Event Coverage: Tuner Invasion 2013

8

About mid summer I acquired a Tuner Invasion flyer, stuck it on my fridge, and didn’t think much about it until I happened to have a booth beside show organizers Jay Jones and Steve Luangpakdy at the Sherway Nissan Megameet.

Both of them said the show would be worth the trip to the hammer so I took them on their word and made my way westward Sunday Sept 15th to see what was up. True to their word Tuner Invasion ended up being an enjoyable show with a great variety of cars.

Four years deep the Tuner Invasion staff know what works and what doesn’t and for 2013 they picked a simply brilliant venue. Holding a show at a bowling alley/arcade gives people the option of doing something other than sitting around a parking lot all day without taking anything away from the main focus of the event (the cars).

Had I not been manning the Stance Is Everything booth and taking the photos below I probably would have thrown a few gutterballs myself.

Mother Hawk

Ever since I first spotted the corner of this truck in the Guest Coverage from Truck and Tuner Expo 2012 I’ve wanted to see it in person because I can’t really think of any other F series trucks I’ve seen sitting on the floor.

I later learned that it’s got a 7.3L disel swap and is owned and driven by Chris Hawkin’s mother. Badass.

Brett’s LS400

I don’t see nearly enough of this car but every time I do Brett has done something to make it even better.

His most recent additions are new red suede seats, matching trunk set-up, and pin stripe but really he’s always up to something and his choices in modifications just get more refined as years go by.

Before I close out I just want to say thanks to everyone who stopped by the Stance Is Everything booth at Tuner Invasion and grabbed some appeal or stickers.

The reception in Hamilton was amazing and it’s really awesome that people not only like the site but are down to rep it as well! I’ll do my best to keep the content you like coming.

WTF Friday: Custom Extremities

0

I’m pretty lucky to be made aware of a lot of interesting builds via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and today’s truck was brought to my attention by long time reader Clint Jolly Green (who has a real last name that’s hard to spell).

My initial reaction to being tagged in the photo below was ‘holy Kansas look at those doors’ followed by quite the eyebrow raise when I noticed the rear wheel/tire situation.

It’s probably safe to assume all of your reactions will be about the same:

crazy_s10_12

Once someone tagged the builder (Able Tadour of Custom Extremities) finding more pictures of the truck wasn’t exactly too hard as he’s a pretty active member of Minitruck community and the truck was seen repeatedly at the Heritage show in Whitesburg, Ky.

I wasn’t able to find anything more about the interesting wheel/tire set-up above but one can only assume it was just used for test fitting… something?

crazy_s10_4
Both the doors and front end are focal points of this build and appear to be done pretty damn well

crazy_s10_2
Not sure which paint job came first but I think I prefer this look

I was also able to find a few of the owners other builds on HubGarage.com It looks like everything he does is low and unique in one way or another.

Event Coverage: Sherway Nissan Megameet

9

A few weeks ago Importfest hosted a ‘Mega Meet’ –aka a show and shine– at Sherway Nissan is Mississauga. The event was open to all make and model of vehicles with speciality awards reserved for Nissan entrants.

Dealership shindigs are often hit or miss but this one was pretty solid offering up a variety of cars from classics all the way to big money exotics. In addition to cars there were a few food vendors, the Grey Cup, a handful of cheerleaders, and a couple Toronto Argonaut players.

It was also the first event where Lyndsey and I set up a retail booth to sell the 2013 fall line up of T-shirts. Thanks to everyone that came by to buy a sticker, shirt, or just hang out in the shade.

Theme Tuesdays: Whitewalls

1

While reading another excellent Keith Charvonia feature on SpeedHunters it became alarmingly apparent that I have yet to do a Theme Tuesday on the classic white wall tire.

Unsurprisingly there were a number of cars equipped with said tires on my hard drive so this one came together fairly quickly.

