WTF Friday: Body Dropped W114

2

Cruising the build section of the Stance | Works forums the other day I came across a thread titled ‘Sedes body dropped w114’.

Body drops always intrigue me, and further so when they are cars, so I clicked and found a pretty interesting father son project that goes a little something like this:

Son bought rusty Mercedes Benz w114.

bodydropped1141

He swiftly cut it up and discarded basically everything but the exterior panels.

bodydropped1142

Meanwhile dad was cutting up a second generation s10 binning everything but the chassis, firewall, and floor.

bodydropped1143

Together they did the necessary things to make said chassis touch the floor, ie bags, notch, 4 link and so on.

bodydropped1144

bodydropped1145

bodydropped1146

During this time the s10 chassis dimensions were also altered slightly for what most have you have probably figured out is the next step, putting the Benz body on the s10 frame.

bodydropped1147

Of course getting it to sit like that required a bit more cutting.

image

And putting it all back together required quite a bit more welding.

bodydropped1148

bodydropped1149

For power the motor will be a trusty small block Chevy which I can only imagine will be refreshed significantly given the skill of this father son duo.

bodydropped11410

As of recently the frame was then sent off for painting and the like and the lines were plumbed.

bodydropped11411

The build is still ongoing and you can follow it right here along with me, I’ve seen s10 chassis under a lot of things but this is certainly a first!

Event Coverage: Offset Kings Montreal 2015

3

As you are already aware I used most of my time at the Saint-Eustache Autodrome on track taking photos of all the exciting tire slaying Formula Drift action.

However, when I did make my way off the track I perused Offset Kings, the off track event. Presented by Fatlace –the same brand/person who coined the term HellaFlush– this series of shows goes hand in hand with Formula Drift.

With Quebec passing the Hellaflush Law earlier this year I was wondering what the turn out would be like, but clearly I underestimated the dedication of Quebec enthusiasts to this niche of car modification.

offset-kings-mtl-lineup

offset-kings-mtl-work-vsxx

In most cased they rolled as hard as they could to the show, police be damned, or in the most extreme cases they switched daily driver set-ups, to more extreme show set-ups and back again.

offset-kings-mtl-subaru-transformation-1

offset-kings-mtl-subaru-transformation-2

offset-kings-mtl-subaru-transformation-3

One car that needed no such transformation was this RB26 powered Datsun 280z. Stunning on the way in, stunning at the show, and stunning while leaving.

offset-kings-mtl-datsun-side

offset-kings-mtl-datsun-rear

offset-kings-mtl-datsun

Female enthusiasts were not afraid to represent hard at Offset Kings either. Both the Mazdaspeed 3 and BMW below belong to female enthusiasts and both are fine examples that girls can build extremely clean cars just as well as the boys.

offset-kings-mazda-3-widebody-2

offset-kings-mazda-3-widebody-1

offset-kings-mtl-bmw-1

Flares and wide bodies are still all the rage, and this 993 (with rumoured LS motor) on Airdynamiks suspension caught my eye.

offset-kings-mtl-porsche

If only I managed to see it with the engine cover propped up…

offset-kings-mtl-porsche-2

The Soarer below only employed flares in the rear in order to fit ample width Work VS-XX wheels with appropriately sized rubber.

offset-kings-mtl-work-vsxx-soarer

Not all flares though Michael Sabourin’s VW Jetta showed off the shaved and tucked engine bays the VW community is known well for.

offset-kings-mtl-vw-mk3-motor-1

offset-kings-mtl-vw-mk3-motor-2

And the Volkswagen below showed off a nicely done hardlined air ride set-up.

offset-kings-mtl-trunk

Of course there was also a bit of tongue and cheek humour at the show. The “Ghetto MK3” always turns a few heads with it’s in your face, without a care, choice of modifications.

offset-kings-mtl-fhritp

And a car owner that threw things back to when we were kids playing with toy cars on the best rug ever made.

offset-kings-mtl-car-mat

Going to close out today’s coverage with a look at some of my personal favourite vehicles at Offset Kings Montreal, first up this 1JZ swapped e36.

offset-kings-2jz-e36-1

The swap looked pretty well done and all signs point to it being a car that gets slid so if there’s video of this car out there feel free to drop it in the comments.

offset-kings-2jz-e36-2

Keeping it BMW the e46 below was simple, clean and to the point.

offset-kings-mtl-bmw

Cimon Brouillette’s S13 still looks flawless from the last time I saw it at Fitted.

offset-kings-mtl-nissan-s13

And another one of my Fitted favourites made it to the Offest Kings, Alex Lachance (@BlackAnvilGarage) not only brought his wagon to the show….

