The Canadian International Auto Show officially concluded on Sunday and as of now all of the vehicles have either returned to their owners, or are on the back of trucks to continue their press tours around the globe.
Today we take one final look at the cars of 2015 before hunkering down and gritting our teeth through the cold weather until the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo.
Picking things up right where we left off with a few of Drake’s photos of the Pagani HuayraA behind the scenes look at this shot, I should pull up my pants.
This car truly is art on wheelsYou can’t appreciate something like the Huayra without hat tipping to the vehicles of the past that paved the way, like this Bugatti Type 37Robert Herjavek’s (Shark Tank) LaFerrari was positioned in the north hall and quite a crowd favourite
Nextmods Varis FR-S was parked in the Scion Canada boothToyota’s Toyota TS030 Hybrid Lemans carAnother look at Nissan’s BladeGlider zero emission concept. Looks like something out of ‘Tron’ in this photo
Ripley’s brought this Peel P50 Micro car in all of it’s electric four horse power glory

It’s considered a ‘Future Generation’ cross over.Saw blade rotors on a Honda/PASMAG collaboration projectLED tails are rapidly taking over from their incandescent predecessors, I for one welcome our new efficient light emitting overlords

A look at the front of the Rip Rod thanks to Mr. NolteA few more shots of the Q-80 Inspiration from part 1, if Infiniti plans on moving anywhere near this direction in the future things look promising!OEM VIP luxury
Jaguar always manages to bring out a few classy sedans to the showJaguar’s new contemporary classic, the limited run, F-Type Project 7
Love these handles!Jaguar states this is the most powerful car they have ever produced, a top speed of 300km/h means plenty of people will see this view if the driver likes the loud pedalA closer look at some of the details on Kia’s GT4 Stinger concept
Kia ought to hop off the fence with this one and release it to the masses, if Hyundai had success with the Genesis I see no reason why this can’t
In an effort to be the home for photos of damn near every outside the box platform or niche lowered vehicle, this week’s Theme Tuesday is dedicated to the Ford Crown Victoria.
With so many Police Interceptors making their way into public hands many of these cars throw back to their service days in styling, but there are a few that buck the trend and go their own route.
Kick things off with this Crown Vic that was built by Ford many moons ago
The Fire Breather under the hoodThe story goes that this car was driven at essentially one event then taken apart soon thereafter when Ford pulled the plug. Anti climactic end to what looked to be a decently performing carInterestingly enough the car above was not the only ‘vic, or in this case its Mercury cousin, on BBS (or maybe BBS styled) wheelsChose this one purely based on the name of the article, the owner even calls it an obese Mustang with a ton of potential in the feature articleOne of only 18 ‘Cobra Vics’, these were originally built for driving schools before ending up in Private hands. More info is hereGrand Marquis drag strip terrorPolice themed lowriders have been around for years so a Crown Vic model is not a huge surpriseNow that I think about it I have never seen this car againThis car came up several times when searching for modified Crown VictoriasApparently it was painted later so it could also be this car, but it also might not be…A non black, white, or blue, example at H2O a few years backKevin Quezada’s Crown Vic which was shared on the Facebook pageNice touch with the antennas on the trunk still, I bet a lot of people would pull over for this oneSpotted at Lone Star Throwdown this weekend by Todd Robinson , tried to find more pics but nothing yet but when I do I will add them here, the rear specs look super wideI think from here down this is all @steelhoover
With Lonestar Throwdown taking place last weekend one might say I’ve had trucks on the brain, and while bouncing around various sites looking for my fill I remembered Mo of the Scraped Crusaders sent by this video of Crogy’s Dodge Ram I meant to share.
Bagged, bodied, blacked out, spike lugs, and tons of sparks. Worth watch.
A friend of mine added me to a somewhat local buy and sell Facebook group that is a virtual endless source of entertainment.
Racing lawnmowers, three wheelers (the banned ones), ancient snowmobiles, clapped out pickups, hodge-podge home-built go karts, and boats that look more suited for land than water are just a few of the things posted there.
