior detail in this car, but things reallyget quite serious when you open the door and take a look.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-interior-4

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-interior-2

Resembling a fighter jet cockpit more than the inside of a car, the focal point of the interior might be the hand crafted, multi-piece, aluminium seats but that’s hardly all that is going on.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-interior-1

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-interior-3

Everything, and I do mean everything, inside the interior has been hand crafted or modified to a level that few are willing to go and it all flows together as though it came that way from the factory.

Stepping back to take it all you really get to see how nicely all of the colours work together especially the unique, subtle, custom BASF sand storm paint colour.

sema-2014-ring-brothers-recoil-wheel

Under the hood is a Whipple charged Wegner Motorsorts LS7 that makes a healthy 980 HP to the wheels. The motor has been given a few cosmetic touches as well, including one-off fuel rail covers that are constructed to exactly match the design on the supercharger.

WTF Friday: The Lighter Side Of SEMA

0

Every year at SEMA a few oddities make there way through the convention centre doors and this year one such oddity was the Big V Designs Dodge Ram 1500.

This truck was impossible to miss and, ridiculousness aside, from a distance it was clear to see that the paint work was exceptionally well done, so being the adventurous soul I am I side stepped the models and took a closer look.

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-front-three-quarter

Whomever did the paint on this truck is obviously very skilled, and from a technical stand point it was one of the best paint jobs at the show.

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-front

Stylistically however let’s just say it isn’t exactly my brand of lager.

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-front-2

What I did find pretty interesting was the pre plastic surgery Megan Fox portrait on the hood, I wonder if you would have to pay to use a celebrities likeness in this manner?

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-interior

The truck is, predictably, full of audio and the green theme runs throughout the interior, even extending to the custom green door windows.

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-suspension1

The tilt bed revealed that the frame was also painted to match the exterior, but it also showcased the trucks biggest short comings, the suspension work.

velocity-wheels-truck-sema-2014-suspension2

After all the man hours put into the paint and audio of this truck it was quite sad a horribly dated (and dangerous) mono leaf bag set-up. In today’s day of air ride technology a mono leaf is the static equivalent of cutting your springs. How truly sad and unfortunate.

Thankfully there’s a whole lot more quality builds to come from SEMA 2014 so check back soon for more coverage!

SEMA Showstopper: 86’d The Competition

2

Having three media houses go head-to-head building the best FR-S possible is a stroke of marketing genius and with pride, reputation, and the respect of their fanbase on the line it was guaranteed that GT Channel, Super Street, and Speedhunters would hold back nothing for 2014’s Scion Tuner Challenge.

As the days leading up to the event decreased, and the cars became more complete, the battle between the three brands really started to heat up, with Super Street taking an impressive lead in the on-line voting segment. Thought to damn near have the award in the bag things all changed when the judges began their on site scrutinization.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-1

The winning team Speedhunters entry drew inspiration from multiple sources, resulting in an FR-S unlike any of the others in the competition, and unlike any I’ve seen to date.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-6

The throwback livery designed by Andy Blackmore was a perfect fit for all of the Toyota racing heritage the ZN6 chassis embodies and the track day/IMSA vintage racer aesthetic couldn’t have been better executed.

The graphics paired with 17×9 and 17×11 Rotiform wheels and a smoothed KM4SH kit the car truly looked the part of a vintage race vehicle.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-10

Of course looking the part isn’t nearly enough, so Speedhunters went the distance and made sure the car could drive the part as well. Everything under the hood that you wouldn’t find in a proper race car was deleted, giving the powerful Cosworth supercharged motor a proper stage to be displayed.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-8

Forced induction alone wouldn’t be enough to win the competition, so any unsightly harnesses and hoses were tucked by Chasebays, the stock hardware was replaced and a few SH logos were strategically placed under the louvered hood.

