Event Coverage: Vanfest 2015

0

Ah Vanfest, perhaps the only show I’ve been unable to attend a remarkable five years in a row. My lack of attendance has not been for lack of trying however, every year previous to this one Vanfest has fallen on the same weekend as a bachelor party, wedding, funeral, or some sort of other fixed previous obligation.

This year the show was scheduled for Father’s day weekend, so I used my father card to reserve one day of the weekend for my son Ash and I to check the show out.

Upon arrival I was not disappointed, greeting me at the entrance of the Springwater Conservation area was one of the highest street going single cab pick up trucks I have ever seen.

Following that was an almost overwhelming number of highly modified vans, vans done in a style I had only ever seen in extremely small doses, or read about online.

Though the Saturday is considered show day, and I’m sure judges were milling about somewhere, the vibe was more on par with a weekend long party than anything else. Everywhere I looked all I saw were people having good time in the general proximity of heavily customized vans and trucks.

Now vans might not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you want to take lifestyle Vanners really do live their passion. Many of these individuals have been into vans for twenty to thirty some odd years, and have been going to the same shows with the same people for almost that entire period of time.

The van community is tight-knit to say the least and boy are they dedicated to their niche.

Few things characterize a true custom van more than a wild mural and if I were to hazard a guess I would the hours invested in some of these paint jobs triples that invested in some of the entire builds I’ve seen at other shows.

vanfest-2015-van-plum-loco

vanfest-2015-van-timetraveller

The murals run the gamut of topics and influences, but most appeared to be in the realm of fantasy or paranormal.

The work on the Time Traveler for example immediately made me think of a character that would be in The Never Ending Story.

vanfest-2015-van-mural-3

vanfest-2015-van-mural-2

These two murals were probably examples of two owners very different ideas of the perfect weekend; an island oasis and a cruise above the clouds.

Can’t imagine what it’s like to drive around with a mural depicting illegal activity on the side of your van though…

vanfest-2015-merlin-1

vanfest-2015-merlin-2

vanfest-2015-van-mural

Very few of these murals were modern pieces either, but they still miraculously stood up to the hands of father time.

The Black Rose was originally built and painted in the early ’80s, but subject matter aside it looked like the paint could have been done a week ago.

vanfest-2015-van-glass-eagle-2

vanfest-2015-van-glass-eagle-3

I’m told this ’75 Dodge dubbed The Glass Eagle is one of the top show vans in the area and I don’t doubt that for a second. The doors opened all sorts of different directions, the body was largely custom and extensive air brush work ran all over the entire car.

There was even an etched rear window and a fitting glass case for the very detailed motor.

vanfest-2015-van-mean-machine-3

vanfest-2015-van-mean-machine

vanfest-2015-van-mean-machine-2

With their awkward engine bays I wouldn’t fault a lot of Vanners for leaving well enough alone under the hood, but several of these owners devoted some serious time to the motors.

The van above (dubbed the Outlaw II) was supercharged and could be seen running the strip on the Friday. Additionally I’ve come to learn that it also has two transmissions, not exactly sure how or why but I’d really like to find out.

vanfest-2015-van-rosie-5

vanfest-2015-van-rosie-1

vanfest-2015-van-rosie-2

While there were tons of Vans modified to levels far and beyond any Van I had ever seen, one that kept luring me back repeatedly was Rose Royce.

A more recent build, it reminded me a bit of the Astros I saw in high school filled with audio, the difference was while those may have had C4 tail lights they certainly didn’t have BMW headlights.

Inside, this van was a tribute to percussionists everywhere, and if you look really close at the photos you will notice that there are snare drums hanging from the roof in addition to the sticks worked into the HVAC and steering column controls.

vanfest-2015-van-ambulance-1

vanfest-2015-van-ambulance-2

I’m not sure if the Ford Econoline above was an actual Nebraska Ambulance at one point in its life, but if it wasn’t the owner sure did their due diligence ensuring that it looked the part.

Like the El Camino splits the difference between car and truck the Dodge A-100 does the same between truck and van.

This one also look’s like it splits the difference between street and strip, judging by the motor and wheel/tire set-up.

vanfest-2015-ash-2

vanfest-2015-ash-3

After being a good sport about looking at vans Ash decided he had spent long enough in the stroller and demanded out.

As soon as his feet hit ground he made way towards the part of the show where there was a higher ratio of truck to van, than van to truck.

I was pretty familiar with many of the trucks but there were a few I had never seen before, one of those was the Smallwood Custom paint Ford F-100.

The clear coated patina’d body looked amazing over the low offset Astro Supremes and under the louvered hood there’s an LS motor that’s just about ready to fire up.

