WTF Friday: Worlds Collide

2

Because of their relatively low price point and ease to work on, people do a whole lot of things (both good and bad) with the Chevrolet S-10.

While I’ve posted countless great examples on the site through event coverage and internet finds, I’ve probably posted a good half dozen or more questionable ones here in WTF Friday category.

Today’s S-10, which is the unlikely union of Ford body and Chevy truck, clocks in closer to bad then it does good.

odd_s10_1

The jarring creation you see above is a slightly lowered first gen s-10 that’s had the native Chevy sheet metal replaced with that of a 54 Ford pick-up.

odd_s10_4

As you might expect the Ford body panels didn’t willingly fall onto the s-10 chassis so the owner/builder had to narrow the hood and grill 6″.

In order to mostly see out the wind shield he also had to pancake the hood 4″ and to make the fenders meet the cab he had to extend them two inches.

The size of the 54 front end combined with the extension of the fenders are probably what contribute most to the cars overpowering front end.

odd_s10_5

Out back parts of the ’54 Ford bed have mated with a stock s-10 bed which, despite not matching the cab in the least, doesn’t actually look all that bad.

The entire thing was then sprayed Hot Rod Flatz Midnight Blue, christened the F-10, and thrown on eBay for $8,500.

odd_s10_3

odd_s10_2

One can only imagine the reactions this truck gets anywhere it goes. I’m really curious what both Chevy and Ford owners throwing their arms up in disbelief at the same time sounds like.

The finish line is just around with corner with this years SEMA coverage provided by Performance Improvements, and today we’ve got photos  from Rob’s last day at the show before he and his brother mashed the loud pedal back to Ontario.

There is a diverse collection of vehicles and displays today including two cars representing Ontario well in Vegas which is always awesome to see.

Ring Brothers Pantera

I had originally earmarked the Ring Brothers 71 Pantera build for  a SEMA show stopper but to keep this year’s SEMA coverage from dragging on too long I’ve decided to include it here.

Dubbed ADRNLN this Pantera has ditched the Windsor in favor of a supercharged LS3 and features an incredible interior design by Nike. Yes Nike shoes Nike.

Theme Tuesdays: Karmann Ghias

4

The Karmann Ghia is a car that prior to starting this site I didn’t really know a whole lot about.

I think I had maybe seen a handful  up to that point, but I never really put much time into learning much about them.

Of course hang around Volkswagen (or rather air cooled) guys long enough and you pick up a bit here and there and suddenly you grown quite fond of them.

Inexplicably I’ve yet to do a Theme Tuesday on them and that seems wrong so here goes:

Back today with part 2 of the Stance Is Everything / Performance Improvements coverage of the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas Nevada.

When Rob offered to contribute coverage this year I wasn’t really sure how many photos he’d be able to fire off between meetings and conferences that come with conducting business the week of the SEMA show.

It turns out I grossly underestimated Rob’s ability to multi-task because he did a really good job of capturing a variety of vehicles at the show, from Imports to Muscle and everything in between.

Today’s photos come from the main hall and there’s still a lot more to come next week, enjoy!

SEMA Showstopper: Fuller Hot Rods Double Down

0

Rob from Performance Improvements shot me a message yesterday that he was wrapping up his photos from SEMA 2013 and to let him know if there was anything specific I wanted photos of.

Without a moments hesitation I said I need (not want) more photos of the all wheel drive ’32 Ford I’ve seen kicking around.

A few hours later into my drop box arrived an awesome collection of shots of the Fuller Hot Rods “Double Down” and I knew I had 2013’s first Stance Is Everything SEMA Showstopper.

Currently a work in progress this project has all the makings of an insane hot rod capable of doing it all.

fuller_double_down_front_quarter_high

fuller_double_down_rear

fuller_double_down_rear_three_quarter_high

What you see poking out where the rad should be –had it not been moved to the rear– is a quick change housing for the front differential and providing the awesome stance is the 28.5×14.50 Goodyear Eagle slicks mounted to magnesium racing wheels.

fuller_double_down_interior

fuller_double_down_interior_2

Inside the interior is no where to be found, leaving all the beautiful mechanics and craftsmanship visible.

The transfer case is reportedly lifted from a GMC Denali and is mated to a G-Force clutch-less five speed transmission.

