Winter Wednesdays: Built for this

9

As I sit and type this (Tuesday night) I wait in anticipation for 30 predicted centimeters of snow to fall between now and the morning timed perfectly to make my morning commute hell. Times like these make me wish I had an awd car so I could be as low as I wanted and not really have to ever worry about getting stuck.

Subaru owners like Jason don’t have to worry about things like this because their cars were made to tackle dirt, mud, and snow fast and with no problems.

The most obvious mod on Jason’s Subaru is one that came straight from the Subaru factory, an STI front end swap, in addition to that he’s also got a 3 inch turbo back exhaust, blow off valve, short shifter, and tein flex coilovers.

Jason has his suspension set at a height that gives him the aesthetic and handling advantages of a low ride while maintaining enough ground clearance to be able to drive this Subbie daily through the streets of Vermont dry or snow covered.

Snow problem.... I know, bad pun
Jason needs a Mr. Plow sticker 😉
Jason's wagon looks sick with the STI front end swap
I bet that 3" turbo back lets that boxer burble
Jason's got more plans for his Subaru and I hope he shares them as he does em

Thanks go out to Chris (sent in the pictures) and Jason for contributing to this post.

If you want to send in some pictures of your dropped ride in the snow just shoot me an email at [email protected] (remove the dots).

I might post up later today how I fared in our snow ‘storm’.

Update:Made it to training, no big deal.

Theme Tuesdays: P Cars

14

I am kind of in between pulling together a few more unique (read: completely random) Theme Tuesdays right now and some of the more par for the course ones I have which are in the later stages of completion are missing that last final ‘it’ car before I’m really to call them a wrap.

So today I’ve decided to post up some of my Porsche photo  collection.

There is a decent variety of model and vintage in this post but one thing that ties them all together (other than the iconic Porsche badge) is that they all look fantastic.

Kick things of with a classic Carrera
This cars got curves for days
Clean black slant nose
Lucky driver
This brings to mind a similar photo of a 964 spitting flame on a dyno
This is the one I mentioned above, my desktop for a long time
I have no idea what race series this is but the photo is wicked
This could either be the end of or the beginning of a great day
So what it's raining? Get on the gas
Hail to the classics
Maison Derrière
From the looks of it this car's got function and form
Nice bum where you from - Anyone used that line successfully?
A ton of 1969 Porsche 917s
Techart GT Street RS in a wind tunnel, wind tunnels are awesome

Next week I am either doing: Morris Minors, Evo X’s (again) or Honda Accords want one more than another? Let me know.

Fat and Flush 2

6

My friend Jay who is an E30 fitment guru, and one half of the driving force behind local BMW shop Stance Factory, gave me the heads up on this e36 that’s wearing 265 Hankook tires all around.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen this car, and I know the owner drives it hard, so I’m glad to see it’s still in once piece and still set up to have the wheels driven off of it.

Form > Function is starting to turn (back?) into Form = Function.

The specs on this setup are: 18 x 9.5 Work Meisters Forgeline Competitions, et19 all around without the help of spacers.

Suited and booted much respect to functional fitment
This car is built to be driven
The perfect street driven/track car compromise?
Can't wait to see some photos of this car cornering hard, I'm sure they are coming
Lots of work has gone into those fenders to get all that sticky rubber to fit

Found on Bimmerforums via Jay at Stancefactory.

I’m down to continue this ‘Fat and Flush’ series and even make a category for it if you guys have some setups you would like to send in.

Featured Photographer: David Nguyen

2

Once again showing love to Canadians behind the lens, today’s featured photographer hails from the home of The Oilers, Edmonton Alberta.

David, who never really thought about getting into photography, started shooting photos as a way to generate original content for his automotive site Import Bible which is a combination of Alberta auto enthusiast content and unique automotive apparel.

Now a little over a year after he began David is hooked on capturing automotive imagery.

