Theme Tuesdays: Ten More Instagram Builds You Should Be Following

0

My most recent editorial titled “We’re Killing Automotive Media“, may have left some with the impression that I despise Instagram but that isn’t the case at all.

Instagram is great way to share and absorb a lot of media in a short period of time –I’d just prefer it were original content– additionally it’s a fantastic channel to discover new builders and their builds.

However due to the speed in which things come and go it is just as easy to forget about builds as it is to follow them. This means these ‘Instagram builds you should follow’ posts work in two ways; it introduces new builds to you, and gives me an easy place to reference in the future when I wonder what ever happened to…

@kamikazefc3s

There is not a ton of content in this space quite yet but I think this Neomotorsports sponsored FC RX7 is going to build into something really awesome really soon.

The goal here with this local build is a Global Time Attack competition car done on an average budget with a lot of hard work.

Paco’s Toyota Previa – @tofudriftvan

What’s not to like about a Toyota Previa that drifts? The ‘Hoonivan’ is a trip down the rabbit hole of unique drift platforms that also features pod cast snippets along the way.

I’ve been following this one ever since I featured it on a WTF Friday post last year if you like random burnouts you will like this feed.

Stephen Van Sleuwen’s e46 – @moneygangsteve

I touched on this one in the coverage of the Money Gang BBQ last weekend but Steve has gone ‘full titty’ this year with his e46. New turbo, new manifold, new angle kit, fiberglass roof, rear mounted radiator, and Vibrant everything.

This car should be a beast, and he just started on his over fenders.

Jason Bos’s Widebody Volkswagen Golf – @jb_maf

I initially caught wind of this build via @RighetousGarage who helped Jason put together his custom multi-piece Eneki RPF-1 wheels. This build has been going on for quite some time, and has a Stance Works counter part thread, but instagram is where I keep the most up to date.

In addition to the prerequisite Volkswagen owner attention to detail when it comes interior trim and hard lines he is also putting a pretty serious stereo in the car, which takes me back to days of cruising audio forums.

Chris Lee’s 1JZ Powered 1949 Ford F3 – @blasfamous_1jz

While documenting the Taylor’d Customs Motorama Or Bust build I kept tabs (as best I could) on the people interacting with the content. One person who could be counted on to consistently interact with any photos of the Dodge was Chris Lee.

Once I clicked through to his profile I could see why, Chris was building a unique hot rod of his own. From the unorthodox (for a hot rod) 1JZ power plant, obsessive attention to detail and awesome use of Ford Explorer wheels this truck is going to be awesome when it’s finished.

Tommy Reichelderfer’s Miata – @bossroadster

I discovered this build via Speedhunters and was instantly hooked on its originality. Similar to the hot rod esuqe Miata from Japan this car features a hot rod like front end. However it builds off that with a bare metal exterior and significantly widened metal rear arches.

It also has a Ford 302 (stroked to 331) under the hood that makes an almost dead even 432hp/437 at the crank. Finally it has a set of Supertrapp mufflers which is just rad as hell.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEUzdiCh3wn/?taken-by=bossroadster

Kevin’s Big Huge Turbo R32 – @chopshoptgsc

Some of you might remember the name Chopshop being linked to a wild Jetta Coupe build, that project has been pushed to the back of the shop in favour of Kevin’s ‘daily’ build that spun out of control.

After the turbo set up previously on the R gave up the ghost Kevin decided to go all in on this project in the pursuit of quadruple digit dyno numbers. Kevin simply does not do half measures, so this car should be a serious weapon when it’s done which should be just in time for this year’s Eurokracy Montreal show.

Tom Clark’s Mustang Pace Car and MK1 Golf – @sinisbuilt

Tom Clark’s Mustang pace car is hands down one of my favourite Mustangs ever built, and that was before he decided it needed to get a bit wider thanks to a combination of Mustang and Capri fenders and quarters.

Mustang progress isn’t posted quite as often on his instagram these days, but that’s only because he’s been busying himself with a super clean MK1 Golf that I believe he started out initally building for his wife.

At any rate it rocks Elipson wheels (which Tom has a knack for refinishing) bags, and a shaved bay featuring a very tidy diesel motor.

