Event Coverage: Importfest 2011 Part:1

5

Is there such thing as a car show hangover? If so that is what I have after this years Importfest Toronto. This has always been a show that people look forward too but I felt as though this year people were anticipating it even more than usual.

I think the increased amount of anticipation was due to the hard work the Ifest team put in beforehand  promoting the show online and at events, as well as the announcement of several ‘feature‘ cars coming to the show from both within the GTA area and abroad.

Personally I was looking forward to the show as it would be my first time attending the show on setup day, and it was an opportunity to meet a huge number of readers for the first time. It’s always cool to see what you guys have to say about the site.

Today’s coverage is most of the behind the scenes stuff though a little of that might trickle into part two as well.

This vibe speaker wall is a big reason why my throat hurts today, it is LOUD
The Acurabot made it's return to Importfest to compete in the 'Elite' category
I think I heard an audible snap when the guy in the striped shirt int he background turned his head
Sic Ryde had a huge setup this year, his area was flooded with people (and models) Saturday
This Civic stopped me in my tracks the last CSCS and did the same at Importfest, it's immaculate and heavily modified
This Civic was one of three dope cars in the 'Stretch & Poke!' area
So Fresh Automotive was nearly done setting up there lineup when I passed by
Brightest Speed 3 ever, did very well when it came down to awards
This Maxima is crazy, the people next door at Fanexpo would have got a kick out of it
Importfest supporting their local Chop Shop
A3 obsession continues...

Scion Tuner Challenge 2011

I’m not sure how many of you guys have been following this challenge but the cars were all complete and debuted at Importfest. While all quite different stylistically they are all good examples of what can be done on the various Scion platforms.

My goes to the Team TDS ‘Chocolate Love’ because they are a team made up of local OGs.

Kryptonite by Camo customs out of Quebec
Anarchy by the SR auto group from BC
Chocolate love by Team TDS out of right here in Toronto
3/4 of the Chocolate love car

Nine-O-Five Rides

The Nine-0-Five Rides team are regulars at Importfest so this years was no exception. I know a couple of the guys in this group personally and know how hard they worked to get their cars ready for the show so it was good to see they all were able to make it.

Erik recently finished his turbo setup and was straight piped at IF so you could hear him coming in
Quick look at Erik's new Turbo setup
Eric and Ty parked and ready for the next day
Not sure if I have seen this Celica before, new addition?
I know the Acurabot was in the house but Alex's car went through one hell of a Transformation
I hear there is an interoffice lowest car contest where he works and now he's a little closer to the top...

Explicit Conentz

The Exclusive Wheel and Tire backed Explicit Contentz team had a bunch of unique vehicles including a very quick Kia which I will have more photos of tomorrow and Mina’s recently featured GTI along with a golf with an A3 front end.

The body work on this car was incredibly well done even with the hood popped it looked factory
Mina and the above mentioned boosted Kia

Toronto Subaru Club

TSC had it’s own team this year, they also had a meet the day after which I wasn’t able to attend but Spyder01 was if you want to check that out.

Chris' hawk eye is considerably lower than the last time I saw it and still amazing
BBS RS FTMFW
Chris pointed out that there are no WRB Subaru's in this whole line up, go figure.

Division R Performance

A lot of Division R was already there when I showed up but a few cars were still rolling in that I didn’t get a chance to shoot. Their area was pretty live during the show though thanks to the support from Cherry Sounds.

Met Tim,a reader with a very heavily modified Protege
Two very fitted G35s
This was one of the best applications of a smoke machine I have ever seen at a car show
This looks 1000 times better than the cotton ball trick people were using late 90s

Nextmod

Nextmod got their familiar spot this year and brought out a lot of their show regulars with a few new additions.

Nextmod is big in the Mazda 3 community so they always have a couple in the show with them
Shea was the first person to rock the new sticker on his 2010
White cars still make up a lot of the Nextmod lineup
But they do include a few other cars
Setting track records one weekend winning car show trophies the next...
If you don't recognize this car take a look at the feature from early this summer
Advan's gone, ADV.1's installed, and dropped, Peter was busy!

Level One

Level One has some of the most recognizable low and aggressively fit cars in the area and they brought them all out for IF.

Serious front line
Dan's s2000 had some paint work done before the show and looked absolutely flawless
Got Ass?
I love the LM's on the first car and the Civic is my favorite of that generation locally hands down

Liberty VIP

If you followed the fan page this weekend you know I spent a decent amount of time with the guys from Liberty VIP. I plan to dedicate an entire post to them in the not too distant future but I couldn’t leave them out of this post.

