WTF Friday: Harley Wheelies

0

So, I am willing to admit that when it comes to the land of motorcycles I am more or less in the dark and privy to what other people share with me, or things that I randomly stumble across by happenstance.

So, that said, people may have been doing wheelies on Harley Davidson Motorcycles for a long time and I am just now finding out, or, going this crazy behind the bars of a Harley is a somewhat recent trend.

Either way it looks absolutely insane and I love it. This first video I watched after it was mentioned in a Smoking Tire Podcast. I’ve seen videos of a lot of ridiculous stuff go down on Mulholland Highway but this is right up there with some of the craziest.

I don’t profess to be a Harley guy at all, but apparently the bikes are modified Street Bobs and pretty farm removed from the large, sometimes slow, loud as hell, cruisers I normally associate with the HD brand.

The guys up above seem to not be alone because if you search Harley Wheelies a lot of videos on YouTube pop up including the one above and the one below by Unknown Industries (who seem to be some sort of authority on this sort of thing) and they do it on bikes that are much more inline with what I think of when it comes to Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The latest Unknown Industries video, the Unknown Ride, is my favorite so far, but it seems like this rabbit hole goes pretty deep and I’m just at the beginning.

Got any videos I need see? Feel free to add them in the comments.

Opposite Day

Shake Rabble and Roll is a local themed diner about fifteen minutes from my house and is my go to on Monday’s and Saturdays if I have a few minutes to fill between dinner and Ash’s bed time and feel like looking at cars.

I’ve been about six times now and while there are some regulars (one of which I’ll post next week) there are a lot of new cars that come and go as well and this post has one of each.

I’ve seen the car a few times, it sounds really mean, looks rough, and is the type of car that if it were a person you wouldn’t want to come across in a back alley.

ford-rat-3ford-rat-1ford-rat-2

The 54 Ford truck on the other hand, while still mean, is a lot more refined and a vehicle and is what I would more equate to the type of person you wouldn’t want to meet in court.

54-ford-pickup-1

54-ford-pickup-2

Due to where it was parked I couldn’t get nice photos of the front so the rear will have to do for now, I’m sure I’ll see it again and perhaps I’ll ask for a peek under hood.

Blair has been asking me to shoot some rolling shots of his previously featured ’59 Beetle for a few weeks now, and last weekend we convinced John to be the wheel man while I manned the no fun gun.

The idea was to go East bound for a few exits while I got my settings right –these are actually my first rolling shots– then turn around and head west so I could shoot a few more.

Unfortunately the Beetle was having none of it with the splines wearing themselves off the axles. We ended up having to coast/push/coax the car back to Blair’s house before heading back to the shop.

Fortunately though I did manage a few shots, these two being the best of the bunch.

Next subject to get rollers of will have to be John’s truck, then perhaps the Beetle again once it is back on the road.

Theme Tuesdays: Local Trunk Set Ups

0

Last week I featured local unique motor swaps for Theme Tuesday and this week, spurred by the trunk of the 1995 “Goldmine” Cadillac from the 6th Annual Majestics/Luxurious BBQ coverage, I’ll be posting some of my favorite local trunk set ups from over the past few years.

With each passing year the bar gets raised even higher for what constitutes a “good” trunk install which in turn pushes builders to be more and more creative.

The set up in my car is pretty simple, and tucked away, but the truck might need to get a hardline or two after pulling this one together.

Going to take things way back to 2011 and one of the first hardline set ups I had seen at the time, clean simple, with still a lot of usable trunk space

I am going to stretch the definition of the word trunk here only because this is still one of the most unusual air tanks I have ever seen.

Event Coverage: The 6th Annual Majestics/Luxurious BBQ

0

By now most of you already know that I make a point to attend at least one lowrider BBQ every year because I’m a whole fan of the lowrider lifestyle. Yes I said lifestyle, and unlike a lot of other blogs I don’t toss that word around every other post.

