Dark Shadow: Gary Donker’s ’95 Ranger

1

Being one of the most well-known Rangers to come out of Ontario Gary’s truck really needs no introduction. It’s appeared here in event coverage several times over, and been featured by a few other noteworthy media outlets.

About a week ago Rob Anzit, of Basic Builds, got some one-on-one time with the truck and produced the photos posted today.

bagged-bodied-2005-ford-ranger-basic-build-11

Though it may be hard to believe looking at this truck completed, originally Gary didn’t plan to take his Ranger to the level you see today.

At CSCS a few years ago he mentioned that the truck was purchased “finished” as something to drive while he worked on a different project.

bagged-bodied-2005-ford-ranger-basic-build-1

But, like most of us once he started making changes the desire to keep going took over and one thing led into another, which led into yet another, until he ended up with the truck he has today.

That truck is of course a bagged, bodied, suicide door equipped beauty.

bagged-bodied-2005-ford-ranger-basic-build-12

Underneath the face lifted 2011 body work sits a Ford Racing engine that in addition to generating mean burn outs sends this truck down the quarter-mile in and around 14 seconds.

bagged-bodied-2005-ford-ranger-basic-build-9

Under the motor sits an s10 front clip mated to a custom chassis that is capped off with a very unique, and very custom 3 link.

The deep, immaculately maintained black paint is contrasted by billet Intro Vista 22×8 and 22×10 wheels and a custom red interior.

The interior features a smoothed dash, a billet wheel, Classic Instruments gauges and the prerequisite ample stereo.

Theme Tuesdays: Paint Ain’t Dead Pt. 1

2

The popularity of rubberzied coating (aka plastidip) and vinyl wraps has given birth to the widely used hash tag #paintisdead. While I don’t take as much offence to this hash-tag as some others I will say that I truly to disagree.

Vinyl and dip are fine, and often do look good, but paint isn’t dead. To prove this here are some of the best paint jobs I’ve seen in person and found on-line.

Event Coverage: Canibeat’s First Class Fitment 2015

2

Founded in 2010 Canibeat’s First Class Fitment has become of the most highly anticipated shows among the aggressive fitment community. Some events use “Quality over quantity” as almost a cliché excuse for a small turnout, at a small venue, but at First Class Fitment quality is indeed priority number one.

Weeks leading up to the event social media is flooded with the #fcfprep hash tag as people ready their cars for the show after making it past the stringent acceptance processes.

FCF15-6487 FCF15-6481 FCF15-6650FCF15-6466

While the show car field is limited, and curated, First Class Fitment is by no means a small show.

FCF15-atmopshere-2 (2) FCF15-fcf-shirt-logo FCF15-atmopshere-1

Looking at the aerial shot above you have to wonder if that many people made it in, how many people applied in total?

I by no means to I envy those who are tasked with whittling down the field.

FCF15-6829

Even the parking lot surrounding the show could be considered an event in and of itself.

FCF15-6400 FCF15-6301 FCF15-6370 FCF15-6497

The journey to FCF is a bit of a haul for Greater Toronto Area residents but those who have gone once typically return year after year and Michael Branco of MB Fotografi –aka the man behind the lens of today’s post– is one such example. He has been going to the show the last few years without fail.

He wasn’t the only Canadian in attendance fellow Canadians from Quebec joined along with Stance Is Everything familiar faces Mathew Barrada and Steve Luangpakdy.

FCF15-low-level-subaruFCF15-canada-2FCF15-canada-3

The crew from StillSteezy.com also ventured forth along with the Fitted Lifestyle staff and local Ruckus shop Mini Moto Lab.

FCF15-mini-moto-lab-2FCF15-mini-moto-lab-1

Not being there myself, during the weekend of October 17th I found myself creeping the #fcf2015 hashtag throughout the day and I was seriously impressed by a number of builds at the show.

Especially those that were less than common platforms, luckily Mike has an eye for those as well.

FCF15-honda-accord

Like any other event the last few years FCF was full of widebody equipped cars in several different flavors.

Some with off the shelf kits and others with custom one-off renditions.

FCF15-6881FCF15-6806FCF15-6710FCF15-6539

This BMW had to be one of the widest and wildest at the show. I highly suspect barrels as lips here!

FCF15-6503FCF15-6479

Those who like their camber in excess need not look far at FCF because there was camber in abundance.

FCF15-lexus-is300 FCF15-frs-1FCF15-frs-2

While this look isn’t for everyone, there’s something to be said for those dedicated enough to pull it off. Also I feel that it looks infinitely better when the front and rear camber match and the camber flows with the body lines.