The ’60s C10 below was another truck I’d never seen before, and I’m told Vanfest 2015 was the first show it has ever been to.

Working my way back into familiar territory I had to take a couple snaps of Rob’s International because no matter how many times I see it it’s simply impossible to get tired of this truck.

vanfest-2015-international

And of course I had to indulge my inner s-10/Sonoma/Blazer/Jimmy fanboy with a few pictures of the s10s in attendance, heck I even caught Jeff moving a few rocks around with his rear bumper.

One the classic side of things this ’49 Chevy 5-window was so well detailed that I actually forgot to take any photos of the entire thing.

This doesn’t happen often but I’m sure you’ll agree the details were totally worth taking in.

The Nissan 720 that came from Mississippi for Northern Showdown was back again and looking as polished as ever.

This truck is seriously awesome and no doubt something that the guys over at The Coalition of OG MiniTruckin would appreciate.

Speaking of OG’s, Geoff brought out his bagged, tilt bed, t-topped Mazda and parked it beside a female owned Toyota.

And speaking of Jeff’s, when not doing absolutely epic burnouts Jeff used his truck to transport people to and fro.

As Ash continued to snake his way through the trucks I tried my best to snap as many photos as possible, but keeping a small child from wandering off into the wilderness while taking photos is a little challenging so I missed a few of the vehicles in attendance.

I’m told it also ran the drag strip Friday which means sometime in the near future I am going to have to move mountains and make a proper weekend of everything that is Vanfest because clearly I still managed to miss out!

Theme Tuesdays: Cars With Mouths – 4

1

The theme I didn’t expect to make it past round one, lives on into a fourth rendition. Some of you might say this theme is getting a little long in the tooth (hyuk hyuk) but cars with mouths and teeth seem to pass through my various social media timelines at least once a week.

I wonder how many examples there are around the globe, and if you can just hop on eBay and buy a universal fit set of teeth and eyes?

WTF Friday: Ronin

2

A few months (or maybe a year ago) GrinderTV posted a shot of a very interesting, very low, Suzuki Samurai.

After sharing the photo on the Stance Is Everything Facebook page I regretfully completely forgot about the truck (automotive ADD strikes again).

However about a week or so ago Jason Langley, aka Jason Bacon, aka Bacon media, shared a link to a feature on that very same Samurai.

grinder

At first glance things like the Cummins 4bt motor swap (the second Cummins motor to appear in a WTF Friday post this month),  the body drop and vette wheels, immediately draw your attention but something I managed to completely miss the first time I saw the truck was that it has grown in size.

It’s now 5″ longer and a whopping 17″ wider than it left the factory.

american-samurai-2

american-samurai-1

Inside the dash is curiously made up of 1″ Cedar planks and what look to be home renovation surplus materials.

american-samurai-4

american-samurai-3

The truck is bagged, obviously, but it uses a (40-cubic-foot) reserve nitrogen tank that feeds a converted fire extinguisher tank. The system is entirely manual so it can be operated without the truck running.

american-samurai-7

Oh and just because he was familiar with right hand drive from his previous Skyline experience the builder converted the truck to RHD.

Event Coverage: 519 Meets – 6/21/2015

1

Meets here in Toronto (and the surrounding area) have been in a bit of a troubled state lately. Increasingly immature behaviour has led to local police departments breaking up any sort of gathering in short order.

Not discouraged by recent events 519 Meets has committed to organizing several respectful, well run, casual meets free of debauchery and chaos.

As the name suggests their first meet of 2015 was held in Kitchener last Sunday, and I’m told that in total over 500 cars were in attendance with tomfoolery kept at a minimum.

Gray Schilling of Still Steezy was there to snap a few photos, and once again has kindly contributed them to the site.

Theme Tuesdays: Ontario Transformation Tuesday

0

The last before and after GTA/Ontario Theme Tuesday (renamed Transformation Tuesday to keep up with the Jones’) was in 2012 and despite its fairly positive reception I’ve yet to do another until today.

I often allude to individual’s cars changing significantly in descriptions below the photos, but today I’ll post the before and afters back to back to really show the amount of change.

Aidan’s IS300

During Aidan’s cars down time a few things changed, most notably his wheels and interior (that I don’t have pics of) but he also changed some suspension bits in order to get lower and have a bit more camber. Luxury Abstract Pillars also found their way to the doors.

At the time of Pat’s feature here on the site the car was aesthetically, and somewhat mechanically, finished but missing a power plant and a few necessary go fast bits. He finished it with the factory FA20 later that same year (2013) but this year he ditched that motor for reliable 2JZ power.

