WTF Friday: Rocket Powered Go Kart!?

17

I go to a lot of car shows, as you probably already know from my event coverage, and doing so I see a lot of crazy things: insane and interesting motor swaps, slammed International trucks, and lots of scantily clad women are pretty much par for the course.

However what is not par for the course is what I saw at last Saturdays Street Classics Cruise In.

While slowly making my way outward from the ice cream truck I saw an older looking go kart sitting on the ground beside a Jr Dragster.

After studying it for several moments, trying to piece together what I was seeing in my head, the owner with a bemused look on his face asked me if I knew what I was looking at. My short answer was no (my long dumb answer was jet).

Would you do 12s on this?

The Kart you see above is said to have been built early to mid 1960s by now defunct company known as ‘Turbonique’. From my research it seems that this company only existed to strap rocket motors on cars and go karts to see how fast they could go down the track.

The rocket kart above is made up of the following vital components: two oxygen tanks, two capacitors, two spark plugs, a fuel tank, and a 60s go cart frame with a drum brake.

The rocket propulsion system (words I never thought I would type) is a closed system which the owner says could theoretically run underwater and in space since it doesn’t require fuel from the atmosphere.

When I asked the next natural question ‘how fast is it’ the owner told me that each of the rockets put out 300 pounds of thrust and the car would rip down the 1/4 mile in around 9 seconds at about 150 or so MPH.

Sounds fun? Well it probably was if you stated on the ground. To quote one of the sites I read to get a little more info:

According to all accounts this kart went from zero to 150mph in 4 seconds before becoming airborne and sliding out of control.

600 pounds of thrust no safety gear

The owner went on to say that the motors were on or off and that they were designed to burn all of the fuel in one 1/4 mile pass.  The drum brake the kart is fitted was more or less for show and so you had to make sure that the track you were running on had enough run out to keep you from pancaking into something.

The drivers wore a flame suit, helmet, and gloves and tossed their common sense out the window and held on for the ride.

So I believe those are the 2 oxygen tanks on either side with the capacitors in the midde which spark the plugs

Here’s the real kicker about this whole thing, the now owner says that he got it at a garage sale after several people passed it up, and while he wouldn’t say how much he payed I am guessing it was a lot less than what it’s currently worth considering they sold for about $1500 back then and there were only 5 or 6 said to have been built with only 3 or so remaining.

For those interested in learning a bit more about this cart and Turbonique check out the following links:

I have reason to believe this same cart has been spotted before in Florida as well damn.

Site Updates

It’s been pretty quiet week. I’ve been slowly rolling out slight functionality/seo tweaks to the over all site but other than that nothing to out of the norm has happened.
I’ve sent a draft off to a photographer for approval and scoped out a photo shoot location for an upcoming featured ride yesterday was well.

Basically just keeping it rollin.

Flashback Friday

While not anywhere near as crazy as the kart posted above the last twin motored vehicle I posted was the Evolution Racing Twin Motor VR6.

Other than the amount of motors the only real similarity here is that I have never seen either move under their own power in person.

If you know where this car is holler.

Readers rides: Facebook fans part 2

3

Since I added the Facebook ‘like’ button to the post pages last night I figured today would be the perfect time to do another edition of ‘Readers Rides‘ from the facebook fan page.

The fan page has been really active lately so it you are not a fan already take a look as I often post things on there that don’t make it here, and generally try and be just as interactive on there as I am here.

Anyway, enough plugs, let’s check out some of your rides.

Preston Tallhamer’s Del Sol

I saw this car on the fan page, saved the picture and now can’t figure out who it belonged to because its always it’s nice to see a clean Del Sol.

I can't remember whos ride on Facebook this was but it's clean

Andrews 318ti

A work in progress, Andrew has started in the right place with his 318ti by dropping it low

Andrew hails all the way from Sweden

Wills Mazda 3

Will is a member of a few of the same Mazda 3 message boards I am and was sitting on a set of OZ racing rims all winter before the summer came around and he could bring it all together with a drop, rally armor mud flaps, and red accents.