Obviously the suspension and brakes couldn’t remain stock either and a Wilwood ‘Superlite’ brake kit sits behind the Rotiforms, while components from Raceseng, RS*R, and Superpro and SPC Performance all come together to make up the handling package.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-7

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-11

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-4

The interior too reflects that of a race car with brushed aluminium trim, custom JPM Coachworks leather trim, Cobra seat, custom half dash, custom engraved wheel… you get the idea custom, custom, custom. The number of one off pieces found throughout this car is seriously impressive, and it’s that acute eye for detail that really put it over the top.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-2

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-9

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-5

It’s the small details combined with the large ones that made this car the winner. Things like the tire pressure markings on the tires, the wind-shield retainers, the track day stickers, and the air jack/fuel ports come off completely authentic because, in addition to aesthetically fitting in, they are things real race cars have and given the opportunity will allow the car to perform like a real race car should.

The fact that this car was built predominately by one man in his garage just makes this build all that much more impressive, and the award it took home further deserved.

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-12

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-3

Congrats Keith, Andy, and the Speedhunters team on the award and a phenomenal job well done!

Event Coverage: SEMA 2014 – Function For Days, Style For Miles

1

It’s pretty crazy to think that in only two and a half days at SEMA I was able to amass so much coverage that, even still I’m not through editing it all. I couldn’t imagine shooting a show like this in the early days of digital photography where captured cards held next to nothing. I would need a back pack just for storage media, never mind how difficult it must have been in the days of film!

Like the rest of the event coverage thus far today’s posts dips both inside and outside the Las Vegas Convention Centre and contains a little bit of everything, before ending with the Scion showcase.

Since the rig belongs (or is at least going to be loaned to) Riley Hawk they had to put a bit of skateboarding influence into it
sema-2014-scion-riley-hawk-build-interior
The interior played the part too. The wood grain plays well with the couch like leather seats, CB radio, and 8 track player
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-gt-channel
This Mine’s styled car was GT Channel’s 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge entry. I’d show you more but I completely brain farted and only took this one photo of it
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street
I did however get very shutter happy with Superstreet’s build
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-7
As a big BBS LM fan I really appreciated the wheel choice and finish on this car, great brake set-up as well
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-4
The shaved the rivet holes on the Greddy/Rocket Bunny kit smooths out the look considerably. Both SpeedHunters and Super Street ended up going this route with their kits
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-2
The greatest talking point on the Super Street build had to the Individual throttle bodies

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-6

sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-3
It is currently the only FR-S in the world running ITBs which is a monumental feat all it’s own
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-super-street-8
The trunk was equipped with Pioneer gear and a cool ‘infinity window’ enclosures
sema-2014-scion-tuner-challenge-speedhunters-2
As impressive a build as the Super Street FR-S was the win ended up going to this car built by Keith Charvionia and Andy Blackmore representing team SpeedHunters. Tomorrow, for the next SEMA mini-feature I will highlight a few of the reasons why

Theme Tuesdays: SEMA 2014 Fender Overdrive

1

People seem to be a little up in arms about the over saturation of wide-bodies, wide fenders, and bolt on fenders at SEMA 2014. But knowing that SEMA is an event designed to showcase the latest, greatest, trends and innovations of the automotive community, what did you expect?

Wide fenders, especially of the bolt on type, are extremely popular right now and tuners like Liberty Walk and Rocket Bunny are leading the charge followed by a variety of one off fabricators around the globe.

Off all the trends the automotive community has birthed this is actually one of the better ones so in an effort to embrace our new wide fender over lords here’s an onslaught of fenders on steroids from this year’s SEMA show.

