Theme Tuesdays: The Parking Lot Of Fitted 2016

0

The Toronto Fitted Lifestyle event has grown tremendously the past few years, continuing to change and evolve significantly from its parking lot roots of yore. As the event grows in size –this year both buildings were pretty much at full capacity– the parking lot becomes a larger show of its own.

Comprised of individuals who can’t commit to a whole day of showing, casual spectators, those who didn’t make the approval cut or simply applied too late, the parking lot of Fitted 2016 was full of vehicles worthy of a closer look.

Since Drake Nolte, Dan Cyr and myself took so many photos this year I’m going to blur the lines between the Theme Tuesday and Event Coverage categories today to jump-start the Fitted Lifestyle 2016 coverage.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the parking lot at any Fitted event is that the cars found therein don’t always represent the vehicles inside. That is to say not all of them value form over function.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-yellow-beetle-1-dt fitted-lifestyle-2016-yellow-beetle-2-dn

Instead of a lot packed with slammed vehicles the gravel lot of the Brampton fairgrounds is a cross-section of vehicles from all walks, and quite representative of the varied reach of the Fitted Lifestyle brand.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-lifted-s10-dn

Take the lifted s10 above for example, not exactly the car you’d expect to see at a show dedicated to cars with less than half-of-half-of-half of the ground clearance this truck has.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-chevy-s10-1-dn

The sky-high s10 above wasn’t the only ‘S’ truck in the lot either, this 88 or so Sonoma was down in the weeds rocking wheel fitment reminiscent of mini trucks in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-chevy-s10-3-dn

fitted-lifestyle-2016-chevy-s10-2-dn

Looks like part of the reason the owner of this truck came to the show was to see what new Honda Ruckus parts the guys at Mini Moto Lab brought to the show.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-grand-national-front-dnThis Buick Regal T looked menacing and was likely a car that many people thought wouldn’t be owned by someone into aggressive fitment.
fitted-lifestyle-2016-grand-national-front-dt

However, last year the owner of this car (@hemans4) actually had one of the lowest static vehicles in the show, showing up with no bumper simply because ground clearance (and a large intercooler) wouldn’t allow for it.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-grand-national-rear-dt

fitted-lifestyle-2016-grand-national-rear-3-quarter-dt

The Regal is his latest project and from the sounds and looks of things it’s not going to be a slow car in the least.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-chaser-dn fitted-lifestyle-2016-nissan-gtr-1-dt

There’s also all manner of Japanese classics in the parking lot of a Fitted Event.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-ae86-dn

Last year it was a pair of Datusns stealing the show outside the Bramtpon Fairgrounds buildings, this year it was just one part way through restoration.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-datsun-dn

If darn near factory fresh is more your thing about this FB? Kudos to the owner for keeping this vintage rotary on the road!

fitted-lifestyle-2016-fc-rx-dn

Fitted this year was incredibly, incredibly hot which meant a lot of people were coming and going. So the cars in the lot were ever-changing and ever-moving.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-acura-dn fitted-lifestyle-2016-vossen-infiniti-dn fitted-lifestyle-2016-elevated-s2k-dn

Of course this meant that there was no “I’ll go back and look at that later” as you could turn around and said car would be on its way to the main road and off to somewhere cooler.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-odyssey-1-dn

This was almost the case with Luke’s new family truckster. He didn’t stay through the duration of the show but we did get to talk about his new daily driver. Wound down Megan coils Luke’s van sits on 20″ Work wheels straight from Yahoo Auctions.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-odyssey-2-dt

A slammed van throughout the week and a bagged bug on weekends? Luke is certainly living the life.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-civic-1-dn

The slammed Civic hatch, flares, dirt track wheels and copious camber combination has been almost done to death, but this car executed it pretty well.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-civic-2-dn

Not sure if it’s the color choices or what but I don’t mind the look of this car at all, even as I get more conservative in my ‘old’ age.

