Theme Tuesdays: E30s Part II

5

I can’t believe I have only done one e30 Theme Tuesday prior to this. As a former owner and current member of a number of  BMW/E30 forums this is down right shameful.

Not to mention that the the e30 is such a classic and versatile chassis, they look great dumped and kitted on low offset wheels, but also respond great to functional modifications when let loose on the track.

Lets have a look at some from both camps function and form.

Diving boards

Say what you will about these bumpers I think if you know what you are doing you can pull them off. The early chassis also has the larger rear arch to it’s benefit as well.

Of course I am impartial… 😉

Diving boards are all about how you work em
This could be an owners manual shot
Early rear arches FTW
Type A's look the best flat capped, or no cap at all, don't like the other caps much
Love everything about this.
This car might be my new favorite early drop
This car is quite a few years old now, can't remember how he did it, but it's real copper

Non diving board equipped

Of course I have nothing against the later models either…

17 inch Alpinas look great on this sedan
Mtech II on a unique set of BBS wheels
Great pair, actually epic pair. Mtech I or II take your pick
Want.
Rob's e30
Ben's Touring is sick, thanks for adding it to the fanpage
Simple and clean 5 lugged swapped coupe
Beaut.

Track

Never underestimate an e30 on the track.

Chris at one of the last drift events of the year
More early model love
Hunting in packs
Well that is one what course
Posted this before? Perhaps...
That front fender has sure got a lot of pull
All the reasons I sold this car seem trivial now
and I will end things off with something I could have posted last week...

Built for a purpose

6

This car is easily one of my favorite EG’s in the area. I followed the initial build closely on jdmrides.ca (actually the main reason I joined the site) and have continued to watch the car evolve from daily driver/track car to track car/daily driver as the years have gone by.

Over the winter Spenser plans to do even more function oriented work to the car so that next year it’s even more of a contender out on the Shannonville Track.

Ready for business
While the J's wing isn't for everyone it is functional on the track
Rolling shots ftw

If you are wondering why he has Kosei K-1s up front but not in the rear it’s because the way the car is set up know handles better than if it was setup to fit the K-1s and since both sets of wheels are light he decided to rock that.

In the fog

4

Almost any car that I choose to post after an intense two weeks of SEMA coverage is bound to look pretty tame so instead of putting someone’s ride directly up against all those high dollar, very sick, builds I figured I might as well put mine up first.

These pics were taken by my girlfriend about two weeks ago, the night before I converted my ride to winter mode, and now looking back at them I have realized just how long of a winter it is going to be 🙁

Axe murder scene right here
I have yellow fog overlays which I guess do nothing for the output
'Twas the night before wintermode

and now….

Lip off, rims off, steelies on, height same
Our first accumulation here in Mississauga, melted soon after

Next season the only change aesthetically will be new wheels at 18×8 and around 38 to 32 offset. I want something a bit more aggressive but nothing I have to be too worried about driving on a daily basis around here.

My current wheels would stick around for track days/ auto-x if I can finally get my sorry self out to one.

WTF Friday: Nothing rides like a Deere

2

Some weeks I have a general idea about what I am going to post on Friday but other weeks, like this one, I have absolutely no idea. Thankfully the internet is a wealth of completely random and strange vehicle based things so I never really run a big risk of coming up with nothing.

After checking out a few of my local haunts I found a picture of this John Deere tractor/tryke and became intrigued so after a quick round on the Google monster I found another pic.

This John Deere trike isn’t the first of it’s kind that I have seen, however it is the first I have seen that seems to be made from an actual, once functional, John Deere Tractor and not painted to look as such.

These particular pictures are from the Sturgis bike rally in 2009 but I have seen smaller pictures of it from 2010 so I assume it is still around.

I’m kind of interested to know how fast it goes and how much work went into it.

Anyone have a build thread?

How is this registered I wonder?
She must end up with lots of bug in her hair

Site Updates

Now that SEMA is done I’ll be working on some of the other ideas I’ve had kicking around in my head. There has been a lot of interest lately from a number of potential sponsors which I will be getting back to over the weekend.

Some of which are willing to contribute some stuff for more giveaways so I should have some more free stuff for you guys to win in the next couple weeks.

Sorry I don’t have any sort of Black Friday sale going like everyone else but it kind of snuck up on me. However things are always cheap in the store and you can make the purchases in your underwear.

Flashback Friday

We got snow today, no accumulation yet but before you know it Winter Wednesdays will return, here is a goody from last year

Low all year.

Event Coverage: SEMA Part 8

1

Well, I’ve finally reached what is going to be the end of the 2010 SEMA coverage. Hopefully you guys have enjoyed all of the coverage as much as I have enjoyed posting it. I hope after seeing these photos you are now devising a way to get to next years show as I think it’s something every enthusiast should try and get out to.

