WTF Friday: LS Swap…You’re Doing It Wrong?

4

Today LS swapped S-chassis are pretty common. Some might say all too common. The typical recipe is to grab a 4.8 or 5.3 from a truck, remove truck components, replace them with car accessories, wire it up and Bob’s your uncle.

This San Diego resident decided that was too straight forward and went about things a much more difficult way by selecting a 2007 Monte Carlo SS as his donor.

rear-engine-ls-s-chassis-1

The SS of that year uses a 5.3 LS4 in a transaxle configuration meaning that the easiest way to get the motor in the car was to put it in the back.

rear-engine-ls-s-chassis-2

rear-engine-ls-s-chassis-5

Though the idea isn’t a bad one, and the owner claims it runs excellent, the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired and quite frankly I’m not sure it yields the $6000 asking price.

Never the less should you be interested in a rear engine LS project this is still sitting on the San Diego Craiglist.

Theme Tuesdays: Instagram Builds You Should Be Following

0

When this site started Instagram didn’t exist and being an old fart (in internet years) it took me awhile to jump from twitter to Instagram.

Now that I’m a regular user I must admit that it does making keeping track of a lot of things fairly easy and efficient. It has also, much to my surprise, become a place where I keep track of or learn about quite a few builds.

Sure there are a lot of terrible “for the ‘gram” builds there but once you weed through those there are a number of really cool cars and trucks being built.

Today I’ve rounded up just shy of ten, and in the odd case that the build exists outside of Instagram I’ve linked to it as well.

@PLYMOUTHAIR_RADIALTRUCK

I mentioned this build before in a WTF Friday post but they have really been moving on it lately so I felt I should post it again.

While completing the motor swap alone would be a feat Colorado Auto & Parts is going all out with build addressing and updating nearly every component of the vehicle.

The motor has fired a few times both in and out of the truck, and they are pushing hard to get it up to snuff to make the project drivable.

If you’re wondering the vision for the end product, it’s something like this

I have a sneaking suspicion they might be pulling this one together for SEMA but I wasn’t able to find confirmation at a quick glance.

@R’S Garage

This build was really popular the tail end of last year and I can’t remember if it was Instagram or Facebook where I spotted it first. 2JZ big turbo Subaru wagon is hard to argue with and doesn’t really need much selling.

But that paint and those wheels and yet to be built flares/widebody should be enough to grab you interest should the engine not.

The build seems to have made the hop over to Facebook recently so you can catch up on the most recent progress there, it was also feature on Speedhunters not so long ago.

@GOOMBAJAMES

This build came to my attention after the owner/builder stole the show at Wekfest a few months back.

Working from a render created by Aaron Beck James Schwartz has built a truly one of a kind, F20 powered, 1930 Model A five window coupe.

View this post on Instagram

Story time/Throwback to October when I came across a CL add 2 hours south about an original 1930 model A 5 window coupe. No photos just a brief description, now one major challenge with these cars are a lot of older gentlemen own them/ build them that don't really know how to work technology and post photos nor send photos and all they want to communicate through is email. This photo took 2 months to receive but I knew the moment I saw it this was the one. With that being said it took 3 months of slow communication to convince him to part ways with the body as that is all I really needed. Crazy to see where she is now instead of rotting in a backyard. Thanks for all the love on her recently! #modela #TheGreatDepression

A post shared by James Schwartz (@goomba_james) on

Super interesting in both execution and fabrication work, James has been steadily chipping away at the build to get it to a point he deems as “completed”. Recently (well somewhat recently) released a little youtube video of the car.

I imagine once it’s up to his standards more coverage will emerge.

@SRADLEY54

Remember the insanely well-built LS Miata I posted in the Importfest coverage? Well it belongs to Brad Ruiter aka @scradley54. In that coverage I mentioned calling it an LS-Swapped Miata was a bit of an under sell and here’s why.

Yeah, it’s got one of the nicest integrated tube front ends I’ve ever seen complimented by awesome metal work and finish colors. Even if you are not a fan of v8 Miatas you have to admit this car is the real deal.

It’s also not the only cool vehicle he owns, these are his too:

In addition to Instagram there’s also a Club Roadster build thread for the Miata but it looks like most of the images are dead.

@SHAWNHIBMACRONAN

I think I first saw this build on Stanceworks but it was so long ago I can’t really be certain. At any rate Shawn is an outstanding Artist out of California who’s building a “Street Legal Sculpture” in pursuit of love, inertia, and the perfect stance.