FITTED2016_20

Speaking of age, not sure if I’m heading towards a mid-life crisis or what but motorcycles are starting to look real good.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-bike-1-dn

The custom Harley Davidson Sportster Forty Eight above looked just as good sitting still as it did rolling. In a super Canadian touch a Molson beer tap jockey shifter has been added.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-mustang-2-dn

Mustangs were at the show, not running down spectators (sorry, probably the last time I will reference this tired meme).

fitted-lifestyle-2016-mustang-dn

2016 Mustangs, dubbed the new s-chassis by Mike Garrett over at Speedhunters, have grown on me quite a bit. Look forward to seeing more of them at events, hopefully modified as tastefully as this.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-orange-miata-dn

Working towards the venue the cars only became more interesting.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-bagged-3-2-dt fitted-lifestyle-2016-soarer-dn fitted-lifestyle-2016-subaru-dnfitted-lifestyle-2016-subaru-forrester-dt

Only in fitted could you find a 2JZ equipped 240sx just hanging out in the parking lot without a care. Apparently this car is from London Ontario and recently took to the streets under Toyota power.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-2jz-240-dt

Immediately outside the venue there were cars that could have easily been in the show and just like the cars inside widebody conversions and fender flares were a plenty.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-widebody-civic-1-dtfitted-lifestyle-2016-widebody-civic-2-dt

Darren Singh’s CarbonSignal equipped G37 looked great out in the sun, and being able to take a few steps back from it and view it not behind stanchions like at Motorama was quite nice.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-widebody-370-1-dt

The silver on gunmetal comes together quite nicely under the sun.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-widebody-370-2-dt

A parking lot car I had never seen before was this black wide body Audi s6.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-audi-s6-flares-1-dn

Unlike the vast majority of the flares at the show these particular ones were molded, not riveted on. Victory Build did the work and they flow with the body quite nicely considering how wide they are.

fitted-lifestyle-2016-audi-s6-flares-1-dt

The wheels tucked under the flares are made by Ferrada, a company I must admit I’ve never actually heard of prior, but one that looks to be quality all the same.

Words wise I’ll call it here, but there’s a few more photos below.

WTF Friday: Pick Up The Tempo

0

As you all already know I’m a big lowrider fan, both traditional and non traditional. What I have not admitted to,  thus far, is the fact that I don’t whole heartedly dislike Ford Tempos.

Sure they were largely forgettable cars, with very few redeeming qualities, but in high school a fellow student had one that was primer grey, bagged, and bottle fed. From that point on I realized that one, damn near anything is cooler with bags, and nitrous and two with an altitude adjustment Tempos look significantly less revolting.

This Tempo,  that is currently for sale on ebay, addresses both of my somewhat guilty pleasures; odd ball lowriders and Ford Tempos.

escort-service-6escort-service-1

Purple flaked, and on wire wheels this Tempo isn’t a car that you drive if you want to blend in. And with a Velour interior it’s probably not a car you want to drive on a hot day, but it is pretty awesome none the less.

escort-service-8escort-service-5

I mean what is not to like about a car that has “Nutz” written in neon running through the dash,  and two 12s in the trunk?

escort-service-7escort-service-2

The car, which is an early 90s ‘euro’  build , apparently graced many a magazine page and a few covers before it was stored away for a whopping fifteen years. It resurfaced in 2013 where it found itself fittingly placed in a few Old School classes at events.

The current owner isn’t the builder, and he’s asking $6000 for the car.

Considering how much it probably cost to build in the 90s $6000 isn’t that crazy, but it is still a Tempo so the owner might be stuck with this one for a while.

An Open Letter To Car Show Trophy Hunters

58

Dear Trophy Hunter,

We know the show season has just begun and you are noticeably excited, but before you explode with jubilation we’d like to stop you for a second and address an incident from last year.