Richard Ruiter’s C10 (among other things) – @xvette

The first ‘Instagram builds you should be following’ post featured the work of the younger fabricator in the Ruiter family Brad, aka @scradley54, this time around I am urging you to check out the work of his father who clearly heavil influenced Brad.

His LS powered C10 project was originally intended to be a daily –not sure if that is still the case– and has already been featured in a Magazine unfinished. The Ruiter family’s ability to transform an engine bay into a work of art is literally second to none and its looking like this truck should be on the road sooner rather than later.

Mike Obrien’s Datsun 620 – @3d_magic_mike

Finally, The Roadster shop is responsible for some of the best pro touring builds around so when Anth at Build-Threads mentioned Mike Obrien’s build I had to check it out and instantly follow.

I mean a 1UZ powered Pro Toruing Datsun 620 that came together aided by small-scale 3d printed models? What is not to like about that?

Like all roadster shop builds this truck will handle as well as t looks and if you were to only follow one build out of the ten posted today then this should be it.

View this post on Instagram

Another big step finished this weekend, with the Datsun 620 cab and bed mounted to the new frame. After carefully cutting the measured section of bed to clear the high kick rear rail section of the new frame, everything came together perfect. I cut the rear bed sides to just fit around the tires at ride height for now, which looks kind of insane. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me get to this point so quickly, looking forward to more progress week by week. #mikebuildsadatsun #datsun #datsun620 #nissan #nissansunny #minitruck #custom #chassis #customchassis #frame #suspension #bellcrank #cantilever #pushrodsuspension #fab #fabricated #fabrication #jdm #drift #builtnotbought #engineering #mechanicalengineering #design #beastmode #shesafatty

WTF Friday: Keeping Things Civill

2

About a week ago on Facebook Craig Fenton dropped the photo below on the Stance Is Everything Facebook page.

Looking from my phone I was intrigued by what I saw in the picture and the idea of a wide body Cadillac so I asked to see more.

civill_7

When Craig responded with more pictures I realized I had been somewhat duped because despite the headlight, grill, and badging this car –named the Civill by its owner– was far from a Cadillac.
civill_1

As you can tell from above the car is a highly customized Civic done when cars like that were the norm in the show scene, years before aggressive fitment essentially took over.

civill_5

From the looks of things Craig, who is a body man, threw everything he could at the car. Widebody, shaved bay, tucked rad, air ride, rag top, custom interior, the works have been applied here.

civill_2civill_6 civill_3

Now, the car isn’t exactly my style, but it does remind me of the true creativity that came from the show seen in days gone by and makes me wonder how many cars of this nature are lurking in garages across the world waiting for the ‘scene’ to inevitably come full circle?

civill_4

Time will tell I suppose. You can check out more pictures of the ‘Civill’ via Craig’s instagram @bigpigpen

Event Coverage: Money Gang BBQ

2

If there’s one easy way to bring people together its the promise of good food –the cheaper/freer the better– and good times, and that’s exactly what Money Gang (a crew of East Ontario based friends who happen to drift) delivered on with their season opening BBQ.

The weather may not have fully cooperated, on and off showers happend through the duration, but the turnout as still quite good none the less, made up of great cars and better people.

money-gang-bbq-e30-1

The first car I noticed was this ‘diving board’ e30 sedan that cause me to immediately enter e30 nerd mode. As it turns out this 325 is the owner @jordandemetroff‘s daily driver with his track car being a m52 powered sedan.

money-gang-bbq-e30-2

Dumped on Borbet Type A’s this car, which was similar color to my old one brought pangs of regret over parting with my e30 that I have not felt in a while.

money-gang-bbq-devo

BMWs are seemingly the new s-chassis among the drift community with the parking lot playing host to a mini e36/e46 meet.

money-gang-bbq-steve-6

The most ridiculous of the roundell badged cars was Stephen Van Sleuwen’s (@moneygangsteve) Formula Drift Canada Competition car.

money-gang-bbq-steve-1

Steve took a working, driving, battle seasoned car and basically took it right down to its bones to build it all over again.

money-gang-bbq-steve-3

This year the car has received a larger turbo, new manifold, and the rad has been moved to the rear and plumbed with some of the largest braided AN lines I’ve ever seen.

money-gang-bbq-steve-4

GT Custom Exhausts’ Mike Catell has been doing a lot of the under hood fabrication work which means that everything looks as good as it functions.

money-gang-bbq-steve-5

Up front there’s also a 3SP angle kit that should help Steve drive even more aggressively (if that is at all possible) than he did last year.

