Then, as is typical with Instagram, I forgot about the build completely until recent photos of the Ranger popped up on my timeline looking unlike most (perhaps all) other minitrucks.
As a kind of war of worlds Larry threw some steels and all terrain tires under the truck and removed the fenders in addition to the previously MIA bed.
A few bent tubes and some welding later and viola the pre runner minitruck is born.
Instagram comments suggest that it isn’t actually just for looks and the truck will be driven fairly spiritedly, the motor swap below suggests the same.
An off Road capable truck that can also lay frame? This might be the best of both worlds.
Boost makes everything better and today’s Theme Tuesday focuses on some of the more unique turbo set-ups I can currently think of. The cars today were selected either because the application was creative, the set-up itself was creative, the turbo was simply massive, or all of the above.
There are still a number of other cars I could have included on this list so don’t be surprised if this theme starts reoccurring.
While perhaps not the craziest set up in this post, this car has always intrigued me just because it is so rare to see the Buick GN motor not in a GNSadly I’m told this car was destroyed somewhat recentlyStraight out of left field is this turbo F20 tracker, not sure what became of it after it showed up on eBayThis car……and this car belong to the same lucky ownerRumors are this is just a show set-up and this car didn’t make boost but I’m doing my best to get to the bottom of it
Perhaps on par with the turbo size above is this RSX out of FloridaTrevor’s vr6t turbo s14 is an obvious inclusion in this post, if you’re not following his updates on Facebook you should beChop Shop isn’t messing around with the latest incarnation of their R32. 1500+ hp is the goalIf I’m not mistaken this boosted LS/VTEC with 760whp and 470lbs of torque is the fastest EF in Canada. It also wins best of class at shows
I completely forgot this was a remote mount twin turbo car until I was pulling this post togetherProbably because in most cases the owner isn’t displaying this photoAll of my exterior photos of this V6 turbo gen sucked but I did manage to get a picture of a picture of the turbo set upZeke Peterson’s 1000hp ‘GTIRS’ r…Bismimoto has brought a number of turbo Porsche’s to SEMA, this one was there in 2011
This one….…and this one were present in 2014
It’s really is a shame that this Heffner twin turbo kit is completely hidden by the bumperRick Dobbertin’s J200 is still one of the craziest FI set-ups I’ve ever seen, you can read more about it hereLittle bit of Australian craziness via SpeedhuntersPlucky little Ghia with a very in your face turbo configuration
In the six years this site has been operating the annual ‘spring’ car show that takes place at Mississauga’s International Center has changed hands, and names, three times. Performance World for many years the show changed to Megaspeed in 2012, and despite the organizers best efforts to match the bar set by PW they bit off more than they could chew.
Never a terrible show mind you, from an organization standpoint it was clear the Megaspeed staff never quite caught their stride. Known for their previous work with the Canadian Motorsports Expo the organization body that took the reins in 2015 employed a less is more approach to the entire event. It was shrunk down in size, and focus was put on showcasing first time shown, and quality cars, rather than simply bringing a cruise night crowd indoors.
The size-to-door price ratio may have been off in some people’s eyes, but in my opinion I’d rather spend more time looking at a few cars versus sifting through mediocrity in order to find something interesting.
Coverage today runs the gamut of sport compacts, modern muscle, custom trucks, and rat rods and gives those of you who skipped 2015’s event an indication of the direction it is headed.
Lead Kings
The Lead Kings sure do make their way around, of the classic car crews in the area I think they cover the most distance.
I’ve seen their cars in Detroit, Scugog, Hamilton, London, and right in my backyard at the International Center.
