Mini Feature: Eric’s Mint Del Sol

6

Del Sols have always stuck out as interesting little cars, they tease with the look of a mid engine sports coupe while their underpinnings are actually hinged on the ever popular Civic chassis. As a successor to the much loved and ever popular Honda CRX Del Sols never seemed to catch on quite the same, however for every 10 people who look over the Del Sol there is one individual who is willing to put some time and money into this light and nimble chassis, Erich Hachey is one of those individuals.

I first spotted Eric’s car at Scrape By The Lake 2009, I am pretty sure it was the only Del Sol at the show and it looked pretty nice sitting in the grass in front of the hotel. The second time I saw Eric’s car was at Importfest and even though there were 7 other Del Sols at the show Eric’s is the only one I noticed.

While it was fairly obvious that Eric’s Del Sol had some work done to it, it was  not until I joined Pas Nation and Eric contacted my directly that I got to know just how much work he has put into his car.

Eric, a Hamilton native, has been into the turner scene for about eight years shortly after getting his liscense and first car (an 89 Civic) at age 17.  Like many car enthusiasts he has owned quite a few cars since his first and they have all received a few modifications. His current daily, a 2005 turbo Jetta, for example has about 10 grand worth of money into it just to get from point a to point b.

Off all the cars he has had Eric decided to turn his Del Sol into his show piece and while he didn’t have any pictures of the car in progress to make this a full feature he did have a few pictures and a lot of info to share about the final product.

Right out of the gate Eric was not happy with the factory performance of the Del Sol and therefore swapped the factory motor in favor of a 99 Integra GSR motor with a plethora of bolt on modifications including an AEM intake, AEM fuel rail, AEM cam gears, and venom throttle body, a Fluidyne race rad keeps everything cool while a clutch master stage 2 clutch helps put the power to the ground. Finally a DC sports Header and 2.5″ exhaust was then installed to let everyone know when Eric feels like getting well acquainted with the speed limits here in Ontario.

To balance out show and go Eric spent a great deal of time and care shaving the emblems, wing, antenna, rear license plate and third brake light off of the body. He also sourced out and modified a Buddy Club Body kit and mixed 1950 Ford green with HOK flake to create the unique mint green color his Honda now wears.

Alll of the body modifications to this car cleaned up the rear end very well
All of the body modifications to this car cleaned up the rear end very well

Eric knew that the stock stereo wouldn’t cut it on the show scene so he replaced the stock deck 7″ pioneer head unit, the stock speakers with Zapco components, and added some thump in the trunk with 2 OZ audio subs and installed some 2 Kenwood amps and a capacitor to power it all. As a final I.C.E. touch and a throw back to his 80s roots a 15″ tv was added with a classic Nintendo Entertainment system.

While the interior of the car was out for the I.C.E. install the door panels were replaced with custom fiber glass versions and the seats were wrapped in black leather and alligator skin. For the icing on the cake interior wise Eric replaced the factory shift knob with a Coors light beer tap.

I wonder what cops say about the beer tap

Last but not least around here the stance was brought down via Nuespeed springs and Koni shocks while the rolling stock is 17 MSR wheels painted black.

While the Del Sol might not be a popular platform among the stance crowd I think that Eric’s unique sense of style and tasteful modifications help remind us that this platform does have a lot of potential and in the right hands (and not these hands) can become something worth taking a second look at.

Thanks to Eric for contacting me regarding the mini feature and being the first featured ride of 09.

Double Build Update

3

Looks like Christmas was good to some this year as two of the builds I have been sharing got pretty significant updates over the winter holiday, both the M-tricks Autosports 2002 build and Pat Cyr’s F20 AE86 build were updated so let’s take a look at what’s been done.

Pat’s F20 AE86 Build

Pats full rebuild of his drift car seems to be coming along quite nicely. The floor has been cleaned up and reinforced and he is knocking off the beginning stages of getting that Honda s2000 motor to sit between the Toyota frame rails.

Since this car was completely stripped down it will be awhile before we see complete shots of it’s new stance but Pat was nice enough to add a teaser to his facebook account that gets me excited.