offset-kings-mtl-black-anvil-garage-2

…he also had his girlfriend bring his daily Mazda B2200, which is styled in a manner quite a bit different from other B2200s I’ve seen.

offset-kings-mtl-black-anvil-garage-1

He’s got another B2200 build as well which is going to be a drift truck. You can follow his progress with that here.

offset-kings-mtl-black-anvil-garage-1a

The closer for the coverage though has to be this RB26 powered Nissan Laurel.

offset-kings-mtl-laurel-3

offset-kings-mtl-laurel-2

The first one I’ve seen in person this car was immaculate throughout and would have looked equally at home cruising the streets of Japan as it did sitting on display at Offset Kings.

offset-kings-mtl-laurel-1

That’s it for Offset Things Montreal. Thanks again to SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) for the adventure in the land of poutine!

Theme Tuesdays: Recently Viewed – September

0

It’s that time of the month again where I share a few of my recently watched videos instead of a grouping of cars that fit within a specific Theme.

Kind of a bit of an all around list this time with a slight slant towards drifting (because FD) and remote control cars because they’ve advanced a hell of a lot since the last time I’ve looked.

Event Coverage: Northern Showdown 2015

4

I had such a great time at Northern Showdown in 2014 that attending again in 2015 was an absolute given.

Riding the momentum of their successful inaugural event the organizers started advertising the show early 2015 in order to grow both the competitor and spectator numbers without diminishing the quality of vehicles or the quality of the event.

The increased promotion worked and this years how was much larger in size that last, and at a venue that was 100% geese poop free in addition to having better facilities and food.

northern-showdown-2015-acrophobia-1

northern-showdown-2015-shine-runner-1

northern-showdown-lineup

Unchanged from last year was the judging format and outstanding trophies.
northern-showdown-2015-tropheys-2

northern-showdown-2015-tropheys

No 1-3, just a simple top 50 and 20 best of show awards for things like paint, interior, classic, under construction and the like. Having witnessed trophy drama from other events first hand I must say more shows should move towards this model.

It creates a better atmosphere and honestly brings out higher calibre vehicles.

northern-showdown-2015-vans

Members of the van community came out to support this year bringing some of the same vans that I saw at this year’s Vanfest.

northern-showdown-2015-mud-boss-1

This photo really doesn’t to justice to how big this Dodge is, the ‘Mud Bos’ is no joke and is up there on my list of zombie apocalypse vehicles.

northern-showdown-2015-hitman-1

northern-showdown-2015-hitman-3

northern-showdown-2015-hitman-2

Hitman Hot Rods also supported this years show bringing their trailer, latest truck chassis and beautiful carbon fiber filled, LS powered pro touring ’66 Nova.

northern-showdown-2015-honda-s2000

I wasn’t super happy with the photo I took of this bagged s2000 at Importfest so I was glad to see it at Northern Showdown where the lighting was much easier to work with.

northern-showdown-2015-honda-s2000-2

K3 Projekt is a brand of wheel I considered heavily considering for my car and they look great on this s2000. The red wheel faces work great with the white paint as well.

northern-showdown-2015-2-tone-belair-1

While I’m complimenting colour choices I must say the use of colours here is perfect. The bay matches the roof (and wheel wells!), which matches the white walls, which have an accent colour that matches the paint, flawless.

northern-showdown-2015-100-percent-custom

This custom street rod also employed a great use of a two-tone exterior pallet. I didn’t get a chance to talk to the owner Gray from stillsteezy.com did and apparently this build is about 90% hand fabricated.

northern-showdown-2015-work-in-progress-2

northern-showdown-2015-work-in-progress-1a

There’s never any shortage of fabrication skill at Northern Showdown though, and that is what makes it one of my favourites.

northern-showdown-2015-work-in-progress-1

My apologies for not taking a closer picture but if you look close you should be able to just make out the billet upper and lower control arms.

northern-showdown-2015-two-tone-silverado

While the owner finishes up the green and black C10 he’s got the truck above to cruise around in, which can’t be all that bad.

northern-showdown-2015-weds-kranze-3

The owner of this truck might be onto something with his wheel choice.

northern-showdown-2015-weds-kranze

Weds in truck friendly specs can’t be bank account crippling expensive and look way better than I ever imagined the would on a mini.

northern-showdown-2015-wedding-crasher

Chris Grantham kept his project Dool-Eh at home this year and brought out his faithful 1990 Toyota, a truck I’m pretty sure I saw for the first time back in 2009 or 10.

northern-showdown-2015-hummer-1

northern-showdown-2015-avalance

Other familiar trucks included Jeff’s static Sierra, Craig’s Mazda b2200, Cory’s Colorado, and the 519 Kustomz built bagged and bodied Avalanche/H3 duo.