sema-2014-wide-body-bmw-wagon
This E61 Wagon went the blister fender route and came out very well if you ask me. If the front came down just a hair more at resting height it would be perfect
Another blister style all metal example was this Fit built by Neil Tijin. A bit extreme for my taste but impressive none the less
Another blister style all metal example was this Fit built by Neil Tijin. A bit extreme for my taste but impressive none the less
sema-2014-honda-fit-kenny-vinces-1
Close by Neil’s entry was Kenny Vinces’ Honda fit
sema-2014-honda-fit-kenny-vinces-2
Bagged, boosted, and bottle fed this build as no joke
sema-2014-honda-fit-kenny-vinces-3
The flares went with the over all aesthetic quite well over all
sema-2014-liberty-walk-gtr-airlift-1
Moving on from Honda’s there was a large showing of kitted bagged GTRs. Air Lift Performance had this beauty in their booth
sema-2014-liberty-walk-gtr-airlift-2
The trunk install was incredible
sema-2014-liberty-walk-gtr-airrrex
There were a few GTRs Airrex kits too, like this Rocket Bunny example that was sitting in their booth
This Liberty Walk equipped model sat outside
sema-2014-rsv-forged-rocket-bunny-gtr
and another Airrex/Rocket Bunny example sat in the RSV Forged booth
sema-2014-rocket-bunny-nissan-gtr-airrex
finally yet another Rocket Bunny model sat in all by it’s lonesome
sema-2014-porsche-rwb-forgestar-1
With Liberty Walk and Rocket Bunny being so dominant this year it was nice to see a RWB build in the Forgestar wheels booth.
sema-2014-liberty-walk-porsche-csf
Seemingly tired of being known as just a dress up brand Liberty Walk also had their kits on two very function Forward Porsche’s at the show. Speedhunters has a feature on this CSF Cooling, BBI Autosport build that boasts 668 HP
sema-2014-porsche-liberty-walk-optima
Personally I was partial to this one, the orange and black theme really made it pop
sema-2014-porsche-liberty-walk-optima-2
And the OUSCI stickers on the side hint that a day after the show it would be driven hard
sema-2014-benz-flares-airlift-hre
Sitting in the NitroFil booth was this Rocket Bunny/HRE Wheels/Air Lift project, a great looking car
sema-2014-lexus-rc-rocket-bunny
Of course there was also the Rocket Bunny Lexus RC, this car had quite the crowd around it at all times, otherwise there would be more photos of it
sema-2014-liberty-walk-bmw
They say chrome (well matte silver technically) don’t get you home but hell this M4 disagrees
sema-2014-liberty-walk-bmw-rear
This second white M4 was in the Iforged wheel booth, and this shot gives you an idea just how much wider the car is after a LB kit
FD’s got the Rocket Bunny treatment as well, outside there was this rendition which was posted in part one of the 2014 SEMA show coverage
sema-2014-rocket-bunny-fd-rx7-enkei-1
Inside Enkei had this stunner sitting on their new 6666 wheels
sema-2014-rocket-bunny-fd-rx7-enkei-2
The ‘Ironman’ color combination works incredibly well on this car.
sema-2014-rocket-bunny-s15-profile
Stepping outside once more, I’m sure you all remember Kenji Yaminaka’s Rocket Bunny S15 from part one of the coverage

sema-2014-rocket-bunny-s15-rear-2

sema-2014-rocket-bunny-s15-front-three-quarter
As you can see when I shot the car on the Monday it wasn’t quite finished as on Tuesday it had a lip and a lot of Vinyl
sema-2014-rocket-bunny-s15-motor
A quick peak under the hood reveals a Dodge R5P7 Nascar powerplant
sema-2014-liberty-walk-ferrari-1
Also outside, and oddly enough in the DUB booth, was the Liberty Walk 458 Italia
sema-2014-liberty-walk-ken-meri-1
Which was beside the LB Kenmeri which is a car really quite unlike any other I’ve seen before
sema-2014-liberty-walk-ken-meri-2
Heaven only knows how long those tires have been stretched on there for!
sema-2014-liberty-walk-lamborgini-forgiato-1
Since I manged to miss the Rocket Bunny NSX I will close things out with the Liberty Walk Aventador
sema-2014-liberty-walk-lamborgini-forgiato-2
Say what you will about the overfender ‘fad’ I doubt any of you would kick this out of your garage!

Check back tomorrow for even more coverage from SEMA 2014!