His instagram is a mesh of his project Econoline van and art installations and quite honestly one of the more interesting accounts that I follow. Artists tackling builds isn’t something I come across often but the ones I have seen usually turn out pretty awesome because artists have an attention to detail and creativity someone with a purely mechanical mind doesn’t always have.

Take for example his centre console/engage cover

Have you ever seen something quite like it before? Me Either.

More information on the direction of this build and the mindset behind it can be found here Shawn’s website.\

@EVELTWIN

Matt’s work has been featured here pretty much any time fabrication is mentioned ant that is because he’s really, really, good at it.

A post shared by Matt (@eveltwin) on

Similar to Shawn he’s got an artistic side which means that a lot of his work come out looking very aesthetically pleasing as well as 100% functional and useful.

He also dabbles in art now and again, all of which is awesome as well.

But his continued Dodge project is his main focus of late and gets better every time I see it.

@OBES_SEBO

I have to admit when I first saw this build I thought it was a joke. I mean the wheels are so damn wide that I couldn’t believe someone was seriously thinking about fitting them under a car. When I saw they were destined for an e30 I just about put my phone down and walked away.
https://instagram.com/p/3IYhjEIMWB/?taken-by=obes_sebo
https://instagram.com/p/3KXjh8IMY-/?taken-by=obes_sebo
However Sebo Wang seems to be pretty determined to fit the super wide BBS wheels and fit them properly. By properly I mean no universal flares, no gobs of camber, and no tires stretched to an insane degree. Buddha Concept Designs is doing the work the same shop that handled the metal wide body on this Lexus GS, so the car is in good hands.
https://instagram.com/p/3h0B1doMQn/?taken-by=obes_sebo
https://instagram.com/p/6WS4fKIMa9/?taken-by=obes_sebo

Under the hood is a turbo s50 that he says will do for now.
https://instagram.com/p/sD5RwfoMQK/?taken-by=obes_sebo

His Instagram isn’t strictly about the car (gym and significant other photos make up the rest) but as far as I can tell it’s the only place to get consistent updates.

@911DV8

This widebody LS powered 911 is one of the few out-of-town builds on this list that I have actually seen in person.

It was “complete” at SEMA 2014 and like many a SEMA project for sale soon after.

Thankfully (owner might disagree on that one) it didn’t sell it seems like they are wrenching on it again, at least for the sake of LSfest.

Hopefully some video of the car driving turns up after LSfest because idle videos are not enough!

@TROPHYLTD1990

This is actually the build that inspired this entire post. Baker’s “4 Seater Whoop Eater” is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. A Ford LTD (famously called a Ford POS in the movie Men In Black) turned into a trophy truck… err car? Outstanding.

At 64 posts deep this build got really serious real quick. First under the hood.

I don’t often recommended lifted builds but if there’s any I do recommend following it is this one.

I have this real sinking feeling that I’m forgetting a few obvious builds or two so if you have any that you’re following let me know in the comments and I’ll either add them to this post or save them for a follow up.

In the meantime I am going to keep thinking and waiting for that bolt of lighting to hit me that will remind me of some builds I left out.

Event Coverage: The 2015 Jalopy Jam Up

7

This year is the only year I’ve used a calendar to plan out the events I would attend, and one of the first events I marked off was The Jalopy Jam Up.

Last year’s event had perhaps the worst weather of any show I’ve been too and it was still one of the most enjoyable to attend, so this year I had my fingers crossed for the better part of the summer hoping for good weather.

The day of the event the weather forecast was fantastic and the The Jalopy Jam Up, a show that showed worlds of potential in 2014, blew away all expectations in 2015.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-crowd-2

jalopy-jam-up-rod-lineup

jalopy-jam-up-2015-crowd-1

Once again held at the one of a kind Frontier Ghost Town in the City Of Durham the Jam Up played host to not only some of the best traditional Hot Rods from Ontario but a few out of province, and even out of country cars as well.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ford-chevy-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ford-front-end

But the show wasn’t just Hot Rods (even though that could have been enough) there was a large number of era correct kustoms, sleds, and bikes scattered throughout the grounds between the various wooden buildings of the venue.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-red-flames

jalopy-jam-up-maurader-caddy-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-motorcycles

The laid back vibe, and friendly atmosphere of this event mirrored that of the E.L.T.A. Summer Bash the week before and I must admit after attending these events back to back I wondered why I attend any other type of show.

jalopy-jam-up-truck-lineup

Events like these really make you aware of the intangible element that exists in hot rod culture that people worry may be dying.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-rat-rod-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-just-a-rat

However being at the Jam Up you can’t help but feel that Hot Rodding is still very much alive and that each person in attendance is doing everything within their power to ensure that it doesn’t go anywhere.