Sending power to all of this is a Jon Kasse based 600ci, 900 horse power Boss 429 motor (insert Tim Allen appropriate Tim Allen grunt).

fuller_double_down_details_2

fuller_double_down_details_3

fuller_double_down_details_4

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this entire build is that this car is the fact that it was inspired by a similar car that has not been touched in 40 years.

Ryan Fuller randomly met Emmett Burton at Cars and Coffee one Saturday. He went to his house to see his collection of 30 vehicles of all different stages of construction.

There sat this really cool 32 Ford Roadster! Burton started the project to compete in the “Cannonball Run” before the movie came out.

Magnesium Wide 5 Sprint Car wheels, Mag Quick-Change rear end…All Untouched for almost 40 Years!! Emmett Started this car in 1971 and quit working on it in 1973. He literally left the tools where they lay and didn’t touch them for 4 Decades!

Bryan was so moved by this car he decided to build a cannonball tribute to this vehicle and began collecting parts.

fuller_double_down_front

fuller_double_down_front_quarter

I think it goes without saying that I can’t wait to see this thing completed and out ripping the strip, road course, and salt flats.

You can follow the build here on FullerHotRods.com blog

Event Coverage: Sema 2013 – Part. 1

I’m sure by now most of your social media feeds are flooded with content from the 2013 SEMA show, which is justifiable because as usual this years show looks awesome.

Like yourselves I am not in Vegas this year but rather at home in Toronto wishing I’d have gone.

However this doesn’t mean I don’t have any original coverage for the site. Rob McJannett (@pispeedshops) and his brother Andy McJannett (@ehmcj) of Performance Improvements embarked on a journey of epic proportions that concluded in Vegas for SEMA.

With Andy at the wheel, Rob behind the camera, and me turning the knobs back here in Toronto, there will be no shortage of photos on Stance Is Everything from both SEMA and the Texas Mile.

Like years previous today’s coverage will start outside the convention centre on the day which some have deemed the storm before the storm.

Theme Tuesdays: SR20 In Everything

3

I’ve decided to follow up the LSX, 2JZ, and F20 ‘in everything’ Theme Tuesdays with an SR20 edition.

To be honest it was a tough call whether or not to do rotary or SR20 centred post but once I did a little bit of digging I discovered the Nissan’s 4 cylinder is actually fairly well travelled.

I am going to start this one off strange then work my way towards slightly more ‘normal’ by the end.

On the way back from H2O the odometer on my 2004 Mazda 3 clicked past 216,000 which means that I have now traveled roughly sixteen thousand kilometers on my Air Lift Performance suspension set-up.

Since my switch to the ‘darkside’ via the final production prototype of Air Lift’s Mazda 3 kit I’ve been repeatedly asked a few of the same questions about my suspension.

These questions are generally variations of: how does it ride, how reliable/accurate is the management system, and do you plan on driving it in the winter?

To answer the last question first yes I will continue to drive my car all year. This car is, and will always be, a daily driver and that includes driving it straight through the absolute worst of the winter conditions here in Toronto.

My immediate plans for winter prep are actually quite simple; drain the tank more often.

Air Lift tests their bags and struts to both hot and cold extremes so I’ve got nothing to worry about in that regard, and since the main issues people have running air in the winter stems from moisture freezing in the lines –or leaks of which I have none– draining my tank weekly instead of monthly should eliminate/minimize any problems I could encounter.

Should the aforementioned not be sufficient I will add a little brake line antifreeze to the mix, if I encounter any problems after that step I will add a water trap.

I intend to do a mid winter update on this very subject so if you are particularly concerned about winter driving on bags look out for that post in February.

In terms of reliability my set-up has thus far been absolutely rock solid. The Autopilot V2 management system really is quite the small wonder, it occupies next to no space in my hatch and performs flawlessly.

Currently I have four ride height presets, an all up, and an all down saved in my V2.

My presets (measured in psi) are as follows:

Preset Driver Front Passenger Front Driver Rear Passenger Rear
Solo 38 38 38 30
One Passenger 40 42 38 35
Two Passengers 42 42 43 40
Three Passengers (full car) 43 43 52 49
All Up 70 70 65 65
All Down 0 0 0 0

These presets put me at roughly 22 3/4″  front and 23 1/4″ rear fender to ground which equates to a very minimal amount of tire tuck with a slight forward rake.

This is exactly how I wanted my car to sit and hair lower than I was static.