Steve’s list of things to finish include a front bumper, and widened fenders and quarters, these should be pretty aggressive to match his Triple 9 Tech side skirts.

money-gang-bbq-skyline-1

Non BMW wise the parking lot was made up of quite a few Nissan’s including this Skyline, which is a perfect example of a good-looking driven car.

money-gang-bbq-ae86lineup-2

The Ae86 community was also well represented via Jover and Scott and as this grey SSR Longchamp booted example. As this car pulled up Gilbert of the Scraped Crusaders said something along the lines of ‘that’s one of the coolest street cars in Ontario’.

money-gang-bbq-ae86lineup

I didn’t even have to ask why because shortly after he arrived the owner @mitch8688 popped the hood revealing a very bright and very non Toyota Valve cover.

money-gang-bbq-f20-ae86-1

Under the hood is a Honda F22c (not f20 as I previously thought) with a fair-sized Holset HX35 turbo plunked beside it.

money-gang-bbq-f20-ae86-4money-gang-bbq-f20-ae86-2

Mike Catell’s work is under the hood of this car as well.

money-gang-bbq-garage-collective

Intimidating (not really) people from the back section was Martino, Liam, and Santi who brought out a heavy hitting Nissan trio.

money-gang-bbq-liam

After selling his Cefiro last year Liam bought this Skyline which was actually a Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Saloon car in 2010 or so. It used to look like this in full demo mode.

cockpitliamcarold2

Liam has a few plans for this car but right now he seems pretty content with having a great running car that’s a lot of fun.

money-gang-bbq-martino-1

Martino picked up this s15 last year and he too is enjoying driving a predictable, reliable car that can be thrashed on the track and still drive home comfortably.

money-gang-bbq-santi-2 money-gang-bbq-santi-4

Santi has had his s13 for a few years now but recently stepped way down in wheel size which actually looks pretty damn good and gives the car an entirely different attitude.

I’m really impressed with the fact that he’s subtly changed this car for the better every year while still managing to keep it clean and taking it out for a rip at Shannonvlle on occasion.

money-gang-bbq-santi-1

I ended up take off a little bit early from this one which means I missed a few cars (sorry guys) but here’s hoping that a season closer BBQ occurs at the shop because this one was a lot of fun and conveniently close to my house.

Remember everyone if you really want me at your event free food certainly helps!

Theme Tuesdays: Slammed Jeeps

0

Slammed Jeeps have peppered a few Theme Tuesdays here and there but today it’s time for them to take center stage. It might seem a little counterproductive to die-hard Jeep owners, but more than a few of their ranks think they look just as good on the ground as they do lifted.

Personally I’ve come across two different bagged examples in my travels and one AM General. If nothing else these slammed could-be off roaders are polarizing.

The Concours Touch With 3D Products Canada

0

Before 2015’s Importfest show, my car need a little help in the detailing department. Months prior I had used 3D Products HD Polish to get rid of a significant scratch in my door but the entire car needed a thorough once over before it hit the show floor.

So I turned to my friend Bryan Walroth of Concours Touch, who is the same person that helped keep my white 3 in tip-top shape after all the abuse I put it through.

True to form Bryan got my car looking fantastic and I snapped some photos along the way. However the photo set got lost in the shuffle of going to events, finding Project Why Wait, and tending for one year old.

I came across the photos in the middle of winter and held on to them until now because spring is in the air, which means spring cleaning is just around the corner.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-13d-products-canada-concours-touch-2

Admittedly I brought Bryan a pretty dirty car –not down right filthy– but certainly not the cleanest thing in the world, and far dirtier than I’d ever post on here.

So to hide my shame I jumped into taking photos after he’d already started.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-43d-products-canada-concours-touch-33d-products-canada-concours-touch-5

Ever the professional Bryan got right to work in the bay he uses from time to time at a local car wash facility, don’t worry none of the dirt filled coin operated brushes ever touched my paint.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-103d-products-canada-concours-touch-8

What did touch my paint however was practically the entire 3D Products line up; HD wash was used to take of the road grim accumulated from driving to and from work, as well as to shows all over Ontario.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-9

3D’s orange de-greaser made short work of the mosquito collage on my front bumper, and the brake dust remover restored the hard work I put in with 3D Products Metal polish earlier that year.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-11
3d-products-canada-concours-touch-73d-products-canada-concours-touch-6

Throughout the entire cleaning process Bryan used the tried and true two bucket washing method.