Lowriding, to these clubs, is truly a lifestyle, and that lifestyle is why these events are some of the best events in the city. Families are welcomed and encouraged, everything is free of charge.

Though it’s much larger than the average house or block could hold, the event still has a backyard barbecue vibe that makes it so genuine.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-2-drive majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-tree-viewmajestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-over-view

I know it’s a bit broken record to drive home how positive the vibe is at these events every year, but they really are a top five event for me.

Because they are a top five, when given the option of taking my dad, who was in town from Jamaica, to this show or any other show that day I chose this one.

In addition to bringing my dad I brought Ash too which marked this event as the first the Thomas family made an appearance at three generations deep.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-caprice-2majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-switches-n-thangs-jeff majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-tri-five

This years BBQ had clubs from Toronto, obviously, and Montreal, again a given as these two lowriding scenes are very tight, but cars from Detroit, and clubs from a few other neighboring states came out as well to see exactly how the Toronto Majestics and Luxrious clubs get down.

Since the Rollerz Only had their BBQ the weekend before this meant many of these car owners did the commute two weekends in a row without a single complaint.

My pops hasn’t owned a modified car for a long time but if he has allegiance to anything its cars made before 1990, and American classics are right up there because those were the cars of his generation.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-up-downmajestics-luxurious-bbq-chevy-truckSo walking around he couldn’t help but take a few pictures with his phone to show the friends he’d be touching base with here in Canada before skipping back to his retirement paradise in Jamaica.

He, and I, both really liked this big block Camaro. A split bumper model, it was clean and tidy and with 572 cubic inches under the hood I suspect it would have no problem pulling the wheels into the air with the hammer down.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-hop-4

Speaking of wheels up my dad had never seen hoppers before, so it was fun to see his reaction to these big cars laying bumper.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-hop-3He seemed a bit confused that people would put so much money into their cars only to violently hop them up and down, but as I explained to him these cars are built for that, and their owners live for it.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-hop-1

My apologies for the similar angle and small number of hopping photos this year. Immediately after the first car Ash wanted on my shoulders, which made taking photos a bit difficult.

The cars hopping made a lasting impression on him though, and he’s been hopping the 65 Riviera Ruben gave him at the show ever since.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-ash

Ruben’s car was one of the first I showed my dad to give him an idea of just how detail focused lowriders can be.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-details-5majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-details-4

I didn’t take too many pictures of his ’64, only because I still feel that his feature is some of my best work, but I did take a few detail shots of it and a few of the other cars at the show.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-details-2

Details, details, details, and more details. It never ceases to amaze me how much detail is put into these cars, especially the undersides, considering that most drive to the BBQ under their own power and get driven fairly regularly.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-1majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-1c

I don’t get to see ‘Bombs’, or pre 1955 chassis based, lowriders very often but I always consider myself fortunate when I do. These cars have a whole different feel about them and usually are static, or on very simple hydraulic systems with limited lift drop and speed, but still command respect on the street and turn heads.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-2

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-2-interiorThis fleetline? Beautiful. And the blue car above? More of the same. I’m sure there are plenty of Kustom builders disagree and would rather see these cars as sleds but me, I’m happy I love in a city where I can see both from one weekend to the next.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-2bmajestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-bomb-2a

I also have to admit I was happy to finally see a Blazer done up on hydraulics. I’m a Blazer fan, and I’m a lowrider fan so of course I liked this, but it’s not something people have really been doing much of say the past eight years or so (probably more), so shout out to the owner of this one.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-chevy-blazer

The Toronto chapter of the Cadillac Kings car club have quickly brought together some of the best looking Cadillacs of the city, which given their name only makes sense.