Do you remember? It happened at the show where you spent most of the day glued to your folding chair positioned beside your car. You grew agitated with each passing moment you were not judged, and when it was your time you made damn sure the judges were well aware of the fifth TV screen your car had, versus your competitors one.

Yes, we’re talking about that show.

The same show where upon not winning the trophy you had already awarded yourself mentally, you tried to keep your composure but the expression on your face and words muttered under breath betrayed you.

As you stomped off like a child we watched, and later when you went on a social media slandering the event, its competitors, and the ‘scene’ in general we watched that too.

awardsLetting loose an onslaught of complaints and personal attacks, alongside boisterous self promotion justifying why you deserve an award, makes you look incredibly immature, especially when you do it after every event.

Do you really think show organizers want to read complaints you made while they were still at the venue cleaning up? Do you think those who accepted their awards humbly want to read about how little you think of their cars?

Yeah, we’ve got to tell you, as a friend all of that behavior is getting pretty tiresome.

niagara_truck_and_tuner_expo_2013_trophiesSure, we all love appreciation for the cars we call our own, but the rest of us have realized that building a car for ourselves is a much more valuable endeavor and that appreciation comes in ways not limited to plastic cups.

All the time you spend obsessing over something to put on a shelf in your garage, or worse cart from show to show as some sort of mobile shrine to yourself, has blinded you to the true joys of being an enthusiast.

Did you happen to notice the small child that spent an extra long time looking at your car? Chances are they will remember your vehicle for years to come and it just might have set them down the path of becoming an enthusiast one day. You’d pick up on these kind of subtleties if you saw the forest beyond the trees, or that is the community beyond the awards. Building a car, truck or bike, should never be just about a trophy because honestly there are much cheaper past times to partake in if you just want to line your mantel or work bench with trinkets.

Witnessing your adult temper tantrums is exhausting, and your empty threats to retire and leave the scene fall on deaf ears because, thanks to your increasingly poor attitude, we wish you would.

But as much as events could do without you we want to let you know it isn’t too late to change. Instead of fixating on the prize at the end, focus on the journey, the experiences, and friends that come with building a car and being a real enthusiast. When you’re at the next event on your calendar take a look around at what everyone else is doing; swapping stories, laughing, catching up and genuinely enjoying themselves. Is missing all that really worth a trophy?

After all these years of chasing awards we know it might be hard to change your mind about the true purpose of events (TLDR: it’s about the people not the awards) but if you could at least try to see them differently this year that would be great.

Thanks,

Concerned Enthusiasts Everywhere

Theme Tuesdays: Engine Bays Of Fitted: 2011 – 2015

0

Fitted Lifestyle is an event known for, as the name implies, cars that employ a particular style of wheel fitment, that fitment is of course of the aggressive variety.

Though most of the cars at the show focus almost exclusively on fitting the widest wheels possible, there are a number of builds that also have time spent under the hood.

Swaps, boost, tucked, shaved, fitted has a bit of everything. This week, with Fitted just around the bend I’ve brought together a collection of some of the more noteworthy engine bays over the years.

Event Coverage: The 2016 CSCS Season Opener

0

Moneygang BBQ, rain. Cars and Coffee season kick off? More of the same. CSCS season opener? Snow.

April showers bring May flowers? Hardly the case this spring, but temperamental and unpredictable weather issues aside the Canadian Sport Compact Series had their first event of the 2016 season a week ago at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-14

Onterrible residents, well accustomed to rocky spring weather by this point, came out in considerable numbers to watch the further progression of the region’s premier time attack, drift and show and shine series.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-7cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-15

The Canadian Tire Motorsports park driver development track, which is traditionally quite challenging for drifters and time attack drivers alike, proved even more troublesome due to the wide temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-2cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-1The fact that the weather literally changed from session to session put people to the test. Combine that with first event jitters and you’ve got a recipe for an exciting day of racing.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-6Being the first event of the year people needed to set the tone. Top finishers from the season previous had to make their presence known, and up and comers had to let the kings know their crown was at risk.