While I’m glad to be growing up in the era I am I can’t help but look at these cars and think what it must have been like when everything was a lot simpler and to the point.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-whatclearance-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-duces-up-2

jalopy-jam-up-2015-cheiftan-nascar

So many of these cars are rolling, working, time capsules that just accumulate more value and character as time goes by.

jalopy-jam-up-57

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-3

Not all of the builds were original of course, many of them were built recently but done exactly how they were done back then with the era correct charm and detail that makes you take a closer look.

jalopy-jam-up-black jalopy-jam-up-bugs

As I wandered the venue, accompanied by wife and son, I took in as many details as I could collecting inspiration for my project that I hope to one day bring to the show.

Though I must admit it will probably have to part in the area reserved for not so traditional builds.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-2

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-hamb

Picking favourites at an event like this is near impossible but a car I instantly fell in love with was this gold Cadillac. Low on Astro Surpemes with thin whites and a flaked roof? Perfect.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-1

Also perfect was the body work and the paint cleanliness. The inside of the wheel wells, which were bright white, were cleaner than my car is most of the year.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-4

jalopy-jam-up-mercury-2

I still have not seen as many kustoms as I’d like but I’ll argue that it doesn’t really get better than this.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-2

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-5

One car I’m still kicking myself over not taking more photos of was this killer Kustom Mercury seen rolling out below.

jalopy-jam-up-mercury-1

Heavily modified both inside and out I hope I get to see this car again. Not only to take more pictures but also to ask about this statue sitting in the centre console.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-5

Cliff Waller, the new owner of Mother’s Worry–the Hemi Powered 1930 Ford I posted not too long ago– brought it out the Jam Up before hauling it back to his native Texas.

jalopy-jam-up-mothers-worry-2

Beside it was his second Canadian acquisition, a small gravity powered custom-built Hot Rod that my son Ash absolutely loved.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ash-1

As I expanded my loop around the grounds I found myself in the swap meet area of the show where some people no doubt walked away with a few incredible deals.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-norwell-speed-shop

jalopy-jam-up-2015-field-of-dreams

It was there I ran into a few friends as well, My friend Keith of the previously featured Binbrook Speed & Custom shop, who brought out a his 90 inch death trap and project ’26 Ford roadster.

jalopy-jam-up-binbrook-speed-shop-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-binbrook-2

And my friend Jay of Distorted Vision, both old riding buddies who are now well on their way to becoming very well-known hot rod builders in Ontario.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-distorted-vision

The grass was also where I spotted a few builds I’d seen at other venues, Pat’s immaculate ’51 Chevy that I spotted at Vanfest was there.

jalopy-jam-up-chevy-5-window

And Kevin Crowhurst’s (Air Assisted) bagged Ford pick up.

jalopy-jam-up-air-assisted

The owner of this Ford is still elbows deep in his build but with a cab, motor, and suspension it was more than complete enough to bring out and display.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-under-construction

While the show is aimed towards a very specific sub set of car modification builds outside that criteria are not turned away and they too are found in the grass. The car below might take a few more modern approaches but it’s no less impressive than the other cars a the venue.

jalopy-jam-up-wiilys

This ‘catch all’ parking lot is where I came across an extremely unusual, and extremely large, hot rod of sorts.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-war-machine-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-war-machine-2

Andy McJannett and I started at it for a while trying to figure out where the parts came from and at best we could guess that the cab was perhaps from a Chevy C10. Being widened and chopped though who’s to say for sure?

jalopy-jam-up-2015-dodge-power-wagon

Rivalling Frankenstien’s monster in sheer size was the Dodge Power Wagon above, I didn’t give it a thorough once over but I feel like there might a more modern chassis lurking underneath the vintage body.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-51-chevy-bagged

Keeping a keen eye for any Advanced Design trucks to draw inspiration from I took a long glance at this black and red chevy. The two tone isn’t exactly how I’d do it but the ride height and wheel set up is right!

jalopy-jam-up-2015-austin

I also saw the drag prepped Austin that was at the E.L.T.A. summer bash. This angle really emphasizes just how big the rear wheel and tire set up is, I reckon wheelie bars are somewhere on the list of future modifications.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-gasser

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-4

Coming across my second Ford gasser in as many weeks reminded me that I really need to carve out some time to check out an Ontario Nostalgic Drag Racing Event. Apparently watching vintage cars hit up the 1/4 mile is unlike anything else.