While the above may not sound all that unusual, a few very peculiar things also show up there on a regular basis. Like, oh, say a Ford Ranger equipped with tracks and skis.
A regular, somewhat modified, high km ’94 in stock trim this Ranger changes into the perfect vehicle for (and I quote) “driving out to the fish out with all your stuff” when the custom-made skis and tracks are added.
The video below shows the Ranger in action and while it’s not about to break any land speed records –I can’t imagine the 4 cylinder is happy about the added weight– it does seem to work as intended.
Upon returning to work Friday a few somewhat car interested co-workers asked what my favourite car of the entire show was. Being indecisive, and crippled by automotive A.D.D, I couldn’t exactly narrow things down to one but gathering up a few seemed like a novel idea for a post so here we are.
I extended the same question to Chris and Drake to help round this one out.
1912 Stutz Bearcat
Located in the Art and The Automobile display this is one of only three Stutz vehicles I have ever seen in person, and the only one from the companies original run.
A descendant of their 1911 Indy 500 winner this car was touted as a mix of class, luxury and speed back in the 1900s.
These 120″ long cars had a powerful (for the time) 60 horsepower 4 cylinder motorDetails separating the road ready car from the track only version include the lights and fenders
This particular Bearcat was expertly restored, making it quite a treat to look at
Cadillac Cyclone
Chrysler’s Turbine car (posted yesterday) wasn’t the only aircraft influenced vehicle at the 2015 show. While the Chrysler had the turbine power, and the Cyclone only looked like it did, this concept Cadillac was full of other air craft inspired features like proximity sensors and a radar based guidance system.
The exterior boasts nose cones, fins, and afterburner like tail light surrounds, while the interior has a few styling cues from jet cockpits.
This rear view, and instrument view, almost makes the car look as though it were from ‘The Jestons’There’s actually a bubble canopy for this car instead of a top which would further drive home the Jetsons look
After being brought around as a concept for a number of years the car was eventually retired as a demo vehicle, not sure if this is a privately owned vehicle now or still it GMs hands
Pat Cyr’s Scion FR-S
Stepping into present day one car I really wanted to see was the latest rendition of Pat Cyr’s competition FR-S.
Stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up Pat’s car has never looked better, or been more capable.
The Red/Black livery Pat’s car wore last year has been replaced with this Vibrant orange, red, and blackWisefab suspension pieces have been added to the front and push the wheels out far enough to give the car lots of necessary steering angle
His previous sheet metal wing has been replaced with this new version
I wasn’t able to take a look under the hood but a 2JZ lurks under the hood now, replacing the factory FR-S FA20
Lexus RC F GT3
Lexus brought their potentially FIA GT3 bound race car to CIAS for its Canadian debut.
Based on the RC coupe this car was Chris’ favourite vehicle of the show.
While it will probably compete with a bunch of sponsor stickers all over it, I almost hope it runs like this because it just looks so menacing
A modified RC F’s 5.0-litre V8 engine capable of 500+ horsepower will be the power plant for this car
Toyota FT-1
A favourite among the three of us Toyota’s Ft-1 concept has all the makings of next generation poster car, should something even remotely close to it make it into production.
However being a “design study” rumoured to be powered by a golf kart motor I have my doubts.
The F1 inspired front end would certainly stand out on a production vehicle, It would also be absolutely ruined by a license plate
21″ wheels used to seem enormous, now not so much
The Ford GT
The new GT was Ford’s big booth draw for 2015 and, being made here in Ontario this car had a lot of us Canadians talking. Sometimes second generations miss the mark entirely when it comes to retooling but Ford really nailed it with this one.
On paper a lot of people don’t seem to like the missing supercharged V8 but I reckon after a few videos pop up, and lap times, people will start to care much less.
Ford says the car rides on Active suspension which raises and lowers at speed, and for speed bumps.Under that covering lies the “offending” 3.5L twin turbo EcoBoost V6 rated at 600+hp
Ford designers did outstanding work incorporating the aero into the overall design of this car with it looking too “wingy” for lack of a better phraseHowever the Scraped Crusaders mentioned that this looks like the Angry Bird Pig and now it’s all I see when I look at the rear
Pagani Huayra
Last car honours today go to a vehicle that really needs no introduction the Pagani Huayra. Sitting a stone’s throw away from where the Zonda sat a few years prior this car was the highlight of the Autoexotica room, and to some the highlight of the entire show.
