Theme Tuesdays: Lettin’ the sparks fly

8

One of the hardest things I have ever tried to do is explain to friends and co workers who are not really into cars is why exactly I, and people like me, enjoy seeing a low vehicle leave a trail of sparks in it’s wake while traveling at high speed.

Of course to a lot of rational people this act is counter productive and downright dangerous and that’s probably why I like it.

Life is short right?

Perhaps one of the most famous dragging pics around
I figure there would be hell to pay if I left out Rusty
Been awhile since I have checked what's up with the slamburglars
Another from the first pictures with attitude Theme Tuesday
I like a lot of what's going on with this truck, sparks are just a bonus
It's been awhile since I have been in a truck while dragging, someone take me for a cruise
In a perfect world this would have eventually been me
Rob's Burban from the last readers rides
Heaven?
Beautiful.
O.G. Lowrider family laying it down
Lower quality pic than I would normally run but god damn
I need more lowrider meets in my life, should be fixing that soon
Another angle still dope
Benz shootin
End things off with the photo that inspired this, my friend Matt dragging his Ranger

I am in desperate need of more pics of cars/trucks throwing sparks so if you know where I can find them let me know 🙂

Featured Ride: Tim’s Wrx

8

Normally the features on this site are written in more of a magazine style tone and not the same personal  tone the rest of the posts are written in, however in regards to this car and it’s owner I felt a more personal approach was justified.

In the short time I have known Tim (the owner and builder of today’s Subaru) I have come to learn a few things about him.

He’s a talented do it yourself mechanic, a Batman fanatic, a proud father, and one heck of a nice guy.

The first time I saw Tim’s car was at the 2009 Tuners Against Street Racing Charity Show and Shine where it’s unique finish made it stand out instantly from the rest of the cars at the show.

While I had seen a few cars with similar paint applications prior to Tim’s none of them looked quite like his, it’s actually smoother than you would expect and applied so well that I was shocked to learn it came from a spray can.

It also shimmers ever so slightly in the right light and isn’t being used to hide atrocious body work, Tim painted the car this way because he wanted the car to have a sinister look reminiscent of The Tumbler and not because he was looking to cut corners.

In 2009 the car was plated  ‘BRCE WANE‘ and it was actually the custom plates that helped me identify him because he was close by the car wearing a Batman shirt. As I was clearly gawking at this point I took a second  to introduce myself and let him know how much I liked his car.

During that first conversation I could instantly tell he was the kind of car guy everyone likes to meet: humble, knowledgeable, down to earth, and most important of all, friendly.

Tim isn’t overly concerned with any of the politics behind car shows, awards, or internet fame, he simply has a passion for automobiles that he likes to share with other enthusiasts. This passion is  immediately apparent if you have ever read one of his build threads on NASIOC.

You see Tim isn’t the type of person to outsource a single thing on his car without knowing exactly what needs to be done and how it is supposed to be done and he isn’t afraid to learn by doing and document his experiences for others to learn from.

In fact before installing the 9-piece WRC wide body kit from Fourstar Motorsports that is currently on the car Tim came  incredibly close to completing the daunting task of designing and fabricating a wide body kit in his garage from scratch.

While that feat is incredible in it’s own right it isn’t anywhere near the end of custom modification Tim  has done to his Subaru.

Under the hood of this car is further example his fabrication skills. You may have already noticed from the photo above that the engine bay looks incredibly clean and uncluttered.

This is because in addition to removing components deemed unnecessary and performing a wire tuck Tim fabricated completely removable fiberglass covers for both sides of the engine bay.

The end result of what was essentially a winter long project is simply stunning engine compartment.

The only way to truly compliment the unique exterior of this car was with an equally unique interior and for that Tim chose to wrap his seats in ‘autumn’ colored Katzkin leather.

This burnt orange color is hard to accurately capture in  photographs but in my opinion (and obviously Tims) it’s the perfect color to contrast the  dark exterior and also does  an excellent job of tying in his recently finished classic truck bed inspired  trunk setup.

While I could easily continue to go on and on about how much I love this car and respect the amount of work the owner has put into it I feel the best way to really  appreciate this car without seeing it in person isn’t  by reading a modification list but by reading through any of his extremely detailed build threads.

This first one I recommend reading would be this thread which chronicles the modifications done to the exterior of this car, and the second would be this more recent one detailing the modifications both visually and mechanically under the hood.

Both threads are interesting, captivating, and inspiring and if by the time you are done reading them you still don’t feel like working on your car then perhaps maybe a trip over to  BatBerryBlog.com where Tim is documenting his build of a Tim Burton Batmobile will do the trick.