Wills Mazda 3

Phillips Mustang

Phil’s 2003 Cobra sits on 18×9 and 18×11  CCW Classics, and as you all already know I am big fan of CCW rims. I am not adverse to Mustangs either.

CCWs FTW

Nelson’s M3

Currently in Calgary Nelsons home town of St Catherines, isn’t too far from my current location.

Lots of nice cars in both St Catherines and Calgary.

Nice plate Nelson!

Frankie’s widebody 350

Frankie’s got a fairly aggressive widebody kit on his car which has me curious about what the wheel and motor setup is I’ll have to hit him up about that.

Can probably catch this car at Battle at the border

Johnny’s Rx-8

Johnny’s RX8 is sitting 18×10 +24 Mustang rims with 265 40 18 tire, as of right now he has plenty of rubbing but he is working on sorting that out and I should see some side shots soon.

Any guesses on what wheels he is running?

Ian’s VW

Holding it down for the United Kingdom Ian has built a clean dumped VW Golf.

Ian at a vw heretics meet

Jon’s Lupo

More euro flavor, this time Jon comes through with the small hatch we only wish we got here in N/A.

Red and green is a risky combination with Christmas an all but Jon seems to be pulling it off

Michael’s VW Caddy

Rounding out the UK VW crew, Michael’s got a clean VW cab that is sure to make a lot of people on this side of the pond jealous.

Clean as hell, this car could stay as is and I would rock it

Eric’s Probe

Eric from Nine-O-Five rides has one of the cleanest and best fitted Probes I have ever come across, and he runs one of the Stance Is Everything stickers with the girl on the lip of his rear wheel.

I'm a sucker for a good rolling shot

Chester’s Honda

Chester is a local who I have yet to meet in person, but, I follow him on twitter and so should you.

His Civic looks great on these Advans which you normally see on drift cars.

Juice?
Sugar, water, purple!

Big shout out to all my fans new and old! Keep uploading those pics/emailing me and we should have a part 3 in no time.

Cat Toy

6

This sick looking Audi belongs to a poster on a BMX forum I frequent and it’s pretty damn tidy.

The healthy drop and monochromatic color scheme keep things pretty low key but the more you look at it the more you notice.

Being a wagon this car is perfect for road trips
And since the owner rides the rack sees a lot of practical use
That mural is awesome.

I think the next Theme Tuesday I do is going to be all cars driven by BMX riders…

Fitted

2

It’s been awhile since I have posted Honda Fits, a long while, and I know I have not posted many fits of this generation.

These cars take a certain type of finesse to pull of properly because of their compact but high profile silhouette, when done clean and simple they don’t look bad, and real Volks never hurt anything.

Love the drop
If those fins in the middle of the bumper were smoothed I would like it even more
Don't mind the exhaust tips though they conflict with the clever no power plate
Hmm looks like something nice in the background there also might have to look into that

Theme Tuesdays: Low Citroens

10

You guys can thank Ollie for this weeks Theme Tuesday as he is the one who introduced me to the crazy world of Citroen 2CV’s which ultimately lead to today’s post.

Despite the unique (odd) suspension design of Citroens, the 2cv specifically, people drop them just the same.

Further proof that if you build it someone will slam it.

Rat, meets Cali, then France
Another Cali/rat collaboration
I ran across this one quite a bit, it could almost pass for a bug
Same car small changes
No fender gap
This truck conversion is sick
Hard to tell what wheels those are but they are a perfect fit
Sick trio, the build of the olive one is an interesting read
Laying, frame, rocker? Not sure with these lol

Video of the above in action:

American trends alive and well in this car
Another one I came across quite a few times while looking
Just cuttin the lawn

Racing

Just as people will drop anything you build people will also race anything you build.

Some CV's battling it out
Not sure how much of this is actually original anymore but sure looks wild
Wonder how fast these are...
I am guessing the original suspension has been tossed
The areo gives them a real wagon/panel van look
Off road!!

Other Citroens

After knocking around on some Citroen forums I came across these other Citroen’s which were are not 2cvs but still interesting.