He also reworked the entire chassis to make it quite a bit more drift capable.

Prove It At The Track: Christian’s 300C SRT8

0

At last year’s Canadian Sport Compact Series season opener one car on the road course caught my attention and held it. However it wasn’t the oracle colour changing halos, or the fact that it was a big fish in a small pond that initially drew my eye, what really had me looking was a brief glimpse of a familiar logo as it roared past the straight away.

On the cars next lap I paid closer attention and sure enough there on the back quarter was the Air Lift Performance logo.

Someone locally was doing what many thought infeasible, or simply impossible. Tracking on air.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-1

Day in and day out people make unsubstantiated claims that air ride belongs nowhere near the track, and anyone that thinks otherwise has simply drank a significant amount of marketing Kool Aid.

However modern air suspension has progressed exponentially over the past few years and performance oriented kits, such as Air Lift’s, share many similarities with your more traditional performance coil over. Both have damping and camber adjustment, as well as adjustable bodies and really, save for the air spring, they are essentially identical.

While Christian has done a good job of silencing keyboard mechanics, simply by repeatedly driving his car on the track, his choice to run air suspension on his 300c SRT8 wasn’t done just to silence nay sayers.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-16

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-14

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-18

Christian owns CJR PERFORMANCE a local performance shop specializing in Mopars, and he is a firm believer of the run what you sell philosophy and there’s no way he would have felt comfortable selling a product with Drive It, Show It, Track It on the box unless he did exactly that him self.

Tasked with the job of keeping a large car planted, and competitive Christian reports that the Air Lift set up –complimented by Hotchkiss sway bars and upgraded end links– has done a tremendous job and he wouldn’t hesitate for a second putting it up against the other coil over options available for the platform.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-13

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-8

In his first year as a road course competitor (previously Christian terrorized the drag strip) he placed fourth over all in the Canadian Sport Compact Series Super Street Rear Wheel Drive class.

No small feat considering his competition consists of some very fast, very seasoned competitors.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-11

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-10

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-9

To keep up with the lighter cars in his class Christian couldn’t rely on suspension alone, so work was done under the hood as well.

The stock block has been retained but the factory heads are history, with Thitek Craig Ported Heads with titanium retainers taking their place. A Bill Briggs cam also adds to this cars get up and go while giving it a significantly angry idle note. The stock intake manifold has been ported, and a 90mm throttle body has also been thrown into the mix.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-3

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-6

A four-inch cold air intake supplies the O2, while the growl mentioned in the opening paragraph comes from Kooks long tube headers and a GTHAUS Exhaust. For the times this car does hop back on the quarter-mile a Zex nitrous system remains.

The automatic transmission has been beefed up for track duty with a 4200 high stall Paramount Performance Torque Converter and an upgraded Challenger 3.91 rear differential puts power to the ground.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-19

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-5

Footwork is provided by Rohana, another brand Christian sells, and this year he’s putting their R2 flow formed wheels to the test.

Wrapped around the anodized red hoops are 285/35 and Toyo R88 tires, behind the Rohnanas are SRT8 Brembro brakes.

jumpstart-auto-air-lift-performance-re

While not your typical road course car by any stretch of the imagination Christian maintains that the car does a great job of splitting duty between show car, track car and all around weekend toy while maintaining the creature comforts Chrysler shipped it with.

They say you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but Christian seems to be doing a damn fine job of having it all.

WTF Friday: Another Turbonique Kart Has Been Found

1

Those of you who have been reading since damn near day one know that I’ve got a bit of an obsession with Turbonique Rocket Karts.

Those of you who might not be as familiar with my history on the karts here’s the Coles Notes: A few years ago I saw a vintage Go Kart at a local parking lot meet with two funny looking giant golf ball like things hanging off the back.

300 pounds of thrust...

Turns out those two odd pods were Turbonique Rocket motors that were capable of propelling the fox kart from 0 to 150mph in 4 seconds before becoming uncontrollable.

Due to the fact that they were wildly unpredictable (read: dangerous) very few of them still exist today, but they do seem to pop up in quite random locales. Like say a barn in Calgary Alberta.

turboniquebarnfind1

The story around this one reads as follows:

The kart was purchased by a local car dealership and was intended to be run as advertising. No one at the dealership had the balls to drive it so I got elected. It was advertised on a radio show for three weeks prior to a drag race in the summer of 1967. Exact date forgotten, but may be able to figure it out with time. We had the cart fueled and ready to go to the line, I had my fire suit on, and a race official came to me and said “last minute ruling by NHRA that we can’t run rocket cars due to insurance reasons.” They then announced it to the crowd. Total BS of course.