Don’t worry I full intend to feature on that when it’s complete.

WTF Friday: Swangin’

2

Going to let this one go a little early this week given the circumstances (Cuba internet is unreliable): Swing up doors are a bit of a touchy subject nowadays.

They were quite popular for awhile but of late have dropped off to the point where most people rocking them currently just can’t be bothered to swap them back.

Personally I judge swing up doors on a case by case basis. For a daily they are probably not the best choice but they do suit some of the more extravagant show builds that are around.

Sadly for every one car that looks good with vertical doors there are about 10 that do not. The owners of these two trucks below decided to take a bit of a different approach to swing up doors and I will let you be the judge of whether it looks good or bad.

This is quite honestly the first time I have ever seen this much door swing up
This looks a little crazy with just the C pillars staying stationary
I would be lying if I said I didn't worry about this trucks structural integrity

Getting into and out of the second truck seems like more than a one person job, but what do I know….

Site Updates

Yep, still in Cuba I will be back sometime Sunday night, and I’ll answer emails/catch up on orders Monday morning.

Flashback Fridays

Been thinking lately of doing a traditional Hot Rod Theme Tuesday, similar to this one on Ford High Boys but open to all makes instead of Ford.

Rear fitment is fairly fat and flush actually...

I don’t know though since the first one got zero comments though. Waddya say now?

Theme Thursdays: Ex Soviet/Russian rides

9

Once again I have Ollie to thank for submitting the content for this weeks Theme Tuesday. Normally I would add a few cars from my own collection to whatever he sends but this week I am on vacation so it’s 100% Ollie’s pics.

I’ve posted a few Russian and Soviet cars before but I have not really looked into them too hard so this is a good switch up of the norm.

Start things off with a Trabant with some Patina
Mesh wheels work on everything...
Exceptionally clean Lada
and another
Polish based Trabant
Ollie digs the eyelids on this car and I have to agree they are very fitting
Nice laid, plaid interior nice touch
Lada with a little from here and a little from there
The last Wartburg I posted had a Subaru motor swapped in it
This cars got just a little bit of motor sport flare to it
Of the cars Ollie sent this Trabant estate was my absolute favorite
It's small like a mini, but a wagon like... well a wagon
Ironically he sent this car first, and I put it last

Sorry for the delay on this one. The internet room here flooded. Go figure…

WTF Friday: Mixed Race

3

I can honestly say this isn’t a swap I ever expected to come across. While  I’ve seen a handful of Japanese power plants in American cars (and vice versa) I never expected to see one in a traditionally styled high boy roadster. However Solo from Go with Solo changed that with his blog post yesterday.

He  spotted this bright yellow American/Japanese union at the recent Nashville nationals and while incredibly unorthodox the motor actually seems right at home.

A little research tells me the car was built by Nissan employee Jack Taylor in 2008 for Sema, Jack was obviously a fan of classic high boys because motor aside this car looks very traditional.

Pretty unassuming little Ford
Until you look inside

I was able to find a little bit more info on the car in a for sale post (from 2008) as well:

1932 Ford Highboy power by a Nissan 300ZX 3.0 DOHC EFI V6 for sale in Tennessee. The Nissan engine develops 240 horsepower. Transmission is a ZX 5 speed manual gearbox. Other features include ZX manifolds, stainless bullet mufflers, Jet-Hot coated pipes and Walker Radiator. Frame is an American Stamping Company ’32 rails, boxed and pinched with custom cross members. Front suspension – custom tubular un-equal length A-arm IFS, polished forged aluminum ZX spindles, hubs, and brake calipers and 240SX steering rack narrowed. Rear suspension – custom tubular 5-link IRS, ZX differential with polished ZX axles, hubs, and brake calipers.

The Body paint is Sikkens single stage custom mix “yellow submarine”, Downs ’32 Ford Roadster Body, Rootlieb three-piece hood, custom hinge assembly, Custom polished aluminum grill, MG-B MG Midget windshield posts, frame, and glass. Interior is a custom bench design with gray leather and wool carpet.

American Racing Torq-Thrusts – 17 inch x 7 inch up front and 20 inch x 10 inch on the rear. B F Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2, 195/40/17 front and 295/45/20 rear.

I’m curious about how this car sounds and whether hearing it pull up would be a good indicator of what’s going on under the hood.