If for whatever reason you don’t already use the two bucket method I suggest you start. It seems like common sense to use one bucket for soapy water and once for rinse but when I first found out about it (part way through ownership of my first car) I had a eureka and face palm moment all at once.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-133d-products-canada-concours-touch-12

With the car clean and dry it was time for Bryan to use 3D’s combination polish and wax product called HD speed. This product is designed to remove moderate scratches and swirl marks (of which my car had many) in a short period of time.

Building on the work I put in with the HD polish Bryan really brought out the best in my seven-year old Metropolitan Grey Metallic paint. It could still use a real cut and polish down the line but that currently isn’t in the cards.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-14

Of course after all was said and done I had to take a few pictures of the car nice and clean and almost fittingly this photo shoot was cut short as storm clouds suddenly blew in and rain showered down from the heavens.

3d-products-canada-concours-touch-193d-products-canada-concours-touch-173d-products-canada-concours-touch-183d-products-canada-concours-touch-20

Looking back at these photos today I feel pretty guilty about how dirty the car currently is after winter.

While it would be easy enough for me to give Bryan a ring again this year and get him to get my car back to shape right quick but, he did give me a box of product that I really should learn to use.

Looks like I have a weekend of polish, elbow grease, and  beer in my future.

Throwback Thursday: Letter Kenny

0

I’m still on the fence about whether or not Throwback Thursday posts will appear here on the site with any regularity, but, I feel this one was warranted as Ken Wagan recently posted some updated photos of his project RX-7.

To spin the clock back a bit (or a lot to 2012) I first snapped some photos of his car at a Canadian Sport Compact Series event. Ken eventually saw these photos and reached out which was rare because at the time it was rare for drivers to become aware of the photos I took.

We exchanged messages with the hopes of an in person introduction soon and it took about three years before it actually happened, but such is life.

stage_four_rx7_2
mazda_rx7_track_rearmazda_rx7_track_motormazda_rx7_track_1

Ken’s car has always been very visually pleasing, which for a race car isn’t always the case, and if memory serves always performed pretty well.

So in true car guy fashion he took something that pretty much worked and completely re did it.

Over the years the car had been slowly transitioning from weekend warrior to full-blown single turbo 381whp track car, so Ken just sped the process up a bit (or a lot) bit by adding a cage and going all out on some home-built aero.

letterkenny2
letterkenny1letterkenny4letterkenny3

In addition to the aerodynamic voodoo he’s also got a second Rotary engine that he’s building for the car as well to pump up its power even more. I hope to cross paths with this car this summer, and maybe even make plans to infiltrate the Speed.Academy HQ.

Theme Tuesdays: Z31s

2

This week’s Theme Tuesday was a suggestion from ‘haha’ way back in 2014, I’m just now getting to it because I’m from Canada and I’m a little slow eh.

I don’t see many 300zxs, and fewer still z31s, so I don’t have any photos of my own to contribute but a few forum laps along with visits to a number of dependable haunts and I was able to scare up a few.

I know next to nothing about this chassis in particular so sorry for all of the info being pretty superficial. I have however provided links to the photographers page, source page, or owner’s build log where possible.

Project Why Wait: No Tricks in ’16, It’s Time To Build

5

As the temperature started rising here in Ontario so too did the frequency of questioning regarding Project ‘Why Wait’. As it turns out a lot of people were eagerly waiting for me to get started over the winter.

However for 2015 I was perfectly fine with the fact that, after a long search, I finally had a base to start from and a pretty awesome chassis to build upon. However that was then, this is now, and there’s no tricks in ’16, its time to build.

However, before we get to the exciting fabrication posts there’s plenty of prep work and tear down that needs to be done, including getting the cab off of the current frame.

sie-gmc-update-3-3

This is somewhat easier said than done considering that the truck, in stock form, is actually far too tall to make it into any of the bays at Taylor’d Customs.

