Product Review: 3D Products HD Polish

0

As most of you know my past two cars have been daily drivers, snow, rain, and sun they have seen it all. They also spend a decent amount of time sitting in parking lots fairly unprotected. My last car was white and hid its exposure to less than desirable conditions quite well but unfortunately my new car is much darker in color and hides nothing.

Early spring some careless individual dragged something (probably a purse or something of that ilk) down the length of my car. The finger nail test revealed that the scratches were not too deep, which meant a good polishing would be rid of it but still, I was miffed.

However I had also just received a bag of goodies from 3D Products Canada including their HD Polish so I decided to see if I could get rid of the scratch myself.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-6

After a quick rinse I took a closer look at the damage and realized that while there was one spot significantly worse than the rest, the entire door could use a bit of help.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-1

After I gave the car a thorough wash and quick dry with 3D’s HD wash I reassessed the damage, and surprise surprise it was still there and even more noticeable now that the car was clean.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-2

This is where I got to work using 3D’s HD Polish.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-3

Now I don’t have the best of detailing tools so it took me a few passes and some elbow grease to see results, but the results were fairly significant.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-4

The photo above reflects about three passes of carefully working to get rid of the scratch. Had I used a proper polisher I probably would have been able to get rid of the scratches in one pass but sometimes you have to work with what you have.

Still, the product goes on and off quite easily, and can be used on hot days in the sun so it is very user-friendly. It also guarantees no swirls or hollogramming.

Finally it doesn’t smell terrible or dust-up excessively like some of the other polishes on the market.

3dproductscanada-hd-polish-review-5

The picture above is when I called it quits and the results pretty well speak for themselves. Happy with my work I moved on to the rest of the driver’s side keeping in mind that I would be getting a more thorough detail (review of that to come soon) in the near future.

3D Products are now available for purchase at 3dproductscanada.com and currently you can get a discount of 15% on all chemicals if you use the discount code GRAND15.

Vossen Wheels/Importfest Downtown Lexus Pop Up Meet

0

Importfest is in full promo mode leading up to their August 22nd event and this past weekend they held a pop up Vossen Wheels Meet pop up the roof top of Lexus Downtown.

The idea of this show was a quick 11-3pm semi formal gathering of Vossen car owners with everyone else welcome to come by and check things out.

I dropped by for about an hour or two took a few photos and grabbed a quick bite to eat.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-2015-roofshot

The main features of the event were the latest and greatest cars from the Importfest stable, the main attractions being the Rocket Bunny RC350 and RCF.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-2015-lexus-1

The Mello Yellow 370 was also out once again with a retina burning layer of vinyl.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-2015-rocket-bunnies

Hiding in the corner was the world’s first Rocket Bunny RCF, hopefully I’ll get a chance to take pictures of this in a less cluttered space really soon.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-2015-rocket-bunnies-2

Harvin’s GTR and Navin’s RX-7 were of course in attendance as well, and they too wear Rocket Bunny kits.

Interestingly another flared car there was this is300. Not sure the make on the kit on this car but the fit and finish looked pretty good.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-is300

Not everything was cut, drilled, and flared though, Blair brought his Audi out which I’ve actually not seen in a while as he’s been spending a lot of time cruising his Impala and Beetle.

vossen-toronto-pop-up-2015-audi-cv2

I have to admit that I didn’t know Vossens were quite so popular in Toronto. I know they had a following but most of the cars at the event I’d never seen before.

Like any Importfest show there were more than a few models on hand, a couple cruising around on these odd personal transport devices I’d never really seen before.

The also debuted their latest Importfest swag and handed out a couple of trophies.

All in all not a bad day to spend a warm Sunday and a great way for Vossen Wheels to show some appreciation to their Toronto fan base.

Heavy Hitter

Tim and Brenda’s Cruise for the Cure is a show I’ve wanted to go to for a few years but somehow always managed to miss for some reason or another. If you’ve noticed 2015 is the year I make an effort to hit a lot of those shows so this year I finally made it out.

The show as a whole was great and they raised an incredible amount of money for charity. In fact the show was so well done and organized that next year I plan to make a full day of it so that I can get more coverage.