As a result everyone was charging the course hard and shaking loose off season rust which meant off track excursions came with the territory.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-13

On the drift side of things the DDT track has always proven tricky to master. Taking place predominately on a banked portion of the course the smaller than usual competitive field had to deal with managing transitions and clipping points while fighting with the pull of gravity.

Brent Stratton piloted his green s14 into second, and Pat Cyr came out swinging with his AE86 taking home first place.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-drift-1 IMG_1574

Four years ago it was rare to see Pat competing at a CSCS racing event but his presence in the two previous years, along with a number of changes to the drift program in general, has really kicked the drift competition up a few notches.

On the show side of things flares and big wings are still overwhelmingly popular. In fact a quick scroll back up reveals that these two items in particular are seen just as, if not more, often on show cars than they are track cars.

I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but as with anything else results may vary and sometimes those striving to do something unique end up looking as though they are falling in line.

When it comes to thoughts and opinions people’s positions on RWB cars vary widely, however Toronto’s first RWB car is officially out and about. I’ve still yet to see this car in person but from what I’m told it isn’t disappointing in the least.

This car had a bit of an off track excursion as well which is essentially the christening process for track car. A little dirt ain’t hurt nobody this time but please don’t send me the bill if that carbon fiber goes up in a cloud of dust.

cscs-2016-season-opener-mosport-ta-9

As far as I know the s14.5 is another new addition to the show circuit this year. It’s pretty clean all around and one car I hope to see in person at this week’s Fitted Lifestyle event.

WTF Friday: Miaterati Update

0

For whatever reason last night I thought of the most recent (there’s been two) Maserati powered Mazda Miata project and decided to check up on its progress.

As a quick refresh this car —originally posted in January of 2015— is somewhat local to me and is being built with help from MT Motorsport in Richmond Hill. At last check things had just kicked off with this project and the owner has chosen a BMW transmission and rx8 rear end.

Now in the recent (undated) posts the stock motor has been pulled in order to mock-up fitment of the 4.2L Italian v8.

mazderati5

The Maserati motor and BMW transmission were then test fit into the waiting NB chassis.

mazderati3

The unit was then popped back out so some sub frame modifications (spacers) could be made that allowed for clearance between the motor and steering rack. While the motor and transmission were back out the owner fabricated mounts for the motor accessories, including air conditioning.

I suppose with a luxury motor you need all the trimmings.

mazderati6

mazderati7

In the most recent update the motor fit in the engine bay and the hood closed which means there would be nothing visually tipping you off about what lurks within.

mazderati2mazderati1

From that point there have been no further updates. Not sure if that’s because the project is now dead, the owner is taking a break, or what, but hopefully things pick up again soon because I’d really like to see someone take this idea through to the end.

The tumblog dedicated to this car is right here.

Not So Righteous

0

Friend, fitment king, and all around good dude Blain of Righteous Garage had the wheels yanked of his Q45 the evening of May 16th 2016.

While pulling the wheels the thieves also did a number on his door and body kit as it looks like they jacked it up by the door then the rocker due to the cars lack of ground clearance.

blain-5

blain-3blain-4blain-1blain-2

This situation is incredibly unfortunate but due to their size it’s highly unlikely that the person who stole these wheels will ever be able to put them to use. Even if they do put in the work to fit them a LOT of people know about the theft at this point, including reputable wheel building shops and media outlets so the second the car shows up anywhere alarm bells will sound.

The nitty-gritty on the wheels is as follows:

Stolen weds bazreia 19×11 19×12 as seen in the photos. $500 reward or $1000 if you can bring me who did it.

235/35 Minerva front tires 275/30 general tires.

Light scuffing around front outer lips. Missing one centre cap. Minor oxidation of clear coat over diamond cut.

If you have any info please contact Righteous Garage.