Site Updates

Tomorrow afternoon I fly off to Cuba so I will be unfortunately missing what might be one of the biggest shows of the year, Import Expo. However enjoying some R&R in Cuba so I am sure I will quickly forget about it.

I’ve been pretty lately with this site, work, and working on a new BMX edit, that a week of hanging out and doing nothing in the sun with an adult beverage in my hand seems like an awesome time.

There will still be posts next week just not as many as usual. I have them written so if all goes to plan new content should be up Monday, Tuesday, and Friday of next week.

Already got a couple photo shoots in the works for when I get back too…

Flashback Friday

Matt (who owns the recently featured s2000) has been putting some promotion behind his show ,Tuners Against Street Racing, which takes place August 28th 2011, so here is a look back at the 2010 show.

Seen this car a lot this year

I am not sure if I’ll make it out to T.A.S.R. this year as it’s the day after Importfest and who knows what I will be getting up to that night but if I don’t go I should be able to find someone who can help out with coverage.

Hopefully I get to see some of those crazy Cuban cars when I am gone…

Event Coverage: CSCS round II: Part 2

1

Here’s the follow up to yesterdays coverage including all of the track shots. The venue switch brought out a number of cars and one of the cars that had the biggest hype around it was the Nextmod/APH Evo which made it’s debut on Sunday.

On the drift side of track events the cars were run in the same challenging configuration as DMCC which made for a pretty eventful top 16. The speed people carried into the first turn varied quite a bit which made the tandems pretty interesting.

As always I wandered around the pics for awhile, snapped some drift shots, and tried my hand at more panning shots.

Paddock/Pits

People were pretty busy in the pits at Mosport, mostly trying to figure out ways to keep their cars from over heating.

Cars ready to go out on the track, not sure what class this is however
Sasha Anis was out with his Castrol Edge sponsored Hyundai Genesis
I never actually saw Pete run his hatch but he was out in another teal one
Pat Cyr had his street car out, I think he ran practice while I was sleeping
Amanda Carlton also brought her car out, but I didn't catch her driving either
Rounding out the people I didn't see run was Mr. Fiddy
Hood less Chris
Looks like Cody picked up a few sponsors since the last CSCS
Got a little love tap in the top 8, fixed it with zipties
Looks like Chris is no longer the only competing e30

Time attack

A lot of people like the course at Mosport and it showed because they had a lot of cars to get run in a relatively short amount of time.

Defcon Racing ek sponsored by optionjdm
RSX-7 tearing up the road course
One of the more unorthodox track cars you will see
Sasha rippin'

Drift

Ryan Stock is part of the ever growing Sailun team
The man who pilots this car is also on team Sailun
Read a build on this the other day, pretty interesting
Sailun trade you this photo in high res for some used but decent 215/45/17s for my stock wheels 😛
Lots of cars missing panels, was pretty damn hot
Cody's car pre bump influences surgery
Liam killin' it as per usual
First time I'd seen Jesse compete in his redone drop
Jesse seemed to have some fans where I was sitting too
He also should have got extra points for the steezy bucket
Every event I go to Chris figures out a way to cover me in hay, dirt, or dust everything you see in this pic floated over into the crowd
Anthony and Cody kept their tandems close enough for me to get them both in one shot
This car was super clean, even more so for a drifter

The Evo

Nextmod and Advance Powerhouse decided to debut their new track car at CSCS round 2 which is a completely gutted and redone Evolution 9 MR. I don’t have the full specs on the car but I heard it dynoed around 500hp and it looked pretty quick out there on the track.

A lot of late nights went into getting this car ready for Sunday
I read someone online call this a show car... lol
While it looks good it's definitely made for the track
Domo rockin' the passenger seat
I took a lot of panning shots of the car and this was the only one that turned out, more next round

CSCS continues August 21s back at Cayuga, see you there.

Event Coverage: CSCS 2011 Round II: Part 1

13

I’m not sure what kind of deal with the devil Chris and the organizers of CSCS made between last season and this in regards to weather but we are now two events deep in the CSCS calendar and the weather has been outstanding.

Actually outstanding isn’t an accurate description of the weather on Sunday, dehydrating might be better, or perhaps sun burn inducing, or maybe even heat stroke administering. You get the idea it was damn hot.

Wrath of the sun aside the CSCS crew managed to pull off another action packed event for sport compact fans in Ontario this time for the first ever time at Mosport in Bomanville. Having this event East of Toronto brought out a lot of people who don’t normally make it to CSCS which was great because new faces are always welcome.

Domestics

The lack of a drag strip at Mosport limited some of the more serious track equipped domestics but the addition of a mobile dyno brought out a couple different ones.