As winter begins to get long in the tooth, the Canadian International Autoshow arrives to give enthusiasts of Ontario a bit of reprieve.
This year in addition to being on the ball and applying to media preview day early, Chris Johnston and Drake Nolte were able to join in on the festivities as well. Adding their coverage to the mix really helps make up for the fact that I typically get distracted at this event by gratis food, press kits, and Hot Wheels vending machines.
Collectively we all took a hefty number of photos so the coverage will be broken up into multiple parts, including a special Theme Tuesday tomorrow.
But first, part one!
Art And The Automobile
This year the area of the show previously occupied by Triumphs, Hot Rods, and Richard Petty’s race car was filled with concorus quality classic cars. Sponsored by the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and CBC’ Murdoch Mysteries, this exhibit threw back to the days when cars could almost be considered functional art more than automobiles.
A stark contrast to the cars in the other halls this exhibit was stunning, and rivaled the Auto Exotica exhibit for monetary value per square foot.
936 Delahaye Type 135 Court Teardrop Coupe… 2.5 million dollars worth of carI believe this is a 1929 Auburn Boat Tail SpeedsterI spent quite a bit of time taking photos of this 1912 Stutz Bearcat, a couple more will appear tomorrow
The unmistakable ’36 Cord
This Cadillac Seville tucked tire from the factory, now cars have fistfulls of wheel gap. Where did we go wrong?I really wish this Chrysler Turbine car was parked somewhere with better lighting and better vantage points, positioned where it was I’m not sure people noted the significanceDespite that it was still pretty awesome to see one of these in person, check out the video below if you want to know a little more about this car
Auto Exotica
As always the Auto Exotica section of the show was full of cars that will be forever out of the average person’s price range. There were a few stunning vehicles in this area but the ‘Belle of the Ball’ was the Paganai Huayra, which there will be photos of tomorrow.
While technically across the hall from Auto exotica this Pfaff Tuning McLaren 12C was I couldn’t leave out this Pfaff Tuned McLaren 12-cThe Pfaff logos adjacent to the exhaust were a nice bit of attention to detailWhile still a concept I was told that The Maserati Alfieri will be in production by 2016, relatively unchanged according to the man in the suit standing near byThe detailing between the spokes was pretty cool, keying it to the vents and the calipers was a great touch to tie everything together
OEM’s
Most of the cars at the Canadian International Autoshow actually been debuted at the North American International Autoshow in Detroit but it’s always nice to see the latest and greatest in person.
BMW’s i8 with its unique swing up doorsNaturally being the only motorcycle rider of the three of us, Chris nabbed a shot of one of BMWs two-wheeled offerings
While the Ford both was pretty much dominated by the new GT, this Hot Wheels Rip Rod was pretty coolSublime Green Shaker package Dodge ChallengerI had to take a look at the Hellcat, mighty understated considering the power it makes
The 707hp supercharged heart of the beastIn addition to featuring talking ipads that followed you around on Segways (seriously) Mazda’s booth prominently displayed the new MiataNot a bad-looking little number, and respect is due to Mazda for keeping this marquee aliveI was in the right place at the right time for the Scion press conference where they unveiled the new Scion IMIt looks as though it falls somewhere between a Honda Fit and a Mazda 3 in sizeNissan’s blade glider concept takes bits of the Delta Wing concept to the streetStill pretty early in the concept phase the idea is that it wold be powered by a hub-mounted electric motor on each rear wheelI’m told Kia has been lugging around the GT4 Stinger concept for a few years nowWith no word on if it will enter production the 315-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder coupe just remains a neat idea more than anything elseWould you drive a Kia sports car?The 2016 NSX was one of the biggest debuts of the Canadian event
Twin turbo, electric motors, 9 speed transmission….for those who get a chance to drive this car I bet it will drive unlike anything else. The Infiniti Q80 inspiration, should it be released, would fit into the lane currently occupied by the S- Class and 7 seriesIt’s quite a unique concept, though sedan in length, it’s a 2 door car with suicide doors
The headlights are said to be inspired by the human eye and were, in my opinion, one of the best of the showThe tails were quite beautiful as wellClosing out today’s coverage will be the Mini Supra Leggra conceptDubbed a familiar face with a twist this car is Mini’s modern take on Italian speedsters
The aluminum body is all hand crafted which allows for unique details like thisThe interior is a unique combination of luxury and exposed framework
There’s a lot of very interesting details throughout car such as these really cool union jack tail lights
Going to call it here for part one but there’s much more to come this week, stay tuned!