One of the vehicles at this year’s show had to be this GMC Cabover which is perched atop a Dodge frame and powered by a Cummins motor.

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-1

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-4

Oh did I forget to mention it was bagged too? Built stateside this truck sat quite nice over Alcoas.

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-3

In the bed was a custom chopper built by Kreater Customs.

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-2

To fit the dodge frame the truck had to be widened which you can see in the fenders and the tailgate.
tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-6

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-5

The interior was completely re done in saddle leather and actually looked quite comfortable.

tim-brendas-2015-cab-over-gmc-7

The owner is currently having Kreater button up a outstanding issues with the truck but it should be back out soon.

Not a bad promotion tool for his landscaping company whose standard work trucks I just started seeing everywhere!

Theme Tuesdays: Recently Viewed – July 2015

1

Last ‘recently viewed‘ post I talked about making this a monthly feature here on the site and completely managed to skip over June. Hrm.

Let’s shoot for bi-monthly minimum this time around and hope that I under promise and over deliver.

Once again here’s a few of the videos I’ve watched recently.

Got a video you want to see in the next post? Shoot me an email.

Event Coverage: Toronto Cars & Coffee – July

0

Years ago when I first heard of Cars and Coffee in California it sounded like the perfect event for me despite the fact that I absolutely despise coffee. The variety of cars, and atmosphere just seemed like the perfect place for a generalist car enthusiast like myself.

Engineered Automotive has managed to capture some of that lighting in a bottle and bring it here to Toronto by holding their own Cars And Coffee the first Sunday of every month at their shop in Vaughan Ontario.

Somehow Engineered Automotive has never blipped on my radar which is weird because Cars and Coffee aside the shop alone is a sight to behold.

cars-and-coffee-engineered-automotive cars-and-coffee-engineered-automotive-e36

The work area of the EA facility was packed with great cars and deeper within the shop I caught glimpses of project I really wouldn’t mind getting a closer at. However for the sake of this trip I kept my attention focused on the cars closest to my lens.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-bmw-z3 cars-and-coffee-ford-mustang cars-and-coffee-ford-mustang-elanor

My love for e30s is no secret so none of you should be surprised that I took a few long looks at this recently restored e30 m3.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-bmw-e30-1

Under the hood the high-strung, and often temperamental s14, has been yanked in favour of what looks to be a s52 s50b32 motor, and the wheels have been swapped out for style 5s.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-bmw-e30-2

The near polar opposite of the e30 m3 sat yards away taking the shape of a Cadillac.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-caddy-1

Meant for cruising in style vs driving fast, it was in such great condition that I wonder if the owner drove through some sort of time warp from the year it was built to 2015.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-caddy-2

Beside the Cadillac was a Viper ACR and a Volkswagen bus the juxtaposition of these two vehicles that are literally worlds apart is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see at cars and coffee.

Outside things got even more interesting as I spotted something I’ve only seen before on computer and TV screens, a Lancia Delta Integrale HF Evo.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-lancia-1

cars-and-coffee-porsche-lancia-2

I’m told there are a few of these in the city, but having never come across those to date I made sure to take my time looking at this one in the event I never see another again.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-lancia-3

This, like apparently all of the other ones in Toronto, was imported over from Japan and in really great shape.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-lancia-34

The mileage regulations over in Japan mean a lot of cars get shipped out when there’s still a lot of life left in them.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-lancia-6

The owner of this car didn’t stay long, no doubt eager to get out and stretch the cars legs a bit.

cars-and-coffee-honda-accord-sir-1

The Lancia wasn’t the only car Imported from Japan at the show, the Accord above is actually a car I almost completely overlooked my first complete lap around the parking lot.

cars-and-coffee-honda-accord-sir-2

Seeing a fifth generation Accord at a show period is rare these days, but this one was special because it is (as far as I know) the only Accord SiR of this generation in Toronto.