jalopy-jam-up-wagon-1

I was glad to see this two tone Meteor wagon from last year make the trip back this year. It’s such a great looking wagon and the kind of thing that would be perfect for some long extended trips around Canada.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-bone-shaker

I also remember the car above from last year, pinstriping and patina like that is hard to forget.

jalopy-jam-up-cut-it-up

The chrome teeth on the sled above have sure swallowed a lot of miles, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it at almost every classic event I’ve ever attended as Lead Kings Canada members are known to get around.

jalopy-jam-up-rollin

As the weather went from hot to scorching I decided to follow one convoy of cars out as another came in for the evening festivities. One things for certain though I’ll be back next year!

WTF Friday: Up And Out

1

You know, with all the extreme camber and insane static drops I see it’s almost kind of refreshing to know that people who lift their vehicles are also not scared of pushing things far and above what most of us see as limits.

Built by Gibson Fabrication the Blazer above sits on 1 ton axles front and rear a 4 link rear suspension and huge springs all around.

The truck didn’t actually always look so outlandish, with the previous wheel and tire set-up fitted it actually looks more akin to your standard mudder.

My only guess for why the new wheels, tires, and probably ungodly large spacers is shock value.

Wonder how it corners…

Event Coverage: Importfest 2015

3

Fifteen years is a long time for anything, and for Importfest to have existed for more than half the lifetime of many of its spectators really says something about the organization as a whole.

For their 2015 show Importfest pulled out all the stops and opened up halls A, B, and C of the Metro Toronto Convention centre resulting in a massive 180,000 square feet of show floor filled with Canada’s Biggest and Baddest show cars.

SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) sent me to cover the event this year and when I showed up on set-up night to prep my car, arrange the SIE booth, and snap a few photos I began to get a sense that this show would be different from the years prior.

The calibre of cars rolling in late afternoon were already a step above last years already high standard.

importfest-2015-nv-auto-subaru-2

importfest-2015-nv-auto-subaru-1

importfest-2015-workshop12-batmobile-1

A 2JZ powered Formula Drift spec Subaru from NV Auto, a Tim Burton Batmobile from Workshop 12, and revamped (or completely new) Importfes brand demo cars were just a few of the noteworthy vehicles I saw on Friday.

importfest-2015-mellow-yellow-z

importfest-2015-lexus-rc-350-side

importfest-2015-lexus-rc-350-rear

Since set up night allows a rare opportunity to take photos while there is next to no one around I didn’t waste it and quickly hustled over to see what Dynamotorsports had to offer because I knew that they would draw quite a crowd the next day.

importfest-2015-dynamotorsports-2

This Supra makes 1400 horse power thanks to a GTX4508R turbo set-up and alone it stands fairly impressively.

importfest-2015-dynamotorsports-1

Add that to the numbers that the ae86 (826whp) and GTR (947whp) flanking it put down and you’re looking at a picture of over 3000 horse power.

importfest-2015-dynamotorsports-4

The 2UZ V8 swapped first gen Celica last seen at Motorama was further down the road to completion at Importfest. I believe everything is all there now and this car should be on the streets soon, if not already.

DSC_4442

The Dynamotorsports cars were parked in the Next Level area and that team had a very good showing this year taking home the best over all results crown.

importfest-2015-next-level-bmw-1

My favourite of the cars parked that section of the show was Brad’s fresh out the booth MR-2.

importfest-2015-toyota-mr2-1 importfest-2015-toyota-mr2-2

I don’t think he’s driven much on the car since it has been redone but hopefully he’ll squeeze a few drop top summer days out of it yet.

importfest-2015-toyota-mr2-3

Parked next to the Next Level cars were Street Outlawz who as always have an equally impressive showing of cars and models, the bagged s2000 below sat on K3 Projektz wheels, one of relatively few sets in Ontario.

importfest-2015-honda-s2000-street-outlawz

Steve’s wide-body TL did very well this year’s Importfest taking home “Best Acura TL” and “Best Stance (Air Assisted)”. I know he wanted to debut the car at Importfest a few years ago so it was great to see him the car do so well this year.

importfest-2015-honda-acura-el-2 importfest-2015-honda-acura-el-3

One Honda/Acura I somehow over looked for most of the show until I was brought over to it was this DA Integra.

importfest-2015-acura-integra-k-powered-1

The K swapped, tucked, shaved bay is really impressive but perhaps more impressive is the interior. A s2000 gauge cluster has been integrated into the factory dash and the transmission is now sequential.