Low Dyna
Slammed Dyane
Love the one air brushed panel on this one
Chillin with a 2CV
Low pair of Cits

V8

Some crazy person is even trying to put a v8 under the hood of a 2CV which I think is a whole lot wilder (and less sacraligious to Ferrari lovers) than the Ferrari 2cv.

Reminds me of Herbie the love bug

Oh man, this looks like a crazy amout of fun

Chicks dig em

Or at least get em stuck.

A little reward for those of you who made it all the way down here haha

Thanks to Ollie for a lot of these photos and snail.s4.bizhat.com

Get Buck

7

Anyone know where I can find more pictures of this VW?

Looks damn good from what I can see.

Edit: Thanks to @Tattoo24v (Mike) and blankets3 I was able to find more pics of this car which belongs to Andrew at Open Road Tuning.

BAM
Aired out
Diggin the dish
Looks like he got new set of Rotiform wheels
Nothing beats a clean shave

Event Coverage: Street Classics July 31st

8

After last weeks Theme Tuesday on muscle cars I was in the mood to check some out in person once again so I made my way out to the local Street Classics cruise in on Saturday Night.

Unfortunately soon after I arrived it started to rail lightly which put a quick end to things, but, I was able to fire off some shots and get something for WTF Friday.

I also meet a real down to earth s-10 owner in the process, good times.

Ford GT

Clarkson’s GT turned out to be lemon and he had to return it right? This one seems to be doing better.

Drew quite the crowd being fairly uncommon
Nice interior, more so for a Ford
I seem to recall this motor being from one of Fords trucks originally

Oddballs

Unique cars that caught my attention for one reason or another.

Jr. Draggster, anyone else with their parents got them into this?
Ollie this is for you buddy
To anyone who has driven one are they as fun as they look?
Corvair's are such odd little cars, being rear engine and American made but not all that fast
Sparse engine bay nothing unessecary except maybe the spare
Can't recall the last time I saw a Ventura at a show
This one was very, very clean

Lead Kings

No matter how dangerous and unhealthy it is working with lead is still and art form as much as these Lead Sleds are.

Wonder if there is a lead kings meet?
Matte colors always suit these cars so well
I'd love to drive this around low and slow all summer long
Beauty job on the interior
This Fairlane has seen some miles but still looks great
Shout out to all the people keeping pin striping alive

Muscle and Classics

Got to see what I set out to see.

I've got killer soft sport for all fox bodys, still
This truck had immaculate paint and airbrushing all over it
Shaved clean body
I like the use of green on these colors, makes the details pop
Caddy tails, side pipes, color accented rims
Thunder birds sure were unique
Clever plate!
Beautiful example of classic SS
Nice Bel Air Wag promoting Dukes appraisals
Hard to see in this picture but this Nova was packing serious drag radials
Clean 66 Nova
Two years in Lompoc. I'll die before I go back.
Beautiful Yenko Nova
If you still don't think classics have stance this picture should help...

Day & Nite

I’m ending today’s coverage with this s10. The owner, James, and myself talked for quite awhile in the light rain about trucks (remember I had an s10 Blazer), shows, clubs and just automobiles in general and it’s always nice to come across someone who just loves cars and shows as much as yourself and doesn’t hold any of the ego that is often associated with the various scenes.

James has put a lot of work in this truck, which is the first vehicle he ever owned, and talking with him I could tell that he did it for himself first, real enthusiasts second, and show recognition a distant third.

I look forward to seeing James and his truck at other events around the GTA.

A Canadian truck now made up of southern and clean oem panels
Jame's 2 link setup at full lift, the compressors were nicely hidden under the bed
Lots of work done under hood cleaning things up. Tons of custom bolts, pullies, and shaved pieces
Closer look at the air brushing under the hood
Air brushing continue onto the filler door
Close up of the custom engraved, polished, battery cover
Dark lit city scape in the sub box behind the seats, this blew me away never seen anything like it before

Hopefully I can make it out to one or two more of these before summers all said and done.