Going through the photos I have of these cars alone is going to take some time…. here’s a couple.

Brett, one of the local members, initially parked his LS400 upstairs
This year I really took notice at just how clean this car is
Eventually he made it down to what would be Liberty VIP's permanent home for the show, the lobby
Still want, still can't afford.
This car is straight up insane in person, insane.

Hope you enjoyed this collection of pre show photos. Tomorrow’s Theme Tuesday will be Importfest related and potentially NSFW so be sure to check that out, then Wednesday I will get into the coverage from Saturday.

WTF Friday: Blastro

2

I must admit I am pretty jealous of Solomon over at  Go with Solo because traveling around to Good Guys events gives him the opportunity to see tons of crazy cars, trucks, and vans like this 1985 Chevy Astro that has been converted into a tube chassis drag strip monster that the owner describes a street legal pro-mod all steel motor home.

I’ve seen a quite a few modified Chevy Astros in my day but never one that has been dropped, chopped, tubbed, and given a blow fuel injected big block Chevy heart.

Info on this car in terms of dyno numbers and trap times is a little sparse but pictures and videos are a plenty.

Check the textured flames on the air dam, nice touch
The entire vehicle works both as a show piece and a race beast
Solo spotted this at the Good Guys Columbus event
One hell of a gnarly people mover

Site Updates

Importfest is Saturday which means I can reveal (officially) the new sticker design that’s been in the works the past few weeks.

I am going to be giving these away to a few competitors at Importfest tonight but any I have left over will be free to any spectators who manage to track me down before they are gone.

I plan on arriving about 4 or so tomorrow and I’ll be updating my facebook and twitter with my ETA so if you want one of the pre production versions all you have to do is ask.

Big thanks to everyone involved in choosing the color ways for these new stickers, you will be given full credit in the upcoming contest for a few of these first run special editions.

I should also have some shirts and the store stock on me at the event as well.

On Sunday, if I am not too tired I will be heading out the Meeting of The Mazdas for the first time, should be a good weekend.

Flashback Friday

This one is a little obvious click below to check out Importfest 2010 Part one and two.

I just finished editing tons of photos too…

Event Coverage CSCS 2011: Round III Pt 2

5

Here’s part two of the round three CSCS coverage. Today’s post is nearly double the size of yesterdays so if you are into cars that perform on the track and ones that slide this post will be right up your alley.

I think I spent a little too much time track side this weekend because now I really wish I had the means to build something for the track now and these thoughts can lead no place financially beneficial, anyway onto the coverage!

Pits

While the drag strip was shut down due to a car spewing coolant from 1/8th mile marker all the way to the 1/4 mile marker my friend Steve and I headed out to the pit area of TMP to check out what was going on over yonder. Turns out there was quite a bit of stuff worth taking a look at.

I am jealous of this kid, very jealous
Clean MR2 waiting to get out on the course, the first MR2 I have seen locally in some time
RSK on J lines perhaps?
A look underhood
M3 waiting for it's turn out on the course
Beast of a Subaru sponsored by NV Auto
NV auto Miata seen out on the drift course
Days of Thunder is one of those movies I watch whenever it's on even though I have seen it so many times
Drift mechanics
Soarer setup to grip
This Civic was also wearing some seriously grippy shows
Fat and flush
Very nice Skyline on some CR - Kais
This shot gives you a bit of a better idea how many people were waiting to hit the track
Two very quick cars patiently waiting to tear the track a new one
Cooling after setting a new course record, note the hood discoloration

Jag

I like people who think outside of the box and this Jaguar (XJ?) setup for the road course is most certainly outside of the box. The older British gentlemen who brought out this car were very nice and explained that they bought the car for $500 and spent around $2500 turning it into the race machine you see below.

It’s so unique and unlike anything else on the track and I absolutely loved seeing them tear it up.

Looks like they managed to grab some Sailun support
Funny seeing a bare bones Jaguar interior
Looking back I wish I waited until the guy in the background was gone
Doesn't look like it here but it is moving quite quick
Cornered well for such a big cat!

Drag

Another awesome unique car that was out last Sunday
Wasn't able to catch it on the strip so I caught it stationary
Identify this car, earn internet fame
That same car showing an Integra what's up

Road Course

Track action last Sunday was pretty eventful though I somehow managed to miss both fires and an engine grenade itself.