importfest-2015-acura-integra-k-powered-2

Bryan’s previously featured FR-S is now on air and those step lipped BBS RS wheels look great tucked up in the wrapped Rocket Bunny fenders.

importfest-2015-rocket-bunny-frs-bagged

Sic Ryde had a few cars at the show but it was this Porsche that I had to take a photo of. It’s actually sitting on wheels originally spec’d for a much wider model, but he made it work.

importfest-2015-sic-ryde

The Batmobile mentioned in the introduction came from Workshop 12 which is a business founded by friend Tim Neil. They are working on a product called Braniac that will control most, if not all, electronic features in your car.

importfest-2015-workshop-12-batmobile

Rotary fans enthusiasts need not fret because Mazdas spinning triangle was well represented at Importfest this year. The red stock RHD FD above was stunning in its simplicity.

importfest-2015-importfest-rx7-1

Navin’s Rocket Bunny Equipped FD got priority red carpet parking and now that it is ‘completed’ I can say I prefer this year’s look to last.

importfest-2015-importfest-rx7-2

Presenting sponsor Vossen Wheels had a great showing this year. Pfaff’s Audi Q5,and Importfest’s own Liberty Walk G37 wore wheels from their cast line while the Lexus RC and RCF had wheels from their forged line.

Pulling together the Stance Is Everything booth this year was a little harder than usual due to a few last-minute drop-outs but I’ve got to thank Blair, Richard, and Matt for parking their cars under the site’s flag for the day.

importfest-2015-sie-blair-1

importfest-2015-sie-blair-2

Naturally Blair brought the classic, and Rich brought his teak brown (phenomenal colour) Audi A4 fit with Airrex suspension and Concavo Wheels.

importfest-2015-sie-rich-audi-1

Matt’s s14 is no stranger to event coverage or features around here and it was quite the hit of the booth. Super clean at all times I think people sometimes take for granted how big the wheels are on this car because he pulled it off so well.

importfest-2015-sie-matt-1

Finally I cleaned up the speed and brought it by the show to represent for 3D Products Canada and the site.

importfest-2015-sie-dave

If you’ve read this week’s Theme Tuesday then you already know Nextmod had an extremely large portion of the show floor this year.

importfest-2015-nextmod-lineup-1

Most of them were posted yesterday but one vehicle I held back from that post was Nextmod Mississauga’s Toyota Supra.

importfest-2015-nextmod-mississauga-supra-1

Completely deserving of this year’s best of show award this car is a perfect example of how it is possible to build a car that can do extremely well at shows and not look like a rolling circus.

I however used this opportunity to take photos of a build that was surrounded pretty much all day, Brad Ruiter’s LS swapped Miata.

importfest-2015-ls-miata-4

importfest-2015-ls-miata-3

Calling it “LS-swapped” doesn’t really do it justice because there’s obviously a lot more here than just a motor swap.

importfest-2015-ls-miata-1

Firewall forward to rad support entirely new and hand fabricated while firewall back nothing but the best has been used throughout.

importfest-2015-ls-miata-2

I could, and more or less did, drool over this car for hours and still miss a whole pile of details Brad has managed to put in this Miata.

importfest-2015-ls-miata-scradley-8

If this is the calibre of build that Importfest is trending towards this show has a really bright future and I’m already looking forward to 2016!

Be sure to keep following on Facebook and Instagram for more photos from this years show as their was simply too much for one post! Thanks once again to SYLVANIYA zXe and Canadian Tire for presenting this post.

Theme Tuesdays: Nextmod At Importfest 2015

0

Going through the 2015 Importfest coverage (coming soon) it became clear that I wouldn’t be able to really capture the number and quality of cars Nextmod brought to the show within a standard event coverage post.

So I decided to break out most of the Nextmod cars into this week’s Theme Tuesday.

This post represents a fraction of the cars NM brought out but should give you a really good idea why they have won best team several years in a row. Congrats to Peter and staff for taking a successful GTA brand and making it truly known world-wide.

Event Coverage: Fitted Ontario Place 2015

0

Fitted Lifestyle has been on quite a run since their first incarnation as Stretch & Poke. Growing from a small parking lot meet, to a bigger parking lot meet, then switching gears to an approval based show and growing further still they’ve got a serious head of steam behind their series of events.

For 2015 they sent the bar to the sky and hosted a show at their largest venue yet, Ontario Place.