This ’65 Deville proves that hubs and whites are sometimes the only way to go when the original lines of the car look so good.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-cadillac-kings-4

At any angle the car looked imposing and really low.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-cadillac-1

Parked a few cars over this ’95 is perhaps the newest truly complete lowrider build on the streets of Toronto.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-cadillac-2

I’ve seen some really impressive trunk set-ups before, of all different genres, but this has to be one of the cleanest, no question. Astheitcally and physically clean it was clear someone put a lot of time into pulling this trunk set up together.

majestics-luxurious-bbq-2016-cadillac-3

Pinstriping, gold plating, and gold leafing, done to the nines.

Of course it’s no true lowrider coverage without a healthy douse of 60s Impala love, and that’s where we’ll end the coverage of the 2016 Majestics/Luxurious BBQ.

If you’re STILL not going to some of these events a year you really need to make some time. Great food, great times, great people.

WTF Friday: Mr. Belvadere

0

Often artists are behind some of the craziest cars in existence, being creative at their core it only makes sense that their free thought travels into all aspects of their life, including car building.

Matt Van Overloop is an artist, he makes wicked signs, awesome wall art, and enviable pedal cars for kids. Matt is also building an outstandingly well thought out ’53 Plymouth Belvadere with C4 suspension, powered by a Viper V10 motor he somehow picked up for $600.

I spotted this build on Jesse Bower’s Just A Car Guy Blog and kept it on the back burner until I had some time to look a bit closer. The progress on Matt’s page, Lightly Engineered, doesn’t to back to the beginning but it goes back far enough.

(Edit: found a very detailed thread on protouring.com).

mrb1

Jumping in at the first picture on the Facebook page you can see that the stock floor and frame are history, Matt has instead opted to put a new frame under the car and channel the car over said frame.

mrb2

Check out the bear shaped gusset in the frame, what a unique detail to add and something only an artist would really do.

mrb3

Now look at the fact that you can no longer even see that bear, hidden details covered incredible work. I wonder how many other gems like that will be hidden in this build.

mrb7mrb4mrb5

The artisan metal work continues into the interior where Matt is making every panel from scratch, did you notice the gusseting around the door frame? No detail is overlooked with this car and when it is finished rolling art will be the only proper way to describe it.

mrb6mrb8

The exterior looks to be rocking its original Patina, and based on his previous builds I don’t think there are plans to change that but you honestly never really know how a project will wind up until its finished.

As of June the car is on the ground, running, and moving so who knows how long it will be until we see some shake down video.

Matt is clearly a very busy man so while I won’t be holding my breath I will be following along on Facebook at Lightly Engineered and on protouring.com

Blown’ Up The Spot

0

As long as there are no objections I am going to keep posting random Durham region cars every Thursday until I run out of content, and since I usually take Ash to at least one classic cruise in a week I don’t think I’ll be running out of content any time soon.

These two blown GMs were spotted at three different events, a Saturday night Canadian Tire cruise in, a Father’s Day Show, and the Grass Roots car show.

The first is, I’m pretty sure, a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

grass-roots-2016-supercharged-2grass-roots-2016-supercharged-5

I unfortunately have no hard info about either of these cars, but they certainly look to be very purpose-built, equipped with drag wheel and tire set ups, blown small blocks, and tube front ends.

grass-roots-2016-supercharged-3grass-roots-2016-supercharged-6

grass-roots-2016-supercharged-4

The second car is a Pontiac Beaumont and I heard rumblings that this particular car puts down 1300 to the wheels which means it would have no problem backing up it’s vanity plate.

supercharged-pontiac-beaumont-1

That plate, if you’re wondering, isn’t real but it has been on the car both times I have seen it so it’s safe to assume the owner is down to run it until it becomes a problem.

supercharged-pontiac-beaumont-2

I’ve also been told this car can be regularly spotted cruising around Durham gas prices be damned.

supercharged-pontiac-beaumont-3

Huge tubs allow the Billet specialties wheels to fit just right, and the front end has been brought down for the perfect rake.

supercharged-pontiac-beaumont-4

I love the fact that cars liek these roam the streets and I really hope this never changes.