As much I have tried to share here it’s really, really, hard to explain what it’s like until you’ve been, I’ve never been so exhausted from taking in so much automotive eye candy.

Today is a continuation of yesterdays outdoor coverage and actually has the cars I saw earliest in the week.

‘Explore Adventure’ FJ

This really trick tear drop camper was being pulled by a nice FJ Cruiser. This camper trailer was a lot different than the ones I am used to seeing as those ones normally smell like the 70s, or at least what I assume the 70s smelled like…

This would make one hell of a BMX road trip rig
Inside was this very dope kitchen setup
Great carpentry throughout
I once read a build thread on one of these, I should find it and share

Imports and Euros

One thing that sort of struck me as odd at SEMA was the small amount of Volkswagens, today’s post doesn’t change that or anything it’s just a general observation.

This bagged 7 was recently featured on Speedhunters
Clean A3 Wagon.
Check out the detailing on this trunk lid, oh and the bottle.
Drift sled from Team Hybrid
Several other people at the show would disagree 😛
Subtle yet aggressive wide body Evo
Never seen a bike stand like this before.
This Lex was tucked away near some 4x4s
Sick looking IS on Airrunner suspension
Tucked

Boxes

Lots of Scion presence outside of the main hall of SEMA, now that Scions are available in Canada I expect there to be a lot more modified ones in my area.

CF flares, skirts, and lip. Brave!
A box from the Phaze 2 camp
Flush.
If flush isn't your thing how about some tuck?
Self explanatory

More Minitrucks

The bagged trucks just don’t stop.

Clean s10 to start things off that is tuckin lugs...
Nice bed setup, though I wonder why the compressors were not under mounted
Another very detailed paint job, right down to the rims
My love for Minitrucks and SEMA was a match made in heaven
Colorado on what look to be blacked out Escalade wheels
Slammed Armada
It had a pretty interesting suspension set up, unlike most trucks I have seen
This truck kind of confused me but I think it's an early s10 Blazer under there
I'm basing that solely the window hinges and roof line
A few things still needed to be straightened out on this dualie but it sat great
This has as many bags in the rear as some trucks do all around
Smooth ass end to finish things off
This very clean GMC would be my choice of the bunch
Clean bed set up, you could still haul a little in there?
I'm a fan of painted emblems when done well
and these were done well

Classics

This was pretty interesting it's a Ford body, more or less, on a Suburban chassis with a 350 under the hood
Remember when wood panel cars earned you a shot in the arm?
Mighty fine looking Chevelle I missed from the other day
This car belonged on the strip
Big ol Impala with lots of chrome
What went in the trunks that the tires had to be stored Continental style?
Clean Impala on Accuair suspension
Very nice bay
Beautiful and streetable wagon
Nova on big ol Forged wheels
I really like the shaved, de-chromed, painted, bumpers
Diiiish
Bitchin 50s Chevy
With great Scallops and pin striping
Making up for the lack of new Camaros with old today
SEMA engine bay shots have been well received
Beauty RS
Swapped.

That’s it and that’s all. Hopefully I can go again next year and figure out what the heck is going on with this thing…

I guess this is one way to work on the motor eh?

I’m off now, to my American readers Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for visiting!

SEMA Showstopper: Gold Mines

6

The last two cars I will be posting as Showstoppers from the 2010 SEMA show are cars that I had to revisit a number of times in order to get clear photos due to the fact that each had sizable crowds gawking virtually any time I passed by.

Both of these cars lie somewhere between show and street-able in the sense that the owners probably drive both of them quite a bit but wouldn’t dare risk daily driving as getting into a fender bender with one of these would be a travesty.

1939 LaSalle Couple

The first car is a beautiful 1939 LaSalle built by Dominator Street Rods.

Not much was really available in way of information about this car at the show, and the internet has only revealed to me the following things:

  • The current owner, Bill West, has owned it for the past 20 years
  • It has a super charged Northstar power plant
  • It was built to be driven

I suppose I will just let the photos fill in the rest:

Great design looks good for a long time.
The lines of this car lend themselves well to the raked stance
This picture is a little fuzzy but still captures the smoothness of this car for lack of a better word
The front end of this car really interested me with the extensive grill work

Joe Brown’s 1967 Ford Mustang

Joe Brown, aka Hot Rod Joe of Hot Rod Joes Rod and Custom brought his 1967 Mustang to SEMA and I thought it was a perfect match for a post with the LaSalle above.

Joe’s Stang is powered by a Supercharged SVT Cobra motor which no doubt makes gobs of power and is a lot of fun to bang through all 6 gears.

While it’s virtually impossible to tell from the pictures this car has got a full tube chassis and custom suspension setup.

Also in order to get those big rear wheels to fit in the arches at it’s new ride height the rear wheel openings were tastefully modified so that they didn’t take too much away from the intended lines of the car.