northern-showdown-2015-international-1

northern-showdown-2015-international-2

Of course Rob’s International rolled its way through as well.

northern-showdown-2015-james-day-1

The Toyota above has been a lengthy project for its owner and Northern Showdown was one of, if not its first, appearance since a massive makeover. Unlike 97% of the trucks at the show this was on hydraulics not air ride.

northern-showdown-2015-pumps

The set up above is in the back of Street Outlawz runner Billy T’s truck which is a former Fallen Fantasies build if memory serves.

northern-showdown-2015-ford-bronco

It’s been at least three years since I’ve seen the Bronco above but I’m pretty sure it is (or was) juiced as well.

northern-showdown-2015-dodge

Matt tells me that he’s put a lot of kilometres on his Dodge this year and considering I’ve seen it at three events in a row I believe it, that trusty straight six is serving him well.

northern-showdown-2015-air-assisted

Air Assisted Kevin also seemingly puts a lot of road miles on his ’52 as I’ve spotted it multiple times this year as well, usually in front of his tent.

northern-showdown-2015-s10-1

northern-showdown-2015-green-black-s10

northern-showdown-2015-gmc-jimmy-1

The square body S truck fan in me really liked the three trucks above. I’m currently on a Blazer ban from the wife so don’t expect me to get back behind the wheel of one any time soon, but luckily there were a few advanced design trucks at Northern Showdown to keep my eyes on the prize.

northern-showdown-2015-advanced-design-2

northern-showdown-2015-advanced-design-1

Matt, the owner of the truck above, recently got his on the road after about a ten-year build and I didn’t get a chance to talk to the owner of the truck below but it’s got a couple of the same styling cues I have in mind for my truck.

northern-showdown-2015-advanced-design-3

northern-showdown-2015-advanced-design-4

This Ranger below was pretty unique, meshing 50s styling with that from the 90s into one truck. F100 meets Ranger, what do you think?

northern-showdown-2015clipped-ranger

Ash Pratt of Ground’d Kustoms brought out the back half of his current project.

northern-showdown-2015-grounded-frame

This chassis, which will also double as an air tank, is destined to go under a 2004 Dodge Dart if you can believe it.

northern-showdown-2015-grounded-frame-2

The completion date for this project is next year’s SEMA and the car will be a two door turbo charged, hemi-powered, vehicle by that point.

northern-showdown-2015-task-force-2

Mike’s truck won best classic at last years show, and this year he changed things up a bit by cleaning things up in the engine bay and installing a beautifully dark stained bed floor.

northern-showdown-2015-task-force-1

He’s actually got the truck up for sale on ebay now as he turns his sights to a new project.

northern-showdown-2015-chevy-suburban

Interestingly enough when Mike left a truck almost the exact opposite of his truck, but no less clean, replaced him.

northern-showdown-2015-thunderbird

Arriving shortly after the ‘Burb was this incredible Thunderbird.

northern-showdown-2015-thunderbird-2

I’d argue as far as Thunderbirds of this generation go it doesn’t get better than this.

northern-showdown-2015-cover-truck-1

Representing from across the border this Envoy had incredible air brush work applied to it.

northern-showdown-2015-cover-truck-2

Looking like it rolled straight off a cover I came to learn on instagram that this truck never sees a trailer, and seemingly never rides too high off the ground. Doin it right!

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-roll-in

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-1-ford-ranger-gary

Like last year this years show also had the perquisite limbo contest and I’m not exactly sure why but the participation numbers of limo contests at truck shows always seems higher.

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-1-hummer

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-1-dodge

Perhaps it’s because most trucks can drive really low without risk of significant damage where as a lot of cars (especially those with aggressive fitment) would be left with a hefty body shop bill if they ever dared roll near or at 0 psi.

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-weddingcrasher

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-s10

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-mazda-2

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-billy

That said this was an equal opportunity limbo contest and a few cars did sneak their way in, including the Miata below which I assume won I because Miatas always win.

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-roll-in

northern-showdown-2015-limbo-1-miata

I’d never seen this particular Miata before so I took a look at when it was sitting still and boosted, flared, and sitting on Work CR-01 wheels it was a well put together build.

northern-showdown-2015-miata-turbo-1

northern-showdown-2015-miata-turbo-3

northern-showdown-2015-miata-turbo-2

The car above was not the only red Miata at the show worth a look, this NB was showing off its turnkey Flyin Miata LS swap.

northern-showdown-2015-flying-miata-ls-miata

Brad’s Miata was further along at Northern showdown than it was at Importfest. The carbon doors were now hung and I got to hear the car run.

northern-showdown-2015-miata-ls-5

northern-showdown-2015-miata-ls-1

Plumbing the brakes and adding a few more aero bits are a few of the items left on the ‘to-do’ list before this car starts going on a few shake down runs.

northern-showdown-2015-miata-ls-4

northern-showdown-2015-miata-ls-2

Behind Brad’s Miata was his dad’s project ’62 c10 that trailered a ’70 c10 behind it.

northern-showdown-2015-x-vette-c10-1

northern-showdown-2015-x-vette-c10-3

Brad’s dad is a noted builder (you can see his other work here) and started this c10 as a daily driver build before it snowballed into bagged, LS powered, project it is today.