Aero scraping cornering
Lined up in one of my favorite locations for panning shots
The official time this car made it around the track was 1:15:59

Drift

For the first time in my history of CSCS I took some pictures from the area of the course not protected by a wall, making me one of the several people they had to warn that if a car goes wayward your legs might separate from your body.

While it’s most certainly a bit more dangers to stand where I was it does make for awesome photos. Maybe next round I will convince Chris to let me have one of those orange vests and get on track….

Chris about to slide past Fiddy
Wayne was killing it in his is300
Another shot off Wayne sliding his luxury sedan
This car is still lookin' super clean
Anthony chasing Wayne
Anthony leading Ryan Stock through the course
Anthony looked solid all day and was able to take home his first win at a CSCS event
I think Andrew and Humphrey are happier than Anthony lol
Tandem dougnuts set off the drift expo
Who needs both hands anyway
Ryan Stock lighting it up in the demo
Brave girl, e30 drivers can't be trusted
Tire smoke is good for the lungs right?
Fiddy doing what he does best

That is all for this round of CSCS see you at the next round… or perhaps Importfest this weekend.

Event Coverage CSCS 2011: Round III

6

After two back to back events with flawless weather the skies turned a troubling gray for Sundays round three CSCS festivities, Of course CSCS attendees are used to mother nature pulling these shenanigans and made the trek out to Toronto Motorsports Park anyway.

Personally I had my doubts in the morning but thankfully as soon as I arrived the worst of the weather seemed to have pass which meant there was a lot for me to check out and shoot all day at TMP.

The show and shine coverage gets part one honors simply because it was the smaller batch of photos to get through last night when I was working on this post.

That’s different…

Spotted a few interesting cars and details at this rounds CSCS that I thought were worth sharing.

Really old Wedsports I think they were... not very pretty but probably very light
I over heard a discussion confusing this Camaro with another in the area which means two cars currently look similar to this in the GTA
This wide body Scion had one of the biggest bumpers I have seen in recent memory

Euro

Decent VW showing, but I think most of the BMW guys were at Bimmer Cruise which was the same day.

I saw a picture of this on the Nextmod fan page, lots of tire and poke
Toyo sponsored Mk5
Calvin I owe you a better shot of your car
Idub.ca crew

Asian Imports

Hyundai had quite a few cars out in front of their booth, mostly Gens
Honda rockin' a sticker bombed lip and classic MOMO wheels
What's one more sticker 😉 - Thanks for the support
M3nace rides lineup lead off with this Miata
This color looked great in the slightly overcast lighting
Never seen this 3 before, the CF additions in the engine bay are something I should research
Electronics department in the trunk
Looks like this Prelude picked up a new wheel sponsor, these wheels are a big improvement over the previous
TSX/Accord on CCWs
e46 m3 wheels? I dig
Conveniently parked beside the above Prelude was G35 with a GTR style front bumper and Work Varianza wheels
Close up of the color matched wheels
I waited far too long to get this shot of Focal Point then cut off half the tent...
Closer look at one of the Focal Point Subarus
This Subaru from Montreal has picked up some Importfest and Sic Ryde vinyl
Maruyichi Auto Skyline
Peter from Nextmod brought out his latest ride... those Advans are for sale if you are interested
This was unbelievably clean
Clear cam cover was a nice touch
IS250 dumped VS=XXs
Tuckin' tire like a champ

Check in tomorrow for road course, drag, and drift action. I shot drift from the leg break area this time around so I got some pretty cool shots.

Theme Tuesdays: Rolling Shots Part 3

5

Is this seriously only the third rolling shot edition of Theme Tuesday? I could have sworn I had done more than that, I suppose the rig shot one kind of counts, either way they were both several months ago so here we go again.

I’ve taken zero rolling shots myself this year and had none taken of me. I should really fix both of these issues before the season is out.

Coming...
...or going this car is sick
Man I have posted a lot of VWs latley
I'm still somewhat on the fence with these but seeing them slammed helps
Right... Type A Theme Tuesday...I forgot
Remember when HIDs were super expensive?
Incredible
I'd consider framing this if it were a print
There is a local e36 with a very similar color scheme to this, both look great
Damn this Subaru looks sinister as hell
Got this 626 confused with the MX-6 below
The owner of this car actually has another MX-6 which is below
His other MX-6 is more track inspired and my favorite of the two
These cars look so good in the right hands
Nearly every picture I see with an MFEST tag is sick
Rollin' heavy
and because I like to do stuff like this here is a car nothing like the others

Featured Ride: Mina’s Golf GTI

16

The number of tastefully modified cars in the Toronto area is increasing at a rate far greater than ever before and the local Volkswagen community seems intent on being at the forefront of this clean car revolution.