What’s a sled without a pin-up girl? This Edsel clipped Dodge is one of their more over the top builds, last saw this at the Jalopy Jam UpIf I’m not mistaken most of the Lead Kings cars are true drivers, and this one is spotted in the Hamilton Ontario area on the regular
Bagged, chopped, and some power under the hood (if there were a hood) this Ford is my kind of buildHopefully I’ll get to see this truck a bit more this summer as I’m trying to get out to a few more classic events…Bare Metal 1940 Roadking beside a ’51 Mercury M-300 on an Explorer frame with a ’66 Cougar interior
Tuners
The tuner community at large is a little miffed about the lack of a dedicated hall for tuners this year but personally I appreciate the cars being in a well-lit area not off the beaten path.
I also liked the fact that it wasn’t the normal barrage of noise tuner halls normally are. Too early in the year for that, my ears ain’t ready!
Team Mayzn brought this G out on surprisingly seldom used Concavo wheelsRyan recently picked up a Kaption Audio sponsorship so his car is a lot louder this yearPedro’s A3 is on air this year and I think pretty potent under the hood if I recall…Speaking of potent under the hood this Miata might look familiar to some of you from Truck And Tuner Expo coverage. It now sports an LS swap performed by Ultimate AutosportsThe unique marble paint is retained but a new wing and diffuser have been added to the mix to go with the additional powerOn the topic of power Dynamotorsports brought out a couple of their SuprasThis is north of 1000 hp if I am not mistakenBoost must hit like a monster…To be a fly on the wall of this conversationAnother crazy Dynamotorsports build is this second generation CelicaThe Flares and te37s suit this car perfect, and if you’re wondering why such a wide tire is necessary…… it’s because a 2UZ V8 now sits under the hood. It isn’t quite done yet but should be running this season
Old Dogs Have Their Day
No matter what they choose to call this show the main draw for me is variety and classic wise there was a bit of something for everyone. From prim and proper to driven hard and put away wet.
This ’27 T is Canada’s Oldest Most Original Hot Rod. Other than repairs it has been untouched since 1952, and some of those repairs were done at my friend Keith’s shop which I visited last yearIgnoring the crazy mannequin that just might give you nightmares, this ’37 Packard is pretty rad
Plate reads not so low, but it looks pretty low to me…
These two rat rods were full of detail you only find on these style of builds
Loved this vintage snowmobile, which looked like it could be run
Switching gears entirety from Rat Rods was Jeff Lutz Bel Air which does the quarter-mile in 6.845 at 212.13 MPHTom Bailey brought out his famous Camaro that runs a 6.52 quarterHe also brought out Slick Seconds which was also at Detroit AutoramaThis ’65 Mercury was the first gasser truck I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in person750HP 355 under hood, 5 speed Getrag, 8.8 4:10 gears I really hope I am somewhere in the vicinity when the wheelie bars get used!Tucci Hot Rods ’41 CaddyIt’s a ’41 with a 500hp Northstar engine, those wheels are 1/1 as wellBig Block, Nitrous fed, motorcycle. Aka a death trap
Sprayed Perfection
There were plenty of vehicles with stellar paint jobs at Motorama 2015, but they cars below blew me away. Truly rolling canvases for the painters.
I am 99% certain this is Gene Winfield paint jobBlue on brown is a combination I would have never pegged to work this well
Judging by the guitar pedals and mic shifter I’d wager we are looking at the vehicle of a music artistThe paint on this Mercury is so wild it almost hides a lot of the body work that has been done. Like the roof chop, shaved handles, and Caddy front endLace, windows, sections, flames, striped this paint job literally has every trick in the book
In my opinion the paint job of the entire show as found on this altered wheel base Dodge Comet owned and built by Glen Botting of the East London Timing AssociationAs far as I can tell (not being alive in the time period) this was a proper era correct build, straight axle, ladder frame, the whole nine
I’m told this won best gasser at Motorama a few weeks prior and there’s over 5k worth of material in the paint alone!
Hall One
The main hall of this show is typically the one that contains the most lavish, high dollar, well-rounded builds and this year was really no exception. Unfortunately starting from the exhibitor entrances and working my way forward sI didn’t have a lot of time in this hall.
Thankfully Drake came through and deliver a great selection.