Close by the Ruiter family was Phil Cholette’s project “No Mom It Will Stay Stock”. Gifted to him via inheritance he made an agreement many moons ago that the truck wouldn’t be modified, hence the name.

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-1

As you can see that didn’t exactly work out as planned.

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-2

I started following Phil on instagram (@philbuiltdesigns) about a year ago after seeing a picture of his truck with the bed off and noting how wide those American Racing Salt Flat wheels are.

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-3

Wide wheels and wide tires are right up my ally and the heavily modified bed is really well done in person and should look exceptional with a lick of paint.

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-4

The custom work doesn’t end there though. He’s got a metal dash installed in the truck and a supercharged power plant under the hood for good measure.

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-5

northern-showdown-2015-philbuilt-designs-6

Close by Phil’s truck I spotted this 1500 sitting with its hood half propped.

northern-showdown-2015-silverado-cummins-swap-1

Taking the bait I looked inside and there was no Chevy plant insight. Instead a Dodge Cummins diesel lay under the hood.

northern-showdown-2015-silverado-cummins-swap-2

Positioned across from the 1500 was this Ford Ranger that I must admit I didn’t take a close look at initially.

northern-showdown-2015-ford-turbo-ranger-3

But after being told I should go back and really look at it I did and in the bed was a remote mounted rear turbo set up. One of very few I’ve seen in person and the only one I’ve seen on a truck.

northern-showdown-2015-ford-turbo-ranger-2

I’ll end this years coverage with a few more vehicles that represent the variety of this show.

Hats off to the organizers for another great event, and if you’re reading this and didn’t go make a point to attend next year. It’s worth it.

WTF Friday: It’s Royalty

2

Mike McConnell of The Dub Dynasty sent me this e36 a few weeks back and I completely forgot about it until today.

LS powered e36s are nothing new, but this is perhaps the most “no f*cks given” example I’ve ever seen.

royalty3re

Nicknamed the ‘GMW’ this car appears to be a beater/track rat of the highest order powered by a Mad Max-esque looking LS.

royalty1re

It doesn’t look like it would pass tech at any track I know of, but it does seem street legal, so maybe it just intentionally looks haphazard.

royalty2re

At any rate I was able to find the builder on instagram . At the very least he looks to be having fun with it.

Event Coverage: 2015 Formula Drift World Round Quebec

2

It’s been three years since I’ve been to a professional drifting event, so when SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) offered up the opportunity to attend the world round of Formula Drift at Autodrome St-Eustache I jumped at the opportunity.

I still carry a bit of regret about missing last years round, and with this year being a full points event the Formula Drift/Formula Drift Canada organizers pulled out all the stops.

In addition to some of the best drifting in North American on track, off track there was a large vendor alley, an open paddock, a live DJ playing good music, the Offset Kings car show and yes even a person flying around with a jet pack strapped to their back.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-offset-kings-1

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-jet-pack

The off track portion of the event can wait until next week though because today I’m going to cut straight to the chase and showcase the main attraction, the drifting.

For this round 40 drivers showed up from the United States, Asia and Europe to burn rubber along side Canadians under the scorching Quebec sun.

The home-town advantage was huge at this track and the large French-Canadian segment of the crowd was pulling hard for their own. Marc Landerville and Jeff Laflamme, Danny Bernier, and Tommy Boisvert-Bellemare were particular crowd favourites and running hard all day long.

Ontario had a great showing too, Mats Baribeau, and honorary Canadian Bob Patinka were also out slaying tires and banging doors.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-patinka-1

Last but not certainly not least GTA(ish) residents Marin Guilbault, Riley Sexsmith, Steve Van Sleuwen, and Pat Cyr were driving at this round. Pat’s been driving great this year and was recently awarded Canadian Drifter of the Year while Marin, Riley and Steve have been doing great their first year in the series.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-marin-riley-steve-pat

On the international level there were a number of drivers who stood out both in practice and qualifying. Charles NG had very consistent practice and qualifying laps.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-ng-2

The Get Nuts Lab duo of Forrest Wang and Alec Hohnadell lived up to their name and got nuts every time they were on the track. They were two of my favourite drivers to shoot all weekend because every lap there was tons of smoke and lots of angle.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-wang-1

formula-drift-2015-qualifying-hohnadell-2

Dean ‘Karnage’ Kearney also lived up to his moniker absolutely murdering his Viper at every opportunity. I’m pretty sure the rear body work was smashed off and replaced at least three times throughout the weekend.