I was going to join the 905 Rides / Division R cruise up to CSCS but having ridden all day before sleep seemed like a better option
The large URL sticker from the Stance Is Everything store is in this shot three times, too sick.
This car must be up near Bomanville because the only time I seem to see it is when I am east of the city
Fairly sure this guy just came out to use the dyno, that could have been another Camarao too though
The airbrushing on the side of this Cavalier show car was pretty awesome
In addition to having that super charger under the hood it had two bottles of nitrous in the back which I heard a guy tell his girlfriend was 'nawss'

Subaru

Clean executed Subaru
Kevin and the now familiar to all of you Varis STI
Gill leading the Scraped Crusaders into the infield, hover craft status

Honda

A couple of the usual suspects but a few which I have never seen before near the end. Including a very eye pleasing first generation Civic.

Don't think I've come across this build before, very clean, sits nice too
Brad aired out in the grass
White cars every where
This s200 was in front of the Option JDM booth which had it's own sound system and a guy rapping (kind of)
This generation of Civic is hit or miss for me but this one is most def hit
My favorite Honda of the show had to be this Civic, unbelievably clean for any Civic, stupid clean for it's age
Completely immaculate underneath the hood as well, as was the interior

Nissan/Infiniti

Too fast motors brought out there promo car, not sure about the new lip additions, in my opinion the one CF lip would look better
Gone wide
Pretty sure he probably carried some wheels and tires on the way to the event
I think the last time I saw this car it looked a little different, but all I can remember is that plate
These should come off the lot like this
Super poking out of the hood
Black on red looks killer and I would be interested to see it on a different style of wheel

Mazda

Ryan's car reminds me a lot of mine as those DAI's are similar style to the A-techs I had
A couple Toronto Mazda 3 members were out actually
Mike grabbed some Stance Is Everything stickers to complete that back window of his 😀
and he recently took home best Mazda and best wheels at a previous event
You know you are suffering heat stroke when you don't realize there was a model in your picture until you got home and edited
This FC was parked diagonally across from me, clean build

VW/Audi

The Volkswagens and Audis at this rounds CSCS were simply incredible, all of the four door golfs were extremely well executed and the two bagged ones laid out very nice.

This car has always been a favorite of mine as it's very clean and has that no tuck, no gap, no poke fitment going on
Rotiforms are starting to pop up around here, which is cool
The fitment on the rear of this car is money
Curious how much trial and error it took to get that perfect
When I first saw this car there was a crowd around it so I made sure to come back and get a shot with no one around simply gorgeous on those teal Work VS-XX wheels
The color scheme carried through into the bay
I've been in contact with the owner of this car since CSCS and I should have more pics of it in August 😀

Track shots will be coming your way tomorrow, stay tuned sports fans.

Theme Tuesdays: Waterfest 17 favorites

13

Waterfest was this weekend if you didn’t now (I am sure most of you did) and while I have delusions of grandeur that one day I will have budget (and time) to travel to more events across the border it has yet to happen.

So like I did for Wekfest 2011 I decided to live vicariously through other photographers and post my personal favorites of the photos I have seen so far from Waterfest 17.

Things started off a little slow for this one only because I thought there would be more high quality photos up as of last night.

I guess people are still recovering from their respective heat strokes.

I've posted about this car a couple times here, it's dope
Perhaps one of my new favorite Mk2 Golfs, love how it's tucking up front
Normally I'm more of a single round found but damn if this doesn't look good

This is just too clean
This car reminds me of Jujhar’s Golf but with different paint and less poke, fitments dialed
Another car that's just clean as hell... and Ontario based

Nice bike and nice car

Above photo taken by: Edvis

Was this pic taken because of the car or...
In a word? Epic
This car drives all over the place!
Quite like that sticker placement, adds a bit of contrast in a unique way
Hmm, maybe the most appealing of these I have seen yet

Above pics taken by: mattdoscher

Reppin' for local shop Chop Shop
Liberty VIP rolled through
Another shot of Paige and her beach display, a lot of people took photos of this
The car took that won limbo contest at Eurokracy
My friend sold one of these and picked up a Jetta, Keven I think he made a mistake...

Featured Ride: Matt’s 2001 S2000

8

It’s interesting to consider whether or not Honda knew just how popular the s2000 would become when they released it in 1999. Since it’s birth the the car has been modified 1000 times over with literally no end in sight. It’s really remarkable what people are doing to these cars around the globe and right here in Toronto.

