Event Coverage: Roadmates Corn Roast 2012

2

My friend Keith gave me the heads up on the Roadmates Corn Roast a few Saturdays back so I swung by in the loaner FR-S for about an hour on my way down town with the misses.

Similar turnout and atmosphere to last year, less about the cars and more about hanging out amongst cool cars.

The coverage is a little on the light side only because I had some issues working with the combination of bright sun and harsh shadows the trees provided, that and I spent more time shooting that shit than taking photos.

This Maverick was a trip, the roof chop really threw me off what it was

Hopefully I can get a chance to check out a few more classic/hot rod events before the season goes right down the drain.

Theme Tuesdays: Lettin’ The Sparks Fly: Part 2

11

Lately a number of people have been subtly (and not so subtly) suggesting that I should make the switch to air.

While I have yet to make up my mind one way or the other I will say that the idea of having the ability to lay sparks down whenever I feel like is pretty damn appealing.

Here’s another collection of people putting air ride (and other ground scraping measures) to good use use.

Nothing like a good road trip

Event Coverage: Option JDM 2012

1

This years Option JDM BBQ took place the same day as Berlin Klassik which put me in the tough position of having to choose between two events that I’ve never attended before.

Like most of life’s tough decsions I made this one with my gut and opted to head out to the one with free food which was Option’s shindig in Markham.

My stomach didn’t lead me astray as I wasn’t let down by the cars that arrived and the weather held out throughout the entire event which was also a definite plus.

Focal Point Concepts, I think I missed the vinyl switch on the Bug Eye, prefer the new hood over the previous one
RestyleIt looks to have made a killing this year
I think if I ever bought a wheel brand new it would be something from Enkei, good designs are reasonable prices, always liked this particular model

WTF Friday: Um……k?

1

A number of crazy creations have graced the  WTF Friday category over the last few years but this might be one of the most bizarre.

This car, which I can only assume used to be a Pontiac based on the wheels and tail lights, looks to be constructed almost completely out of body filler and expandable foam.

My best guess to it’s origin would be that the car was in some sort of significant accident and the owner decided this was the best way to resurrect it, or he is trying to do what the Lithuanians did a few years back.

While I have several questions about this vehicle that will probably never be answered the one bugging me most is whether or not this car has any windows, both the progress and ‘completed’ photos show the windows rolled down so I am willing to bet it doesn’t.

Parking it with the windows down isn’t really a security risk though as I can’t imagine many people would want to steal it.

Bondo… hell of a drug.

Site Updates

Catching up on some photo editing this weekend but I also just caught wind of an open house at Hitman Hot Rods in Cambridge.

I’d love to go but I will probably be at the  Nelson Park BMX jam, but the Doctor says I may have fractured my foot so we will see.

Flashback Friday

Alex asked if I had anymore information on the Sidekick I posted Tuesday and as of right now I don’t but that truck did remind me of this jiminy I posted back in 2010.

Actually it looks as though Alex may have commented on that post too…

So I had an FR-S For a week

8

Scion Canada was crazy  kind enough to give me an FR-S to test drive for a week and I figured I would be equally kind in giving it a ‘real world’ review.

By real world I mean from the perspective of someone who is not tainted by the luxury of having multiple press cars a month, or pockets lined with riches from foreign lands.

Initial Impression

When I approached the car for the first time my initial reaction was ‘damn this thing is orange‘  followed by ‘not quite sure about those tail lights’.

The first problem isn’t really a problem because if I were to purchase one I just wouldn’t get it in orange (probably blue or silver), and my issue with the tail lights kind of just went away the more I drove the car I suppose they just had to grow on me.

Moving on from those initial superficial impressions I was immediately pleased to see that this particular FR-S was manual. The one I drove at the first Stretch and Poke Meet (thanks again Scarborough Scion) was automatic and while it was a decent automatic it really doesn’t compare to the six speed version.

Once I got in, adjusted the seat and mirrors to my liking, and took off I was shocked at how easy the clutch pedal was to depress in comparison to my Mazda 3 and old e30. This made the absolutely terrible traffic I was stuck in 15 minutes after getting the car not so bad.

As my time with the car continued the transmission became one of my favorite parts of the vehicle because unlike some other vehicles I have driven the FR-S didn’t feel like moving a stir stick around in a pot of paint. It was rather comparable in throw to the TWM short shifter in my 3 just a little higher and a whole lot smoother.

Performance/Handling

While it would be cool to be like almost everyone else and claim that this car is underwhelming and under powered taking a stance like that while driving a Mazda 3 would be preposterous. Comparatively the FR-S felt plenty fast and it is probably the fastest car I have spent a prolonged period of time driving. It doesn’t smash you back into your seat or cause buxom passengers to squeal with glee but it’s a fun car to drive none the less.