Located minutes from down town, and backed by the famous Toronto cityscape, Ontario Place is a unique venue and one that Fitted can lay claim to occupying first for a car show.

This Fitted stop had all the bonus attractions (food, music, vendors and r/c car drifting) of their usual venues with the addition of a giant main stage that featured a live dj.

While I was about two hours north of the venue covering the Jalopy Jam Up (coverage next week) Drake Nolte was at Fitted for as long as he could bear the heat and came back with a great set of photos.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-vw-rotiform-hot-1

fitted-ontario-place-2015-hot

To start thing’s off we’ve got perhaps Toronto’s most famous current car, @jdm458‘s Liberty Walk Ferrari 458 Italia.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-458-3

I’ve still yet to actually see this car in person but it is currently one of the most talked about vehicles in the city and one of 3 Liberty Walk 458s in Canada.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-458-4

Not to be out done  the exotic crowd VIP enthusiasts rolled in numbers to Ontario place. Case in point this VIP Styled Previa.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-previa-1

fitted-ontario-place-2015-previa-2

The Leon Hardiritt Bugel wheels under this van previously belonged to local Liberty VIP member Aidan Borges, and on the topic of Liberty VIP they reminded everyone just how big they do things.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-liberty-vip-4

Those of you familiar with VIP cars no doubt recognize this particular build, but for those of you who might not, this Lexus belongs to “Big” Ty and is one of the most thorough VIP builds in North America.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-liberty-vip-2

From front bumper to back bumper inside and out not one part of this car has been left untouched.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-liberty-vip-5

Mode Parfume front bumper, custom side skirts, diamond stitched red leather interior, custom fourth gen rear bumper graft… the list goes on, and on and all of it is executed tastefully.

Locally Beau was holding things down with his GS which is coming along quite well.

Fender roller and fitment guru Blain –of Righteous Garage— brought out his Y33 that in his typical form swallows insanely wide Bazerias at all four corners.

Since Sic has a pretty extensive fleet of vehicles his Lexus hasn’t been out too much this summer but he brought his well-travelled LS400 to Fitted.

This car is a GTA classic and summer wouldn’t be summer without it popping up here on Stance Is Everything at least once.

I think the last time the car was out it was still twin turbo but now it’s got a big old polished single under the hood as well as new lights front and rear and I’m sure a few more hidden mods I am missing.

With Vagkraft taking place the same weekend as Fitted the VW/Audi turnout seems a little smaller than usual but no less impressive.

It’s also nice to see that the owner of my old Equips has been taking good care of them and putting them to use.

Dare I say they might look better on his car than they did my own?

And of course it wouldn’t be a fitted event without at least one clean e30.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-ruckus-e30-1

If I’m not mistaken the car below was recently sold. Not sure if the new owner has possession yet but if he does he’s done a good job so far of keeping it in one shape.

Personally I think this Surbaru nailed its execution of this popular style.

Though I imagine not all that camber comes out aired up so hopefully he has better luck with the cops on air than he does static.

Jon (below) seems to be loving life back on coils, even though the Toronto roads seem to want to challenge him at every step.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-jon-perm-1

Also continuing to cruise around static is this dumped S4 that I don’t think I’ve seen with a bumper since 2012 or so.

fitted-ontario-place-2015-static-audi-1

Those of you who sway more towards function will probably find the next few vehicles pretty appealing. The s13 in particular is shockingly clean. And the Re Amemiya FC looks like a great work in progress.

Theme Tuesdays: Importfest Favourites

2

With Importfest literally right around the corner –this Saturday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre– I felt it appropriate to run through a few noteworthy builds from the past few years for this week’s Theme Tuesday.

These photos range from 2011 to 2014 and are in no particular order.

Mark Gentile’s EF

The first of two track terrors on this list it was pretty cool to see Canada’s fasted EF on the Importfest show floor. The car even took home a few awards proving that race cars can be show cars while the reverse isn’t always true.

importfest-tt-mark-gentile-ef-4

importfest-tt-mark-gentile-ef-5

Obligatory race car racing video:

Charlies’s Mugen CRX

This car was one of my favourites of the seemingly retired ‘Explicit Contentz’ car club.

First gen CRXs are rare period, but a Mugen kitted one is next level rare, add in a Jackson supercharger and you’ve got one of the coolest cars to ever sit in the far corner at Importfest.

importfest-tt-mugen-crx-1

importfest-tt-mugen-crx-2

Richard’s 280z

I feel this car was under appreciated (well as under appreciated as a magazine featured car can be) when it came to Importfest.