This car was incredibly clean all throughout and always had a big crowd around it.

The size of those rear wheels is hid well thanks to the reworked fenders
It killed me not to include this shot in the 'Dat Ass' Theme Tuesday
Lots of time was spent under the hood to make it look this good
That super charged SVT motor sure fills the engine bay up
The car has fully independent suspension but I do not know if it's static or not.

Hope you enjoyed this pairing, I’ll be back later tonight with the last set of 50 photos from SEMA 2010.

Event Coverage: SEMA Part 7

3

This is going to be the second last set of coverage and it’s pretty substantial, 50 plus photos from the outside of the show so if you are on a phone or a stressed connection give it some time.

Imagine the net worth of all the cars on the convention center grounds during the week? That’s a lot of money.

The Bandit

When I was growing up there was a 1979 Trans Am that sat at the end of the street I lived on from when I was 8 to the time I got my license.

I tried to convince my dad we should have it but he thought otherwise. I watched this car fade from a bright orange to a dull peach before it vanished and all that was left was a rust stain on the interlocked driveway.

This car reminded me of that, and obviously Smokey & The Bandit.

The Iconic bird restyled
I like the updated wheels a lot
Someone once told me the 78/79s were fairly slow, I bet this one goes though

The Derelict

Speedhunters did a feature on this ’52 Town and Country, which was basically a modern updated chassis under an un restored barn find body.

Epic sleeper status.

It's got a Hemi
While it looks rough I would wager it rides well
The tailgate was in great shape for original
As was the interior
Quick shot of the specs for those interested

Rolling Canvas

This mini truck had a lot of work done to it but what was interesting was the airbrush work over the entirety of this truck.

The devil was in the details and the details were everywhere.

The eyes were one of the more obvious details
While details like the strapping on the tanks were more subtle
The entire body was covered in art, and it was RHD as well
Cup holders in the middle of the seat? Brilliant as I do this anyway
I think the overall theme of the artwork was under water/ pirate related

Trucks

While we are on the topic of trucks here are a few more that were outside

Gas pig for sure but looks great
Solid colors are always a safe bet
But I LOVE this paint and color scheme
Rats are always very interesting
and this one's got a bed so it's a truck
This High Lux was also pretty unique
I believe it was the only older JDM truck at the show

Vip Styled cars

Some of these are obvious VIP builds while others just have a little bit of VIP influence to them.

This Ac looked pretty classy and was well fitted
Stance on point
This car made me think of Sic Ryde..
Perhaps his 2012 look?
This Lex is very 'grown man business'
GS/ Aristo on Weds
Sit's mighty fine
Job Design Neo Hybrid Celsior
With Forgestar getting in on the pin striping
I posted about this car on facebook a couple of times, very clean
Also on Weds

Assorted

A mixed bag of awesome

Murdered, bagged, 300
Pretty crazy wide body Acura
With a wide ass
Eurostop brought these two e30s out
Fitment was a little off for the wide body but pretty eye catching none the less
Simple, yet effective e36
e46 on awesome TSW wheels, though the Kitsuna is a little out of place
Hello Kitty
The copper finish on the wheels really pops
This Impala offers higher education
Very clean g35
Reppin' canibeat plate covers
Beauty of a Continental
Could fit a lot of bodies in this trunk
Bagged Mag
Miata on XXRs
Equipped with a serious diffuser
Beautiful custom rod
Jet bike + Ramp = ??
Had to take some shots of this for the Rally fans
Probably the cleanest this car has ever been
Love this flat blue paint, Hot Rod Flatz perhaps?
End things off with a Type 65 Coupe replica

Even at part 7 I am still in shock that one batch of  SEMA coverage is equal to an entire set of car show coverage I do normally.

I should have the final coverage from SEMA tomorrow, I’m going for the title of ‘The only blog still posting SEMA coverage‘ haha.

Theme Tuesdays: Dat Ass

8

I swear I did a Theme Tuesday like this before but it turns out I only posted a small collection of car derrieres. It’s kind of funny that not even two years in I am already  losing track of what I’ve posted, anyway my poor memory aside today’s Theme is the ass end of cars.

I tried my best to get only direct back shots but I made a few exceptions in cases I deemed appropriate, hopefully you do as well.

Start things off with a bang
Mugen NSX, RR
Local e46
I need this car and road in my life.
Perfect.
GT
Damn this looks fantastic
I love how you can tell this car has serious rake going on
One of those exceptions I was talking about
The Victoria based RX-8 from a bit back
I think this car was sold
Roofline = mirror height
Another worthy exception
The final exception
Over fenders and still pokin
Mustangs are good at this
Nice view as it pulls away from you
Dat exhaust?