Behind The Scenes Of A USDMFREAX Feature Shoot

2

It’s no secret that people here in North America are becoming increasingly obsessed with the enthusiast culture in Japan. Print publications like Super Street periodically run features on shops and gatherings in the land of the rising sun, while on-line media houses like SpeedHunters have hired Japanese correspondents to provide an in depth, on-going look into their scene.

On the flip side Japanese enthusiasts have begun to take great interest in what we are doing and one of the magazines providing those in Japan a close look at the North American Enthusiast culture is USDMFREAX.

Earlier this summer Ryo Kaneta -a photographer for USDM FREAX and Moto Addicts– happened to be in town and during his stay he got in touch with Aidan Borges of Liberty VIP to do a little sight seeing. Like any true car enthusiast ‘sight-seeing’ includes checking out local cars.

One conversation rolled into another until Elevated, Level One, Fitted, Righteous Garage, and myself showed up one summers afternoon for an exclusive USDMFREAX/Fitted Lifstyle photo shoot.

usdm_freaxx_x_dan_2

usdm_freaxx_x_dan_3

The shoot location ended up being Downsivew Park which was fitting because as the old Stretch & Poke venue it’s where several of us made our introductions for the first time.

As we all trickled in from different parts of the city Ryo embarked on the daunting task of shooting over a half dozen cars in a few hours.

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_derek_2

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_derek_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_derek_3

Assisted by Galen Wan Ryo made his way from one vehicle to another starting with Brian’s EK then moving on to Felix’s EM2 shortly after.

Considering I often have trouble shooting one car in a timely fashion it was really cool to see Ryo do his thing in such a short period of time.

He is incredibly focused and very efficient at what he does.

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_brian_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_brian_2

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_felix_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_felix_2

As Ryo and Galen worked the rest of us did our best to stay out of the way and divert traffic out of the background when we could.

Those of us with cameras occasionally broke away to shoot the odd photo while those without simply shot the breeze.

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_galen_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_steve_1

About mid way through it was my cars turn and I must admit it was a little surreal watching it happen. I always figured that at best my car would snag the bottom corner of an event coverage collage in a local magazine.

Never did I think it would get a half page spread in a Japanese magazine, many thanks to Ryo, Dave Soo, and Aidan for the opportunity.

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_dave_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_dave_2

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_dave_3

Once he was done shooting my car Ryo had to break briefly to transfer photos onto his laptop and while he did Dan, Brian, Arthur, and Aidan hatched a plan to shoot a few interesting videos for the Stretch & Poke Instagram.

While these videos no doubt confused a lot of the Stretch & Poke followers it’s a good example of the kind of random spontaneous humour that occurs when you get just the right mix of people together.

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_ryo_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_civic_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_james_3

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_james_1

While we watched Brian spin Dan in circles Ryo picked right up where he left off, seemingly unfazed by our immature shenanigans.

In the end his focus proved invaluable as he managed to wrap up minutes after the precious ‘golden hour’.

usdm_freaxx_x_dan_1

usdm_freaxx_x_dan_4

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_blain_1

usdm_freaxx_x_fitted_blain_2

Left with a laptop full of photos and an empty stomach we all pitched in and took Ryo to a local Steak House where he could enjoy some good old fashion western excess.

Over dinner more jokes, and stories were shared before we all parted ways.

While I wasn’t able to meet up with Ryo again before he left (I was in Montreal for Eurokracy) a few of the guys did managed to take him around to a few more spots and events which really helped round out his article in the Magazine which is one sale now.

If you’ve got a chance pick up a copy. It’s worth the cost of admission.

WTF Friday: Nothing Is Sacred

3

I’ve posted more than my fair share of eyebrow raising motor swaps and conversions both here on the site and on the fan page but I think this one just might take the cake.

Regarded by many -including Enzo Ferrari- as one of the most beautiful cars ever built very few people see it necessary to do much of anything to the Jaguar E-Type.

However, someone, somewhere (presumably in the late 70s) acquired an E-Type and decided to turn it into a quarter mile demon.

etypedragster

I wasn’t able to find any further information on this particular car, but it looks like it has a thousand stories to tell so if anyone has any info please share!