The RX-8 on VIP Modular wheels below is a great example of what I’m talking about.

FCF15-rx-8-vip-modular-1 FCF15-rx-8-vip-modular-2 FCF15-rx-8-vip-modular-3

For wheel aficionados FCF was the place to be. Classic and refinished or brand spankin’ new there were plenty of high quality wheels at the show, often sitting in front of equal quality big brake kits.

Despite the cold weather a few models (or at least one model) braved the cold and swirling winds throughout the air field.

The European crowd was very well represented at FCF, first with a variety of Porsche models both new and old.

As well as a BMW offerings too.

FCF15-6791

And of course their were plenty of cars bearing the four Audi rings or Volkswagen badge.

FCF15-6675FCF15-6293FCF15-7106FCF15-6775

The Audi TT below particularly caught my eye in Mike’s photos, the exterior is fairly simply executed, slammed on gorgeous BBS RS wheels.

FCF15-6667

The interor was also stand out with the unique green leather, wood grain nardi, and dialed air management set-up.

FCF15-6666FCF15-6661

My personal favorite euro of the show however had to be the Sinisbuilt MKI Rabbit.

FCF15-sinis-built-1

I’ve been following Tom Clark (@Sinisbuilt) for sometime now –his bagged Foxbody Mustang Pacecar is one of favorite Mustangs of all time– and watching his MKI Rabbit build come together the last year has been a real treat.

Similar to his Mustang the car is incredibly clean bumper to bumper, and has an engine bay you could eat from.

FCF15-sinis-built-3

He also expertly refinished these 15″ Elipson wheels, and made custom center caps for them since his were missing and they are long out of production.

FCF15-sinis-built-2

Switching away from euro cars another one of my favorite builds at the show, and one extremely popular non social media, was Matt Begley (@__SQUUAAD__)’s turbo LSX C10.

FCF15-squad-2

This truck doesn’t just look good, it makes over 1000 horsepower and works very, very well.

While I’m going to wind down the text here you can find more of Mike’s First Class Fitment coverage below and on his Facebook page.

Maybe next year I’ll be more kind to my wallet and save some money near the end of the season to make the trip out!

Theme Tuesdays: Uncommon Subarus

5

The matte green SVX I posted on Facebook (and below) as a teaser for upcoming coverage from Canibeat’s First Class Fitment lit the torch for this week’s Theme Tuesday that sent me to all corners of the internet.

This week’s post isn’t as deep as some, but hopefully the obscure variety of Subarus in this post that are not that are not Legacys, Outbacks, or Imprezas makes up for it.

WTF Friday: Triked Out

1

Trikes and WTF Friday posts are a match made in heaven, but it’s been quite some time since the last (2JZ powered) trike was posted. Today’s isn’t as creatively powered but it is equally strange.

The Geo Metro shell that serves as the body for this motorized tricycle has been chopped, channelled, shortened and narrowed to make an interesting looking one seater.

trikedout1trikedout6trikedout2

Fabrication wise the work looks to be done fairly well, and powering this little three-wheeler is a 1999 Harley Davidson V twin EV80 motor mated to a Subaru Transmission.

This combination suggests the builder was pretty knowledgeable and perhaps this wasn’t his first time doing such a thing.

trikedout4trikedout3trikedout5

Before the project was abandoned it received a somewhat questionable paint job, but again it appears to be well done.

trikedout7

It’s never been ridden (driven?) because it isn’t quite done but apparently all the parts needed for completion are there. If you’d like to take a stab at completing the project is currently up for sale for $4000 in Redding CA

The People’s Champ: Taylor’d Customs ’59 Beetle

4

It’s been two years since both the last time a Volkswagen Beetle was featured on the Stance Is Everything, and the last time a Taylor’d Customs build was featured, which is far too long for either.

The “People’s Car” is no stranger to the Taylor stable with at least two —and sometimes three— kicking around the shop at any one time. Near constant exposure to bugs is what birthed the idea for this particular car which Blair admits he has been wanting to build for a while.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-sun

This German model was found in Colorado by Blair’s dad and originally the plan was a quick refresh and a mild drop.

However with the car being as clean as it was things snowballed slightly to the point where ‘mild drop’ is perhaps the most inappropriate combination of words that can be used to describe the ride height of this car.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-sun-side

To bring the rust free pan closer to the ground first an adjustable 4″ narrowed beam was installed and set at its lowest position. In the rear new notched spring plates were used, again set to be the lowest possible.