Handling is where this car really excels and that becomes very apparent the first time to you a turn, and soon thereafter on ramps become a real treat. The basically neutral balance of the car combined with great throttle response and well sprung suspension really allows yo to push it in turns, the tires complain way before anything else begins to.

Once I got more comfortable with the car  I found myself driving it almost exclusively in the higher rpm range because that is where it felt the most responsive and with the driving aids off the car seemed to constantly be asking me how much of a scene I wanted to make and when I did it was right there with me instead of trying to talk me out of it.

Of course doing that constantly on public roads would have placed the car in the impound right quick ,so every now and again I would leave the driving aids on so I could be scolded by the flashing traction control light whenever I tried to get out of line.

I would have really loved to take this car out to the track or a closed course and see what it was really capable of but unfortunately the papers I signed in order to have this car for a week forbade it.

Interior

If there were any place I think the FR-S could be improved upon it would be the interior. It wasn’t bad, and I’ve surely experienced worse, but I thought some of the materials used were a little on the cheap side and some of the aesthetic choices a little odd.

For example the clock that sits beneath the touch screen pioneer deck –which I liked–  looked a little dated and reminded me of the 13 button OBC in my e30. Personally I feel integrating it into the two optional head units, or even gauge cluster, might have been a better choice.

The stereo is decent but lacked a little on the low end but that’s common of pretty well all factory stereos I have had exposure with.

The CF looking trim that went across the dash irked me, and the shift boot also felt a little ‘plasticy’, but the former could be fixed with black interior paint and the latter is such an incredibly easy thing to replace it is hardly worth mentioning.

One non aesthetic annoyance I did notice several times was that the seats didn’t lock when folded forward which complicates things a bit when you are trying to move a living thing (like a dog) in and out of the back seat by yourself. I’m not 100% sure if that is an issue with all of them or just this particular one as it’s been around the block a bit.

I’ve read a few other reviews online about road  and engine noise being a little loud but neither of those really registered to me as higher than usual and I don’t think the average enthusiast coming from a car with an intake or exhaust will be bothered.

On the positive side of things I really liked the seats and steering wheel which in my opinion is the perfect size. I’ve got a pretty narrow frame and the seats still kept me in place during all of my shenanigans and also didn’t hurt my back on longer drives.

Space wise the rear seats are kind of a joke but fold them down and you can fit a bmx (wheel removed) through the trunk which is honestly more important to me than accommodating rear passengers. I’m sure a moderate amount of adult things (like grocery) could fit back there as well for those who don’t ride kids bikes.

All of the controls were fairly intuitive (including the stereo) and I never had to crack open the glove box and find the manual to figure out how to use anything.

Appearance

As someone who isn’t a fan of most new cars the fact that this car doesn’t bother me aesthetically is quite a feat. Kudos to Scion for not slapping a big face on the front end of this car and creating something that actually doesn’t need too much after-market help.

Driving the car received a decent amount of head turns but at this point in the summer I feel most people are used to seeing them so it didn’t hold up or stop traffic.

My main sticking points with the car visually are the wheels which in my opinion they are far too busy and don’t compliment the exterior at all, and the ride height. The car has an obscene amount of wheel gap (even for a stock car) but that is probably just my bias showing based on the subject matter I normally post about.

In reality I could see a lot of people buying this car who can’t be bothered to slow down to avoid all of the bumps in the road I’m used to avoiding.

Final Thoughts

While the Scion had a few interior things I didn’t like at the end of the day, in a car like this, the interior –aside from the wheel, seat, pedals, and shift knob– doesn’t really matter. This isn’t a car you buy for it’s plush accommodation it’s a car you buy because you love driving and want to drive something that’s made to be driven.

Is it the FR-S perfect car for me now? No. Is it a car I wish I could own? Yes.

It’s a manageable car to drive from point A to Point B that could double as a track or drift car in a second. It’s also the perfect car to shake things up amongst manufacturers and remind them to build fun to drive, rear wheel drive, cars at a lower price point.

*Sorry there are not any detail oriented photos with this review, I somehow managed to erase all of them from my card prior to downloading them.
**Yes I did, no there isn’t video.

Guest Coverage: Drift West Round 3

5

Mike McConnell hit me up last weekend to let me know that he was in Penticton BC covering round 3 of the Drift West series.

It looks like the Drift scene out west is thriving and Mike is always great behind the lens so this is easily some of the best drift coverage to ever hit the site.

I’m going to forego the comments (for the most part) and let Mike’s pics do most of the talking.