Spotted on Just A Car Guy via Bavarian Tendencies.

Event Coverage: 2013 Roadmates Corn Roast

0

Every year tucked away in a small corner of Mississauga The Roadmates (One of  Canada’s Oldest Hot Rod Clubs) hosts a corn roast for members and friends a like. This event has an atmosphere very similar to the Majestics/Luxrious BBQ making it another one of my favourite events of the season.

One of the elements that makes this event so enjoyable is that there is never any shortage of stories being tossed around by people who have been doing this whole car modification thing for longer than I’ve been alive.

This year a long time member told us quite a few stories of days gone by that he capped off with a story about his old low rider that was so close to the ground his wife had to get out of the car so he could enter and exit driveways. On occasion she even had to lend a hand by lifting the bumper of the car just that little bit so he could get over whatever hurdle happened to be in the way.

Eventually his wife got fed up with that so he built a more practical daily but damn it if wasn’t an amusing story.

Theme Tuesdays: Lettin’ The Sparks Fly: Part 3

4

In the middle of a few Theme Tuesday ideas right now so I decided to fall back to all old faithful topic this week.

Funny in Part 2 of this series I was debating the switch to air and that I have it I have yet to produce any dragging photos…something to try out on my winter wheels (Works would tear my quarters to shreds) perhaps.

I digress…

Event Coverage: Nextmod Mississauga Grand Opening

2

Since opening their flagship Markham store in ’09 Nextmod has been steadily working hard to become a household name among tuners in Canada. A Montreal store is in the works and their Ottawa location opened mid summer.

Exactly one week ago Nextmod opened their third store in Mississauga to an extremely positive reception and large turnout.

nextmod_mississauga_grand_inside_1

nextmod_mississauga_grand_inside_2

The new west end store is the first of all locations to feature a large service bay which means it will be pretty busy handling not only the installs of the Mississauga location but some of the over flow from the Markham shop as well.

Tom –the driving force behind the Mississauga location– is a long time enthusiast with a lot of experience in running service shops so I’ve got no doubt that he and his team can be trusted to do pretty much anything you would want. Being the closest shop to my house I’m sure he and I will be seeing a lot of each other in the years to come.

Here’s a couple pictures from the opening as well as two videos of the event. The first being one by Flight Faction Films and the second being the official one put out by Nextmod.

WTF Friday: Unique Air

4

On the fly adjustable suspension has come a long way since the days of yore. Companies like Air Lift make kits (or at the very least can provide a starting point) for a wide variety of cars and if hydraulics are more your fancy institutions like Hydroholics are capable of doing the same.

The need to repurpose old air plane systems, semi truck equipment, or any sort of other retro fit no longer really exists. However that doesn’t mean people are still not going to retroifit things for the sake of a good challenge.

About a month ago I spotted this car on the Stance|Works forums and noticed immediately that the air management looked unlike anything else I’d ever seen before.

I then promptly forgot about it until I started looking through the owners build thread earlier this week.

A mechanical engineer by day, and car modifier by night, the owner of this car used parts he acquired from various job sites to build his system. The guts of the management are built around pilot operated check valves and an assortment of valve banks.

Since I would probably just mistype explaining it out so here is an abridged breakdown from the owner:

I had an idea to use what we call PO checks, (pilot operated check valves), they are very reliable and we actually use them for safety applications so if air is removed from the retract of a heavy tool the cylinder will not drift.

Sounds perfect for holding air in an air bag.

When you want to to deflate you just supply a pilot air signal to reverse the check valve. I scavenged 4 of the best I could find and gathered up some parts from old valve banks that would control the air to the PO checks.

Then I scored some old R134 tanks that quickly became my 8 gallons of air tanks.

This is all installed in a fittingly unique Mercury Grand Marquis and factory air springs were put to use in the rear and up front more conventional after market bags are used in modified control arms.

The sum of all these parts is what you see below and the build thread is on going on Stance|Works.