Theme Tuesdays: More Unique Local Motorswaps

0

Way back in 2009, when this site was in its infancy, and I was a fresh-faced blogger with the world at my fingertips, I did a Theme Tuesday post featuring unique local motor swaps.

The idea behind that post was two-fold; one showcase the ingenuity of local enthusiasts, and two show people the site’s reach was wider than just suspension and wheels.

That post excelled at both points and actually year after year gets traffic above and beyond some of the other Theme Tuesday posts that have followed. This all means that a second round has been long, long overdue.

2JZ Jaguar XJ

This Jaguar tops the list as the most recent unique motor swaps I have come across spotted only a few weeks ago at the Trendsetters show in Brampton.

trendsetters-2016-powerade-center-2jz-jag-6trendsetters-2016-powerade-center-2jz-jag-2

With a body that is showing its age, and somewhat dated chrome 20s, I didn’t give this car a second look until I heard the faint sound of a turbo as it cruised through the show looking for a spot to park.

trendsetters-2016-powerade-center-2jz-jag-4

trendsetters-2016-powerade-center-2jz-jag-5

When the hood was popped, and I saw the swiss army knife of Japanese motors, the Toyota 2JZ, things started to make a little sense.

trendsetters-2016-powerade-center-2jz-jag-3

For those of you who may have been curious from the original post the car is auto, which actually suits a barge such as this pretty well.

LSA Powered Eldorado

In the first edition of this post there was a Northstar powered Eldorado on air ride, that car was cool but this CTSV (LSA) powered model is a monster.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-cts-swapped-elderao-1cars-and-coffee-toronto-cts-swapped-elderao-3

Spotted last year at Engineered Automotive –at one of their Cars and Coffee events– this might just be the biggest sleeper on the list.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-cts-swapped-elderao-2

It also comes with a warning taped to the door that reads “car accelerates very quickly”, you don’t say.

2UZFE ’76 Celica

Unlike the 2JZ the 2UZFE isn’t a motor that I see a lot of. I think in the years I’ve been doing this blog I have seen one under the hood of a car competing in the Canadian Sport Compact series and the second under the hood of this Dynamotorsports Celica.

motorama-2016-tuner-celica-1

Of course Dynamotorsports, known for their quad digit horsepower cars, didn’t stop at just putting the V8 under the hood. They added a turbo and Ford svt supercharger to the mix just because.

motorama-2016-tuner-celica

I’m pretty sure this one is buttoned up and on the road now and ready to blow the doors off any and all challengers.

VR6 Triumph Tr6

Posted in a WTF Friday a few months ago this TR6 VR6 spot is probably almost two years old.

tr6vr61

tr6vr62
tr6vr63

I’ve only seen the car once, at Spring Fling, but I feel like it is still quietly roaming the streets today flying under everyone’s radar, until of course the gas pedal is trounced and that beautiful vr6 sound is heard.

VR6 S14

Trevor finished this unlikely swap a few years ago but even when version 1.0 was ‘done’ Trevor was never really quite pleased with the car. Last year right after it put down a hair under 700 horsepower he proceeded to take it apart.

vr6t-nissan-s14-engine-bay-3vr6t-nissan-s14-engine-bay-2

Using a blown head gasket as an excuse to start fresh (the car did the 699 pull with said head gasket), things got out of hand quickly and he lopped off the front of the car so he could build a tube front end.

trevor20161trevor20162

Still plugging way I can’t wait to see the next incarnation of this particular s14.

1jz e36

I’m stretching “local” a bit with this one as this car is in Quebec but it was a nice thing to stumble upon at Formula Drift last year.

offset-kings-2jz-e36-1offset-kings-2jz-e36-2

Though slightly less common the 1JZ is starting to make its way under the hood of a few cars…

1JZ e46

…including GT Custom Exhaust‘s e46. Build by Mike Catell, who’s done a lot of impressive fabrication for a bunch of different builds East of Toronto, this car was running with a BMW motor as recently as three weeks ago.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-gt-custom-exhausts-e46-1-dt

I’m not sure if it was mechanical failure or bordem that triggered this one but either way, out with the BMW motor and in with the Toyota unit.