One of the biggest advantages of the Air Lift strut set-up is that as the system raises or lowers psi in the air spring the spring rates increase or decrease respectively, while the struts maintain their full length of travel.

This means that the increase in pressure at each preset above ensures that my wheels don’t hit my fenders and the car doesn’t hit the ground over bumps when more passengers are introduced.

Determining the best pressures for the above scenarios only took about a minute or two of play on manual mode when faced with a new scenario. In fact my full car preset was established in a matter of minutes in Ocean City when we decided to cruise the strip in my car.

Should a new situation arise I still have three more presets to play with, which quite frankly is more than enough.

If you are curious about the difference in drivers rear versus passenger rear, my passenger quarter was the first one I ever rolled and has slightly more pull which means in order to look right visually I run a little less psi.

In my eight month experience the system has always come within +/- 1 psi of the preset and the only ‘problem’ I’ve ever encountered is the car not sitting quite as low as I want when transitioning to ride height from the all up preset.

The pressures read correct but the car for whatever reason it sits a little bit high. This could be attributed to the fact that whenever I use all up I also jack the car off the ground.

If I double tap the preset button with the car in motion things settle down back to where they should be. With the way my (and presumably most of you) wheels are set-up the system erring on the side of too high is easier on the wallet than too low.

The ride quality, in a word, is beautiful. While I managed to convince myself my static ride wasn’t that bad, my passengers thought quite the contrary. Previously I had next to no travel with moderately stiff springs, which meant anyone in my car felt every bump in the road and on occasion got to know the physical limits of my suspension travel quite intimately.

The improvement in ride quality was noticeable the instant I first drove the car on air and to date I have yet to bottom out my struts in the sixteen thousand km I’ve driven.

This includes trips to Detroit, Montreal, and Ocean City.

Despite what many assume, modern air suspension is not ‘floaty’ or under damped, and the best way to describe my ride quality now would be to liken it to a functionally set up street coilover system.

My ride quality is now worlds away from stock, stiffer than springs, but considerably more enjoyable than your standard (BC/Stance/Megan/Raceland ETC) coilovers at full down and full stiff.

Set to 20/30 in the adjustment range I can feel at ease driving my parents around without fear of rattling their brains out, and my wife has gone as far to admit that the car is now comfortable to travel within.

At the same time I can take on/off ramps at a good clip and not have to worry about my wheels having it out with my quarter panels, or feeling like I am the captain of a particularly large sea vessel.

I’ve yet to take the car onto a track but I know that Air Lift did track test this suspension set-up and it performed quite well.

All said and done I honestly couldn’t be happier with my car on air and can’t really think of any reason why I would switch back. The ride is firm but forgiving, the system can be counted on, the only thing I had to sacrifice was a spare tire, and I can park right on the ground.

If you have any further questions about my experiences, set-up or anything else please feel free to comment below and I will answer them as soon as I can. Every comment on this post will receive an answer.

WTF Friday: Tuckin ‘Fos

Remember the MTV show ‘Trick It Out’? Nope me neither but apparently it was a sister show to Pimp My Ride and judging by this Civic I would say that Pimp My Ride was actually the better of the two ventures.

Transformed on air by Harbor Motorsports in a mere ten days, this Civic is the perfect example of early 2000 excess.

Upon first viewing the rear 3/4 of this car I had to chuckle because wheelie bars and 24 (yes 2-4) inch wheels are seldom installed on the same vehicle out of fears the wheels might run down the track on their own.

Surprisingly the car does tuck a significant amount of chrome rim out back thanks to some serious tub work.

Up front builders spent a significant amount of time upfront grafting on the front end of a Nissan Silvia, which had it been the only extreme modification done to the car may have not looked so bad.

Naturally the car has Lamborghini style verticle doors installed and “3000 watts” of in car entertainment.

Though there is entirely too much of it the diamond stitched red interior appears to be pretty well done.

Sadly it makes the centre console look really out of place being left stock.

Also looking fairly out of place is the mildly tuned D series motor sitting in an engine bay that looks to be inspired by Polka Dot door.

After the show ownership reverted back to shop that built it who took it to a few shows before passing it on to a Minister who took it from there until he eventually put it up for sale himself. Where the car is now remains a mystery that I’m not in any real hurry to solve.

If still pictures were not enough check out the videos below, the second is a real head scratcher.

It’s certainly been a while since a Civic popped up on WTF Friday and I really don’t see another one being more eyebrow raising than this one for some time…