So I might have to take a late pass on this WTF Friday subject since this is actually the second iteration of this particular van, and here I am writing about it for the first time.
The last time Previa’s graced this site they were more of the hard park and show variety but The Tofu Drift Van isn’t meant to look good sitting still, it’s meant to shred tires around the track.
Version one of this van used the factory rear end, but after that proved inadequate the owner/builder basically removed the entire back half of the van and replaced it with readily available s14 parts, and s13 coil overs.
He also added a cage during the process since, well, now a lot of the floor is gone.
The result of all the owner’s hard work is the sheer awesomeness showcased below:
Hungry for more power the next upgrade will be to put a Subaru flat six in the van because at this point why not make this build further unique? (Also he has a lot of real world weight distribution reasons why this is the best choice).
Over the course of it’s stay in the shop for a custom wide-body conversion my standard reply to any updates he shared was “Yeah Right!”.
This became a bit of a running joke, but now the joke is on me as the car is now painted and looks fantastic. The colour his hard to tell from these photos but from the others I’ve seen it looks quite captivating. I’m also told photos don’t really do it justice so I guess I will just have to wait until I see it in person.
There’s still quite a bit he’s looking to have done before he calls it “finished” but so far the début date is set for this years Fitted Lifestyle event.
For someone who talks about suspension as much as I do its surprising this Theme Tuesday idea took so long to become reality.
Coil springs, leaf springs, I beams, and torsion bars give way to push rods, cantilevers, hydraulic cylinders and air springs for today’s post that should be a favourite among the fabricators and engineers reading.
I saw this super intriguing juice setup at H2oi but only ever managed to catch up with the car at night, thankfully Chris Walsh had this photo of the set up
The range of motion here is quite impressiveThis truck is a local submission, and one of only two local juiced trucks I know ofI know this car is from SEMA 2011 but I don’t know anything else about itDoes it ring a bell to any of you reading? This might be the only cantilever EK I’ve seen but it’s by no means the only CivicThe Weirtech turbo F20 CRX also has a very unique rear suspension in addition to this awesome power plant and FR conversionThe falling rate suspension was designed and built by Weirtech around QA-1 coilsread more about the car hereI was lucky enough to see the “World’s most advance hot rod” at Megaspeed in 2013, which uses an “in wheel” Multimatic suspensionI’ve certainly never seen another set up quite like it and the video below describes it’s advantages
That same year Hitman Hot Rods showcased a frame built by my friend Matt Moran during his time there
It uses a hybrid air hydraulic set-up where to of the bags found in the rear push fluid up to the hydraulic pistons up frontA similar configuration is also used in this truck, which was built by 519 Kustomz where Matt now worksI have no info on this but it looks pretty damn interesting. Love the combination of inboard brakes and unique suspension set-up. Not sure where shocks fit into the picture thoughIt looks like the car actually lays body above 0 psi which means you can probably ride quite low…When I posted this truck on the Facebook there was lots of debate about how it worked. The going theory currently is that the upper bags provide some sort of constant spring tension. Perhaps simulating a shock? What you’re looking at here is a Subaru transmission, Audi A8 suspension arms, a Toyota motor, and a turbo for good measureMuch much more info on this Mazda can be found here on youtube and here on facebookClosing out this post with the picture that really inspired the whole thing. This ornate, unique, Mazda is being built by @wickedwedlcustomshop, and is straight up bananas