Shout out to dude killin’ it in the Mustang, love it
What’s up to Serial Nine who’s been known to stop by here now and again
Safe to say the driver of this car keeps drifting fun
Not sure why but I really like this…
Based on pictures perhaps my favourite car all around from the event

Love the graphics though the Pac Man noise is now stuck in my head

Mike is also working on a little video of the event….SIE premier?

More can be found on his flickr.

Thanks again Mike!

Theme Tuesdays: Uncommon Stance

17

Rolling with the tone set by Erik’s feature today I am going to post a selection of platforms not commonly seen within the stance community.

I did something similar before called ‘Untraditional Low‘ but I prefer’ uncommon’ better (there is of course no telling how I will feel about calling it that in two years time).

To be clear I am not saying that everyone should go out and make these platforms common but don’t be against trying something different.

Start things off the the Cousin to the Ford Probe
and a second for good measure
The second Vera I’ve posted here… well third if you include the one with eyelashes
Daihatusu
I like this Range a whole lot
Kia on Wald Duchatelets
I guess sidekicks/trackers/SunnRunner lowered are not that uncommon but one on banded steels sort of is
Stacey Dash
Suzuki Forenza which is apparently an Chevrolet Optra here
Can you roll a plastic fender?
Altima Coupe?
Altima Sedan
Probably the only Daweoo Lanos I will ever post
Saab Aero 900
Jeff was about to toss this car in a river but now he is going to finish it
Any excuse to post Mr. King’s truck is a good one
Not bad actually
Super dope Lincoln MKS
Lotus Espirt bagged build is here
The only Alfa you will see setup like this… if you ever see it.
This Micra is crazy and weird, read about it here

and for no reason at all a Boso Saturn

Weird.

Featured Ride: Erik’s 1994 Probe GT

15

Stance focused sites –this one included– often feature many of the same vehicles;  a clean Civic, a couple bagged Volkswagens, a few 350zs,  a vintage truck, and finally plethora of s2000s.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with builds on more traditional or accepted platforms the audience of stance focused websites –you included– often ask, or in some cases demand, something different and today’s featured ride is exactly that.

Something different.

These days Probe’s are seldom seen on the road and most that are are either completely stock or desperately holding onto styling cues of yesteryear.

Erik’s ’94 however is one of very few exceptions: It’s low, it’s quick, and most importantly it’s clean.

The first time I saw this car was in 2010 and –Stance Is Everything sticker on the lip aside– the car stood out to me because I honestly couldn’t readily recall the last time I had seen a Probe at a show.

After taking in the build for a few moments I introduced myself to then stranger Erik and now almost three years later I am incredibly glad I did.

Erik is easily one of the nicest enthusiasts I’ve met and is the type of person always willing to help someone out if he is in a position to do so.

It’s through him I met contributing photographer Mike McConnell along with most of the guys in Nine-O-Five Rides, and because of him I got the opportunity to spend an evening with the PFAFF tuning 964.

Simply put Erik is a great guy who loves cars, and that passion for cars has been driving force behind this build.

Erik has had this Probe for nine years and during that time it’s gone through numerous exterior, interior, and power train revisions.

Currently the car is sporting a low mileage KL-DE motor with a custom turbo set-up built around a Turbonetics t3/t4 unit.

Running at 7psi with a mild tune this car puts down roughly 265 to the wheels which is a considerable step up from the 164hp these cars were rated at from the factory.

After making such a considerable change under hood Erik figured he would do an equally significant change to the exterior and said farewell to a kit that had been on his car for several years. Opting to bring back the factory bumpers and side skirts.

Once he acquired OEM replacements he had the car resprayed 2012 Ford Sterling Grey Metallic and installed a Mustang Mach 1 front lip.

The aggressive stance (something that is almost virtually non existent among the Probe community) is the end result of  several years worth of trial and error.

The wheels are a square 18×9.5 all around with an offset of +35 up front and +15 in the rear and the low is supplied by K Sport Coils. Helping dial everything in are K Sport Ford Focus Camber plates, King6 adjustable rear lateral arms, and camber bolts.

This combination of parts allows the car to sit considerably lower than stock and position the wheels within the fenders via -1.5 degrees of camber up front and 4.5 degrees out back.

Interior wise Erik has changed everything (including the dash) over to black and added black leather Cobra buckets. Finally A stereo setup comprised of Clarion and Alpine components keeps things lively on long drives and for some personal flare he sticker bombed the center console.

Taking an underdog chassis and running with it while putting up with comments like “It’s still a…. Why Don’t you…. Have you heard this Probe Joke….” isn’t the easiest thing to do but Erik has proven himself more than up to the task.

After every winter I look forward to hearing what Erik has done to his car and look forward to continuing to document it’s progress here on Stance Is Everything.

WTF Friday: Deciptikarr

0

Last Saturday I swung by the Roadmates Corn Roast for a little bit and amongst the classics and traditional rods I spotted this version of K.I.T.T. rival K.A.R.R.