Everything about this photo is awesome but the composition really grabs me

David made the transition from casual shooter to employed photographer when a previous co worker asked him to take photos of exotics for a new project he was working on.

This arrangement worked out great for David because while he was getting paid to shoot cars he loved, he was also expanding his own professional portfolio.

Excellent capture of an awesome engine bay

When shooting his own projects David shoots with a Nikon D3000 and has an 18-55mm lens, 35mm 1.8F lens and a SB600 flash stored in his camera bag and when he shoots for his employer he still uses a Nikon but a D90 instead of his D3000.

Great photographers make even the simplest things look artistic

The photos you are looking at in this feature are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to David’s photographic talent.

Every photographer should be lucky enough to have a red Ferrari in their portfolio
It looks like Alberta has wonderful scenery
David seems to hang around with a lot of Lamborghini owners
Another beautifully composed shot
Looks like there are lots of high rollers in Alberta
Nice capture of an SLS
Black beauty
Looking like a lady showing a little leg

If you would like to see more of David’s work, get in touch with him for a project, see whats going on in Alberta, or purchase some new duds check out what he has going on at Import Bible.

WTF Friday: So you like burnouts?

6

The first video I in today’s post I saw Monday and thought to myself damn that was pretty awesome wonder why it took someone so long to do it. Then, a few days later my friend Marc sent me the second video which was more surprisingly more ridiculous than the first.

I am a big fan of vehicle on vehicle burnouts, environmentalists and the local authorities might not be but I think I have made enemies out of them long ago.

Site Updates

New featured photographer confirmed for Monday, actually it’s written and has been written since last Monday but I’ve decided to wait until this Monday to post it.

I am also going to be checking out a local facility tomorrow that’s all about classic cars which should be an awesome expirence to say the least. I’m bringing my camera so I should have that next week.

I’ve been meaning to go for awhile now and finally arranged all the details with them to make it happen. Keep an eye on facebook/twitter for live updates while I’m there.

Speaking of next week, Tuesday to Friday I am doing some more off-site training at work which means that posts will probably happen before (breakfast) and after (dinner) work just because I can’t really gauge how much time I will have to sneak away to blog during the training.

Posts won’t stop though.

Flashback Friday

The Accord Wagon I posted yesterday reminded me that I did a Theme Tuesday on cars with smooth wheels

I love this CRX, you?

Body Dump

4

I’ve been watching a lot of Dexter lately (just started season 4) and it most certainly had an influence on the title of this post.

The owner of this early body s10 certainly doesn’t murder people but he has killed any sign of gap between those up-sized Iroc reps and his Hot Rod Flatz painted fenders with a healthy body drop and air ride setup.

The built 350 under the hood is also sure to take a few miles of the life of the tires on those 20s.

About three or so years ago I wanted to do this same thing to a Blazer and truthfully I still sort of do…

This truck was destined to be posted here once I saw this shot
Drag that sh!t
The cowl/intake hood setup on this truck is like none I have seen before
350 bored over, ported and polished, planed heads, 500 lift 302 duration competition cam, pistons, holly 750,
If this truck was any other color I probably wouldn't like the hood but I do in this case

Source.

Maybe one day I will try and build another truck….maybe

Unique Accord

13

Stumbled upon this Honda Accord wagon a few days ago and while the ride height is quite low its the wheels that made me ‘right click save as’. They are most certainly not the type of rims you would expect see on an import but they actually don’t look too out of place on this wagon.

A little different but not bad at all in my opinion.

I wish I knew the specs, but I am going to say fairly tall 18s or higher judging by the amount of camber needed to get them to fit.

Parking garages, a classic photo shoot location
Does Honda still make a good looking wagon?
Tires probably don't last too long before a flip
Reserved, low only

Hat tip to the owner for choosing rims out of a different catalog than everyone else.

Winter Wednesdays: On the plus side

8

Today’s Winter Wednesday is a bit different than all of the ones I have posted previous. It contains two cars and both get covered in snow and slush, but only one has it’s tires set on the ground, the other is just along for the messy ride.