Matt, a long time Honda enthusiast and show veteran, has been working on his s2000 ever since he sold his Civic and the current revision of this constantly changing project is simply stunning.

The ARK N2 Titanium exhaust fitted to this s2000  does a great job of playing hype man to the main attraction because you hear this s2000 before you see it, and once you turn your head to see where that sweet exhaust note is coming from you are rewarded with a virtually flawless example of how a street prepped s2000 should be modified.

The brand new factory direct Work Miester SP1 wheels are the focal point of the exterior but hardly all that is going on. Matt has updated the look of his s2k by converting all relevant exterior pieces to AP2 units, adding a Honda Club Racer lip and side marker lights and completing the list of short but sweet exterior modifications are  J’s racing side skirts.

The suspension on this car clearly isn’t stock and the beautiful lack of ground clearance is thanks to HSD coils, these coil overs are complimented by additional suspension modifications that include a trio of Spoon components (cross member, center beam, and differential bars) along with a GTspec front strut bar, and new bushings all around provided by Mugen and Powerflex.

Matt’s s2000 sees lots of different uses, throughout the week it is a daily driver while on the weekend it is either a track car or a show car.

With that mix of uses in mind Matt decided the best way to strike his perfect balance of performance, looks, and reliability was to add components from the ARC (air induction box, spark plug cover, air diversion plate), Spoon (oil Cap, temperature Switch, thermostat), and DC sports (headers) catalogs in addition to a rad from Koyo to help keep things cool wherever the car may find itself.

In the braking department Matt stuck with the rotors the Honda engineers installed from the factory but turned to StopTech for friction material.

Inside Matt kept things clean, to keep track of the cars vitals he has installed Defi BF series gauges, and to keep track of possible rear enders he added a Spoon mirror. Like the outside the center console has been switched out for the AP2 version and an ARC shift knob now sits atop the shifter.

A Sony in car entertainment system consisting of a 12″ Xplode sub and two Xplode GTR 800 amps has been installed to help the tunes keep audible when the top is down and the wind noise is high.

With the summer season at it’s peak Matt is looking to enjoy his new look for as long as the weather allows and if you want to check out this car in person one event you are guaranteed to see it at is Matt’s own charity show Tuners Against Street Racing which takes place August 28th 2011 at Mosport park.

WTF: Friday What are the odds?

11

Quite some time ago (May) I facebook/tweeted a picture of a very interesting looking CRX I spotted one early morning in Toronto while dropping Lyndsey off for a run. The feedback on the car was pretty mixed but in person it was clean if nothing else, especially for it’s vintage.

Fast forward a couple months and reader/fan Artin found this CRX up for sale locally on Kijiji, pictures and a quick description from the seller is below:

ONE OF A KIND CRX!!!

-Custom body kit
-Metallic custom paint job
-1.6L VTEC engine
-Cross drillled rotors all around
-MOMO steering wheel and pedals
-Dual performance exhaust
-Integra headlights
-Supra tail lights
-Sunroof
-Alarm

Definitely a rare kit that borrows parts from a few different places
Weird the car looks the same amount of dirty as I saw it last
Looks like maybe it's been sittinf for a bit though

The description is pretty vauge however because it doesn’t at all metion the maker of the kit which was Vitesse or that it was actually made by a now defunct local company called Gulf Coast Motorsports.

There is a chance howevr that the owner bought it second hand and didn’t know any of this but I find that a little hard to believe only because based on google results it doesn’t really seem like the kit was increidbly popular either for the CRX pictured above or the Civic coupe which is pictured below.

Jalopnik did do a little piece on the kits though and that is where these photos come from:

Without a roof the car looks a little weird(er) IMO
Much prefer the crx version
The rear just seems so bulbous on the cab
But much more refined here.

In the end I suppose a company built around a car that doesn’t really hold up all that well in Canada isn’t the best of ideas. The molds for the kit were presumably sold or traded in around 2007 and that was that.

Just another random kit to come and go now…

Site Updates

Another fairly busy weekend but that’s alright as I am going on vacation next weekend so I might as well earn it. Tonight I will be in Milton for their annual downtown Street show and Sunday I will be at Mosport for:

I might roll up with the Division R / Nine-O-Five Rides guys and I will have t shirts on me as well as be getting a restock in stickers from Seche Media.

Flashback Friday

I will be posting a feature on an s2000 this Monday which had me thinking about the s2000 below that I have not see since these photos. Anyone know where this car ended up?

If the car is gone surely the wheels are on something around here now

Until Monday.