Also keeping their pit crew busy was Robbie Nishida who, while leading Steve Van Sleuwen in practice, found himself into the wall quite hard. His team managed to get him back out though like nothing had ever happened.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-robbie-nishida-damage-2

The out-of-town crowd favourite, and the one many pegged to win before the event even started, was Fredric Aasbø. Watching him drive it’s really no surprise he’s sitting atop the Formula Drift points standings.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-asbo-2

When the dust settled Sunday and everyone returned for the top 32 on Monday most of Ontario had made it through, and in the first of the Ontario battles Mats Baribeau squared off against Francis Doyon.

Mats won that tandem but was defeated shortly after by Charles NG.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-finals-baribeau-ng-1

Steve drove as hard as he could against Marc Landerville but was eventually beaten by the veteran. Still he can’t be disappointed in what has been a great rookie year.

Landerville went up against Bob Patinka, and then eventually met Tom Boisvert-Bellemarre who retired him for the day.

Riley and Pat squared off in the battle of orange and it was Pat who took the win over his fellow Ontario resident.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-finals-riley-pat-1

Dean Kearney and Kevin Morin went against each other in a battle that went three rounds, in what could be considered a controversial decision Kearney moved on.

Jeff LaFlamme and Miro Ovcharik faced off after Miro beat Alec Hohnadell and Jeff beat Eric Belanger respectively.

Jeff’s car wore its damage from that battle but he wasn’t alone. As the field whittled themselves down contact became higher and higher as drivers pushed hard to make the top 16.

Picking up the pieces and placing them in the makeshift in-field graveyard were the Formula Drift staff who happily hustled despite the heat.

When the tire smoke and fibreglass debris settled the top 16 drivers were announced as follows: Fredric Aasbø, Alex Grosselin, Chales NG, Mats Baribeau, Matt Field, Jonathan Guitard, Odi Bakhis, Forrest Wang on the left side and Jeff Laflamme, Miro Ovcharik, Marc Landerville, Bob Patinka, Pat Cyr, Dean Kearney, Robbie Nishida, and Tommy Bellmare.

After a short driver introduction (which was a media frenzy hence the few photos), the national anthem, and another visit from Mr. Jet-pack finals were under way.

Pat faced off against Dean Kearney and while Pat absolutely killed it his clutch cried ‘uncle’ allowing Kearney to move on.

In one of the most exciting battles of the day Tommy Boisvert-Bellemare went up against Robbie Nishida. While following Boisvert-Bellemare Nishida spun which evoked a very loud cheer from the St-Eustache Autodrome crowd.

Tommy then went on to face and beat Kearney (again much to the crowd’s delight) on his way to the final battle.

On the other side of the bracket Fredric Aasbø had been slaying all comers leading to a quick, yet exciting final battle with Tommy Boisvert-Bellemare.

formula-drift-2015-finals-asbo-2 2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-finals-asbo-tom-tom-1

In the end Fredrick wound up in the #1 spot followed by Tommy in 2nd and Matt in 3rd.

With the event over and the crowd at the podium I took a moment to take a solitary photo of the hard-working vehicles of the day before heading back to the hotel for some much welcomed air conditioning.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-winners-2

A great event all around you can bet I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure there isn’t a three-year gap between this and my next professional drift event.

Thanks once again SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) for the opportunity and all the support this year with Stance Is Everything!

WTF Friday: LS Swap…You’re Doing It Wrong?

Today LS swapped S-chassis are pretty common. Some might say all too common. The typical recipe is to grab a 4.8 or 5.3 from a truck, remove truck components, replace them with car accessories, wire it up and Bob’s your uncle.

This San Diego resident decided that was too straight forward and went about things a much more difficult way by selecting a 2007 Monte Carlo SS as his donor.

rear-engine-ls-s-chassis-1

The SS of that year uses a 5.3 LS4 in a transaxle configuration meaning that the easiest way to get the motor in the car was to put it in the back.

rear-engine-ls-s-chassis-2

Though the idea isn’t a bad one, and the owner claims it runs excellent, the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired and quite frankly I’m not sure it yields the $6000 asking price.

Never the less should you be interested in a rear engine LS project this is still sitting on the San Diego Craiglist.

Theme Tuesdays: Instagram Builds You Should Be Following

0

When this site started Instagram didn’t exist and being an old fart (in internet years) it took me awhile to jump from twitter to Instagram.