Those of you reading for a while now already know I’m a fan of Elcos and this ’71 was meanA well worked over, and nicely detailed, big block Chevy gets this car truck movingRound the bend from the El Camino was this great looking Cafe RacerDon (who owned this ’50) came back this year with an entirely new build
Underneath the Cali sun styled body this is actually a performance truck with a 556 hp GM 6.1, T56 trans, and 12 Bolt rear end. Impressive build that I’m told will be driven hardWeaver Customs Camaro known as ‘Bad Company’It’s unique look is because it has been shortened 3 1/2 Inches over all while being widened 12″ in the rear and 8″ up frontThe roof has also been raked pretty significantly to achieve the ‘Speedster’ look they were after, visually it is a bit much for me but the work was impressive
Davey Terry’s ’39 International
Davey has been a reader of the site for years now and the last time his truck was at Performance World I somehow completely missed it. This year I made a point to check it out because based on what I had seen him post on instagram it looked really impressive.
In person it didn’t disappoint.
The international cab now sits on a custom frame with a Chevy front axle and Ford 9″ rear
The cab has also been chopped 3″ and channeled 6″
Finally a 305 sits between the rails
Taylor’d Customs
Taylor’d Customs brought three builds to this years show, with the recently finished Beetle and Montbomb being the ones that really caught people’s attention.
Hopefully this year I can get out and take some photos of the Montbomb because it really is an incredible build.
Shooting the beetle is just a given.
The custom widened steelies Blair build for this build fit perfectThat sticker will be avail bile for sale in the store real soon (shameless plug)Ash was a BIG fan of the Beetle, I think I may have a future air-cooled driver on my handsPositioned in the lobby the Montbomb served as the shows greeterHaving not been to the show in a few years I think a few people forgot how crazy of a build it isAttention to detail is everywhere in this car, right down to the name plate on the mirrored door sill
Mike Livia’s ’36 Pickup
Mike Livia’s Ford is a really awesome build that I think everyone is capable of appreciating, no matter what their niche of choice happens to be.
The motor is a flat head topped with Offenhauser heads, and a Offenhauser intakeTriple Stromberg Carbs ice the cake
Copper accenting runs throughout giving it a really classy/sinster look
The Motorama crew has already said they have a laundry list of things they want to improve for next year so hopefully this means bigger and better things for this much-needed show!
Like many mid 80s babies growing up one of my favourite cartoons was X-Men, and the walls of my room were covered in posters of Italian exotics. Of the X-Men characters Wolverine was my favourite of course (closely followed by Night Crawler and Gambit, but never Cyclops), and my preferred Italian car was the Ferrari F40.
For some reason I feel mentioning the two things above segues well into photos of Carguy Japan‘s studded tire equipped F40.
Anyway the Facebook integrated Bing translator made a mess of things, but what I did glean from the text is that Carguy actually ice races the F40, making the studs actually pretty necessary.
Since an off the shelf studded tire solution doesn’t exist the one you see was hand crafted in house.
Sacrilege? Perhaps maybe to some, but a quick browse through their Facebook page revels a love for driving all of their cars in the snow and a fair abundance of money.
No videos of either studded tire exotic in action but considering that exotic rubber isn’t exactly cheap I’m going to assume this all wasn’t just some elaborate hoax.
Supremes (or comparable 5 spokes), thin whites, and a bit of low. If a more dependable solution exists for turning a classic early American barge into a head turner I sure would like to see it.
Wheels Are Everything is one of my favorite site’s because Mark’s love for the above aesthetic just might rival my own.
He recently posted this ’62 Chrysler, which has a face some might say only a mother could love, but now it’s got a style everyone would love.
Be sure to click around on Mark’s site he’s got a lot of gems there.
March might be Theme Tuesday greatest hits month as I’m bringing back the ‘dat ass‘ Theme Tuesday for another go round, thanks to a throwback track I heard on my way home from work.
The last post was three years ago so I guess it is time.