Riding low is nothing new to Blair, but riding low static was a bit of an adjustment and ironically the only place he’s high sided the car is his own driveway.

Since that day air shocks have been installed and a hand pump has come along for the ride just in case.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-rear-bridge-2 stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-side

The unique, pea soup reminiscent color on the car was actually chosen by the previous owner and instead of sanding it down and getting it sprayed something more traditional Blair had the guys at Royalty Auto Spa polish it out to its current luster.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-front-end stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-rear-middle

The first time I saw the car under the shop lights I wasn’t quite sure about the color myself, but Blair always had faith so he had the trunk and hood painted to match before choosing the white and green color palate for the interior.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-interior-2 stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-interior-1 stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-brochure stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-stickers

Along with the fresh Wolfsburg West interior the ’59 received a new headliner and exterior brightwork.

New window seals and highly coveted pop out windows where also added and the car also features working semaphore signals. Rare items that die-hard Beetle fans are sure to be jealous about.

The front bumper was retained but in the rear Blair left the bumper in the shop. The smooth rear end helps emphasize perhaps the major talking point of this build, the rear camber.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-front-road-4stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-rear-road-2

The -9.5 degrees per wheel is necessary to tuck the 8″ wide steel wheels bolted to the back of the car. These wheels are a combination of factory centers and aftermarket hoops welded together by Blair with the help of Stony at Oddball Kustoms.

The front wheels are currently stock width but plans to widen them are set for the not too distant future.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-tree-frame-1 stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-tree-frame-2

With so much rear camber the toe is, as you would expect, quite a bit out of factory spec but with tires being a very moderate $50 a piece Blair isn’t too fussed about tread-ware.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-trunk stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-rear-middle-motor

Besides with the factory 36 horsepower 1100cc motor urging the car along from the rear it isn’t exactly a tire roaster.

Still despite the sub 40 horsepower rating the car is still very drive-able and does manage to get up to and maintain highway speed just fine, it just takes a bit of time to get there.

stance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-vw-capstance-is-everything-taylord-customs-slammed-beetle-motor-34

Though it’s the newest build in the Taylor’d Customs fleet this Beetle has already become quite the favorite.

It’s said that everything is for sale, and the ’57s recent trip overseas proves that, I don’t see this car going anywhere few a few years. Or at least not until a few more of his ideas roll out of the shop…

Theme Tuesdays: Recently Viewed – October

0

I’ve had a bit of a crazy week from last Tuesday to this so I’m going to drop the October recently viewed post while I continue to put out a few fires.

As always this post is a mixed bag of automotive things that are awesome pulled from sources like Facebook Build-Threads, Jalopnik, Just A Car Guy and more.

Enjoy!

A Look Back At The 2015 Canadian Sport Compact Series Season

0

Since 2006 The Canadian Sport Compact Series has served as the entryway to competitive Motorsport for much of Ontario, both in the stands and behind the wheel. My first CSCS event was in 2009 and I’ve been to at least one event a season ever since.

I keep going back year after year because its one of the best combinations of both the show and track that exists in Ontario.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-332015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-282015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-23 cscs-2014-season-finale-skyline 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-37

On top of the cars it’s the people personalities and stories that make CSCS a great event for me personally.

In addition to seeing friends compete for the first time in cars they have been working on for ten years, show for the first time, or run their first drift tandem, I’ve seen blindingly fast race cars of all sorts and yes even a spectacular crash or two.

The CSCS staff, which is comprised of volunteers many of whom I’m lucky enough to call friends, have a dedication to improving the series that is seriously admirable.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-38 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-29 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-43

Is CSCS a perfect event? No, and no event truly is, but the difference between CSCS and other events that have tried to take its place is that the team behind it has years of experience that simply can’t be replaced. Series changes are implemented to better the event itself, not line pockets and increase social media standing.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-41

As judging became more standardized the quality and diversity of show cars went up in kind creating an eclectic mix of off the wall attention grabbers and no bolt left unturned creations.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-302015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-72015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-40

I can’t recall a single CSCS event within the past two years where there hasn’t been a car that Drake or myself have not wanted to pull aside for a detailed photo shoot, and often we do just that to truly capture the unique qualities of the vehicles in attendance.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-4a2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-62015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-52015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-42015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-3a

As improvements are made the spectator attendance numbers have grown both this year and last which has lead to no shortage of awesome cars in both the parking lot and infield.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-2 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-102015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-12015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-9 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-32

At any one of the venues CSCS takes places cars travel at length to be part of the event and quite often there is at least one car at a CSCS event you won’t see at any other event that year.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-40 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-342015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-8 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-39

The show and shine is a relatively small, and much less complex aspect of the series and of late the Motorsport side of things has grown tremendously.

cscs-2015-mosport-cornering 2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-22 cscs-2014-season-finale-weapon-m

The changes to how the track sessions were run started in 2014, and continued into 2015, have led to increased organization and awareness of everyone on the track from flagmen to drivers.