Now that I’m a regular user I must admit that it does making keeping track of a lot of things fairly easy and efficient. It has also, much to my surprise, become a place where I keep track of or learn about quite a few builds.

Sure there are a lot of terrible “for the ‘gram” builds there but once you weed through those there are a number of really cool cars and trucks being built.

Today I’ve rounded up just shy of ten, and in the odd case that the build exists outside of Instagram I’ve linked to it as well.

@PLYMOUTHAIR_RADIALTRUCK

I mentioned this build before in a WTF Friday post but they have really been moving on it lately so I felt I should post it again.

How we all feel right about now…..

A post shared by Plymouth Radial Truck (@plymouthair_radialtruck) on

While completing the motor swap alone would be a feat Colorado Auto & Parts is going all out with build addressing and updating nearly every component of the vehicle.

The motor has fired a few times both in and out of the truck, and they are pushing hard to get it up to snuff to make the project drivable.

If you’re wondering the vision for the end product, it’s something like this

I have a sneaking suspicion they might be pulling this one together for SEMA but I wasn’t able to find confirmation at a quick glance.

@R’S Garage

This build was really popular the tail end of last year and I can’t remember if it was Instagram or Facebook where I spotted it first. 2JZ big turbo Subaru wagon is hard to argue with and doesn’t really need much selling.

But that paint and those wheels and yet to be built flares/widebody should be enough to grab you interest should the engine not.

The build seems to have made the hop over to Facebook recently so you can catch up on the most recent progress there, it was also feature on Speedhunters not so long ago.

@GOOMBAJAMES

This build came to my attention after the owner/builder stole the show at Wekfest a few months back.

Working from a render created by Aaron Beck James Schwartz has built a truly one of a kind, F20 powered, 1930 Model A five window coupe.

View this post on Instagram

Story time/Throwback to October when I came across a CL add 2 hours south about an original 1930 model A 5 window coupe. No photos just a brief description, now one major challenge with these cars are a lot of older gentlemen own them/ build them that don't really know how to work technology and post photos nor send photos and all they want to communicate through is email. This photo took 2 months to receive but I knew the moment I saw it this was the one. With that being said it took 3 months of slow communication to convince him to part ways with the body as that is all I really needed. Crazy to see where she is now instead of rotting in a backyard. Thanks for all the love on her recently! #modela #TheGreatDepression

A post shared by James Schwartz (@goomba_james) on

Super interesting in both execution and fabrication work, James has been steadily chipping away at the build to get it to a point he deems as “completed”. Recently (well somewhat recently) released a little youtube video of the car.

I imagine once it’s up to his standards more coverage will emerge.

@SRADLEY54

Remember the insanely well-built LS Miata I posted in the Importfest coverage? Well it belongs to Brad Ruiter aka @scradley54. In that coverage I mentioned calling it an LS-Swapped Miata was a bit of an under sell and here’s why.

Yeah, it’s got one of the nicest integrated tube front ends I’ve ever seen complimented by awesome metal work and finish colors. Even if you are not a fan of v8 Miatas you have to admit this car is the real deal.

It’s also not the only cool vehicle he owns, these are his too:

In addition to Instagram there’s also a Club Roadster build thread for the Miata but it looks like most of the images are dead.

@SHAWNHIBMACRONAN

I think I first saw this build on Stanceworks but it was so long ago I can’t really be certain. At any rate Shawn is an outstanding Artist out of California who’s building a “Street Legal Sculpture” in pursuit of love, inertia, and the perfect stance.

His instagram is a mesh of his project Econoline van and art installations and quite honestly one of the more interesting accounts that I follow. Artists tackling builds isn’t something I come across often but the ones I have seen usually turn out pretty awesome because artists have an attention to detail and creativity someone with a purely mechanical mind doesn’t always have.

Take for example his centre console/engage cover

Have you ever seen something quite like it before? Me Either.

More information on the direction of this build and the mindset behind it can be found here Shawn’s website.\

@EVELTWIN

Matt’s work has been featured here pretty much any time fabrication is mentioned ant that is because he’s really, really, good at it.

Similar to Shawn he’s got an artistic side which means that a lot of his work come out looking very aesthetically pleasing as well as 100% functional and useful.

He also dabbles in art now and again, all of which is awesome as well.

But his continued Dodge project is his main focus of late and gets better every time I see it.