Cleaned up and reinforced Pats chassis is looking sick
More look at the amount of care that is being taken on this rebuild
The F20 getting used to it's new surroundings
The transmission tunnel needed a little trim
Looks like Pat is going to be rocking pro street stance this year

2002 Widebody Build

When we left this build last the rust repair was just being finished and the fender flares were being grafted to the factory body.

Now all of the restoration and body modification are complete and the car has been rolled into the paint booth for to get some color. The owner is keeping the color secret until the car is completely finished, I am sure it will be worth the wait.

First primer/guide coat, those flares are looking fierce
I'm sure once it's all said and done the front end will come down just a hair
Masked and ready for primer
Primered and blocked
Base color added but the colors been removed, looks like a two tone is going on

I’ll keep my eye on both of these builds for you so keep checking back for updates.

Sick Sunday Swagger

2

I saw these two cars today in a local topic about flushess. Neither are really flush but both are on that One Brands Trash vibe I love so much.

This MK4 is sittin just perfect on these replica Lambo kicks
Who knew Volvo and Ferrari shared the same bolt pattern?

Off to do this and that before heading back to work tomorrow.

The Top Content of 2009

0

In case your hangover didn’t remind you it’s New Years 2010 today and 2009 will always be a memorable year for myself and Stance Is Everything since it’s the year it started. When I first wrote  this post on June 14th I wasn’t quite sure what I was starting but with the site is on the verge of cracking 75,000 page views I think I’ve started something some what significant. With that number in mind and the Barret Jackson Auction playing all day on my TV I figure that there is no better time than now to take a look at the most popular content of 2009.

Top Winter Wednesday of 2009

Winter Wednesdays are a relatively new thing here at S.I.E. since winter (thankfully) took it’s time to get started. At only three posts deep I didn’t expect this category to pull out crazy numbers but it seems to be doing fairly well despite it’s infancy. The most popular Winter Wednesday post so far has been the Winter Stretch: Union Style post, it seems that quite a few people had thought of stretching winter tires before and now that Union has done it I foresee more people following.

Stretched out winters are the talk of the town

Top Theme Tuesday post of 2009

I have a lot of fun doing the Theme Tuesday posts and since Tuesdays are typically my highest trafficked day of the week don’t expect this category to die out any time in the near future. Really it’s no surprise that the Girls With Hot Rides post is not only the most viewed Theme Tuesday post but also the most commented post of the year. Guys like cars, and guys like girls, that’s no surprise, what made this post different was that it was focused on the cars the girls drove and not so much the girls themselves.

According to my Tynt statistics this is the most downloaded image of the year, go figure

Top WTF Friday post of 2009

WTF Friday’s are another one of my favorite posts to do since  the internet provides no shortage of automotive tomfoolery or off the wall odd ball automobiles worth sharing. Sometimes I have a hard time deciding on exactly what to run and what is too ‘run of the mill’ for a WTF Friday post. Of all the the WTF Fridays I did this year I was a little surprised to see that the WTF Friday featuring street legal bumper cars was the most popular. This post brought in posts from all over the internet including quite a few guitar forums, odd.

This photo still makes me laugh

Top Article of 2009

I’ve really only written a few things that I would consider ‘articles‘ in this first year so I didn’t expect the numbers for this category to be too high but thanks to some Twitter love from Speed Hunters I’m glad to see that this article on Function Vs Form shot to the top of the most visited article list.

This car: Fuction > Form

Top Event Coverage post of 2009

Going out and covering events was a great way to spend a lot of this summer, even more so the free events when I was unemployed, the GTA has a lot of high caliber cars of all sorts so being able to document these and pull inspiration from them is a great thing. Importfest was one of the last shows I covered in 2009 and the car that made the Importfest coverage the most popular of all of the events I covered I almost didn’t take a picture of. Thankfully I did and now the ‘Tekken Car‘ is internet famous because of pictures I took. Shouts to kotaku for running this car on their home page.

Poor Taurus...

Top Readers Ride post of 2009

The Readers Rides category is still fairly new with under 10 posts but Adrian and Will promoted their Readers Ride post hard and shot to the top of the list with the most traffic. These guys are always up to something and I can’t wait to see what these guys are up to next.

