Major League Debut

2

Throughout the season I’ve been dropping hints here and there about my excitement for The Jalopy Jam Up. As one of the largest (if not only) traditionally styled pre-64 car shows in the area I knew documenting it was something I simply had to do.

Since the event promised to be both epic and unique I shot an email over to Speedhunters in hopes that I might be able to do some guest coverage for them.

I’m extremely proud to say that they went for the idea and my guest coverages is currently live right now on the speedhunters.com!

I’d like to thank each of you reading this for the motivation to try and get my work out to a larger brand, and if you have a chance please go check out the post and leave a comment because I would love to do more with SH in the future and the post generating a buzz would only help make that easier.

Don’t worry SIE won’t be going anywhere, and your regularly scheduled Theme Tuesday post will be coming up later today.

While at Berlin Klassik yesterday I spotted (actually I was told to go check out) this Cummins powered Dodge Hot Rod.

Originally parked outside of the venue the organizers let him move it inside because it was causing quite the stir.

special_guest_3

The body is a ’45 Dodge power Wagon, the frame is custom, and the power plant is a Cummins 5.9 turbo diesel.

special_guest_2

The truck was apparently built in Ottawa two summers ago but came to the Toronto area fairly recently. It’s currently for sale however so who knows where it will be in a few months time.

WTF Friday: Like A Sir

Ever want the feeling of driving a Nissan S13 without looking like you are driving an s13? Maybe something with a little bit more class and some vintage flare to seperate you from the skid racers?

Well then perhaps the Misuoka Le Seyde is for you.

likeasir1

The Le-Seyde is a limited run (500 units) car built on the Z13 chassis that resembles the Zimmer Golden Spirit (a car which itself is based on a Mustang).

Generally Misuka’s seem to stay in Japan but someone managed to get one sent across to BC and it’s currently for sale on Autotrader for $14,850.

In case the ad goes MIA here is the description:

A production Car from Japan , maybe a handful in Canada . Will stop people in their tracks to take a second look. When you drive this car people will be turning their heads. The release was limited, only several hundred units of each model were produced; the demand for them was guaranteed.

In May 1990 Mitsuoka released an original Le-Seyde model; its 500-unit issue was sold out in 4 days.

Someone should buy it and slide it because that too is something they do in Japan.

Event Coverage: 2014 Reunited Car Show – Pt. 2

3

Back today with the conclusion of the 2014 Reunited coverage, and since I cleared out most of the trucks and classics in Tuesday’s post today we will focus on the cars that made up the rest of the show field.

As I stressed in part one a key part of what made this show great was variety, so I’ve tried my best to represent that today.

From both a spectator and photography perspective I hope that Reunited retains this location for subsequent years because the venue really lends itself to photos that are more appealing to look at compared to your standard parking lot fare.

Car Limbo

For 2014 the vehicle limbo was brought to you by Nine-O-Five Rides and stanceiseverything.com.

The Truly Unique

Being a show targeted at such a large section of the enthusiast crowd Reunited drew out a number of unique builds. I know a lot of you are interested in the more left field kind of builds so I’ve showcased a few below.

2014-reunited-car-show-bus
In my humble opion this would be much cooler if it layed body over kit

Two Of A Kind

Event Coverage: 2014 Reunited Car Show – Pt. 1

Showcasing Imports, Euros, Minitrucks and most importantly lowriders Scrape By The Lake was one of the best shows in Ontario, and after hearing nothing but great things I attended for first time in 2009. I am glad I did because after my second attendance in 2010 the show was no more.

Since then no event has truly been able to fill the void left by the Scrape’s departure so one of the original organizers decided to launch a new show for 2014 called ‘Reunited’.

Reunited promised to be a spiritual successor to the Scrape legacy, and was a must attend on my list for 2014. With a total of 307 vehicles showing, including a healthy amount of minitrucks and classics, I wasn’t at all disappointed with my trek out to Niagara and I shot all day long.

Coverage from this show will be broken into two parts and today’s includes the classics, minitrucks, truck limbo, lowriders, and crowd favourite hop off.

Classic Cars and Minitrucks

Personally one of the things that made Scrape By The Lake so great was the fact that everyone came out and Reunited had the same vibe. Lots of variety and lots of quality.

Truck Limbo

Oddly enough Reunited is only the second truck limbo I’ve been to that took place on pavement, it was nice to see the trucks go at it without the worry of traction.

WTF Friday: The Survivor Customs ‘E30Type’

3

While kicking around a BMX forum I saw the following written underneath a photo of a fairly rough around the edges looking Jaguar E Type.

E30 m3 engine in it, builder and the photographer are both local riders. Love it.

When I read that I wondered why someone would yank an s14 out of an e30 M3 and put it in a Jaguar of all things?

e30-type-11

e30-type-10

As it turns out the poster was slightly incorrect in his description, but that doesn’t mean the car is any less crazy.

Survivor Customs took what looks to be one of the worst condition E Type shells in existence and plunked it over the chassis of a late model e30 convertible.

e30-type-3
The E Type shell started out the roughest of the two halves
e30-type-1
The e30 however didn’t look all that bad, a little mismatched with the randomw MTECH II rear bumper but not bad

Then again…

On the way to becoming what some (not I) would call an unholy union an M50 motor made it’s way under the modified Jaguar hood and a custom dash was made for the interior.

The car is now cleared bare metal out and about and even graces the cover of the latest issue of Practical Performance Car Magazine.

Build progress is here on their fanpage.

Lead Kings

0

A week or two ago a friend of mine invited me out to a small car show at his cottage grounds, and since it’s been a bit of an up and down summer I leapt at the chance to get out of the city for a few hours to enjoy a slower pace and a dip in the water.