Infamous Auto Art

2

Bryan from Infamous Auto Art recently sent in some shots he took at Scrape By The Lake and Jitter bug 2010.  Bryan’s been out shooting local shows for the past year or so and I’ve posted up a few of his shots here previous.

It’s always a treat to another persons artistic take on an event you have gone to. Nothing beats clean cars, and local talent, I love our scene.

Clean GC under the night lights
Jitterbug looks like fun I should try and make it out next year
More of the Street Outlawz K swapped CRX from Scrape
Bryan's shot of that clean boosted Miata
Sam's 350 which is for sale now
The flush 905 rides g35
Great shot of this 64 hopping at Scrape

WTF Friday: Autograss

4

Take a small car (preferably)rear wheel drive car, strip out basically everything, add a roll cage and a fire extinguisher (do not add giant roof wing), and proceed to only turn one direction on a natural race track surface and what do you have?

Well, apparently, you have Britain’s most popular form of grass roots motor sport, Autograss.

I just found out about Autograss last week and with tons of classes for every level of racer (both financial level and skill wise) Autograss looks like a great way to have a lot of relativity cheap fun. I want in!

Sure, right now it’s done with cars we don’t generally have here in North America but I’m pretty sure a Chevrolet Chevette would do just fine  (provided it had not rusted completely out by the time it hit the track) and they go for $1000 or less these days.

Dear god this looks fun
It's all about the power to weight ratio.. and lack of traction
Hammer down!

If for whatever reason the above pictures didn’t peak your interest take a look at the video below and tell me this doesn’t look like a ton of fun.

Site Updates

So far survived my intense week long training at work and managed to get posts out every day regardless so things should be easy going in the  weeks to come. Thankfully this weekend is a long one so I will be able to get caught up with writing and shooting some features that should be really exciting.

In other news, recently Seche Media and Stretch and Poke sent me a bunch of stickers, and I have some coming from ‘It’s JDM Yo!‘ as well so once they all arrive I think I am going to put together a sticker pack and have some sort of contest to win a few of my surplus.

Stickers thanks to sechemedia.ca
Stickers thanks to Stretch and Poke

Flashback Friday

All the talk of Chevette’s above reminded me of this video, which reminded me of the Wheel Stand Fun WTF Friday I did last August.

Gotta go out to Grand Bend Drag Strip this year.

Geby is doin the damn thing

6

Just the other day @gebyz hit me up with this picture on twitter. After taking a look at it I quickly remembered that I had actually posted a picture of his car before, an RX-7 as sick as this is not easy to forget.

Geby, who hails from the same area of BC as the Drift Union guys, has done a great job putting together one serious looking and performing RX-7.

Upon first glance it’s easy to see that this car has got it’s stance on point.

The height of this RX-7 is care of Tien Type Flex coil overs (with EDFC) but it’s on rails, corner eating handling is a combination of the aforementioned pieces along with Racing Beat front and rear sway bars (with accompanying Re-Amemiya Sway Bar mounts), Re-Amemiya reinforcement bars and R1 Front strut bar.

If you can draw your eyes away from Geby's stance take a look at all the cf

The 25mm Shine Auto Feed Replica over fenders are filled to capacity with 18×9.5 (et +12 and +0) Rota Grids with 245/40’s up front and big ol 275/35’s out back.

The result is an aggressive looking ‘functional flush’ stance that allows the rest of Geby’s mods to be used to their full capacity, as every aspect of this car has been worked over in one way or another.

Love the amount of tire out back

Some of the easier to notice mods on this car include the genuine Fujita Engineering AFFLUX Front Bumper (Version 2 Type R) with attached Shine Auto Feed replica carbon fiber canards, canards which are just the beginning of his CF exterior parts which also include a Shine Auto Feed replica under tray, works replica rear carbon diffuser, and Re Amemiya CF Taillight covers.

Geby is not playing around

Some of the mods that can’t be spotted by viewing the exterior include the entirely rebuilt 13B-REW, and updated and modified interior.

Geby’s full mods list is below and I am going to let the pictures by Cole Chalmers do the rest of the talking.