Theme Tuesdays: Recently Viewed – May 2016

3

This month’s recently viewed Theme Tuesday was triggered by a not so intentional name drop by Jay Leno in a recent video of Leno’s garage –hat tip to Gil from the Scraped Crusaders for noticing it– which is the first video in this list.

From there we go on, road, off road and to Japan to round out the post. Enjoy.

Event Coverage: Cars and Coffee Toronto – May 2016

0

Though I only went to two events last year, the Cars and Coffee Toronto meets –hosted at Engineered Automotive— were two of my favourite events of the year. The laid back atmosphere makes them a great family friendly venue and the cars that show up are more often than not quite diverse.

When the season opening event started making its rounds on Facebook I got excited when I saw the list of attendees climbing. It looked like there would be a lot of people at the event.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-may-2016-lineup

Unfortunately rain was in the forecast day of the event, and a lot of it. I had my hesitations before heading out the door but I’d already promised my son we’d be going to a car show Sunday, and Engineered Automotive was pretty on top of things announcing bright and early on Facebook that the event was rain or shine.

Though I don’t drink coffee I figured the worst thing that could happen was going on an extended drive with my son for a few Timbits and a little puddle jumping.

cars-and-coffee-toronto-may-2016-lancer-teeth

The parking lot ended up being a little fuller than one might expect given the weather, there were no exotics or convertibles in sight obviously, but there were interesting cars none the less.

One of the cars that had me curious was ‘Crazy’ Leo Urlichich’s new Race Lab Mitsubishi.

Speaking of stickers this GTI was rocking a “Prove it at the track or shut your damn mouth” sticker on the back bumper.

The wheel and tire set up, upgraded brakes, and Go Pro mount suggested that this car does actually see some track time.

This BRZ looks right at home on Desmond Regamaster Evos and made me wonder if I should renew my search for a set of those wheels. They are such a simple design and yet they work great on so many cars.

I had seen photos of the Civic above floating around instagram and Facebook before the event as I think it was completed the day before. Looks pretty good in person, the rear camber might be a bit much for some though.

Before I made my way inside I took a walk down to the group of second generation MR2s.

The flared example above sat on Enkei Kojin wheels, these wheels are less popular than their RPF-1s but in my opinion look just a nice.

The 18×9.5 sizing is a bit much for the MR2 in stock form, hence the addition of universal after-market flares.

Inside Engineered has a couple nice Fords right near the entrance, caught the whipple of a GT poking out from the rear compartment and the bay of a Cobra.

The 959 that was up on the hoist my last visit to the shop is back on the ground and theoretically in operating condition. It was parked in a pretty bad spot for photos so I didn’t spend too long taking pictures of it.

I did how ever take a few photos of this Rips racing R32, it too has been there since my last visit but looks to be in running condition.

It looks like a pretty serious build, and hopefully at the next Cars and Coffee (June 5th) it will be on the ground and maybe even running as I’d love to hear what it sounds like.

Motorcycle content on this site is pretty rare, that’s a fact, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like motorcycles. Nor does it mean that I don’t follow a few motorcycle channels, what it really means is that I know so little about motorcycles that I’m hesitant to post about them.

I know so little about two-wheel motorcycles (aside from the fact that many are awesome) the fact that I almost thought this Singer GP was a real motorcycle roughly the size of the highly coveted Yamaha YSR-80.

In my sub par defence artist Gianluca Ferrerini did a damn fine job transforming a vintage singer sewing machine into the frame of a small motorcycle. He even went so far as to make it look as though it should run with a components borrowed from here and there.

The attnetion to detail here is really quite stellar and I like the fact that he added stickers to make it look like an actual competitive racer and kept some nice wear on the components so that it looks as though it did a few laps on a very tiny track somewhere.

Even if though this creation doesn’t go ‘brap’ it’s a wicked conversation piece and easily one of the coolest model motorcycles I’ve ever seen.

More information about the bike can be found in two posts on Rocket Garage; here and here.