Mina, no stranger to riding low, made a few changes to his JDM and Euro inspired GTI during the off season that have made it one of the most easily recognizable MKV’s in the area.

View 1000px version in a new window

View 1000px version in a new window

The car now has ‘that’ look which enthusiasts strive for, it catches your eye instantly and holds it there while you take in the overall package that flows together effortlessly.

The body of the car in particular is so well thought out that it looks as though it should have come that way straight off of the assembly line.

Mina has cleaned up the front end of his GTI by filling the hood notch, shaving the front bumper and installing a badgless honeycomb grill, he was also able to source an authentic euro ed30 lip which he molded to the shaved front bumper while installing the matching ed30 side skirts. Finally a euro ed30 rear bumper with a custom diffuser was added to the rear to house the tips of his GHL quad cat-back exhaust.

The carefully placed matte black accents all over the vehicle are beautifully contrasted by the authentic J’s Racing Teal that is used on the ‘smiley’ and carried into the engine compartment where the Evolution Motorsports engine cover, battery cover, fuse box, Eurojet DV, and AEM true cold air intake have all be treated to doses of that unique blend of green and blue.

Painted accessories are far from all that’s going on under the hood, the performance numbers have been give a bump up thanks to more contributions from the Eurojet catalog (dv relocation, VTA catch can, and heat shield) along with a Revo stage 2 performance tune.

In the footwork department the J’s teal faces join high polished 2.5” and 3.5” aluminum lips, matte black barrels, and gold BBS RS bolts, to create one of the most attractive and unique looking sets of work VS-XX wheels in the entire GTA area.

The wheels combined a healthy dose of tire stretch and a hard-lined air lift suspension setup are responsible for giving this car its incredible stance.

At ride height this car sits essentially perfectly flush and when the air is let out of the system the front wheels tuck into the fenders and the rear quarter panel squeezes between the lip and tire.

Mina’s hard work in 2011 has so far paid off because he recently took home top honors in the MKV wild category at Vagkraft 2011, and best VW CSCS round 3 2011.

The car is an absolute must see in person to really appreciate not only the eye popping stance but the awesome color that has been used on the wheels and accents.

Congratulations Mina for helping raise the bar.

WTF Friday: Random Local Oddities

6

I’ve been sitting on a couple submissions and local random nonsense for awhile now and it’s time that I throw up some weirdness from right here in the GTA. While the Toronto area has a lot of nice cars (many of which I post up here) we are not immune to some of the more …unique… cars you see elsewhere.

If you are ever out cruising and you see something that’s local to you and quite different for whatever reason don’t hesitate to send it in to [email protected], I always read every submission though sometimes it takes me a bit to respond.

Aidan snapped a pic of this crazy 'jeepercycle' which is crazy.
You know, under the right circumstances wood moldings might not be too bad
Decent enough job I suppose
This is a real gem, has it all, Ferrari emblem, Autobot emblem, and the entire Automotive dress up isle at Canadian Tire...

Site Updates

The new sticker design is off to Seche Media and I should have them before Importfest maybe even as soon as this weekend because we will both be at the next round of CSCS.

I have also put in an order for essentially an entire restock of the store.

Flashback Friday

The street finds category is a totally under used section of the site that I should really kick back into gear especially because camera phones are way better than they were when I first posted in this section.

I think I shot this with an old Samsung flip that was 1/4 megapixel or something…

I've never been able to find this car again.

I’ve got a lot of original content just waiting for me to put up so next week should be another picture filled adventure, have a good one.

The Animated Series

2

Batman The Animated series is one of the best cartoons ever and Kevin Conroy is the best voice of Batman.

What does this have to do with cars?
Nothing.

But this beautiful Rabbit submitted by talented photographer Matthew W. Vieweger put Batman on my mind thanks to the slick vinyl work.

Matt, who hails from Alberta and is friends with previous featured photographer Mike McConnell, recently shot this Rabbit that happens to belongs to the girlfriend of a reputable Calgarian VW nut who resto modded the car into it’s current shape.

His girlfriend is a big Batman fan and that’s where the Dublu vinyl comes in.

Batman is basically the only DC character I like so I'm feelin' this hood wrap a lot
Rolling shots at night are tricky for me but Matt's got it figured
14x7s fit this Rabbit well
Watch out criminals of Gotham... or maybe Alberta

The car is dropped on Raceland coils and is almost completely stock other than a header and cherry bomb for the exhaust. There are plans to drop a 2.0 16v inside the car in the future.