cars-and-coffee-honda-accord-sir-3

Rounding out the Japanese Imports was this Toyota Celsior which I mistook for a Lexus LS400 from a distance

cars-and-coffee-toronto-toyota-celsior-5

cars-and-coffee-toronto-toyota-celsior-1

Classic VIP through and through the owner of this car is actually a reader of the site, and a former BMX rider whose messages inspired the recent rider Theme Tuesday.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-toyota-celsior-2

cars-and-coffee-toronto-toyota-celsior-3

Equipped with a Tom’s Racing kit and in immaculate shape I hope to be able to spend a bit more lens time with this car before the season is through.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-toyota-celsior-4

Across from Ken’s Celsior was the Ockwell family’s Citroen 2cv, this marks the only one I’ve actually seen travel down the road here in Toronto.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-citroen2cv cars-and-coffee-toronto-citroen2cv-2

Chris Hoare of Dirty Nails Bloody Knuckles fame was also out at the show with his beautiful NSX which was a favourite of my son Ash.

cars-and-coffee-nsx

Transitioning to German metal once more there were a few tasteful Porsches parked about the Engineered Automotive grounds, the one below looks particularly nice on te37s.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-volks

And this familiar car sitting on rare polished (or perhaps chromed) Compmotives.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-compmotive cars-and-coffee-porsche-compmotive-2

I can’t recall if I simply never noticed the interior before, or if it’s all new but either way it is stunning.

cars-and-coffee-porsche-compmotive-interior-2 cars-and-coffee-porsche-compmotive-interior

Another cool car/wheel combination at the show was this Fiat on OZ racing wheels, these cars look like fun little run-abouts in the right hands.

cars-and-coffee-fiat-500

A Cobra (or perhaps Cobra replica) is almost a prerequisite to any cars and Coffee and this polished one shined bright in the summer sun.

cars-and-coffee-chrome-cobra

Sitting bagged on Rohana wheels I feel pretty confident that the Charger below was built by Christian over at CJR performance. Those two items along with a lot of power are practically his calling card.

cars-and-coffee-srt-2 cars-and-coffee-srt

The parting car for today’s post is this ’27 Ford Model T owned by local musician Rob Cappeleto.

cars-and-coffee-ford-hot-rod-1

This car is pretty much art on wheels, and I would have loved to hear it fire up but I had to shuttle Ash off home for a nap.

Since it’s a statuary holiday this weekend Cars and Coffee Toronto won’t be taking place this month, but the next one is September 6th to there’s plenty of time to plan ahead!

Banned In Quebec: Matt Brunett’s IS300

0

In 2014 the SAAQ (Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec) released an amended list of regulations that all cars travelling Quebec roads need to abide by. Dubbed the ‘Hellaflush’ act many of the new rules strictly out lined what was allowable when it came down to ride height and wheel fitment.

Tire stretch and camber were number one and two on the hit list and one of the first cars snared in the SAAQ’s display of power was the is300 brought to you today via the lens of
Emilio Ciccarelli.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-8 matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-4

Though the SAAQ might be taken aback by the amount of negative camber Matt runs the car looks far less jarring than some of the other cars hovering around the streets of Ontario and Quebec.

In fact it flows so well with the is300 body lines that it’s almost easy to forget he’s well past -4 degrees all around.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-7

To achieve the stance he wanted Matt fit his BC extreme drop coil-overs with 14k and 12k springs and used JX 100 upper control arms to provide ample camber adjustment up front.

In the rear Figs Engineering arms dial things in.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-6 matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-14

Since Matt’s car does see a lot of kilometres keeping the toe reasonable was a necessity and Figs engineering arms were used again to help with tire wear.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-15

When it comes to wheels for his Lexus Matt’s brand of choice has always been Work, and Emotion 11rs replace the Miesters the car wore for the 2014 season.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-12 matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-16 matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-2 matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-5

Exterior wise Matt didn’t tamper too much with lines Lexus created for this sports sedan.

Vertex USA pieces have been added all around, and Metallic Brown vinyl done by Nextmod Ottawa gives the car a unique and classy look.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-11

As it sits Matt’s is300 has taken home three well deserved Static awards from Fitted Lifestyle events, with the most being top honours at Fitted Ottawa and Fitted Toronto.