LS Miatas

I tried to keep LS motors in this post to somewhat of a minimum but I pretty well failed because they are everywhere. There’s a few LS Miatas in the city each with their own take on the swap.

Pick your poison as it were.

4BT Miata

I have to admit that I didn’t think this 4bt Miata project would get finished the first time I heard about it. A crowd funded custom car build? Just seemed like a recipe for disaster.

But it looks like the egg is on my face because the motor is in the car, and from what I’ve read does run.

4btmiata44btmiata14btmiata3

It doesn’t look a lot like the initial rendering, but I gotta say hats off for getting it there, and in a day apparently, more info on this one can be found here on facebook which is also where the photos came from.

NV Autos 2JZ Subaru

The inclusion of this car shouldn’t really be much of a surprise, everywhere the car goes people double take once they realize what they are looking at.

importfest-2015-nv-auto-subaru-1 motorama-2016-motors-nv-auto-22016-canadian-international-auto-show-nv-auto-1

While I have seen a few of the cars above only sitting at shows, or quietly idling I have seen this car driven in anger on many occasions.

It does what it was designed to do, and does it well, and Riley does a great job of taming the beast at Formula Drift Canada events.

Pat Cry’s 2JZ FR-S

That last picture segues well into photos of Pat’s 2jz FRS. After tying to make a turbo FA20 do what he wanted Pat switched to a 2JZ swap last season and hasn’t looked back, probably because the rear view is full of tire smoke.

importfest-tt-pat-2 patmotor

Like Riley’s car Pat’s works very well too and this year they have cranked up the boost to really see how much abuse the car can take.

2015-formula-drift-world-round-quebec-qualifying-cyr-4

This has led to a few component failures but nothing the Cyrious Garageworks team can’t overcome.

Drift cars are far from the only projects Cyrious Garageworks is capable of handling and the World War Z Camaro is proof of that.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-world-war-z-1-dnfitted-lifestyle-2016-world-war-z-2-dt

Built in-house this LSA powered car is a monster that wears street and show car clothing. Turning heads and dropping jaws anywhere it goes this car simply had to close out this list.

I’ll do my best not to let a two-year lapse pass between this and the next one, but, if you feel there’s a car I sorely missed do let me know in the comments.

Event Coverage: Eurokracy 2016 – Pt.1

0

We start our Eurokracy Montreal coverage with a brutally hot day at ICAR Circuit, in Mirabel, Quebec. A venue which has not a speck of shade aside from the tents and canopies.

There was no way I was missing Eurokracy after how epic the last season’s event was. Out of the Canadian events I covered last season, this was probably one of my favourites. And this, the Burnout Competition, was the most memorable part.

The Burnout Slut came back for a final, exhaustingly long burnout. Even after the tires had popped, the driver didn’t stop until the ICAR staff cut him off.

I peeled rubber shrapnel off of my clothing and skin as the audience dispersed back out into show area. With numb eardrums, the other media members and I agreed that this part of Eurokracy was well worth the drive alone. Already looking forward to next year!

This is just the beginning of our Eurokracy coverage, much more to come.

There’s no phone here at SIE headquarters, but if there were it would have been ringing off the hook with people calling to see if I had seen Ryan Tuerck’s latest project, a Ferrari 458 Powered Scion FR-S.

Even without a phone I got sent the link to the video below about five times and saw it in my Facebook feed about 50.

The project is an insane undertaking, and its very early on in the progress, but with this much hype around it, and big names behind it, I have no doubt it will get done and be pretty crazy when its finished.

Many people are asking about the intake manifold pointing back into he cabin (and the cut cabin period) but Tuerck says his crew has plans for that.

I usually try not to post what everyone else is posting for WTF Friday but this project is just too crazy to ignore.

The photos are by Larry Chen and the video comes via Donut Media.