Friends don't let friend's drive stock

Top Featured Photographer post of 2009

I’ve only been able to line up a few Featured Photographers this year, but I am hoping to line up quite a few more for 2010. The most viewed photography was the work of my friend and early S.I.E. supporter Jon O. Jon was down to help out from the word go and is working on getting some larger Stance Is Everything stickers done for me as well so I am glad to see that my blog is helping his work get more exposure.

I still have no idea what this is

Top Featured Ride of 2009

I would like to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to feature their car on the site regardless of how many people viewed or commented on your ride I appreciate it more than words can describe. I have been lucky enough to feature a diverse collection of amazing cars this year and it looks like 2010 is going to be more of the same. Stepahines 335i held down the top spot for just narrowly getting beat out by Chris Savard’s featured Lighting which took top honors with a very popular month of December. I’m pretty sure that the Infamous Project is just starting up now as well.

Chris is a lucky guy

Thanks for hanging on throughout 2009 and hope to have all of you back for the ride in 2010!

Speed 3 Flushed out

3

I spotted this on the fatlace forums and had posted it on my local Mazda 3 board but after looking at it and looking at it again I decided I should post it here as well. At first I was not a huge fan of the 3 spoke wheels but they really grew on me.

The wheels are Super Advan SA3’s and upfront they are 18×8.5 with an offset of 28et after spacers and out back they are 18×9.5 with an offset of 35. All 4 tires are wrapped in 215/40/18 Federal 595ss tires.

The wheels and ride height give this car a really solid looking stance
I always like how similar the body styling of these cars is to the regular 3
I really need to pick up some spacers and dial out the camber on my car for the upcoming season

Clean and to the point

This car looks very very hungry
Parting Shot

More photos of this car can be found in the Sunday Boredom w/ Mazdaspeed 3 thread on the fatlace forums.

I probably won’t post again until tomorrow so have a safe New Years Eve everyone and be sure to have a designated driver or use public transportation, I’d like to have all my readers and potential readers make it into the new year uninjured!

Winter Wednesdays: Banzai!

5

Today’s  Winter Wednesday pic is pretty much on par with the weather we have been having here in the GTA. Small amounts of accumulation and a lot of slush and gray. I’m not really complaining but it’s not like I am stoked on it either. Anyway this 510 owner decided to have a little fun with the snow on his car.

I like 510s, infact I like them a lot. In a perfect world I would own one of them along with hundreds of other cars, too bad the worlds not perfect. This Banzai flag however is pretty perfect for being made out of snow on the hood of a car, maybe snow hood designs will be a new trend of winter 2010?

That 510 in the background looks like Anth's from buildthreads.. could it be?

Hopefully it’s dry enough today for me to wash my car, it’s filthy…

Going Against The Grain

11

I first saw this Subaru posted on Noah’s blog but until my friend Dave sent me the link to the picture thread on NASIOC I had not seen any photos of it in action. It’s good to see the owner uses the lift as it would have been a shame for him to build it just to get under the skin of people like myself and the crew over at HellaFlush.

No need to worry about speed bumps...
...with this much ground clearance you could run over a small animal and not even notice
I bet the HF guys got a chuckle out of this
Flexin
Monster truckin!

I respect the owner for going against the grain but it sort of seems like he took his hate from one extreme and went to the other as it looks almost as silly as this.

However I will admit it looks like a lot of  fun drive in the mud. Thoughts?

Theme Tuesdays: Race Stance

4

The concept of theme Tuesdays here on Stance Is Everything is simple, every Tuesday I pick a theme and post a collection of vehicles with that theme that meet the stance criteria (modified suspension that suit the vehicles intent). This weeks theme Tuesday topic is: Race Stance

There is a  definite breaking point when it comes to stance and when it becomes more of an aesthetic modification over a purely functional one. I have discussed my thoughts on this before so I won’t go into large detail about it again but I feel that as long as the owner is happy other people shouldn’t get too upset. However I think that we can all agree that these cars  look great and perform just as great.