Of course trophies are not really what Matt does it for, but the Fitted awards are an especially nice addition to any garage shelf.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-10

Of late Matt has shifted his attention to the rest of the car and as such the automatic transmission has been plucked out so that a proper 5 speed can make its way in.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-3

Instagram (@mattbrunett) is where you can follow the latest progress on this car and even catch Matt occasionally musing about losing the camber all together and going in an entirely different direction.

matt-brunet-static-is300-emilio-cicarelli-photo-1

What’s truly next for this car might be a mystery but if the revisions so far are any indication of what’s in store I can’t wait to see V.3!

If you want to follow more of Emilio Ciccarelli’s work follow him on instagram at @twolitremedia.

WTF Friday: Hot Tub Time Machine

0

At the Tim and Brenda’s Place charity show this weekend I took a step back in time via a hot tub just like the guys in the surprisingly funny movie Hot Tub Time Machine.

The twist?

This hot tub was in the back of an extensively modified GMC van.

tim-brendas-2015-chevy-astro-hot-tub-1

The van you see above is a serious throwback on its own, chopped/removed top, shortened doors, lack of body lines, tilt front end, and what look to be prime wheels this van is a straight 90s throwback.

Already blown away by this rolling time capsule I was honestly surprised to find the hot tub where I was expecting to see an over the top stereo install.
tim-brendas-2015-chevy-astro-hot-tub-3

I’ve heard of hot tubs in cars before, and even seen them in movies and on-line but this is the first time I saw one in the flesh, jets and all.

The tub wasn’t filled with water, and I didn’t get a chance to ask if it worked but lets just suspend disbelief and hope that it does.

tim-brendas-2015-chevy-astro-hot-tub-2

Also at the show as an equally time period correct ’80s Grand Am Lowrider. Again, I’ve seen a few ‘oddball’ lowrider platforms online, and even done a Theme Tuesday on them, but again this was the first serious example I’d seen in person.

tim-brendas-2015-grand-prix-lowrider-1

Like the banana van it had a tilt front end, but it also had a chrome under carriage and crushed velvet mud flaps.

The interior was done in matching crushed velvet and topped of by a super tiny chain steering wheel.

tim-brendas-2015-grand-prix-lowrider-2 tim-brendas-2015-grand-prix-lowrider-3

The trunk was host to batteries and pumps and interestingly enough two Legacy amps which probably produce about a fraction of the 1000 watts they claim.

tim-brendas-2015-grand-prix-lowrider-4

Hope you enjoyed this little trip back in time and despite my light ribbing props to the owners for keeping these two vehicles on the road.

Look out for a few more cars from the this show over the course of the next week or so.

Event Coverage: Eurokracy 2015 – Pt.1

0

Eurokracy is without a doubt one of the best Euro shows in Canada, in fact it just might be the best eurocentric show in Canada.

Year after year the event grows considerably and this year in order to keep up with the ever-increasing number of entered cars, spectators, and track cars the organizers switched venues from Napierville Raceway to Icar Experience.

eurokracy-2015-burnout-1 eurokracy-2015-drag-1 eurokracy-2015-money-gang-steve-1 eurokracy-2015-money-gang-steve-2

At this point Eurokracy is running like a well oiled machine, so the venue change didn’t provide a single hiccup and people were willing to come from all over Ontario and the nearest bordering states to see just what makes this show so great.

One of the biggest reasons this show draws the numbers it does is because the organizers try to squeeze in as many cars as possible, even if they don’t have VW, BMW, or Audi on the grill.

eurokracy-2015-camaro-1 eurokracy-2015-impala-1

Euro is the focus sure, and they get prime location, but that’s no reason to turn other cars away at the door. I mean it’s not a big stretch of the imagination that a Euro car owner would know a few Honda guys and the odd Chevy fan.

eurokracy-2015-civic-1 eurokracy-2015-civic-2 eurokracy-2015-evo-1

eurokracy-2015-sled-1

However with the name ‘Eurokracy’ it only makes sense that this show brings draws some of the most eccentric, head scratching, and cleanest Euro cars in the area.