These changes have made the series attractive some of the best drivers in Ontario who regularly break track records at CSCS events.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-17IMG_60312015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-122015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-31

I have not been to a few of the other time attack series in Ontario yet, but I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a wider variety of competitive and exhibition vehicles at other events.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-152015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-162015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-132015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-14

For the 2015 season CSCS also introduced the ‘Max Attack’ event bringing door to door racing to the series for the first time. The reception of this new event has been overwhelmingly positive and one can expect it to return to the series in 2016.

Drifting too has seen improvements which has resulted in quicker paced competition that is more exciting to watch.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-422015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-18

Local Formula Drift Drivers Pat Cyr, Stephen Van Sleuwen and Riley Sexsmith even came by for the last round to put on a show for the CSCS fans and bang doors with some of the rising stars in the local community.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-25

Lets not forget Riley and Steve were both competing in this series last year finishing second and fifth respectively.

2015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-192015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor-212015-canadian-sport-compact-series-yor27

With the final CSCS event of 2015 coming to a close just under a month ago I’m sure the CSCS staff will be gathering together soon to discuss improvements for the next year and hopefully I’m not alone in looking forward to the 2016 season and what’s in store.

It’s a long wait but it will be worth it.

Theme Tuesdays: Toyota Siennas

4

This week’s Theme Tuesday comes via Instagram and @richardkha who’s been tagging me in photos of Toyota Siennas for about three weeks straight now.

As someone who is glad he dodge the van bullet about a year ago I’ve peeked over the fence at what’s going on in the van community on occasion but never really given it a hard look because quite frankly I’m not ready.

My own personal attachment to hatch backs aside it looks like Toyota’s sever seater people mover has a fairly dedicated following of both moms and dads who don’t believe that rolling in family comfort means you can’t roll in style.

Universal Air Supply and Vossen wheels both seem to have a big stake in this market but Work, Air Runner, SSR and Rotiform and more can also be found throughout this thriving community.

white-sienna
One of the things that impressed me most about Siennas is how comfortably they can tuck ample width wheels
sienna-6
There’s decent lip front and rear on these AME Shallen WX wheels and there seems to be 0 camber all around and moderate fender pull
sienna-8
It’s hard to eyeball based on one photo but I’d say those wheels are at least 9.5″ wide
sienna-2
Swallowing Rotiform SNA wheels seems to be no problem either
sienna-7
These look like Work Brombacher wheels which are near identical to the wheels on the opening van aside from some small details that currently slip my mind
sienna-3
Being one of the more affordable 20+ inch options on the market today it only makes sense Vossen wheels are popular among this crowd
sienna-5
That’s not a knock either Vossens look pretty good underneath these vans
sienna-1
SSRs also look pretty good here, as spotted on this one spotted by Joey of The Chronicles
sienna-12
Van + roof box + bags = the ultimate road tripper?
sienna-2
Great shot, stance, and wheel face colour choice here
sienna-10
I feel like niche car communities thrive in Hawaii for whatever reason
sienna-9
End things out with a bit of function and form. A HKS supercharged Sienna. Apparently the SC is good for about 70 WHP

More modified Sienna’s and modified Vans in general can be found by following Van Kulture on both Instagram and Facebook.

I sense a 70s Van post in the not to distant future….

It’s The Wood That Makes It Good

Wood can, and has been used for a great many things but recently its use in the automotive world has been relegated to things like speaker enclosures, and interior trim.

Previously fallen trees were used for a wider variety of components, but with the materials like alloys and composites being easier to work with today wood doesn’t make up much of the modern automobile.

Don’t tell that to the builder of this car out in Quebec however who constructed most of his unique, super car like, vehicle out of what looks to be small blocks of wood.

Spotted by Quebec native Gabriel Chamberland next to nothing about this vehicle is revealed except that it was produced by one man after roughly two years of work.

Like the exterior, the interior is largely made up of small wooden “bricks” and the gauge cluster is a simple android tablet.

I dug as much as I could but kept winding up back in the same spot so I can’t tell you what chassis this car employs nor can I  provide information about the motor aside from the obvious supercharger.

I don’t imagine a car like this can remain a secret forever so hopefully someone in the area can spread light on this unique build soon.