They padded the crowd wanting to see the rocket powered go cart and always knew they couldn’t let us run. I said “It’s fueled up with volatile fuel, can we run after the race?” They granted that and I made a single run after the crowd left and the lights were still set up. Only witnesses were the drivers who had raced that day. That was the only “official” run.

I drove it on a blocked off street a week earlier just to make sure it worked before we went to the race. So a partial run and a full run, me driving, were the only times it was lit up

The kart has been mothballed ever since where it was recently found fully complete save for the battery.

turboniquebarnfind2

In the same thread there’s also a bit more information about why these things were outlawed so swiftly, apparently if you got off the throttle then got back on it you created a bomb.

Yeah, scary stuff totally worth obsessing over.

My previous rocket Karts posts are here and here.

Event Coverage: Honda Indy Toronto 2015

1

The Honda Indy is a Motorsports staple here in Toronto, because no other event brings racing right into the heart of the city. While I’ve never had a bad time at the Indy it had been a few years since I had attended and quite frankly I was long over due.

This year I was fortunate enough to get an all access media pass thanks to SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) as part of their #GreatWhiteLights campaign.

Super excited about the opportunity to get as close as safely possible to the action I wasn’t going to let a gloomy forecast spoil the fun, so I threw an extra pair of socks in my bag, grabbed my gear and headed out for a full day of high octane action.

Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered By Mazda

The Cooper Tires USF2000 series is the starting point of the Road to Indy series, and since the drivers have everything to prove this series is really exciting to watch.

These drivers also had arguably the roughest go of any racers on Sunday, with the rain being relentless all throughout their second race of the weekend. After a yellow flag filled race Nico Jamin ended up atop the podium.

The rain did begin to lighten up slightly as the race went on, but not before a number of caution laps

Pro Mazda

Surprisingly for the Pro Mazda (the second stop in the Road to Indy) race things dried out briefly, which gave myself and the thousands of fans in attendance a chance to take off our parkas and enjoy the first signs of afternoon sun.

It also meant that the drivers could better push the limits of the tack.

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada

The reprieve from the rain was short lasted, as mother nature decided once again to coat the track in water for the #GT3Can series.

With lots of local drivers making up much of the field this class had the crowd out of their seats.

Stadium Super Trucks

I may not have posted them here much before, but it shouldn’t come of much of a surprise that I’m a big fan of Stadium Super Trucks. I mean big trucks that are capable of doing just about anything? What’s not to like?

After watching these trucks race in person I’m about to go dig my Tamiya Stadium Thunder R/C truck out of the closet, convert it to brushless and have a blast!

The Main Event

As if by some sort of miracle the final race of the day was rain free, and 21 of 23 drivers managed to cross the finish line at the end of the hour and 38 minute race.

For this race I bounced between my usual two shooting spots up above and a third one on the opposite end of the track to try and get the best coverage I could.

Thanks once again to SYLVANIYA zXe (available at Canadian Tire) for the media pass to the event. The next event I will be at on behalf of that #GreatWhiteLights campaign is Importfest followed up shorty after that by the Formula Drift Canada World round!

Theme Tuesdays: Chameleon Finishes

3

Do you remember the first time you saw a Chameleon finish? Twelve or so years ago –also known as flip flop paint jobs at that time– they were brand spakin’ new and very seldom seen.

Then it got to a point where you couldn’t go to a show without seeing some version of the multicolored, fairly expensive paint.

Now things have normalized again to where you don’t see them all the time, and the ones you do see are typically done pretty damn well be it dip, wrap, or traditional paint.

I’ve always been a fan of the finish but it certainly doesn’t work on ever car, however I think it works pretty damn well on the cars below.

I should have taken more photos of this truck...
Wind the clock back to SEMA 2012.. loved this truck

Event Coverage: 2015 Niagara Tuner And Truck Expo

0

The Niagara Tuner and Truck Expo is a show that virtually needs no introduction here on Stance Is Everything because it’s one the site has been sponsoring and covering since its second year.

As one of relatively few all-encompassing shows in the area, it continues to get better year after year, thanks in part to an organizational staff that is focused on meeting competitor, spectator, and sponsor needs.

This year –unlike the past two– the event was blessed with a great forecast all day long. People have always come to this show despite inclement weather but with not a cloud in sight to dampen the mood it looks like it was a great event.

I unfortunately wasn’t able to attend due to prior engagements placing me in London Ontario, so Gray Schilling, Brandon McDow, and Kurt Albert, aka the crew at StillSteezy.com have graciously contributed their coverage to the site.

The three of them have an acute eye for detail and clutter free, artistic, shots so their work is always welcome here.