This father and son project came all the way from New Brunswick and wears a MSA Type 3 body kit. Under the hood is a worked over L28 and behind work VS-XX wheels is Willwood big brake set up.

It’s also got a boot full of Alpine Audio too.

Pat’s FR-S

Pat’s FR-S has done the odd shows here and there but this version was the first time I saw it complete after the feature in 2013.

This chassis, and motor set up, has actually been retired for his new one but there’s no denying that a lot of the R&D and seat time in this car directly influenced his current successes.

Wayde’s Cavalier

I know, I know, some of you are probably like a Cavalier what gives? But while most show Cavaliers are hilariously over the top Wayde’s is pretty clean.

It also had a lot of one-off carbon fibre accents, big brakes, an air ride set up and perhaps the only non obnoxious Cavalier kit in existence.

importfest-tt-waders-1

importfest-tt-waders-2

The One and Done’s

All of the cars below I saw at one Importfest event and have never seen nor heard of them again.

First up this turbo J swapped EG sedan from ‘Slammed City’ if memory serves the car was also bagged.

importfest-tt-too_fast_turbo_j

Second we have this flared turbocharged s2000 on Regamasters. Immediately after the show it was on kijii and from there… well who knows.

importfest-tt-slammed-city-s2000-regamasters

importfest-tt-s2000-regamasters-2

Lastly we’ve got Akeem’s V10 s15 project. An ambitious undertaking I don’t think this car has been touched much at all since its showing at Importfest.

Considering how tricky this swap is (there’s only one other as far as I know) you can’t really blame him for taking his time.

Ty’s LS Powered Syclone

In an effort to not have this post be one big promo for the Stance Is Everything booth at Importfest (come by and say hi) I’ve decided to limit myself to one vehicle from booths past and the vehicle I’ve chosen is Ty’s LS swapped Typhoon.

Ty put a ton of work into this truck and was rewarded by a hurt motor on a dyno pull. He’s still got it and it will come out one day but for now it’s back under the knife.

Paul’s LS400

The “showiest” of all of the cars posted today Paul’s GS400 is absolutely wild and has one awards every year.

Apparently the twin turbo, nitrous fed, motor is capable of putting down over 1300hp.

Jermaine’s Y33

Liberty VIP coming to Importfest in 2011 was a pretty big deal and they were given a very prominent spot near the entrance. As a whole Liberty VIP is a very cool group of guys and they stand out car that year was Jermaine’s Y33. I believe this car more or less vanished shortly after this, and by vanished I mean was put into storage.

Still one of my favourite VIP cars to date I hope Jermaine brings this car out again one day soon.

That’s a wrap on my end but feel free to post some of your favourites below.

See you at Importfest Saturday.

Event Coverage: The 2015 E.L.T.A. Summer Bash

6

I’ve been to a lot of events, from elaborate corporate events like SEMA to small intimate BBQs and nearly everything in between I’ve seen my fair share of automotive gatherings. I don’t say this to brag or boast, but rather to give proper weight to the next sentence:

I’ve never been to an event quite like the E.L.T.A. Summer Bash.

Located in London Ontario the Summer Bash isn’t a show, or a meet, it is more of a come one come all party for those who love cars.

2015-elta-summer-bash-atmosphere-1 (2) 2015-elta-summer-bash-atmosphere-2

Historically information about this show has travelled by word of mouth but this year a flyer was circulated on-line advertising that the event ran from 5pm to late.

Clocking in at two hours from my front door I set out early so that I could use the natural summer evening light as much as possible.

2015-elta-summer-bash-porsche-speedster

2015-elta-summer-bash-motor

2015-elta-summer-bash-night-time-ovr-drv

Arriving promptly at 5pm I was greeted to cars and people as far as the eye could see. I was in awe and my head was on a swivel.

2015-elta-summer-bash-dirty-rat-camaro 2015-elta-summer-bash-ford-v8-1

A Camaro here, A Ford hot rod there and wait, what the heck was that, a street legal drag prepared Austin?

2015-elta-summer-bash-austin-dragster-3 2015-elta-summer-bash-austin-dragster-2

As I ventured further down Dundas street I continued to come across car after car I’d never seen at any other event in Ontario.

One car that stopped me dead in my tracks was this ’59 El Camino that I would have assumed drove all the way from California if not for the Ontario license plates.

2015-elta-summer-bash-1959-el-camino-5

2015-elta-summer-bash-1959-el-camino-4

Clearly right up my alley, and absolutely stunning from every angle, I took a lot of photos of this car just in case I never see it again.