Having never really seen a modified screen replica before I did a little bit of investigation on-line later for more info on this build.

Not much was written but a few videos revealed that up until two years ago this Trans Am looked like every other K.I.T.T./K.A.R.R. replica in existence. However after seeing K.I.T.T.’s  ‘Attack Mode‘ from the most recent (and terrible) series the owner decided to go a whole lot more aggressive.

The Deciptikarr in all it’s glory
Sorry for the Instagram-esque picture of the rear.  By the way I have instagram now @stanceiseverythingcom
A whole lot of tire under this car
Not sure I remember this feature from the original series

The widebody is all  fibreglass and bondo and in addition to the sub above there is a huge screen in the trunk.

The wheels (which intrigued me the most) are actually not widened turbo fins with ‘bowling ball’ hubcaps but Cragar Soft 8’s with fiberglass hub caps over top to give them an appearance similar to the ones on the original car.

Finally the dash has also been signed by a the Hoff himself along with a few other actors of the Era (Bo Duke).

I don’t know how people actually drive with this wheel

There was a time I was really into ‘star cars’ so that part of me still find this pretty interesting.

I would love to see someone do up a slammed Ecto-1 but no one seems really interested in doing that….yet.

A video interview with the owner can be found here.

Site Updates

I’ve got a serious backlog of content I am still getting through and I’ve also been dealing with some performance issues on the site lately (load times) so I will probably be doing a mix of catch up and tweaks over the weekend.

Event wise I will be at one of these two events on Sunday not sure which yet…

…one does have free food.

Flashback Friday

Here’s a look back at last years Corn Roast Coverage while I work on this years.

2011 Roadmates Corn Roast coverage here

Event Coverage: Toronto Subaru Club Hypermeeting 2012

2

When I heard the 2012 Toronto Subaru Club was hosting their annual HyperMeeting the day after Importfest I wasn’t entirely sure I would end up to attending because historically in addition to not having much of a voice, and full capture cards I’ve generally been exhausted the day after IF.

However the last Hypermeeting I had been to was in 2009 and this year my friend and previous featured ride owner Tim Neil let me know he was bringing out his Bat-Berry project so I sucked it up and headed down to Subaru Canada Headquarters.

Hit and run was the original plan but that went out the window as soon as I rounded the corner and saw the turnout. From what I’ve read online the turnout was at least 400 cars and the TSC ended up raising about $8000 for Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House which was matched by Subaru Canada.

Plus there was a BBQ, all those things amount to a pretty damn good day close to home.

I’ve seen this car around Mississauga a couple times, it’s awesome
Gill scraping his was along
I’ve always really liked these Forresters
Ty’s newest daily, you might remember his White STI which he sold
The owner of this car used to own Ty’s car and they are modified nearly identical
I didn’t get an exterior shot of this one….
One of several cars on XXRs which have really exploded this year
Dat RS
Last saw this car from Innovative trying to set a record in Grand Bend
No word of a lie I am pretty sure my first bike was exactly like that
This car ended up winning best wheels, Zaubers that were powdercoated by JP at Stripping Technologies
Not a common colour that’s for sure
When John took a picture of this at CSCS I had no idea the colour continued under the hood
Blindingly bright (and hard to expose)
Speaking of bright… here’s John Wakely’s WRX
Another bright addition promoting the Autofest Car show
Focal Point Concepts in the area
Olive drab, not a bad look
I’ll take the one on the right
The owner of this car obviously has a bit of a CF fetish
First set of local checker wheels i have seen since the ChopShop ones from a few years ago
Scared of Heights Support Group
Draggin flap on Rotiform NUE’s
This car looks incredibly angry
Really regret not taking a closer look at this Hawk Eye from Can Jam Motorsports
Kevin’s Varis Widebody
I wonder if there is a (rich) person out there who owns all the TE variants…
Love this car front to back
Level one
The first debuting of the Bat Berry and somehow I only took two pictures of it
Still a lot of work left but he admits to being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel
JDM clipped tegg
I completely missed this FR-S at Importfest…
Exhaust tips are a little big but I like the car overall
Soon after this shot they took off to do their own photo shoot
After some investigation these wheels are infact not Mina’s
Driven S2000
Ryan’s car fresh off the Importfest floor
The same of which could be said for my own car
Chris builds clean cars and clearly still loves Subarus
I am honestly unsure whether or not I had seen a GT4 in person prior to HyperMeeting
I certainly have never seen two in one place before
I guess they would have these would have been direct competitors with Subaru?
Would have loved to peak under the hood of either of these

I’ve got a couple more photos to edit that might make their way to the fanpage or instagram over the next few weeks.