This Porsche is looking serious on a set of works
e30 m3 touring/dtm cars are works of art
Painted wheels and polished lips are nothing new
Tuckin' front and rear with a super low splitter, gotta love it
I swear if any other car had this color I probably wouldn't like it
These Saab's looked a little funny in street trim but down right mean like this
Imagine someone running that wing on the street? It would be unacceptable, works on the track though
Track flares > Ricer widebody
I like how this class of racing retains little things like the door handles and tri star emblem
I'm not the biggest Ferrari fan but I can't hate on this
Flush, low, fast
I know a few of my readers are Miata owners and will know way more about this one than me
Is it just me or does it look like the one in the rear has a bit of over steer kicking in?
I love the early 90s touring series cars always had nice stance and nice center lock wheels
Volvo touring wagons get nothing but love
No M bumpers or lips here
Another Volvo this one is getting a little loose
Spark it or park it!

Race stance can prove as inspiration for street stance so hopefully some of you wrenching over the winter got some ideas.

Small Scale Stance

2

Being the holidays I’ve been at my moms place the past few days and therefore away from Stance H.Q. I didn’t have much time to be bouncing from forum to forum and blog to blog looking for new content nor did I feel like cluttering up her computer with photos of cars she won’t appreciate. So I made due with what I had (my iphone and creativity) and figured that perhaps some of you might be interested in my latest model car project that’s been hiding in the depths of my moms basement waiting for me to finish. Hopefully this will be the year I actually finish…

My dad got me into building model cars fairly young since he realized it was a great cheap way to keep me out of his hair for hours at a time. As I got more hobbies and my 1:1 cars started to consume my time I started building less and less and slower and slower. Regardless of how much time I might have I still buy kits that catch my eye and store them away for when little bits of time make themselves available.

This 1955 Chevy Nomad is one of those kits. I chose the Nomad because I’ve never built a wagon before and I liked the fact that this one came with nice (but somewhat over scale) wheels and a nice stance. I figured it would be something I could build fairly easily and ad some custom touches along the way, if I recall it was under 10 bucks too so the price was right.

The very first thing I did to the model once I got it out of the box was chop the top, I decided the stock roof-line was a little to mundane for the wheels and ride height of the car and that a slightly lower top would help it all flow better. This is my first chop top so it’s a cool challenge, I eliminated some pillars and scratch built some others, while I was working on the body I decided to get rid of the door handles and emblems as well.

I've still got a lot of sanding left to do but automotive spot putty is working really well
I've still got a lot of sanding left to do but automotive spot putty is working really well
I like the new roof-line, makes it look a little more aggressive

The interior and chassis are getting normal treatment, with nothing over the top just adding detail where I can and how I can. The brake setup was done with red calipers while the rotors got some detailing so the look cross drilled and slotted. The interior is going to be tan with silver accents once complete, and I am also looking into building, or finding a tank and some hose to simulate an air ride set up but we will see if that actually happens.

I had more or less finished the chassis since the last time I worked on it
I had more or less finished the chassis since the last time I worked on it
I used some textured plastic paint I had to simulate undercoating of the floor of the vehicle
I spent a while detailing the motor, caliper, and rotors the next kit I build I want it to have photo etched pieces
I still have to go in with a fine brush and clean up a lot of the edges of the interior but most of the base colors are down
In reality this car probably could not turn
There is a firewall garnish missing hence the gaping hole
While I was workin on the Nomad I brought my s10 and highboy down for some repair after falling off shelves

Once the Nomad is done and the s-10 and 32 Ford are fixed back up I plan to get my Bryce Casselman on and shoot some creative shots of all of my slammed models. I’m back at home now so you can expect more 1:1 scale content tomorrow.

Merry Christmas

Or should I say Happy Holidays? I’ve never been too polictally correct, but I am going to assume that none of my readers are too uptight about which vernacular I use ;). Today’s a day to be spent with family and friends enjoying the spirit of the season so I hope everyone is doing just that. To those of you who have found the time to stop by here today leave a comment and I will send you a free set of S.I.E. url stickers of your choosing. Happy Holidays!