From pure function, to boundary pushing static drops this show truly has it all.

eurokracy-2015-fhritp-1 eurokracy-2015-fhritp-2 eurokracy-2015-burnout-2 eurokracy-2015-unix-1

Since I have made plans to go to Montreal the end of the summer for the world round of Formula Drift Canada I opted to sit this one out (which I fully regret) but Rob Anzit (Basic Builds / Camiro Photography) made it out to the show for the first time and I feel pretty confident that 2015 won’t be his last year at the show.

eurokracy-2015-LS-Porsche-1 eurokracy-2015-audi-1

Eurokracy is like lays chips without the greasy fingers and regrets, you can’t go just once.

The photos in today’s post make up a small part of his coverage with even more photos and a video segment coming shortly.

Until then just remember the true spirit of Eurokracy is about having fun and appreciating car life.

One Month To Importfest 2015

4

Augst 22nd Importfest returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for 2015. New this year to Canada’s “Biggest and Baddest” show is an additional hall.

The expansion allows the show to bring in more vendors, cars, and attractions and from what I’ve heard through the grapevine there should be one attraction that hits on both of my interests.

importfest-2015-rx7-ig

Miss Importfest for 2015 will be Dannie Riel.

Importfest_v3

#teamimportfest has been hitting the streets hard and over the weekend I spotted the refreshed Rocket Bunny GTR and Rocket Bunny RX-7 at Tim and Brenda’s Place in King city.

Mr. Importfest himself has also updated his ride.

The BMW is gone and in its place now rests Canada’s First Rocket Bunny Lexus RC.

If you want a sneak peek at this car you can check it out Vossen’s pop up meet here in Toronto this Sunday at Lexus down town.

Stance Is Everything will of course be at Importfest again this year and I’m currently in the midst of finalizing the show line up. As always it should have a bit of everything.

See you there!

Theme Tuesdays: Rotaries In Everything

7

My friend Will (of StanceEast fame) is currently on his second kick at the can building an LS powered FD RX-7. Since his first V8 blew itself to smithereens in about a month he’s been lamenting about the days his car was rotary.

While I’ve mostly convinced him to stick with the LS by reminding him of his failed rotary powered trip to h2o, he has convinced me to do a rotary powered Theme Tuesday.

Since I actually don’t hate rotary engines (I just like v8s more) I accepted this idea, however in typical fashion I decided to make things a bit more challenging for myself and not include a single Mazda.

13b MGB

Start things off with a super old personal spot of mine from 2010, I actually forgot I took these photos and have never seen this car again.

20B Delorean DMC-12

This one comes from an old WTF Friday post. Speed wise the stock Delorean needs all the help it could get, and since painted Deloreans are often crashed ones I imagine no one is too upset about this.

3rotord3

3rotord1

The dash came along for the ride here as well.

12a Ford Cortina

I have not seen heads or tails of this car since 2011, which kind of sucks, but hopefully it’s still rolling around close to the ground powered by a 12a.

A bit more info about this car is located here, and here.

12a Datsun Sunny

The Sunny and the Cortina look kind of similar so it only makes sense for one to follow the other. I wasn’t able to find much on this one however…

Rotary AE86s

I guess this is semi popular as I was able to find two examples relatively quickly. I guess it makes sense as I imagine early RX-7s and AE86s being similar in weight.

13B Beetle

Stumbled upon this when looking for the car below and figured it too was worth a post. This car was completed nearly a decade ago.

Rotary Powered, Beetle Panned, Golf MKI

Another WTF Friday veteran this car was feature on Speedhunters last year. It features a built, bridge ported 13b under the hood …err rear mounted.

pipey_2

pipey_4

pipey4

13b Datsun 510

I’ve seen this Datsun a few times before but never really researched what was in it, I’ve since found out spinning those big rear wheels is a bridge ported, blue printed, turbo 13b.

rotary-powered-4

rotary-powered-5jpg

There’s a pretty detailed site dedicated to this very car right here.

13 Totoya Corolla

You can take a rotary fan out of a Mazda but you can’t take the rotary motor out from under their hood. Southern Fresh has the feature on this car but the meat and potatoes under the hood is a 13b with velocity stacks.

Das Speedster

What do you do when you have a really rotten VW Beetle, but don’t feel like sending it to scrap? You cut off everything too rubbish to use and make one of the coolest Volksrods ever out of the scraps and then put a 12a Rotary between your new frame rails.

Insanely enough this car was also built in just 73 days.