This is a stellar capture by JAG imagingKeeping the Drag theme going here’s a capture from the 2013 CSCS finale……and another from Street Classics in 2014Anyone have more info on this? Really curious what the side profile looks likeWhen I posted this on Facebook a few people suggested the motor would have a real tough time spinning those Good YearsAlbertan’s sure do have some creativity when it comes to their builds20x15s in the back of a ’67 C10While not a full ass shot I couldn’t leave out this c10 from SEMAOr this for that matter…FD gone wide via USDMFREAXLong lost cousins reunited by a love of minimal ground clearanceI hope a LW Challenger makes its way to Toronto someday, otherwise I have to make my way to Cali or Japan to see oneCar Porn Racing providing a little car porn
Same event, two very different vehicles!
In my latest office clean up I seem to have cleansed my list of future Theme Tuesday ideas so throw some at me in the comments.
It only took one trip for Detroit Autorama to obtain permanent residence in my favorite shows of all time list, and calling it one of the best all around events in North America is probably selling it a bit short.
As soon as I knew I wasn’t going to be able to make this awesome event for a second year in a row, I reached out to Jason Langley of Bacon Media / Detroit Style Photography for some coverage.
He came back with a whopping 300+ photos, of which I pulled sixty or so to post today.
Yeah Trucks!
The level in which the trucks at Autorama are built is second to none. Every style from your traditional mini, to re-imagined classics is worth a second or even sometimes third look to capture all the details.
Our friends over at Slam’d Magazine brought out this beautiful white C10 known as ‘Project Snoball’Love the white on white combined with the red interior
I can’t get over how razor straight this truck looks, props to whoever did the body work on thisA suicide door that includes the extended cab third door is something I have never seen before, it’s these types of unique mods that make the trucks at Autorama memorableNot often you see someone put this much polish time into the little 2.2 four cylinder! This truck was owned and built by Michele and Zac Barkley of Madision Heights, MINegative Camber brought out this jaw dropping black beauty
The exterior is great but the interior is especially stand outIf pro touring trucks are more your thing, then Curt Shumaker ’71 C10 should be right up your alley
In addition to being purpose-built truck capable of putting down great numbers, it’s also beautiful to bootWeaver Customs ’62 Ford known as ‘Django’ was a truck I saw pop up quite a bit on my social media feeds
Through the lens of Jason it is not hard to see why
Autorama Extreme
Also known as ‘the basement’ this part of the show would be an awesome stand alone event of its own. Heck some people never leave this area the whole weekend and looking at the rides can you really blame them?
The extreme portion of the show is full of crazy one of a kind builds just like this oneI recently did a Theme Tuesday on liveries, maybe patina’d motifs like this should be up next?Right beside the patina’d c10 above was this equally sun painted 3100In my opinion minibikes > pocketbikesTrio of bikes with incredible paintGround and polish is a lot of work but the end result is usually epicI might have played a little too much Sonic the Hedge Hog growing up as a see Dr Robotnik’s face in here… my personal oddness aside this grill is outstandingThe Motor City Rat Rods, Rusted Crow Distilleries, build was at the show for a second year in a row sporting what looks to be the award it won last year
The Main Attractions
With builds literally as far as they eye can see, and a bit of something for everyone, the main hall is almost overwhelming.