The owner of these cars, Zakinen (from SubaruForester.org), is a pretty lucky guy he drives a dropped Subaru Forrester as a daily and on days he’s not working he uses it as a tow rig for his  ae86 track car.

Those of you who read Speedhunters may remember his cars from a recent post called ‘Pulling in style‘ which he certainly does.

Perhaps the perfect combo?

One day in December he decided to take his AE out to a track day at the Grobnik track in his homeland of Croatia.

He spent the night before hand getting everything ready and loaded onto the trailer with no idea that while he was sleeping mother nature was going to try her best to completely ruin his plans.

Like a true Subaru owner when he woke up and saw snow on the ground he didn’t skip a beat.  He checked the forecast and saw that no more snow was going to be falling on the track so he fueled up and rolled out.

Everyone else now has no excuse for not taking it to the track
Ugh weather like this is depressing

On the way to the track things got really messy for both cars but since no more snow was falling he forged on in hopes he would be able to stretch his Toyota’s legs out on the track.

Poor car got filthy and not driven

Once he got to the track however there was a small problem, it was covered in so much snow that even the track operators couldn’t quite tell where it was and therefore didn’t know where to send the plow.

How did he over come this problem? He looked up the track layout on his phone, unhooked his Forrester and hit the gas.

Zakinen off to find the track
Looks like he eventually found the track
It also looks like he found lots of fun

After having some fun with his Forrester on the snowy track with a few other adventurous 4×4 owners he reluctantly called it a day, packed up, and headed home without ever getting to take his Hachi out on the track.

Next time.

Theme Tuesdays: Lexus LS400s

4

About this time two weeks ago I posted up a clean LS400 and put forth the question about whether or not I should do a full LS400 Theme Tuesday.

The response I got was basically a resounding ‘yes‘ so I hit up Aidan, who I normally ask about Lexus/VIP matters, and he helped provide some links and photos to pull this together.

These big Lex sedans look really good dropped, wish I had a chance to see more of them in person.

Lots of stagger on this LS
Don't see a lot of Work Carving Heads these days
These photos look older but the car holds up well
They look like behind the scenes photos I wonder where the finals are
Could use a little more contrast but nice overall
One part of Toronto's very small VIP community
This cars just on the verge of Oni Camber
Radius-ed fenders, slammed, white letters hell, sick
Like the one last week this wears its two tone well, and that plate? Hilarious
It's interesting how smooth a lack of wipers makes a car
Yes
Huge, polished Equips
Is it just me or is that a giant house?
Looks like sliding a big sedan like this has a bit of a learning curve
Basically perfect
Not always a fan of gatling gun headlights but they look good here
Rollin heavy, rollin hard

Thanks for the tips and photos Aidan!

He’s at it again

sumTHAIguy on the Mazda3forums has been pushing Mazda fitment, more specifically Mazda speed 3 fitment, for awhile now going a little lower and a little wider each time. After looking great on 350Z rims for a quick second he bolted up his new set of kicks, SSR Longchamps XR4Z kai’s, and knocked the doors of possibility down for the speed3 in regards to ride height,  stretch, and poke.

This current setup isn’t for the faint of heart, at 18×9.5 +13 this car is a stark contrast from the speed3 I posted last week.

However based on the mostly positive feedback the video of him getting out of his driveway got on the facebook fan page quite a few of you dig his new look.

Bolting the new setup up this is the point where I would be worried
Lookin' pretty good at a stand still
The owner of the 3 behind him has been pushing regular Mazda 3 hatch fitment for awhile too
Out onto the road, pebble pushing status achieved
His bumper is basically quick release status these days
Like I said, not for the faint of heart
Love this picture

It’s my hope that this current setup sticks around for a bit, or at least long enough for him to sort out those rubbing issues, because it does look really impressive setup like this.

However after following his thread on M3F for awhile now I have a feeling this setup only has a little while before he thinks of something else…