A few weeks ago Blair and I came up with a quick summer build plan that involved me taking the truck apart outside the shop. Immediately (I’m talking hours) after we came up with this plan it started to snow leaving me to wait for a second spring thaw.

sie-gmc-update-3-7

sie-gmc-update-3-5

Yesterday the weather was finally good enough to work outside so I got to work pulling the front sheet metal off. Things started slow as I began carefully bagging nuts and bolts so I’d know where they went after word (this is my first rodeo after all), however about fifteen or so bolts in this kept happening:

sie-gmc-update-3-6

Not every bolt broke, but enough of them did for me to toss out the idea of reusing any of the original bolts. When the time comes to put everything back together I’ll likely pick up stainless bolts for the engine bay area and new bolts for everywhere else.

I did however keep enough original bolts hanging around to loosely zing things back together for future mock-ups.

sie-gmc-update-3-1sie-gmc-update-3-2

With some help here and there, including a big final push from Blair as my dinner bell was ringing at home, the front end of the truck was successfully separated from the cab and, for the most part, no major surprises were found.

Yes the cab has a few spots outside of the cab corner I knew it need that need to be addressed but that is largely par for the course when dealing with these trucks.

sie-gmc-update-3-11sie-gmc-update-3-12

It is still a very solid truck overall, and most of the things that should work, still do, including this pretty neat vent that opened up while I was in the cab looking for something else.

sie-gmc-update-3-4

We also noticed that the fuel that was in the system evaporated instead of turning to gunk so we might try to turn this motor over at some point and see what happens. I don’t plan on using the straight six in long run but that doesn’t mean that someone else couldn’t find a use for it.

sie-gmc-update-3-9

The next trip back to the shop will be in a couple of weeks, and at that point the goal is to get the cab off the truck and on to the waiting chassis so we can complete the fabrication. From there the chassis and a few components go out for sand blasting and coating before the cab goes back on and assembly can resume.

sie-gmc-update-3-14sie-gmc-update-3-10sie-gmc-update-3-13

In the meantime I’ve got a few junk yard runs to make for some later model front end parts, along with a few Performance Improvements orders to make. There’s already one shipment in my garage (the contents of which will be revealed in the next Performance In Motion Magazine) but there are oh so many more to come.

sie-gmc-update-3-15

It’s going to be an exciting summer!

WTF Friday: The Yodabaker

0

Cars and trucks with front and rear end swaps are no strangers to WTF Friday posts, one might even say that next to weird motor swaps they are in fact a staple.

Grafting the front end from one vehicle to another is always a risky gamble, and it just becomes even more of a toss-up the further apart the donor vehicles get from one another.

In the case of the ‘Yodabaker’ the middle of the truck is a 1978 Toyota Hilux, the front a 1950 Studabker, and the rear has parts of a ’61 Oldsmobile.

yodabaker1
After the body work was finished the truck was coated in yellow with yellow flames before being dubbed the Yodabaker and having everyone’s favourite little green Jedi painted on the tailgate.

yodabaker3yodabaker4
A show winner in the 90s the truck was parked for what looks to have been an extremely long time.

yodabaker5 yodabaker2

The a pillar rust says to me this is a lost cause but if you don’t happen to think so it is on eBay now with a bid of just over $1000 which I’d imagine might be the going price for the Studabaker front end components.

Throwback Thursday: Buckin’ Bronco

0

On instagram and Facebook I’ve been participating in a thing called #truckinthursday where, as the hashtag implies, I post trucks. Really, I don’t need a hashtag to post trucks but, its pretty well received so I’ll keep it going.

While digging in the crates for content I stumbled across an old favorite, this hammered third(?) generation Ford Bronco.

minitruck_bronco_2

I first became aware of the truck in around 2012 but didn’t see if the first time until 2013. Then, it was owned by Curtis Cox who built it and then drove it for a bit before putting it up for sale.

minitruck_bronco_3minitruck_bronco_1

I used to see the Kijij ad pop up now and I figured the truck was lost for good until it resurfaced last year, looking slightly different, at Northern Showdown.

northern-showdown-2015-ford-bronco

I have not seen any for sale ads since so one can assume the person above still has it, and here’s hoping it shows up to Northern Showdown this year (which is August 27th this year at the Country Heritage Park in Milton).