Rows, upon rows, of American IronI really wouldn’t mind taking that motorized skateboard for a rip…Supremes, candy paint, and lake side pipes? Awesome.I was never much for Fairlanes until I saw them hit the groundHard to go wrong with an Impala tucking wheel all aroundThis wood panel ’52 Chevy sits on an Art Morrison chassis and air…and in this photo you’re staring at the LS1 under hood
This Greenwood Turbo Vette is one of only two ’81s ever built. The blow through turbo L-82 set up was good for 450hp and the wheel tire package is IMSA spec
These days it seems the majority of Vegas left have been turned into Pro Street carsThe flake stripe running the length of this supercharged Shelby is a very cool touchThese pace car Mustangs look pretty cool once people get into them a bit
Ken Thwaite’s 73 OUSCI LS powered CamaroAutomotive Repair Equipment Supply Company showing of their lift and Super Challenger
Mark Wisneski’s fresh built pro mod 2015 CamaroTom Bailey debuted “Sick Seconds” at this year’s Autorama, this is a six second Pro Mod destined for drag week (Read: Street ‘legal’)That is a 94mm turbo hanging off the side of a Steve Morris 615-inch big block, there’s a second on the other side, and the power output is in the neighborhood of 4,000 HPThe lone Import of this post is a very impressive s2000Fully stripped yet still built to show car quality
It’s not complete yet but yes that is a turbo J where the F20 used to beI actually saw this ’64 Malibu built by the Roadster Shop at SEMA 2014 but it wasn’t lit up like thisContemporary lighting doesn’t always work on ’60s era cars but they did a good job with this, unique, modern, but doesn’t detract from the cars rootsThe wheels on the ‘Scramjet’ intrigued me so I did a little looking and they are actually 19″ Boyd/Penfound unitsThis almost looks too nice to drive… almostPerfect Mooneyes feel to this build
2014’s Hot Rod of the year as dubbed by Good Guys Nationals
Damn this Charger has a ridiculously awesome engine bayMoney to burn
This Great Eight Finalist Ford was actually Chevy powered
Going to end things here with this both menacing and classy build
Thanks again Jason for the 2015 coverage, hopefully my schedule frees up and I can make it out in 2016 and stop kicking myself in the butt with regret.
I get that drift missiles are a bit of a ‘thing’ right now (to the chagrin of many) but I think even the most carefree of missile pilots would see this car as a little ridiculous.
Aside from the turbo LS swap, which is in god knows what shape, very little on this car appears to be salvageable or mechanically sound.
Alignments make sense. Everyone should get one, but that is where logical sense ends in this collection of photos
Turbo LS: good! Execution: haphazard. The sliced rad support and generous use of zip ties does not really instill confidence in the final product.Curious choice of wire routing is curiousIf you start from the front and work your way back things get progressively more puzzling. I imagine there is quite the story about the rocker panelAfter all that fiberglass work… it still doesn’t tuck rim?
I know I usually say LS in everything but perhaps not in this thing
Spotted in the ‘You’re Doing It Wrong‘ Zilvia thread which totally justifies the ever-increasing price of clean S chassis.
A couple weeks ago Gill from The Scraped Crusaders posted a rendering on Facebook and captioned it “I hope full liveries become a thing in Toronto”.
That comment instantly got the gears going in my head to dedicate a Theme Tuesday to street plated cars that have either slight, or full blown, race car livery.
While I’m not going to predict liveries as a trend for 2015, I wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few cars roll out this year with detailed race motifs.
I’ve always been a fan of this FB, I don’t see it near enoughMagnus Walker’s 277 is a perfect example of a heavily driven, livery covered, street carThe Speedhunters Scion Tuner Challenge car simply screams Trans Am racer at every angleRounding out the SEMA picks is this Tic Tac E36This is a bit of a cheat because this is a competing time attack carBut it is also plated which means it can be included here
It’s actually pretty cool to see the art car vibe carried into today
This car has sadly been wrecked since, but was one of the first cars I saw with some livery on-line, this was inspired by a Dodge truck if I’m not mistakenKanjo racers might be a bit of an opposite cheat as I’m not sure they are technically street legal…Seems like everyone wants a set of Redbull set of wingsRendering to reality with Riverside and Big Brown Industries Ltd the owner is @gxofauckland on igCleary livery is nothing new to the Riverside folksBridgestone livery sweeping the streets of JapanSSR and Tamiya connectClosing the post out is this combo breaker, a Nascar Inspired Ford Falcon in Japan. This car doesn’t look quite like this any more but is still quite awesome