Event Coverage: SEMA Part 6

7

It’s time to get to the outside of SEMA, finally! While the entire SEMA show was impressive I would have to say the outside had the most modified cars per square foot.

However it was also hot, very hot compared to Ontario and walking around with a laptop in my bag wasn’t helping so I did it in stages between the halls.

Here’s part 1 from the outside.

Drift

Because it was hot, and drinks were expensive, I figured first I should head over the Monster track area and see if I could score any free Monster.

I failed, but I did get to see a couple of Ford Mustangs with the new 5.0’s put on a drift demo.

I've never actually seen a new Mustang drift in person before this
The new 5.0's sound as good as the originals
These cars look pretty good sideways
Race prep chases street prep

DUB at SEMA

I’ve never been to an official DUB show before (I’m not even certain whether or not the come to the Toronto area) but I will say they are certainly an experience of sorts.

I saw cars at the show unlike anything I had seen before many of which were not my taste at all, however I did manage to find a few interesting ones to photograph.

This is G.
Would this classify as a low-rod?
I wonder how long a car can stay on 3 for?
Layin rocker
70s or so slammed Jimmy? Either way looks great
Chevy Custom 10 on biiiig wheels
Copper Camaro
Other than the fact that you might be the crumple zone these vans are awesome
Boso bike!
There is way over the top and then there is this
Ya this truck is pretty big
But this is even bigger
And this is just massive
This looks incredibly odd.
This is a good look
30s Ford?
This was some sort of update/retro kit

Outside

After making my way away from the track and Dub show I checked out some of the car a little farther away from the convention center.

The kid who drives this truck is 7, I am jealous
I wish I had one of these when I was 7, though I might not have made 8 then
Another unique creation from the crew at GAS
Roth's creations are always worth a second look

The Golden Sub and The Webb Wedge Roadster

Both of these cars were downright amazing and had I taken better pictures of them (and had I had more card space) they would have easily made Showstoppers. Both are built by Webb Automotive art and are just that, pieces of Automotive art.

I figure these two are probably the best cars to end today’s post with.

The Wedge Roadster
Took some waiting to get a clear shot
The body alone on this was a work of art.
I've never seen rotors like this in an automotive application
Probably a bit of a handful to drive, actually not sure if I would fit

SEMA Showstopper: The Syborg

4

I’m an early gen S-10(/Blazer/Jimmy/Sonoma) fan, and have been for as long as I can remember, even before I knew that they came in potent Sy/Ty versions.

I’m actually still convinced Sy/Ty’s are two of the best production trucks ever made. One big problem with my love for these trucks is that few survive our winters. I can think of a handful of clean s10s/blazers in the area and one Typhoon, and that’s one of the reasons why seeing this once Sonoma GT at SEMA was such a treat.

Another reason seeing this truck was so awesome is because I’ve been following the build for years perhaps even the second one I started following, the first I remember was Project Vixen (Twin Turbo Delorean), it’s still probably one of the most engaging builds I have ever read on line.

After initially spotting the truck on our way out the day before, the next day I walked around the truck and let all of the details of the build sink in.

Love this shot, the two turbos just peeking out

First I looked under the hood at all of the work done therein.

At this point clean engine bays were nothing new to me having seen a number of exceptional ones already. However I could appreciate this one just a little bit more having spent a decent amount of time under the hood of my own Blazer.

I saw absolutely no resemblance between this bay and the one in my accursed truck, a lot of work had been done to clean it up and smooth it out so that it showcased the crown jewel under the hood: a twin turbo 4.7L v6 that replaced the “I make a lot of noise but not a whole lot of power” 4.3L v6 Vortec lump that laid there previously.

A twin turbo 4.7L that's had every detail carefully calculated

The interior of this truck was also a work of art that hardly resembled the factory s10 living quarters.

Redone in all  suede and leather the interior was so well put together that if I didn’t know from reading the build I would have never known an 8 point roll cage was somewhere inside.

If you have ever seen a stock s10 interior you know how amazing this is

After spending so much time on the interior, under hood, and body of this car the owner new that it needed a serious suspension setup to keep things rolling and looking good so it sits on an Air Ride Technologies setup which is configured so this truck looks great aired out but can also air up and put the power down at any time.

Gah, speechless

To help keep all that power from going up entirely in tire smoke this truck has huge rubber on all four corners (225/245) along with 14″ Willwood binders behind the 18 and 20″ wheels for when the fun needs to stop.

Should have grabbed one of thise myself...

Finished this truck is one of the  cleanest Sonoma’s ever built and it’s hard to believe it started as what was essentially a Syclone with all of it’s go fast parts stripped out.

But that’s not even the craziest part of the build, the craziest thing about this all is that after building the truck since around 2003 the owner sold it basically right as it was finished to a private collector.

Unless Jay Leno was that collector chances are pretty good that we will never see this truck again.

Damn.