As it turns out the show was one of two going on in the area which meant before the other let out it was a little slow. Things got pretty serious pretty quick when these two Lead Kings Canada members rolled up and aired out.

Both of these cars were works of art and made up the bulk of my coverage from the show.

This car is evidently soon to go back under the knife for a new roof chop because the current one is ‘all wrong’ I can’t see the mistake but I look forward to seeing it after!

I really need to get into a classic sooner rather than later, coverage from the show will probably trickle out onto the site between bouts of usual event coverage.

Theme Tuesdays: Hot Rods With Modern Wheels

2

Wheels can make or break a car, and in many cases people are very, very particular about what wheels they expect to see, or will put, on a hot rod.

On the flip side there are those that don’t follow convention and are willing to bolt whatever they want to whatever they’ve built. Today’s Theme Tuesday is all about that.

Hate it or love it you can’t ever stop someone from doing exactly what they want to their car.

hot_rod_modern_wheels_13
One thing I noticed instantly while pulling this one together is that a lot of people using modern wheels are doing it around Factory Five Racing 33 kits
I’ve actually seen this one in person, it’s on Foreglines I believe and sounds nasty as all hell

The Birth Of A Dynasty: Mike’s 1968 ‘Ghiaru’

4

When writing about builds it’s far too easy to focus on their mechanical make up and completely neglect the human elements like friendships and memories created in tandem with the final driveable product.

The talking points of Mike’s ’68 Karmann Ghia build –namely the extremely low static ride height, the turbo Subaru power plant, and almost impossibly well done rattle can finish– would make a great read but simply prattling those items off with a few filler words would only at best tell half the story.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-1

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-2

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-3

Mike has been a Volkswagen enthusiast for some time now and before his departure from the GTA he built numerous air and water-cooled projects, some of which still roam the area today.

A few years ago he parted with all his wheeled possessions so that he could pack up and migrate west to the oil rich lands of Calgary.

Like any true enthusiast his passion followed him and through a camera, Neal (a mutual friend), and a surrogate vehicle purchase Mike ended up meeting Jesse.

Jesse was another seasoned Volkswagen enthusiast who had a slight ‘gotta catch ’em all’ vehicle acquisition problem.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-4

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-5

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-6

Forging a quick friendship based around a love of beards, VWs, impractical ride heights, and a good time Mike and Jesse quickly began talking shop and in short order previous builds and future projects began to be the focal point of their conversations.

A bit of back and forth revealed that Jesse was keen to sell one of the cars in his collection, and Mike was equally keen to wrench on something new.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-17

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-18

The ‘problem’ was Jesse wanted to sell Mike a Karmann Ghia, and up until that point Mike had no real interest in that particular platform.

As a friend with Mike’s best interests at heart, Jesse was persistent that Mike should own the car and by his urging Mike dug a little deeper into the Ghia community and found the inspiration he needed to start the build.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-10

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-14

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-15

After taking ownership Mike and Neal (who at this point had moved out to Calgary to catch up with the car Mike helped him purchase) managed to score shop space incredibly close to Jesses’s house and with that the stars began to shift into alignment for the Ghia project to move forward.

As the hours turned into days, grinding sparks flew, and paint fumes hung in the air Mike and Jesse came to the conclusion that their mutual interests in auto mobiles and photography needed a home and thus The Dub Dynasty idea emerged.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-13

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-12

It was a simple idea really, a small logo to put on their content and a central place to find it, quickly a few stickers were run and a new logo was stuck to the back glass of the Ghia.

Drawing new found inspiration from their newly minted joint project things really started to move forward; the ride height was brought down, the body was painstakingly restored, and the once neglected Ghia finally started to resemble a road worthy car.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-19

To give the Ghia speed and reliability it never knew, Mike opted to go with a turbo 2.2L Subaru motor and while cutting away the firewall, raising the transmission, and modifying the motor mounts all came relatively easy, getting the motor to fire in it’s new home proved a little more difficult.

Eagerly looking for a distraction from the tedium of night-after-night engine diagnostic sessions, Jesse and Mike decided to bring a bit of Kustom flavor to the car with a white roof adorned with incredibly detailed patterned lace, faded, sections.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-16

The roof was just the thing the car needed to tie together a few of the other personal touches Mike included in the build like the leather hood straps, wood grain wheel, and untouched bodywork around the drivers side headlamp.

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-7

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-8

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-9

1969-vw-karmann-ghia-ghia-subaru-swap-10a

With the car truly visually complete it was all hands on deck for Mike, his dad, and Jesse who literally threw everything they had at the motor to come to life. The countless nights eventually paid off as the motor finally let it self be heard through the custom stinger exhaust putting an exclamation point on what they’ve created.

From 2013 to now Jesse, Mike, Neal and Mr. McConnell have built much more than a car, they’ve also built a Dynasty.

WTF Friday: I’ll Take Two Of Everything

0

I’ll be straight with you guys, the idea of a one photo WTF Friday never sits quite right with me, but not posting this Volkswagen Beetle at all doesn’t sit well with me either.

I searched high and low (maybe just low) for more photos of this over the top, presumably drag prepared (wheelie bar slots), twin turbo, bottle feed beetle and just kept coming across the same photo.

beetleeverything

With the amount of crazy going on in this picture I would usually call shenanigans but the photo actually does look pretty real, if you accept the fact that the owner went into his local performance shop and asked for two of everything except the nitrous bottle.

Anyone out there have more info?

…Bueller?

Update: The car is from Malta, and here’s a shot of it with the wheelie bars attached. No 1/4 times or build yet