Big thanks to Matt for sending this set in, go check out the rest of his work at bergwerk.ca. Look forward to seeing what else he get’s up to out in Calgary.

Event Coverage: Vagkraft 2011 Part: 2

9

Vagkraft was actually the first event I went to on Sunday and I had intentions of getting this second half of coverage up and out the door last night so I could get to editing and posting the photos from the second event.

However I ended up getting sidetracked editing photos for the next featured ride and before I knew it the entire evening had evaporated.

To make up for the semi delay I quickly edited a few more photos to make this set of coverage equal to that of the first, of course that made getting this post up take even longer, flawed thought patterns are something I do well 🙂

Mini, Nissan, BMW

Kicking things off with cars that don’t fall under the VW/Audi/Porsche umbrella.

Bright side coatings Mini on fittingly bright teal wheels
Half of team Importfest came out, Amuse 370... damn
Monolo's Z4 was recently featured on Air Society who I have to apologize to for completely sleeping on at Vagkraft
Speaking of slept on I took a few pics of Carm's car but none of the m3 beside it...
I guess that really says something about the recent changes Carm has made to this car

Porsche

This 930 on Compmotives get’s its own sub heading and paragraph because it’s just that fly.

Too much want
Wait is there such a thing as too much want with a car like this?

Audi

Couple more of the Audi’s from Vagkraft 2011

Audi on Gallardo's
This wheels look nearly identical in color to the one on Tim's featured Subaru
Tough to say which of these TT's I like more...
Respect to Pedro for rocking SIE stickers
Pretty sure this is the first time I've seen one of these on an intake
Rotiform invasion continues

Corrados, MKI, MKII, MKIII

Missed a few yesterday

Nelson's Corrado looking clean as usual
I'm convinced these are some of the strongest wheels ever made based on Schmidt's videos
It's Mudra /Ja Rule Voice
This caddy has dropped in height since I saw it last
Thanks to some air suspension, this truck has got tons of character to it
This hood is pretty slick, my shot of it not so much
I see this car fairly often on my daily commute

MIIV, MKV, MKVI, Passat

Blue on cream looks dope! Who knew?
Clean bay where the color scheme isn't overdone
Bags a plenty at Vagkraft
Like the copper color faces on this GLX
Emission testing
Didn't get a full shot of Susannah's car but you've all seen it by now, however I did get a shot of the roof vinyl
Love the choice to go with RFs here
Golf or Jetta, tuck or poke, pick your poison
VW owners raid some Work wheel stash I don't know about?
idub.ca I see ya
Bankrupt.
Last time I saw this car was at CSCS and by the time I went to take a pic of it vanished
Vag girls go hard? Wait...
Passat on Bents

One Low Tow

It might seem a little weird to end off coverage of a VAG event with pictures tow truck but this Vagkraft was the first time I actually took a long look at this truck on the inside.

I always thought the Terminator theme was just on the outside.

So I can't remember if this had Terminator stuff on it before or not
T200 in the door amongst other things
Looking for Sarah Connor

That’s a wrap for Vagkraft 2011, seeing all these dubs, Porsches, and Audis in one spot makes me wish I could make it out to H20 this year but I’ve got a previous engagement (that involved free alcohol).

Anyone up to shoot some shots of it for me?

Theme Tuesdays: Toyota MR2s (w10/w20)

9

I’ve got to thank Ollie once again for the help with this Theme Tuesday. Most of the w10 designation MR2s in this set came from his collection actually as a lot of my collection was made up of the later body style.

I’m honestly a little surprised I don’t run across these cars more often at the various events I go to, did a lot of them get over cooked into solid immovable objects or something?

Start things off with this one
Type A Theme Tuesday one day?
Windshield banner says it all?
VS-xx front and K-1 rear?
Another set of classic wheels on MR2
JDM through and through
Flared for a reason
I desperately wish I could find a high res version of this shot
I've liked this MR2 for awhile but I really wish he could find the center piece to that spoiler
Nice roller
Still one of the best stickers I have ever seen, pretty sure there is video of this car driving in the snow on youtube as well
Last saw this one in 2009
All white everythang
Both sets of Works this car has worn have looked great
Borrowing from Ravi and the group at V2Lab
Great angle
Dat ass!

I couldn’t talk about MR2’s and not include this video, sure it is as old as dirt but it is also one of the first things to pop into my head when I think MR2 and it has a VW in it and more VWs are coming later today…