@OBES_SEBO

I have to admit when I first saw this build I thought it was a joke. I mean the wheels are so damn wide that I couldn’t believe someone was seriously thinking about fitting them under a car. When I saw they were destined for an e30 I just about put my phone down and walked away.
https://instagram.com/p/3IYhjEIMWB/?taken-by=obes_sebo
https://instagram.com/p/3KXjh8IMY-/?taken-by=obes_sebo
However Sebo Wang seems to be pretty determined to fit the super wide BBS wheels and fit them properly. By properly I mean no universal flares, no gobs of camber, and no tires stretched to an insane degree. Buddha Concept Designs is doing the work the same shop that handled the metal wide body on this Lexus GS, so the car is in good hands.
https://instagram.com/p/3h0B1doMQn/?taken-by=obes_sebo
https://instagram.com/p/6WS4fKIMa9/?taken-by=obes_sebo

Under the hood is a turbo s50 that he says will do for now.
https://instagram.com/p/sD5RwfoMQK/?taken-by=obes_sebo

His Instagram isn’t strictly about the car (gym and significant other photos make up the rest) but as far as I can tell it’s the only place to get consistent updates.

@911DV8

This widebody LS powered 911 is one of the few out-of-town builds on this list that I have actually seen in person.

It was “complete” at SEMA 2014 and like many a SEMA project for sale soon after.

Thankfully (owner might disagree on that one) it didn’t sell it seems like they are wrenching on it again, at least for the sake of LSfest.

Hopefully some video of the car driving turns up after LSfest because idle videos are not enough!

@TROPHYLTD1990

This is actually the build that inspired this entire post. Baker’s “4 Seater Whoop Eater” is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. A Ford LTD (famously called a Ford POS in the movie Men In Black) turned into a trophy truck… err car? Outstanding.

At 64 posts deep this build got really serious real quick. First under the hood.

I don’t often recommended lifted builds but if there’s any I do recommend following it is this one.

I have this real sinking feeling that I’m forgetting a few obvious builds or two so if you have any that you’re following let me know in the comments and I’ll either add them to this post or save them for a follow up.

In the meantime I am going to keep thinking and waiting for that bolt of lighting to hit me that will remind me of some builds I left out.

Event Coverage: The 2015 Jalopy Jam Up

7

This year is the only year I’ve used a calendar to plan out the events I would attend, and one of the first events I marked off was The Jalopy Jam Up.

Last year’s event had perhaps the worst weather of any show I’ve been too and it was still one of the most enjoyable to attend, so this year I had my fingers crossed for the better part of the summer hoping for good weather.

The day of the event the weather forecast was fantastic and the The Jalopy Jam Up, a show that showed worlds of potential in 2014, blew away all expectations in 2015.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-crowd-1

Once again held at the one of a kind Frontier Ghost Town in the City Of Durham the Jam Up played host to not only some of the best traditional Hot Rods from Ontario but a few out of province, and even out of country cars as well.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ford-chevy-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ford-front-end

But the show wasn’t just Hot Rods (even though that could have been enough) there was a large number of era correct kustoms, sleds, and bikes scattered throughout the grounds between the various wooden buildings of the venue.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-red-flames

The laid back vibe, and friendly atmosphere of this event mirrored that of the E.L.T.A. Summer Bash the week before and I must admit after attending these events back to back I wondered why I attend any other type of show.

jalopy-jam-up-truck-lineup

Events like these really make you aware of the intangible element that exists in hot rod culture that people worry may be dying.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-rat-rod-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-just-a-rat

However being at the Jam Up you can’t help but feel that Hot Rodding is still very much alive and that each person in attendance is doing everything within their power to ensure that it doesn’t go anywhere.

While I’m glad to be growing up in the era I am I can’t help but look at these cars and think what it must have been like when everything was a lot simpler and to the point.

Small car stripped, big motor, grab your friend (or if you’re lucky brave girlfriend) and go out for drive, wind in your hair, bugs in your face.

Sounds like a great time doesn’t it?

jalopy-jam-up-2015-duces-up-2

So many of these cars are rolling, working, time capsules that just accumulate more value and character as time goes by.

jalopy-jam-up-57

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-3

Not all of the builds were original of course, many of them were built recently but done exactly how they were done back then with the era correct charm and detail that makes you take a closer look.

jalopy-jam-up-black jalopy-jam-up-bugs

As I wandered the venue, accompanied by wife and son, I took in as many details as I could collecting inspiration for my project that I hope to one day bring to the show.