2015-elta-summer-bash-1959-el-camino-7

2015-elta-summer-bash-el-camino-3 2015-elta-summer-bash-1959-el-camino-2

As I looked around and took in the variety of vehicles I did manage to spot one familiar car, John Woolley’s Ratso Italiano, which made sense because it is at John’s instance I made it to this show at all.

Greeted by a big smile and firm handshake it was clear John was happy I finally took his word and came to the bash.

2015-elta-summer-bash-ratso-italiano-1

The flabbergasted look on my face must have been obvious because he began to briefly fill me on back story of the E.L.T.A.

Alternatively known as The Disciples of Speed the E.L.T.A. is an East London Ontario drag racing club that dates back to a time when drag racing clubs were called timing associations, hence the name E.L.T.A: East London Timing Association.

Once John introduced me to club President Mark Rogerson the positive vibe of the entire evening began to make a lot of sense.

Mark is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and very genuinely welcomed me to the show and offered to get provide anything I needed during my stay, including an ice-cold beer onthe house.

The friendly humble, kind-hearted nature Mark displayed proved to be a common thread throughout every member of the club.

2015-elta-summer-bash-atmosphere-1

Each E.L.T.A. member was approachable and as new people came and went they were (at minimum) given a handshake and a sincere thank you for attending.

It’s obviously the E.LT.A’s hospitality that keeps people coming back, but one thing that keeps the bash around year after year is a very simple rule.

No goofs.

2015-elta-summer-bash-nash-2

What’s a goof? Well in short a goof is the person who is ruining your favourite local cruise-in, show, and race event with their inappropriate attention seeking actions.

No, goofs are not welcome and any goofs that do make their way in are quickly escorted back out.

2015-elta-summer-bash-night-prowler-1 2015-elta-summer-bash-night-prowler-2

This no goofs rule and laid back mantra creates an almost indescribable atmosphere that can’t really be captured via photograph no matter how hard Drake and I tried.

However what we can capture are the cars and there was literally something for everyone.

2015-elta-summer-bash-1950-dodge-1

In almost impossibly good shape he’s already wasted no time putting it on the ground and dressing up the original six cylinder so that it looks just as cool as the ornate factory interior.

As dusk transitioned to night these vehicles began to roar to life for the ‘cackle-fest’.

A bit of an idle to warm up and then a few blasts of throttle from each car generated quite the crowd, of which I found myself within.

Inside was where I could find president Mark Rogerson’s prize ’55 Chevy 210 Sedan.

2015-elta-summer-bash-mark-rogerson-1

Mark has had this car 35 years and while he’s given it a few updates he’s kept it fairly true to the vision he had when he first purchased it.

2015-elta-summer-bash-mark-rogerson-2

His engine bay is so spotless that I was surprised to learn that he hasn’t had a hood on the car since 1979.

2015-elta-summer-bash-mark-rogerson-3

The car is currently featured over at Canadian Hot Rods and the feature is certainly worth a read.

The E.L.T.A. club house itself is packed with so much memorabilia that I don’t think any number of photos would truly do it justice. It’s arguably one of the largest collections of Ontario hot rod history anywhere.

Perhaps offensive to Mustang purists, this wild horse was a great example of completely outside the box thinking. I’m sure there’s a story behind it’s creation

When I stepped back outside the good times were still rolling and there was a steady stream of people rolling in and out.

Watching people come and go was almost like watching a scene from American Graffiti in the flesh.

Heck I even got to see my first flame thrower in person!

With a long drive ahead of me I regretfully had to leave once the band started turning the volume knob to eleven, but I’ve already made plans to rectify that next year.

Now that I’ve experienced this show once I won’t be missing it again.

WTF Friday: Challenge Accepted.

The FR-S and the Nissan s13 are both chassis that have been modified in almost every way imaginable.

Being the older of the two cars s13 has a bit of a head start on the FR-S in terms of craziness, but the FR-S was so highly anticipated that people went hard out of the gate.

So why not combine the two? Well the obvious answer would be because that’s crazy, but don’t tell that to these folk who have decided to skin a Nissan s13 like a Scion FRS.

Seriously.

How’d they get to the point above? Well they took some measurements, hacked the rear off the s13 and got busy with fiberglass.

Kind of similar to a kit car, this creation actually doesn’t look all that bad and I’m really interested to see how they pull it all together in the end.

No official build thread yet that I’ve been able to find but here’s a Facebook post about it.

If any of you have more info feel free to share and I’ll update this post.