Though I must admit it will probably have to part in the area reserved for not so traditional builds.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-2

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-hamb

Picking favourites at an event like this is near impossible but a car I instantly fell in love with was this gold Cadillac. Low on Astro Surpemes with thin whites and a flaked roof? Perfect.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-1

Also perfect was the body work and the paint cleanliness. The inside of the wheel wells, which were bright white, were cleaner than my car is most of the year.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-4

jalopy-jam-up-mercury-2

I still have not seen as many kustoms as I’d like but I’ll argue that it doesn’t really get better than this.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-2

jalopy-jam-up-2015-caddy-5

One car I’m still kicking myself over not taking more photos of was this killer Kustom Mercury seen rolling out below.

jalopy-jam-up-mercury-1

Heavily modified both inside and out I hope I get to see this car again. Not only to take more pictures but also to ask about this statue sitting in the centre console.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-5

Cliff Waller, the new owner of Mother’s Worry–the Hemi Powered 1930 Ford I posted not too long ago– brought it out the Jam Up before hauling it back to his native Texas.

jalopy-jam-up-mothers-worry-2

Beside it was his second Canadian acquisition, a small gravity powered custom-built Hot Rod that my son Ash absolutely loved.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-ash-1

As I expanded my loop around the grounds I found myself in the swap meet area of the show where some people no doubt walked away with a few incredible deals.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-norwell-speed-shop

jalopy-jam-up-2015-field-of-dreams

It was there I ran into a few friends as well, My friend Keith of the previously featured Binbrook Speed & Custom shop, who brought out a his 90 inch death trap and project ’26 Ford roadster.

jalopy-jam-up-binbrook-speed-shop-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-binbrook-2

And my friend Jay of Distorted Vision, both old riding buddies who are now well on their way to becoming very well-known hot rod builders in Ontario.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-distorted-vision

The grass was also where I spotted a few builds I’d seen at other venues, Pat’s immaculate ’51 Chevy that I spotted at Vanfest was there.

jalopy-jam-up-chevy-5-window

And Kevin Crowhurst’s (Air Assisted) bagged Ford pick up.

jalopy-jam-up-air-assisted

The owner of this Ford is still elbows deep in his build but with a cab, motor, and suspension it was more than complete enough to bring out and display.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-under-construction

While the show is aimed towards a very specific sub set of car modification builds outside that criteria are not turned away and they too are found in the grass. The car below might take a few more modern approaches but it’s no less impressive than the other cars a the venue.

jalopy-jam-up-wiilys

This ‘catch all’ parking lot is where I came across an extremely unusual, and extremely large, hot rod of sorts.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-war-machine-1

jalopy-jam-up-2015-war-machine-2

Andy McJannett and I started at it for a while trying to figure out where the parts came from and at best we could guess that the cab was perhaps from a Chevy C10. Being widened and chopped though who’s to say for sure?

jalopy-jam-up-2015-dodge-power-wagon

Rivalling Frankenstien’s monster in sheer size was the Dodge Power Wagon above, I didn’t give it a thorough once over but I feel like there might a more modern chassis lurking underneath the vintage body.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-51-chevy-bagged

Keeping a keen eye for any Advanced Design trucks to draw inspiration from I took a long glance at this black and red chevy. The two tone isn’t exactly how I’d do it but the ride height and wheel set up is right!

jalopy-jam-up-2015-austin

I also saw the drag prepped Austin that was at the E.L.T.A. summer bash. This angle really emphasizes just how big the rear wheel and tire set up is, I reckon wheelie bars are somewhere on the list of future modifications.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-gasser

jalopy-jam-up-2015-details-4

Coming across my second Ford gasser in as many weeks reminded me that I really need to carve out some time to check out an Ontario Nostalgic Drag Racing Event. Apparently watching vintage cars hit up the 1/4 mile is unlike anything else.

jalopy-jam-up-wagon-1

I was glad to see this two tone Meteor wagon from last year make the trip back this year. It’s such a great looking wagon and the kind of thing that would be perfect for some long extended trips around Canada.

jalopy-jam-up-2015-bone-shaker

I also remember the car above from last year, pinstriping and patina like that is hard to forget.

jalopy-jam-up-cut-it-up

The chrome teeth on the sled above have sure swallowed a lot of miles, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it at almost every classic event I’ve ever attended as Lead Kings Canada members are known to get around.

jalopy-jam-up-rollin

As the weather went from hot to scorching I decided to follow one convoy of cars out as another came in for the evening festivities. One things for certain though I’ll be back next year!

WTF Friday: Up And Out

1

You know, with all the extreme camber and insane static drops I see it’s almost kind of refreshing to know that people who lift their vehicles are also not scared of pushing things far and above what most of us see as limits.

Built by Gibson Fabrication the Blazer above sits on 1 ton axles front and rear a 4 link rear suspension and huge springs all around.

upandout2

upandout4

upandout3

The truck didn’t actually always look so outlandish, with the previous wheel and tire set-up fitted it actually looks more akin to your standard mudder.

My only guess for why the new wheels, tires, and probably ungodly large spacers is shock value.

A short build thread can be found here on tgwforums.com, it only includes pictures of the other wheels however.

Wonder how it corners…
